Chapter no 12

The Summer of Broken Rules

Wit convinced me to let him drive the Jeep home, and he faithfully followed the speed limitโ€ฆuntil we hit The Farm road. Then he pressed down on the clutch to shift into a higher gear before letting out an excited whoop. I laughed at first, but the faster we flew, the harder my heart hammered. โ€œCan you slow down?โ€ I asked. โ€œWitโ€ฆโ€

He couldnโ€™t hear me, and thick clouds of dust kicked up in our wake. I clenched my teeth, worried Winkโ€™s old car might topple. It had happened before, back when my dad and Uncle Brad were in college. Theyโ€™d been messing around in one of the fields and accidentally rolled it. No one had been hurt, but still, the car had ended up on its side. My grandfather had been livid.

And Claireโ€”I mostly was thinking about Claire and how fast that SUV had been going when it smashed into Sarahโ€™s car. Even though the lane was barely wide enough, Paquaโ€™s driveway was technically a two-way street. What would happen if we had to swerve around another car?

โ€œWit,โ€ I tried again, and this time, I put my hand on his knee and squeezed it. โ€œWit!โ€

Something flashed in his eyes when he turned and saw the terror on my face, and before I could count to ten, heโ€™d eased on the brakes, pulled onto the side of the road, and put the Jeep in park. โ€œShit, shit, shit,โ€ I heard him mutter as he hopped out of the car and came around to my side to pop open

my door. โ€œIโ€™m sorry.โ€ He looked up at me, high off the ground in the passenger seat. โ€œIโ€™m an asshole. Iโ€™m sorry.โ€

Donโ€™t cry, I told myself.ย Donโ€™t cry.

But it had taken him less than ten seconds. It had taken himย less than ten secondsย to connect the dots, while Ben hadย neverย connected them. โ€œNo, Iโ€™m sorry,โ€ I managed to say. โ€œI justโ€ฆโ€ I glanced away, unable to look at him. โ€œI like to be in control. Ever sinceโ€ฆโ€ A tear escaped, and my cheeks burned. โ€œI feel like I need to be in control.โ€

Wit gestured to the driverโ€™s side. โ€œAbsolutely,โ€ he said. โ€œPlease, take over.โ€

โ€œNo,โ€ I told him. โ€œYou wanted to drive.โ€ I took a deep breath and settled back into my seat. โ€œI have to get over this.โ€

Because I didโ€”I couldnโ€™t continue living in fear whenever I wasnโ€™t the one behind the wheel. I needed to trust other drivers again.

โ€œIt doesnโ€™t have to be today, though,โ€ Wit said. โ€œItโ€™s okay.โ€ I kept my seat belt buckled.

He nodded, then walked back around the front of the Jeep and climbed up into the driverโ€™s seat. He turned over the ignition, put the car in first gear, then pulled onto the road after Aunt Christineโ€™s Range Rover drove by us.

The speedometerโ€™s needle didnโ€™t go above twenty-five the rest of the way back, and we parked the Jeep outside the tractor barn. Wit walked me back to the Annex, his arm curved around my waist and carrying my Edgartown treasure trove (books, candy, and a new Black Dog T-shirt) like a gentleman. โ€œAnything?โ€ he asked as I checked the mailbox for my new target. When Viv had come up empty-handed last night, Iโ€™d texted Commissioner Wink.ย What a load of horseshit, heโ€™d replied.ย If you donโ€™t have it by

tomorrow, let me know, and Iโ€™ll take care of it.

โ€œNothing,โ€ I said with a sigh. โ€œNada.โ€ โ€œSeriously? Thatโ€™s ridiculous.โ€

โ€œWhatโ€™s ridiculous?โ€ someone asked, and we turned to see Luli rounding the cottage.

Wit gave the top of my head a sweet kiss. โ€œSee you soon,โ€ he whispered before saying Michael needed him for something.

I thought he was a little afraid of Luli, so I giggled once she and I were aloneโ€ฆbut my friend didnโ€™t laugh with me. Instead, she watched Wit retreat to the Cabin. โ€œBye-bye,โ€ she said, her voice almost wistful. โ€œBye-bye, Benny Boy.โ€

My stomach stirred. Again, Luli was bringing up Ben. Why? I picked up my shopping bags and shot her a look. โ€œCould you call him by his actual name, please?โ€ I asked.

Luli laughed. โ€œMeredith, what happened to โ€˜Iโ€™m here to celebrate Sarah and Michael and spend time with my friends and familyโ€˜?โ€

โ€œNothing,โ€ I told her. โ€œThatโ€™s exactly what Iโ€™m doing.โ€ I nudged open the Annexโ€™s door, and Luli followed me inside. My parents were gone, probably at the beach. It wasย h-o-tย hot today, at least ninety.

โ€œYes,โ€ Luli said, โ€œbut how about your no hookups thing? You told usโ€”โ€ โ€œRelax,โ€ I cut in, feeling this needling on my neck. โ€œWit isnโ€™t a hookup.โ€

Luli raised her eyebrow. โ€œIsnโ€™t he? You guys were the talk of The Farm this morning. Everyone saw you leave the Varsity Room together.โ€

I fumbled for a good response, because I wasnโ€™t sure what Wit and I were yet.

Then I remembered what my dad had said earlier when I mentioned Wit and I were going to Dock Street.ย Thatโ€™s a good move, Mer. Get him off The Farm, make him feel comfortable, get him to open up.

โ€œRelax,โ€ I said again. โ€œYeah, weโ€™re having some fun, but Iโ€™m also pumping him for information.โ€ I straightened my shoulders. โ€œAssassin information, to help our alliance.โ€

It felt so wrong to say, but when Luliโ€™s lips curled into a scheming smile, I knew it was theย rightย thing to say. At least for now. โ€œOoh, thatโ€™s so evil.

Getting personal with the enemy. I love it.โ€ She flopped onto the sitting roomโ€™s couch. โ€œSpeaking of which, I need your help this afternoon. Obviously, I still have Margaret, but Iโ€™m thinking I can get herโ€”โ€

โ€œIโ€™m sorry,โ€ I said, stomach twisting. โ€œWit and I have plans laterโ€ฆso, um, can Pravika or Jake sub in for me?โ€

โ€œTheyโ€™re both at work,โ€ Luli said flatly. โ€œEli?โ€ I suggested.

โ€œSure, I guess so,โ€ she said after a beat and then, โ€œDo you know Witโ€™s target?โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s my goal for today,โ€ I lied. She smirked. โ€œGood.โ€

I winced.

โ€œText us when you find out?โ€

โ€œYes.โ€ I nodded quickly, trying to muster up enthusiasm. โ€œOf course.โ€

* * *

Instead of joining everyone on the main stretch of beach, Wit and I headed for Paqua Pond. โ€œYouโ€™ll like it,โ€ I said when he met me back at the Annex. โ€œHardly anyone goes there. Claire and I call it Secret Beach.โ€

โ€œSounds awesome,โ€ he said and slung my canvas tote over his shoulder. It was packed with all the beach essentials: towels, sunscreen, books, ice-cold waters, sandwiches, and other snacks. Wit winked. โ€œYou had me atย secret.โ€

We walked across the fields but veered onto the wooded pathway in the opposite direction from the ocean and the Oyster Pond. Both of us had our water guns, just in case. I listened as Wit relayed the new intel heโ€™d collected from the other groomsmen. โ€œThe bridesmaids are dropping like flies,โ€ he said. โ€œUncle Brad bombarded their breakfast and took out Danielle.โ€

โ€œOuch, really?โ€ I said. Birds were chirping, and sweat was already dripping down my back. โ€œThe maid of honor?โ€

โ€œUh-huh. She tried to argue that it was an official wedding event, since they were all there, but Wink rejected that in about three seconds.โ€

I laughed.

โ€œIan is still in, so we gotta watch out for him, and I think you should text Sarah to get that nightmareโ€™s number.โ€

โ€œCalm down,โ€ I said and pretend-punched him in the arm. It was slick with sweat, too. โ€œViv isnโ€™t a nightmare. Sheโ€™s justโ€”โ€

โ€œโ€”the worst,โ€ Wit finished. โ€œSarah and Michael have dragged me to dinner with her before in New Orleans. Trust me, sheโ€™s the worst.โ€ He shook his head. โ€œOf course she hasnโ€™t delivered her target.โ€

โ€œMmm,โ€ I mumbled, not exactly eager to reach out to Sarah. โ€œWink said he would take care of it.โ€

Wit nodded, then slipped into silence with a pensive expression on his face. โ€œWho do you think has me?โ€ he asked, sounding unnerved. โ€œIโ€™m starting to freak out a little.โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t know,โ€ I answered. โ€œMy dad is picking off cousins, my mom has Nicole, Jakeโ€™s new target is a groomsman, Uncle Brad now has whoever Danielle had, and Luliโ€ฆโ€ I bit my lip. โ€œYour name hasnโ€™t come up at all.โ€

โ€œSorry about Luli, by the way,โ€ Wit said. โ€œI totally abandoned you back there.โ€ He chuckled. โ€œPart of me suspectedย sheย had me, and the other part is scared of her.โ€

โ€œShe does not have you,โ€ I assured him.

Although Iโ€™m supposed to tell her whoย youย haveโ€ฆ

Wit and I had agreed to neither confirm nor deny any alleged Assassin allegiance, but where did that promise to Luli fall? I already knew who Witโ€™s next mark was, so I technically couldโ€™ve told her right then and there. Ugh. I wasnโ€™t actually going to break Witโ€™s confidence, was I?

Either way, I couldnโ€™t tell him.

โ€œHey, this is a cool tree,โ€ he said, snapping me out of my thoughts. Heโ€™d stopped in front of a tree with thick branches and outlandish vines twisted

around its trunk. My heart flipped. Dad had taken Claire and me on so many walks when we were little and always pointed out the โ€œjungle tree.โ€

โ€œWatch this!โ€ I broke into a grin and sprinted past Wit to scramble up the tree in record time. Using one branch as a balance beam, I pushed through a patch of leaves to see him staring up at me. โ€œWhat?โ€ I asked.

He smiled. โ€œNothing.โ€

I laughed. โ€œI love climbing trees.โ€

โ€œYes,โ€ he said, the corners of his mouth curling. โ€œJust like you love climbingย me.โ€

My breath caught.

Just like you love climbing me.

โ€œYouโ€™re wicked,โ€ I said.

โ€œAnd you go wild for it,โ€ he said back as I jumped to the ground.

Secret Beach was beautifully deserted. Paqua Pond shimmered in the sunlight, with its wooden float just waiting for Wit and me to wade into the water and swim out to it. โ€œWe need to let the sunscreen soak in first, though,โ€ he said and sighed when I gave him a look. โ€œListen, I canโ€™t get burned.โ€ He pointed to his bruise. โ€œMichael told me that Aunt Christine is still debating cutting me from the wedding photos. If Iโ€™m both maimedย andย fried, Iโ€™d say the odds wonโ€™t be in my favor.โ€

I grumbled. โ€œFine.โ€

So we spread out our beach towels, ate our roast beef sandwiches, and read our books for a while. Iโ€™d bought the final installment in Claireโ€™s favorite fantasy series, but I kept peeking at Wit, shirtless and all stretched out with his New Zealand and Australia books.

โ€œOkay,โ€ I said eventually, โ€œwhen do you leave?โ€ He glanced over at me. โ€œOh, Michael told you?โ€

I shook my head. โ€œNo, but youโ€™re obsessedโ€”I mean, you gotย anotherย one today.โ€ I laughed. โ€œWhen do you go Down Under?โ€

โ€œThe end of the summer.โ€

โ€œAnd when do you return?โ€

Wit hesitated, slowly closing his book. โ€œNext May.โ€ โ€œWait,โ€ I said, sitting up on my towel. โ€œWhat?โ€

Wit sat up, too. โ€œMy adventure,โ€ he said. โ€œRemember? The one I want to go on?โ€

I nodded silently.

โ€œWell, this is it,โ€ he explained, holding up his guidebook. โ€œIโ€™m taking a year off school and going to New Zealand. My parents and I agreed that itโ€™s the best thing for me right now.โ€ He paused. โ€œBecause Tulaneโ€ฆโ€ He shrugged. โ€œI donโ€™t knowโ€ฆmaybe Iโ€™ll go back there, maybe Iโ€™ll transfer. I need to think.โ€

Again, I just nodded.

Wit looked at me. โ€œMeredith?โ€ โ€œA whole year?โ€ I blurted.

โ€œNo, not aย wholeย year,โ€ he said. โ€œJust late August to late May. A school year.โ€

For some reason, my head was spinning. Perhaps it was the extreme heat. โ€œWhat are you going to do there?โ€ I asked.

โ€œEverything,โ€ he answered. โ€œTravel, of course, but first Iโ€™m going to work as a tour guide at a national park. One of Michaelโ€™s friends did that in college and helped me set it up. Iโ€™m going to Australia, too.โ€ He smiled. โ€œIt might sound ridiculous, but I want to work on a farm for a bit. Itโ€™s on my bucket list.โ€ His lips quirked. โ€œDonโ€™t laugh.โ€

I didnโ€™t laugh. Because it was hitting me now,ย reallyย hitting me. โ€œWit isnโ€™t a hookup,โ€ Iโ€™d told Luli, but yes, that wasย exactlyย what he wasโ€”exactly what we were to each other. After Sarah and Michael said โ€œI doโ€ on Saturday and drove off into the sunset, Wit and I would go our separate

ways, him halfway around the world and me to Hamilton. Suddenly, I felt like I was treading in unfamiliar waters, and I didnโ€™t like it. Ben and I had dated forย four yearsโ€”I had no true understanding of or experience with casually hooking up.

โ€œHey,โ€ Wit said now. โ€œSunscreen be damned. Letโ€™s take a dunk.โ€

โ€œYes, finally.โ€ I jumped up from my sweat-soaked towel, sighing contentedly when the cool water hit my skin. Wit immediately submerged himself in the shallows and did a goofy handstand before taking off for the pondโ€™s float. I flipped onto my back and did my best backstroke to follow him.

He pulled himself up onto the float first, and once on the edge, he stretched out a hand to help me before we swiftly fell back against the worn wood planks and kissed. The float was warm from the sun, but I shivered a little. Witโ€™s slick skin felt soย goodย against mine. His fingertips danced up along my waist as I tangled my hands in his wet hair, and our kisses sent slow spirals through me before I had to break away for air. โ€œHoly fuck,โ€ I breathed.

โ€œPayback for this morning,โ€ he said.

I laughed when he fiddled with my bikini strings. โ€œYou are soย notย subtle.โ€ He shrugged. โ€œOnly if youโ€™re comfortable.โ€

โ€œYes, of course.โ€ I ran my hands over his shoulders, down his wiry arms. Because yes, with him, I was comfortable, and if we only had a few more days together, I did want this. โ€œJust not here,โ€ I said and kissed his collarbone. We mightโ€™ve been the only ones at Secret Beach, but it wasnโ€™t like we wereย reallyย in private. โ€œLater?โ€

โ€œMmm, yeah,โ€ Wit murmured. โ€œLater. Right, all right.โ€ He sounded like he wasnโ€™t thinking straight. โ€œGood, all good.โ€

And then he just stiffly rolled off the float, flopping into the pond. A type of cold shower, I supposed. It was hilarious.

โ€œYou are wicked,โ€ he said when he broke the surface.

โ€œAnd you go wild for it,โ€ I said back, moving to dangle my legs off the float.

Wit splashed water at me. I kicked water at him.

How did we only have four days left?
