Chapter no 70 – GRAYSON

The Brothers Hawthorne

Iย can open this box. I just have to get it back to my hotel room.

Beside Grayson, Gigi pounced. โ€œWhat is it? You haveย somethingย face.โ€ Grayson liked to think he was a bit harder to read than that. โ€œPardon?โ€

He fell back on formal speech, one extra layer safeguarding everything he thought or felt.

โ€œWhat do you mean,ย pardon?ย I saw that light bulb go off, mister. The gears in your mind are turning. The hamster is officially on the wheel!โ€ From her spot beside him on the threadbare twin bed, Gigi rose to her knees, putting her hands on either side of the puzzle box and leaning forward. โ€œSix hamsters!โ€ she amended dramatically. โ€œSix wheels! Theyโ€™re all spinning.โ€

Time to do damage control.ย โ€œI think we need to go back over the box,โ€ Grayson told Gigi. โ€œLook for something that fits this opening.โ€

Savannah snorted. โ€œIt took six hamsters to come up with that?โ€

No.ย Grayson let the thought roll over him but kept all hint of it off his face.ย We wonโ€™t find what we need by examining the box. I already have it.

He could picture Sheffield Grayson retrieving the safe-deposit box key from inside his computer, removing the faux USB drive from the picture frame, driving to the bank, withdrawing money, adding the slip to the box, and driving out here.

Clearly, their father had had a system. A routine.

โ€œStop.โ€ A shrill voice hit Graysonโ€™s ears like fingernails on a chalkboard. โ€œPut the box down!โ€ Kimberly Wright hovered in the doorway, her entire body wound tight. โ€œYou shouldnโ€™t be here.โ€

Grayson knew somehow that she was talking to himโ€”andย justย to him.

โ€œIn my sonโ€™s room,โ€ she continued, her voice high-pitched but rough. โ€œSitting on his bed.โ€

This isnโ€™t about the bed. Or the room.ย Grayson wasnโ€™t certain what thisย wasย aboutโ€”or what had changed. He stood but made no move to hand over the box.

Gigiโ€™s forehead wrinkled. โ€œAunt Kim, weโ€”โ€

โ€œI wasnโ€™t good enough to be your aunt. Your father took my boy. Myย Colin. And once he was dead and gone, I wasnโ€™t even allowed to meet you girls. Shep didnโ€™t want me anywhere near you.โ€ Kimโ€™s eyes closed tight, and when she opened them again, they found Graysonโ€™s, like darts thrown with an unsteady hand that hit their target nonetheless. โ€œDo you two know who he is?โ€ Her tone turned accusatory. โ€œI saw those other boys outside. Cinnamon got away from me, and the taller one went after her. Introduced himself.โ€

Xander, Grayson thought. Alexander Blackwood Hawthorne had never met a stranger or baked good he didnโ€™t want to immediately introduce himself to.

โ€œTheyโ€™re Hawthornes.โ€ Kim spit out the name, then whirled on Grayson. โ€œYouโ€™re a Hawthorne,โ€ she said, the way a person might have said the wordsย youโ€™re a murderer. โ€œMy brother, sometimes heโ€™d bring bourbon with him when he came here. And the second it hit his lips, heโ€™d start talkingโ€” about Hawthornes.โ€

Grayson assessed his options for shutting this conversation down. Fast. โ€œWe should go,โ€ he told Gigi and Savannah.

Kim scowled. โ€œShepโ€”he always said that Toby Hawthorne was the reason Colin was dead, that Toby set the fire that killed my baby.ย Arson.ย And Tobyโ€™s father, that billionaire bastardโ€”he covered it up.โ€

To Graysonโ€™s surprise, Gigi stepped in front of him, shielding him from their aunt. โ€œEven if thatโ€™s true,โ€ she said, โ€œitโ€™s not Graysonโ€™s fault.โ€

Gigi wasnโ€™t tall enough to block Kimโ€™s desperate, angry stare.

โ€œMy brother hated you,โ€ the woman told Grayson. โ€œAll you Hawthornes. But he saidโ€”he said he was going to make sure youโ€™d all get yours. My brother was going toโ€”โ€

That was not a sentence that Grayson could allow her to finish. โ€œGoing to what?โ€ There was no threat in Graysonโ€™s tone, just a warning:ย Think

carefully before you answer. I am not a person you want to cross.

Kim clamped her mouth closed. Unlike her nieces, she wasnโ€™t immune to Graysonโ€™s ability to command a room and every person in it. โ€œGet out,โ€ she whispered, her voice hoarse. โ€œAnd leave the box.โ€

โ€œWe canโ€™t do that.โ€ Savannah came to stand in front of Grayson, right next to her twin, and for a split second, his heart clenched.

โ€œDid I give you a choice, girl?โ€ Kimโ€™s voice shook.ย โ€œGet out.โ€

Grayson gave a slight nod toward his sisters, then calmly began reassembling the puzzle box.

โ€œPut it down!โ€

โ€œAunt Kimโ€”โ€ Gigi tried.

โ€œI saidโ€”โ€

โ€œPut it down,โ€ Grayson finished calmly. He reached inside his suit jacket and removed his wallet. Opening it, he began to slip out bills. Not tens or twentiesโ€”hundreds. Staying in the black-card suite came with the expectation that one would be an excellent tipper. โ€œYour brother isnโ€™t coming back.โ€ Grayson did not enjoy being cruel, butย bribe,ย threaten,ย buy outโ€”that was the Hawthorne way. โ€œAnd even if he did come back, thereโ€™s no money left for him to give you.โ€

There were eight bills sticking out of the wallet now. In a single move, Grayson withdrew all of them and folded the bills in half over his thumb. His target stared at the money.ย Good.ย Kim brought her gaze to his.ย Better.

โ€œI know,โ€ Grayson said softly, โ€œthat your brother hated my family. He didnโ€™t want me. We met only once, and he made that quite clear.โ€

Sometimes, after you backed a person into a corner, the best way to ensure they took the out you offered was to show just a flash of humanityโ€” enough to make them think that maybe the two of you didnโ€™t have to be enemies, but not enough that they forgot who was in change.

Grayson held the money out to his aunt. Kim skittered forward and snatched it from his hands. โ€œTake the damn box,โ€ she said, her voice gravelly, โ€œand get out.โ€
