Chapter no 27

The Crown (The Selection, 5)

โ€œI DONโ€™T UNDERSTAND,โ€ NEENA CONFESSED the next morning as I recounted the date to her. โ€œIsnโ€™t him confessing his devotion a good thing? Like, maybe he could be one of the top two instead?โ€

Everyone else was still at breakfast, so the office was empty. As the sun beamed through the windows, we sat together on a couch, legs curled beneath us, as if this was the morning after a slumber party.

โ€œI donโ€™t think so. Something about it felt so forced. Not that he didnโ€™t actually feel those things, but it was like he orchestrated a moment so I would have to hear it.โ€ I rested my head on my hand, the lines repeating in my head. โ€œAnd then I felt guilty. He talked about his dad and said Iโ€™d make a good Wesley and . . . it was all just off somehow.โ€

My free hand picked at the hem of my skirt as if my fingers could undo my tangled thoughts. โ€œI think what it was,โ€ I began, โ€œis that he said heโ€™d felt this way since the night of the kitchen fight, but we havenโ€™t really had much interaction since then, at least not one-on-one. So for him to have this growing, deep, serious attraction to me . . . where does it stem from?โ€

Neena nodded. โ€œItโ€™s like heโ€™s in love with someone he thinks you are, not who you really are.โ€

My whole body wilted in relief. โ€œThatโ€™s it. Thatโ€™s exactly what this feels like.โ€

โ€œSo send him home?โ€

I shook my head. โ€œNo, I promised Hale he could leave next. Heโ€™s ready, and I donโ€™t want to disappoint him, not after everything heโ€™s done for me.โ€

โ€œGood morning, Your Majesty. Hi, Neena.โ€ Lady Brice walked in, holding a muffin in her hand. โ€œYour Majesty, I have some documents from your brother for you to review. It appears France wants to renegotiate their trade deal. I think this will be the easiest one in years.โ€

โ€œAww, what a handy little thing, that Ahren.โ€ I was sure this was more Camilleโ€™s doing than his, but I knew his presence was helpful.

โ€œHe sure is. I also have three contracts for you to review from New Asia; theyโ€™re waiting on your desk. And the producer of theย Reportย would like to film an interview with you this afternoon, something about transition pieces, I donโ€™t know.โ€

โ€œOh, so, a nice, easy day?โ€ I joked.

โ€œAs always!โ€

โ€œLady Brice, did you help Dad this much?โ€

She laughed. โ€œOnly for a short time. Once you grew up, he wanted you to take on a bigger role. And as soon as you feel youโ€™re on your feet, Iโ€™ll happily step back, or maybe retire.โ€

I scrambled off the couch and grabbed her by the shoulders. โ€œNo. Not ever. You will live and die in this office!โ€

โ€œAs you wish, my queen.โ€

โ€œYour Majesty! Your Majesty!โ€ someone yelled.

โ€œJosie?โ€ I called, watching as she ran in. โ€œWhatโ€™s the matter?โ€ โ€œI was watching TV. Marid.โ€ She was gulping in breaths. โ€œWhat about Marid?โ€

She swallowed. โ€œHe was seen shopping for engagement rings. Itโ€™s all over the news.โ€

All the advisers flooded into the parlor as we watched everything unfold. Very quickly, the many people I didnโ€™t trust with my secrets were made all too aware of what Marid had been plotting and just how close he was coming to the crown.

โ€œHeโ€™s got the look of a king, doesnโ€™t he?โ€ one newscaster said. โ€œOf course he does! Heโ€™s descended from one!โ€ her cohort replied. โ€œReally, wouldnโ€™t that be so romantic?โ€

โ€œIt would. Oh, it so would, but she is in the middle of a Selection.โ€

The newscaster brushed her hand across the air. โ€œWho cares? Let them go.

None of them has the charm of Marid Illรฉa, not by a long shot.โ€ I flipped channels.

โ€œAccording to the jeweler, Mr. Illรฉa was looking at some rather expensive pieces, which would only be fitting if he is indeed planning to propose to the queen.โ€

โ€œThis is yet another unlikely event in a series of unprecedented moves surrounding the royal family. First, we have a Selection led by a princess instead of a prince. Second, we have a young woman ascending well before sheโ€™s been either fully trained or her father has passed. And now we have an outside suitor trying to steal the queenโ€™s heart before one of the Elite has a chance. It is absolutely fascinating.โ€

I flipped channels again.

โ€œKathy here was on hand when the young Mr. Illรฉa came in. Can you tell us what you saw?โ€

โ€œWell, he seemed a little bashful at first, as if he wasnโ€™t ready to admit why he was here. But after about fifteen minutes of him lingering along the

case, it was pretty obvious what he was looking for.โ€ โ€œAnd did he seem drawn to anything in particular?โ€

โ€œHe had me pull out at least a dozen different rings, and when nothing was quite what he was looking for, I told him we could design a piece for him if he liked, and he lit up. Iโ€™m hoping he comes back soon.โ€

โ€œSo would you choose Marid over, say, Sir Hale or Sir Kile?โ€

โ€œOh, goodness! I really canโ€™t say. All I know is, Queen Eadlyn is a very lucky woman to have so many eligible men fawning all over her.โ€

I couldnโ€™t take it anymore. I turned off the TV and fell with a huff onto the couch.

โ€œI should have known,โ€ I said. โ€œSilence seemed smart, but now heโ€™s made this huge.โ€

Mr. Rasmus grunted. โ€œWe need a plan.โ€

โ€œWe have a plan,โ€ I snapped. โ€œIs there anything we really could have done besides marrying me off faster?โ€

General Leger stood with his back against a bookshelf, still staring at the blank screen. โ€œWe could kill him.โ€

I sighed. โ€œI really donโ€™t want that to be my go-to move.โ€

Sir Andrews was angry, too, but for all the wrong reasons. โ€œYou shouldnโ€™t have provoked him.โ€

โ€œIโ€™ve done nothing,โ€ I shot back. โ€œYou were actively ignoring him.โ€

โ€œCalm down, Andrews.โ€ Lady Brice paced behind the couch, enraged. As I watched her, I caught Josie standing in a corner. She must have missed her opportunity to escape and was now trapped, looking afraid of the loud voices and anger that surrounded her. โ€œWe have to shut him up, once and for all.โ€

โ€œThe only way to do that is to get Eadlyn engaged,โ€ Sir Andrews stated. โ€œYes, weโ€™re aware,โ€ Lady Brice agreed in a tired tone. โ€œBut she shouldnโ€™t

be rushed into this. How can she have anything close to a successful marriage if she forces it?โ€

โ€œItโ€™s her duty to make it successful!โ€

โ€œDuty? Sheโ€™s a person,โ€ Lady Brice argued. โ€œSheโ€™s agreed to do this, and thereโ€™s no reasonโ€”โ€

โ€œShe has never been just a person!โ€ Andrews reminded her. โ€œFrom the second she was born, sheโ€™s been a commodity, and we need toโ€”โ€

General Leger was moving toward Andrews. โ€œSay that again. Iโ€™m not afraid to make deathย myย go-to move.โ€

โ€œAre you threatening me, you littleโ€”โ€

โ€œStop,โ€ I breathed. And it was amazing. With the quietest of commands, the entire room came to a standstill.

Iโ€™d known it was coming for me. And I really had come to terms with it. Marid had shown how much influence he truly had, and I had to fight him off. I couldnโ€™t help worrying that even marriage wouldnโ€™t keep the people on my side, but it was all I had left. โ€œLady Brice, if you would, please, bring Fox to the office. Itโ€™s time we said our good-byes.โ€

โ€œAre you sure, Your Majesty? Once you narrow it down to threeโ€”โ€

โ€œIโ€™m not narrowing it down to three.โ€ I swallowed. โ€œPlease send Hale soon after. Iโ€™ll be making my final choice this evening, and we will do a live broadcast tomorrow night instead of aย Report. No doubt, after this week, everyone will be watching.โ€

โ€œAbsolutely, Your Majesty.โ€

โ€œThere, Sir Andrews. You have your progress. My official engagement announcement will come from the palace tomorrow afternoon.โ€

โ€œAre you sure we ought to wait that long? If Maridโ€”โ€

โ€œIf Marid pulls another stupid stunt, it will be shot down in less than twenty-four hours. That is good enough for me, sir, so it is certainly good enough for you.โ€

I stood. It was done.

I was certain something would give me away, convinced that everyone in the room would see that a part of me had lost oxygen and was suffocating then and there. In my head, I watched Eikko pack his suitcase and disappear from my life forever. It was a new kind of pain, pressed into this doomed heart of mine.
