Chapter no 46 – GRAYSON

The Brothers Hawthorne

Gigi drove. It did not take Grayson long to ascertain that Gigi should not drive.

โ€œYouโ€™re over the line,โ€ he said mildly.

โ€œSo the car keeps informing me!โ€ Gigi swerved to correct the problem. โ€œBut letโ€™s talk aboutย you.ย Do you know what Savannah said after the party last night?โ€

โ€œI can only imagine.โ€

โ€œNothing,โ€ Gigi replied. She turned to give Grayson a look. โ€œThatโ€™s weird, right?โ€

โ€œEyes on the road.โ€

Gigi obligingly looked back at the road but wasnโ€™t deterred from making her point. โ€œAnd you just disappeared. Also weird. And the way the two of you reacted to my thinking-on-ye-old-feet subterfuge when Duncan asked what we were doing in his dadโ€™s office?โ€

Gigi paused, and Grayson gathered that he was supposed to reply. โ€œWeird?โ€ he suggested dryly.

โ€œExtremely!โ€ Gigi came to a stop at a light and turned to look at him once more. โ€œYou two have a history, donโ€™t you? Thatโ€™s why Savannah has been in cat-with-an-arching-back mode since you got here. Thatโ€™s why youโ€™re here.โ€ Gigiโ€™s voice grew almost tender. โ€œYou still love her.โ€

โ€œWhat?โ€ Grayson squeaked. He had never squeaked in his life, but some things could not be helped. โ€œNo,โ€ he told Gigi emphatically. โ€œI told youโ€”โ€

โ€œYou have a girlfriend,โ€ Gigi said with a roll of her eyes. The light turned green, and she accelerated. โ€œFine, then. What is this imaginary

girlfriend like?โ€

โ€œSmart,โ€ Grayson said, and there was still a part of himโ€”a fainter part now, like an echo or a memory or a shadowโ€”that had to fight to keep from seeing Averyโ€™s face when he said it. โ€œNot in a predictable kind of way.โ€ He paused. โ€œMaybe thatโ€™s a good word for her. Unpredictable. Unexpected.โ€

โ€œIn what way?โ€ Gigi asked.

Echoes faded. Shadows receded in light. And some memories were meant to stay in the past. So this time, Grayson didnโ€™t think about Avery. Instead, he thought about the black opal ring, about Nash holding his gaze and saying,ย Why not you?

โ€œI am not a person whoโ€™s easily surprised or easily defeated,โ€ Grayson said, his voice coming out thicker than it should have. โ€œMy partnerโ€ฆโ€ That make-believe impossibility of a girl. โ€œShe can do both. Sheย doesย both, frequently. Sheโ€™s not perfect.โ€ He swallowed. โ€œAnd when Iโ€™m with her, I donโ€™t have to be, either.โ€

โ€œHow did you meet?โ€

I am making her up as I speak.ย โ€œGrocery store. She was buying limes.โ€

Limes?ย Grayson cursed himself.

โ€œWas it love at first sight?โ€ Gigi asked with a little sigh.

โ€œI donโ€™t believe in love at first sight. Neither does she.โ€ Grayson swallowed. โ€œWe justโ€ฆย fit.โ€

Gigi held up a hand, which was mildly terrifying since she was turning left at the same time. โ€œOkay, youโ€™ve sold me on the existence of the mythical girlfriend. But can you at least admit that youโ€™ve been playing pretend since I met you?โ€

Grayson felt a twinge in his stomach.ย What exactly does she know?ย He didnโ€™t have time to consider that question. โ€œBrake,โ€ he told Gigi. โ€œBrake!โ€

She braked, and a moment later, pulled into the parking lot of the bank. Screeching to a stop and parking the car, she turned to look at him. โ€œYouโ€™re pretending to be Mr. Stoic, but I see straight through you.โ€ She grinned. โ€œYou like me. Notย thatย way, obviouslyโ€”which,ย same, buddyโ€”but in a friendly kind of way. Iโ€™m growing on you. Admit it, weโ€™re friends.โ€

She opened the door and jumped out of the jeep without waiting for a response. Grayson steeled himself.ย Weโ€™re not friends, Gigi.ย He got out of the vehicle and walked around to the front, his mind on what had to be done next.

The decoy key was still in his pocket.

โ€œNot a word about the fact that Iโ€™m not parked in the lines.โ€ Gigi expelled a breath, then she craned her neck up at the bank. โ€œLetโ€™s do this.โ€

Grayson stepped into her path. โ€œYou canโ€™t go in.โ€ โ€œYou sayย canโ€™t, I hearย definitely going toโ€”โ€

โ€œTheyโ€™ll recognize you.โ€ Grayson waited until he had her eyes before continuing. โ€œIt will be hard enough getting into the box without authorization. We donโ€™t want them calling the cops again.โ€ He gentled his tone, as much as he could. โ€œYou canโ€™t do this, Gigi.โ€

She looked down. โ€œBut you can?โ€

โ€œIโ€™m a Hawthorne. I can do anything.โ€ Grayson waited, just a beat, timing his next move with precision. โ€œAll you have to do is give me the key.โ€

Gigi pulled her necklace out from underneath her shirt, her eyes round, her fingers handling the necklace like it bore precious stones. โ€œI guess you donโ€™t need the chain.โ€ She unclasped it.

Regret hit him with surprising force. โ€œIโ€™ll take it anyway,โ€ he told her. โ€œFor good luck.โ€ She handed over the chain. He slid the key off it.

โ€œAnd Iโ€™ll go with Grayson,โ€ another voice added. โ€œFor good luck.โ€ Savannahโ€™s tone was perfectly pleasant on the surfaceโ€”and absolutely withering underneath.

โ€œSav!โ€ Gigi was delighted. โ€œYou said you werenโ€™t coming.โ€ โ€œI didnโ€™t, actually. You assumed.โ€

Grayson recognized himself in the way she said those words: the set of her chin, the even pacing of the words, the absolute control.

โ€œDo you have the ID I gave you?โ€ Savannah asked her twin calmly.

Gigi reached down the front of her shirt, then produced the card. โ€œHere!โ€

Grayson averted his gaze. โ€œMay I see it?โ€

โ€œNo, you may not,โ€ Savannah told him, but by the time the words were out of her mouth, Gigi had already placed Sheffield Graysonโ€™s fake ID in his hands. The first thing he noticed was the pictureโ€”and Sheffield Graysonโ€™s eyes.

Hisย eyes.

The second thing Grayson noticed was the name that Sheffield Grayson had chosen for his false identity: DAVENPORT, TOBIAS.

My middle name. And my grandfatherโ€™sโ€”and uncleโ€™sโ€”first.
