Gigi drove. It did not take Grayson long to ascertain that Gigi should not drive.
โYouโre over the line,โ he said mildly.
โSo the car keeps informing me!โ Gigi swerved to correct the problem. โBut letโs talk aboutย you.ย Do you know what Savannah said after the party last night?โ
โI can only imagine.โ
โNothing,โ Gigi replied. She turned to give Grayson a look. โThatโs weird, right?โ
โEyes on the road.โ
Gigi obligingly looked back at the road but wasnโt deterred from making her point. โAnd you just disappeared. Also weird. And the way the two of you reacted to my thinking-on-ye-old-feet subterfuge when Duncan asked what we were doing in his dadโs office?โ
Gigi paused, and Grayson gathered that he was supposed to reply. โWeird?โ he suggested dryly.
โExtremely!โ Gigi came to a stop at a light and turned to look at him once more. โYou two have a history, donโt you? Thatโs why Savannah has been in cat-with-an-arching-back mode since you got here. Thatโs why youโre here.โ Gigiโs voice grew almost tender. โYou still love her.โ
โWhat?โ Grayson squeaked. He had never squeaked in his life, but some things could not be helped. โNo,โ he told Gigi emphatically. โI told youโโ
โYou have a girlfriend,โ Gigi said with a roll of her eyes. The light turned green, and she accelerated. โFine, then. What is this imaginary
girlfriend like?โ
โSmart,โ Grayson said, and there was still a part of himโa fainter part now, like an echo or a memory or a shadowโthat had to fight to keep from seeing Averyโs face when he said it. โNot in a predictable kind of way.โ He paused. โMaybe thatโs a good word for her. Unpredictable. Unexpected.โ
โIn what way?โ Gigi asked.
Echoes faded. Shadows receded in light. And some memories were meant to stay in the past. So this time, Grayson didnโt think about Avery. Instead, he thought about the black opal ring, about Nash holding his gaze and saying,ย Why not you?
โI am not a person whoโs easily surprised or easily defeated,โ Grayson said, his voice coming out thicker than it should have. โMy partnerโฆโ That make-believe impossibility of a girl. โShe can do both. Sheย doesย both, frequently. Sheโs not perfect.โ He swallowed. โAnd when Iโm with her, I donโt have to be, either.โ
โHow did you meet?โ
I am making her up as I speak.ย โGrocery store. She was buying limes.โ
Limes?ย Grayson cursed himself.
โWas it love at first sight?โ Gigi asked with a little sigh.
โI donโt believe in love at first sight. Neither does she.โ Grayson swallowed. โWe justโฆย fit.โ
Gigi held up a hand, which was mildly terrifying since she was turning left at the same time. โOkay, youโve sold me on the existence of the mythical girlfriend. But can you at least admit that youโve been playing pretend since I met you?โ
Grayson felt a twinge in his stomach.ย What exactly does she know?ย He didnโt have time to consider that question. โBrake,โ he told Gigi. โBrake!โ
She braked, and a moment later, pulled into the parking lot of the bank. Screeching to a stop and parking the car, she turned to look at him. โYouโre pretending to be Mr. Stoic, but I see straight through you.โ She grinned. โYou like me. Notย thatย way, obviouslyโwhich,ย same, buddyโbut in a friendly kind of way. Iโm growing on you. Admit it, weโre friends.โ
She opened the door and jumped out of the jeep without waiting for a response. Grayson steeled himself.ย Weโre not friends, Gigi.ย He got out of the vehicle and walked around to the front, his mind on what had to be done next.
The decoy key was still in his pocket.
โNot a word about the fact that Iโm not parked in the lines.โ Gigi expelled a breath, then she craned her neck up at the bank. โLetโs do this.โ
Grayson stepped into her path. โYou canโt go in.โ โYou sayย canโt, I hearย definitely going toโโ
โTheyโll recognize you.โ Grayson waited until he had her eyes before continuing. โIt will be hard enough getting into the box without authorization. We donโt want them calling the cops again.โ He gentled his tone, as much as he could. โYou canโt do this, Gigi.โ
She looked down. โBut you can?โ
โIโm a Hawthorne. I can do anything.โ Grayson waited, just a beat, timing his next move with precision. โAll you have to do is give me the key.โ
Gigi pulled her necklace out from underneath her shirt, her eyes round, her fingers handling the necklace like it bore precious stones. โI guess you donโt need the chain.โ She unclasped it.
Regret hit him with surprising force. โIโll take it anyway,โ he told her. โFor good luck.โ She handed over the chain. He slid the key off it.
โAnd Iโll go with Grayson,โ another voice added. โFor good luck.โ Savannahโs tone was perfectly pleasant on the surfaceโand absolutely withering underneath.
โSav!โ Gigi was delighted. โYou said you werenโt coming.โ โI didnโt, actually. You assumed.โ
Grayson recognized himself in the way she said those words: the set of her chin, the even pacing of the words, the absolute control.
โDo you have the ID I gave you?โ Savannah asked her twin calmly.
Gigi reached down the front of her shirt, then produced the card. โHere!โ
Grayson averted his gaze. โMay I see it?โ
โNo, you may not,โ Savannah told him, but by the time the words were out of her mouth, Gigi had already placed Sheffield Graysonโs fake ID in his hands. The first thing he noticed was the pictureโand Sheffield Graysonโs eyes.
Hisย eyes.
The second thing Grayson noticed was the name that Sheffield Grayson had chosen for his false identity: DAVENPORT, TOBIAS.
My middle name. And my grandfatherโsโand uncleโsโfirst.
