Gigi saw him out but didnโt follow him down the front steps. As Grayson paced toward the Ferrari, he heard a voice farther down the drive.ย Acaciaโs.ย โYou left her there overnight?ย And didnโt call me?โ
Grayson could go still with a momentโs notice. Complete control of his body made it that much easier to disappear into his surroundings.
โShe has to learn sometime.โ That voice was male, unremarkable. โDo you know what would have happened if I hadnโt intervened, Acacia?โ
Pinpointing their location to be inside the portico, Grayson allowed himself two more steps in that direction.ย Silent. Measured.
โIt is not your job to teach my daughters anything, Kent.โ
โAnd thatโs not the only thing thatโs bothering you, Mrs. Grayson.โ
Trowbridge.ย Given that the two of them were clearly on a first-name basis, the fact that heโd chosen to address her as Mrs. Grayson felt pointed.
โGigi saw the investigators,โ Acacia admitted in a hushed voice that Grayson could barely hear. โIโm trying my best to protect the girls, butโโ
โWeโve been over this, Acacia. You donโt have the resources to protect anyone. Iโm doing the best I can, but you knowโโ
โI am going to handle this.โย Acaciaโs voice wasnโt hushed now.
โYour parents arenโt here anymore. Your husband is gone. And the moneyโโ
โI know.โย Acacia appeared, pacing outside the portico.
โIโll do whatever I can.โ Kent Trowbridge stepped out after her. He was shorter than she was and moved like a guy who prided himself on being fitter than men half his age. โYou know that I am here for you, Acacia. You
just have to let me be here for you.โ
The moment Grayson saw the lawyer place a hand on Acaciaโs shoulder
โfar too close to her neckโhe took three loud steps forward. Instantly, Trowbridgeโs hand dropped. Acacia stepped away from him, and they both whipped their heads toward the house.
โI hope Iโm not interrupting anything.โ Grayson didnโt raise his voice, but he had his grandfatherโs way of being heard. He walked, his pace unhurried, to a spot just short of the Ferrari, then paused and held out his hand, forcing his opponent to close the distance between them to take it.
โGrayson Hawthorne,โ he said, meeting the lawyerโs eyes.
He saw a spark of recognition at his last name. โKent Trowbridge.โ
Grayson let his lips curl slightly. โI know.โ There was power in those two words.ย Make them wonder what you know.
Trowbridge glanced back at Acacia. โWeโll talk later,โ he told her.
Grayson didnโt step into his own car until the lawyer was gone. He didnโt press Acacia on what heโd overheard. Instead, as he pulled out of the drive, he made a call. โZabrowski, you have exactly one chance to prove to me that youโre worth continuing to keep on retainer.โ
