Wit convinced me to let him drive the Jeep home, and he faithfully followed the speed limitโฆuntil we hit The Farm road. Then he pressed down on the clutch to shift into a higher gear before letting out an excited whoop. I laughed at first, but the faster we flew, the harder my heart hammered. โCan you slow down?โ I asked. โWitโฆโ
He couldnโt hear me, and thick clouds of dust kicked up in our wake. I clenched my teeth, worried Winkโs old car might topple. It had happened before, back when my dad and Uncle Brad were in college. Theyโd been messing around in one of the fields and accidentally rolled it. No one had been hurt, but still, the car had ended up on its side. My grandfather had been livid.
And ClaireโI mostly was thinking about Claire and how fast that SUV had been going when it smashed into Sarahโs car. Even though the lane was barely wide enough, Paquaโs driveway was technically a two-way street. What would happen if we had to swerve around another car?
โWit,โ I tried again, and this time, I put my hand on his knee and squeezed it. โWit!โ
Something flashed in his eyes when he turned and saw the terror on my face, and before I could count to ten, heโd eased on the brakes, pulled onto the side of the road, and put the Jeep in park. โShit, shit, shit,โ I heard him mutter as he hopped out of the car and came around to my side to pop open
my door. โIโm sorry.โ He looked up at me, high off the ground in the passenger seat. โIโm an asshole. Iโm sorry.โ
Donโt cry, I told myself.ย Donโt cry.
But it had taken him less than ten seconds. It had taken himย less than ten secondsย to connect the dots, while Ben hadย neverย connected them. โNo, Iโm sorry,โ I managed to say. โI justโฆโ I glanced away, unable to look at him. โI like to be in control. Ever sinceโฆโ A tear escaped, and my cheeks burned. โI feel like I need to be in control.โ
Wit gestured to the driverโs side. โAbsolutely,โ he said. โPlease, take over.โ
โNo,โ I told him. โYou wanted to drive.โ I took a deep breath and settled back into my seat. โI have to get over this.โ
Because I didโI couldnโt continue living in fear whenever I wasnโt the one behind the wheel. I needed to trust other drivers again.
โIt doesnโt have to be today, though,โ Wit said. โItโs okay.โ I kept my seat belt buckled.
He nodded, then walked back around the front of the Jeep and climbed up into the driverโs seat. He turned over the ignition, put the car in first gear, then pulled onto the road after Aunt Christineโs Range Rover drove by us.
The speedometerโs needle didnโt go above twenty-five the rest of the way back, and we parked the Jeep outside the tractor barn. Wit walked me back to the Annex, his arm curved around my waist and carrying my Edgartown treasure trove (books, candy, and a new Black Dog T-shirt) like a gentleman. โAnything?โ he asked as I checked the mailbox for my new target. When Viv had come up empty-handed last night, Iโd texted Commissioner Wink.ย What a load of horseshit, heโd replied.ย If you donโt have it by
tomorrow, let me know, and Iโll take care of it.
โNothing,โ I said with a sigh. โNada.โ โSeriously? Thatโs ridiculous.โ
โWhatโs ridiculous?โ someone asked, and we turned to see Luli rounding the cottage.
Wit gave the top of my head a sweet kiss. โSee you soon,โ he whispered before saying Michael needed him for something.
I thought he was a little afraid of Luli, so I giggled once she and I were aloneโฆbut my friend didnโt laugh with me. Instead, she watched Wit retreat to the Cabin. โBye-bye,โ she said, her voice almost wistful. โBye-bye, Benny Boy.โ
My stomach stirred. Again, Luli was bringing up Ben. Why? I picked up my shopping bags and shot her a look. โCould you call him by his actual name, please?โ I asked.
Luli laughed. โMeredith, what happened to โIโm here to celebrate Sarah and Michael and spend time with my friends and familyโ?โ
โNothing,โ I told her. โThatโs exactly what Iโm doing.โ I nudged open the Annexโs door, and Luli followed me inside. My parents were gone, probably at the beach. It wasย h-o-tย hot today, at least ninety.
โYes,โ Luli said, โbut how about your no hookups thing? You told usโโ โRelax,โ I cut in, feeling this needling on my neck. โWit isnโt a hookup.โ
Luli raised her eyebrow. โIsnโt he? You guys were the talk of The Farm this morning. Everyone saw you leave the Varsity Room together.โ
I fumbled for a good response, because I wasnโt sure what Wit and I were yet.
Then I remembered what my dad had said earlier when I mentioned Wit and I were going to Dock Street.ย Thatโs a good move, Mer. Get him off The Farm, make him feel comfortable, get him to open up.
โRelax,โ I said again. โYeah, weโre having some fun, but Iโm also pumping him for information.โ I straightened my shoulders. โAssassin information, to help our alliance.โ
It felt so wrong to say, but when Luliโs lips curled into a scheming smile, I knew it was theย rightย thing to say. At least for now. โOoh, thatโs so evil.
Getting personal with the enemy. I love it.โ She flopped onto the sitting roomโs couch. โSpeaking of which, I need your help this afternoon. Obviously, I still have Margaret, but Iโm thinking I can get herโโ
โIโm sorry,โ I said, stomach twisting. โWit and I have plans laterโฆso, um, can Pravika or Jake sub in for me?โ
โTheyโre both at work,โ Luli said flatly. โEli?โ I suggested.
โSure, I guess so,โ she said after a beat and then, โDo you know Witโs target?โ
โThatโs my goal for today,โ I lied. She smirked. โGood.โ
I winced.
โText us when you find out?โ
โYes.โ I nodded quickly, trying to muster up enthusiasm. โOf course.โ

Instead of joining everyone on the main stretch of beach, Wit and I headed for Paqua Pond. โYouโll like it,โ I said when he met me back at the Annex. โHardly anyone goes there. Claire and I call it Secret Beach.โ
โSounds awesome,โ he said and slung my canvas tote over his shoulder. It was packed with all the beach essentials: towels, sunscreen, books, ice-cold waters, sandwiches, and other snacks. Wit winked. โYou had me atย secret.โ
We walked across the fields but veered onto the wooded pathway in the opposite direction from the ocean and the Oyster Pond. Both of us had our water guns, just in case. I listened as Wit relayed the new intel heโd collected from the other groomsmen. โThe bridesmaids are dropping like flies,โ he said. โUncle Brad bombarded their breakfast and took out Danielle.โ
โOuch, really?โ I said. Birds were chirping, and sweat was already dripping down my back. โThe maid of honor?โ
โUh-huh. She tried to argue that it was an official wedding event, since they were all there, but Wink rejected that in about three seconds.โ
I laughed.
โIan is still in, so we gotta watch out for him, and I think you should text Sarah to get that nightmareโs number.โ
โCalm down,โ I said and pretend-punched him in the arm. It was slick with sweat, too. โViv isnโt a nightmare. Sheโs justโโ
โโthe worst,โ Wit finished. โSarah and Michael have dragged me to dinner with her before in New Orleans. Trust me, sheโs the worst.โ He shook his head. โOf course she hasnโt delivered her target.โ
โMmm,โ I mumbled, not exactly eager to reach out to Sarah. โWink said he would take care of it.โ
Wit nodded, then slipped into silence with a pensive expression on his face. โWho do you think has me?โ he asked, sounding unnerved. โIโm starting to freak out a little.โ
โI donโt know,โ I answered. โMy dad is picking off cousins, my mom has Nicole, Jakeโs new target is a groomsman, Uncle Brad now has whoever Danielle had, and Luliโฆโ I bit my lip. โYour name hasnโt come up at all.โ
โSorry about Luli, by the way,โ Wit said. โI totally abandoned you back there.โ He chuckled. โPart of me suspectedย sheย had me, and the other part is scared of her.โ
โShe does not have you,โ I assured him.
Although Iโm supposed to tell her whoย youย haveโฆ
Wit and I had agreed to neither confirm nor deny any alleged Assassin allegiance, but where did that promise to Luli fall? I already knew who Witโs next mark was, so I technically couldโve told her right then and there. Ugh. I wasnโt actually going to break Witโs confidence, was I?
Either way, I couldnโt tell him.
โHey, this is a cool tree,โ he said, snapping me out of my thoughts. Heโd stopped in front of a tree with thick branches and outlandish vines twisted
around its trunk. My heart flipped. Dad had taken Claire and me on so many walks when we were little and always pointed out the โjungle tree.โ
โWatch this!โ I broke into a grin and sprinted past Wit to scramble up the tree in record time. Using one branch as a balance beam, I pushed through a patch of leaves to see him staring up at me. โWhat?โ I asked.
He smiled. โNothing.โ
I laughed. โI love climbing trees.โ
โYes,โ he said, the corners of his mouth curling. โJust like you love climbingย me.โ
My breath caught.
Just like you love climbing me.
โYouโre wicked,โ I said.
โAnd you go wild for it,โ he said back as I jumped to the ground.

Secret Beach was beautifully deserted. Paqua Pond shimmered in the sunlight, with its wooden float just waiting for Wit and me to wade into the water and swim out to it. โWe need to let the sunscreen soak in first, though,โ he said and sighed when I gave him a look. โListen, I canโt get burned.โ He pointed to his bruise. โMichael told me that Aunt Christine is still debating cutting me from the wedding photos. If Iโm both maimedย andย fried, Iโd say the odds wonโt be in my favor.โ
I grumbled. โFine.โ
So we spread out our beach towels, ate our roast beef sandwiches, and read our books for a while. Iโd bought the final installment in Claireโs favorite fantasy series, but I kept peeking at Wit, shirtless and all stretched out with his New Zealand and Australia books.
โOkay,โ I said eventually, โwhen do you leave?โ He glanced over at me. โOh, Michael told you?โ
I shook my head. โNo, but youโre obsessedโI mean, you gotย anotherย one today.โ I laughed. โWhen do you go Down Under?โ
โThe end of the summer.โ
โAnd when do you return?โ
Wit hesitated, slowly closing his book. โNext May.โ โWait,โ I said, sitting up on my towel. โWhat?โ
Wit sat up, too. โMy adventure,โ he said. โRemember? The one I want to go on?โ
I nodded silently.
โWell, this is it,โ he explained, holding up his guidebook. โIโm taking a year off school and going to New Zealand. My parents and I agreed that itโs the best thing for me right now.โ He paused. โBecause Tulaneโฆโ He shrugged. โI donโt knowโฆmaybe Iโll go back there, maybe Iโll transfer. I need to think.โ
Again, I just nodded.
Wit looked at me. โMeredith?โ โA whole year?โ I blurted.
โNo, not aย wholeย year,โ he said. โJust late August to late May. A school year.โ
For some reason, my head was spinning. Perhaps it was the extreme heat. โWhat are you going to do there?โ I asked.
โEverything,โ he answered. โTravel, of course, but first Iโm going to work as a tour guide at a national park. One of Michaelโs friends did that in college and helped me set it up. Iโm going to Australia, too.โ He smiled. โIt might sound ridiculous, but I want to work on a farm for a bit. Itโs on my bucket list.โ His lips quirked. โDonโt laugh.โ
I didnโt laugh. Because it was hitting me now,ย reallyย hitting me. โWit isnโt a hookup,โ Iโd told Luli, but yes, that wasย exactlyย what he wasโexactly what we were to each other. After Sarah and Michael said โI doโ on Saturday and drove off into the sunset, Wit and I would go our separate
ways, him halfway around the world and me to Hamilton. Suddenly, I felt like I was treading in unfamiliar waters, and I didnโt like it. Ben and I had dated forย four yearsโI had no true understanding of or experience with casually hooking up.
โHey,โ Wit said now. โSunscreen be damned. Letโs take a dunk.โ
โYes, finally.โ I jumped up from my sweat-soaked towel, sighing contentedly when the cool water hit my skin. Wit immediately submerged himself in the shallows and did a goofy handstand before taking off for the pondโs float. I flipped onto my back and did my best backstroke to follow him.
He pulled himself up onto the float first, and once on the edge, he stretched out a hand to help me before we swiftly fell back against the worn wood planks and kissed. The float was warm from the sun, but I shivered a little. Witโs slick skin felt soย goodย against mine. His fingertips danced up along my waist as I tangled my hands in his wet hair, and our kisses sent slow spirals through me before I had to break away for air. โHoly fuck,โ I breathed.
โPayback for this morning,โ he said.
I laughed when he fiddled with my bikini strings. โYou are soย notย subtle.โ He shrugged. โOnly if youโre comfortable.โ
โYes, of course.โ I ran my hands over his shoulders, down his wiry arms. Because yes, with him, I was comfortable, and if we only had a few more days together, I did want this. โJust not here,โ I said and kissed his collarbone. We mightโve been the only ones at Secret Beach, but it wasnโt like we wereย reallyย in private. โLater?โ
โMmm, yeah,โ Wit murmured. โLater. Right, all right.โ He sounded like he wasnโt thinking straight. โGood, all good.โ
And then he just stiffly rolled off the float, flopping into the pond. A type of cold shower, I supposed. It was hilarious.
โYou are wicked,โ he said when he broke the surface.
โAnd you go wild for it,โ I said back, moving to dangle my legs off the float.
Wit splashed water at me. I kicked water at him.
How did we only have four days left?
