Grayson imported the photographs heโd taken of Gigiโs key the night before to his laptop. Using his hand in the photo for scale, he calculated the keyโs dimensions, double-checked those calculations, and used them, along with a ghost image of the key, to begin building a digital model. By the time the Haywood-Astyriaโs personal concierge came to check on him midday, he was nearly done.
โIs there anything we can get you, sir?โ
For a black-card guest at this establishment, that question didnโt refer only to hotel amenities. โIโm going to need a 3D printer,โ Grayson replied. He didnโt have to provide a rationale for the request, so he did not. โPlease.โ
The concierge left. Grayson finished his work. Saving it, he made a second, nearly identical file, altering the keyโs teeth just enough to render this one useless.ย Sorry, Gigi.ย Not allowing himself to wallow in that thought, he turned his attention to an equally unpleasant one. โWhat exactly does one wear to a high school party?โ
Even when Grayson had been in high school, he hadnโt ever needed the answer to that question. His brothers had attended such parties occasionally, but Grayson had never seen the point. And if heย hadย gone, he wouldnโt have wasted a single second deciding what to wear. A fine suit was like armor, and Grayson had been raised to walk into every room armed.
But not tonight.
Tonight, he needed to blend in. Unfortunately, Grayson Davenport Hawthorne knew nothing about blending. โShorts?โ
Thankfully, his phone rang before he could meditate too long on that possibility. โZabrowski,โ Grayson answered, sliding smoothly into business mode. โI trust you have answers for me.โ
If you allow people to fail you, he could hear his grandfather lecturing,
they inevitably will. So donโt give them the option.
โI ran a basic background check on Kent Trowbridge,โ the private investigator reported.
โDo I pay you,โ Grayson said evenly, โforย basic?โ
โAnd then I fleshed it out,โ Zabrowski said hurriedly. โAs youโve probably gathered, the guyโs a lawyerโand very connected. Comes from a whole family of lawyers. Or maybeย dynastyย is the better word.โ
โI take it theyโre financiallyโฆย stable,โ Grayson translated.
โVery. And interestingly for your purposes, the guy grew up alongside Acacia Grayson nรฉe Engstrom. The Trowbridge and Engstrom families go way back.โ
Grayson filed that piece of information away. โAnything else?โ โHeโs widowed, one son.โ
Grayson was well aware of the son. โAnd the Grayson familyโs current financial situation?โ The list of assignments heโd given Zabrowski after the conversation heโd overheard between Acacia and Trowbridge was lengthy.
The detective kept his reply short. โNot good.โ
The muscles in Graysonโs jaw tightened. Heโd kept Zabrowski on retainer to make sure that the girls were taken care of, and he had been given the distinct impression that finances were not an issue in the Grayson householdโand never would be. โExplain.โ
โWhen the Engstrom matriarch passed away the year before last, everything was left to Acacia and her daughtersโin trusts.โ
Grayson thought about Acacia saying that her parents were the ones whoโd bankrolled her husbandโs companies. โAnd?โ He had no intention of letting Zabrowski off that easily.
โOutside of those trusts, all of Acacia Graysonโs assets were jointly held with her husbandโฆ who has since come under IRS and FBI investigation.โ
Grayson had never allowed himself a temper, so he didnโt lose it. He didnโt sayย What the hell have I been paying your retainer for?ย He didnโt have to. โWhat kind of investigation?โ he demanded with icy, unnatural calm.
That tone had put the fear of God and Hawthornes in better men than the detective. Grayson could practically hear him gulp.
โWhite collar, presumably,โ Zabrowski managed. โTax evasion, embezzlement, insider tradingโyour guess is as good as mine.โ
โDo I pay you toย guess?โ
โPoint is, the joint accounts are frozen.โ Zabrowski rushed the words. โSome have already been seized. Someoneโs keeping it out of the press, but
โโ
โAnd the money left to Acacia in trust?โ Grayson asked. Those funds would have been hers and hers alone, not subject to seizure based on her husbandโs crimes unless she was implicated as well.
โGone,โ Zabrowski said.
Grayson felt his eyes narrow. โWhat do you mean,ย gone?โ
โDo you know how many laws I had to break to even get this information?โ Zabrowski shot back.
โLetโs assume none,โ Grayson said in a tone meant to remind the private investigator that if lawsย hadย been broken, he couldnโt know about it. โContinue.โ
If Zabrowski resented being given orders by a person less than half his age, he was wise enough not to show it. โAcacia Graysonโs trust was drainedโpresumably by her husband before he fled the country.โ
Sheffield Grayson didnโt flee the country.ย โAnd the girlsโ trusts?โ Grayson asked.
โIntact and substantial,โ Zabrowski assured him. โBut the Engstroms must have had some reservations about their daughter and her husband, because neither were listed as trustees.โ
Grayson processed that in an instant and wasted no time with his reply. โAllow me to guess: Kent Trowbridge.โ
If the joint accounts were frozen and Acaciaโs trust was gone, that almost certainly meant Acacia was using her daughtersโ trusts to fund their living expensesโbut as trustee, Trowbridge would have to sign off on those expenditures. Grayson thought back to the night before, to the way the lawyer had put his hand on Acaciaโs shoulder, far too close to her neck.
โKeep digging,โ he ordered Zabrowski. โI want a copy of the trust paperwork so I can read through the provisions myself.โ
โI canโt justโโ
โI am not interested inย canโt.โ Grayson lowered his voice. Making someone strain to hear you was one way of ensuring they were that much more motivated to listen. โIโll also need the details of the IRS and FBI investigationsโbut donโt run afoul of either agency yourself.โ
โThat all?โ Zabrowski clearly meant that sarcastically, but Grayson chose to take the question at face value.
โYouโll find a transfer in your account, twice the retainer Iโve been paying.โ That was another power move: transferring the money before the other person had a chance to decline your offer. โAnd Iโll need a recommendation.โ Grayson pivoted to an easier ask, one to make the man forget for a second or two how tall the rest of the order was. โWho do you have who can discreetly make keys?โ
