โGUESS WHOโS BACK AT THE PALACEย and asking to see you?โ Emmaline teases me as she brushes my hair.
I turn to look into her big blue eyes. โSebastian?โ
I had returned to the palace yesterday afternoon, but when I found out that Sebastian had been gone since Litha, I began to worryโthat heโd been hurt, that heโd somehow discovered that Iโd freed his prisoner, that he knew I was staying with Finn. No one knew where he was, and my mind was more than happy to supply me with terrible possibilities, however unlikely, paranoid, and self-absorbed they may have been.
Emmaline grins. โYes, of course Sebastian. He asked that we tell you heโll be coming by your room after sunset and heโd like to go on aย walk.โ The way she squeals, youโd thinkย walkย was code for something much more scandalous.
โDid he seem . . . excited to see me or serious?โ
I watch Tess in the mirror over my vanity as she makes my bed. โSeriously excited,โ she says with a wink.
Okay, so heโs not angry. Itโs a startโespecially since I know where the book is and need to ask him another favor.
โHow much of Faerie have you seen during your time with the queen?โ I ask Emmaline.
Emmaline smiles as she twists my hair back from my face. โWe serve the Seelie Court, so we go where they go.โ She frowns at the short lock of hair at the base of my neck. โI wish I could get my hands on the incompetent drudge who cut your hair.โ
โI told you it was an accident,โ I say, dodging her usual complaint. โJust leave the back down and it wonโt show. So does the queen haveย otherย palaces?โ
โOf course she does,โ Tess says.
โMany,โ Emmaline says, nodding.
This should have been obvious to me, but only yesterday, when Finn said that the book wasnโt in this palace, did it occur to me that the library Iโm
searching for isnโt either.
On the one hand, after my run-in with the Sluagh, I shouldnโt trust the mirror anymore. On the other hand, I have no other leads on the
Grimoricon, so I donโt have much of a choice. New strategy? Use the mirror but proceed with caution.
When I asked the mirror again this morning, I studied the image more closely than I did the first time, and the answer was right in front of me.
Waves crashed just beyond the library windows. If Iโd noticed that the first time I looked, I wouldnโt have wasted time thinking that there was some
secret second library in this palace. From everything Iโve seen here so far, we are nowhere near the sea.
Tess pours me a cup of tea, and Emmaline continues to fight my curls into submission while hiding the choppy pieces. โThe queen has several palaces throughout her territory. This is her primary residence, and the location of all the most formal events, but she only spends about half the year here. The other half she splits between her three other palaces.โ
I give my best attempt at a dreamy sigh. โI think if I were a powerful queen, Iโd want to spend my day by the sea.โ
The twins laugh. โMaybe because it would remind you of a certain princeโsย eyes?โ Emmaline says.
โWhenย youโre queen,โ Tess says, โyouโll be able to choose where you spend your time.โ
โSerenity Palace, the seaside castle, is lovely, but itโs not meant for the full court. Itโs more of a retreat for the royal family,โ Emmaline says. โBut I suppose you could change that.โ
โThereย isย a seaside palace then?โ I ask.
โOf course. The southern shore is thought by many to be the most beautiful part of the Seelie territory. Rumor has it that the queenโs parents were partial to Serenity Palace.โ
โPerhaps that is why she rarely visits,โ Tess says. Emmaline shoots her a sharp look, and Tess bows her head.
โWhy wouldnโt she want to visit a place that reminds her of her parents?โ I ask. Thereโs something more than grief here if they arenโt supposed to talk about it.
Emmaline shakes her head. โWe wouldnโt know, milady. Weโve only been in her service for ten years. The queenโs parents died twenty-one years
ago.โ
They exchange another worried glance. Iโm sure they know more, but theyโre too afraid to say it, and I decide not to push.
โI have an idea,โ I tell Sebastian as we walk through the gardens that night. โPromise you wonโt laugh at me?โ
The hot day turned cool with the setting sun, and I shiver in my
sleeveless sundress. Sebastian tucks me closer to his side, warming me with his body heat. โI suppose that depends on the idea,โ he says, grinning.
This morning he told me heโd been away for some important meetings. I think I believe him, but I canโt help but wonder what he thinks about the missing prisoner. I donโt want to believe he truly wouldโve killed Jalek, but the uncertainty is getting to me.
โTell me your idea,โ he prods.
โThe maids mentioned a beautiful seaside palace that your mother rarely uses. One that sits on the southern shore? I was thinking it might be nice for you and me to get away from all the pressures and demands of the court. To actually spend a couple of days where we can focus on each other.โ
He smirks and wriggles his brows. โOh, really?โ
I nudge his side with my elbow. โThatโs not what Iโm talking about, and you know it.โ
โThatโs a shame,โ he says, chuckling.
โSays the man who barely wants to kiss me,โ I tease, and when the
amusement falls off his face, Iโm reminded that heโs not human. So strange that when weโre alone together itโs easy to forget. โMale, I mean. Sorry.โ I cover the awkward moment with a smile.
He sighs. โMan, male, whatever. After two years living as a human, the label hardly matters to me. It was theย other part . . .โ I frown, not understanding, and he explains. โYou think I donโtย wantย to kiss you?โ
โWell . . .โ I bite my bottom lip, and his eyes follow. โHalf the time I canโt think of anything else.โ
โBut you donโt,โ I say softly, thinking of my conversation with Finn, of his revelation that Iย doย want Sebastian but I donโt want to risk his rejection when he finds out the truth. He was right, even if I donโt want to admit it.
Sebastian smirks. โCanโt you tell Iโm playing hard to get?โ
I laugh. โOh, I noticed. Playing at it for two years, it seems.โ
He cups my jaw and drags his thumb across my lips. The contact is like the first sip of sparkling wineโsweet, heady, and leaving me wanting more. โIs it working?โ
I swallow. โMaybe.โ
โYou really want to go away with me? Just the two of us?โ
โWouldnโt it be nice to go to a place where there arenโt so many eyes on us all the time?โ
โBrie, the reality of my life is that there are always people watching. Iโd like to tell you that I can give you anything, but the truth about ruling is that you donโt get a private life.โ
And if Iโm going to stay with him, this is a reality Iโm going to have to
accept.ย Thatโs the least of our problems, Bash.ย โEven getting away from the hordes of courtiers would be something,โ I say. โI always loved the ocean, and Iโd love to see what itโs like in your world.โ
His eyes soften, and he presses a kiss to the top of my head. โIf Iโm honest, the idea of having you to myself for a couple of days is incredibly appealing. Let me see what I can work out. I have to leave first thing in the morning, and I expect to be away all day.โ
My heart sinks, but I donโt know if itโs because Iโm that anxious to get to the book or because I donโt want him to go away again. โWhere do you go this time?โ
โWeโve had some trouble at the eastern border.โ He frowns. โOur security isnโt what it once was.โ
โYou mean the camps?โ When his expression hardens, I hesitate, but the words are already out there, so I go on. This is too important. โYou donโt help them lock up those innocent people, do you?โ
โWhat do you know about the camps?โ
โI . . . not much. Just that itโs Unseelie who are trying to escape
Mordeusโs oppressive rule and . . . Theyโre just trying to find a better life, Bash.โ I can see in his eyes that there is no way I should know even half that much. โI didnโt believe you would have anything to do with it. I thought you wanted to help peopleโno matter what court theyโre from.โ
โOf course I do. But you need to understand thatโโ He shakes his head. โIt doesnโt matter. You donโt need the details. Who told you about this?โ
โIโve just . . . heard people talking.โ โWhat people?โ
The anger in his eyes worries meโnot for myself, but for anyone I might implicate. After seeing him with Jalek, Iโm not entirely sure who Iโm dealing with. โI donโt know.โ
โI can trust you, right, Brie?โ
You can never trust a thief youโve welcomed into your home.ย โOf course.โ The lie is bitter on my tongue.
His shoulders relax. โI do, you know. For better or worse, I do.โ He brings my hand to his lips and kisses my knuckles before leading me back to the palace and my room.
I lie awake half the night, the bitter taste in my mouth making my stomach cramp.
Pretha gets me from my chambers shortly after breakfast, and guilt dogs me with every step to the carriage and every turn toward Finnโs.
I can trust you, right, Brie?
He canโt trust me, and I have to keep that secret until Jas is home safe.
When I consider the choice between Sebastianโs feelings and Jasโs freedom, the choice is obvious. Itโs easy. So why do I feel this way?
โWhatโs wrong with you?โ Pretha asks as the carriage stops in the village.
โNothing.โ I climb out behind her and we walk along in silence toward the house.
She stops at the front door. โDonโt lie to me, Brie. Itโs a waste of time.โ
โI just want my sister back. I want to find the damn book so Mordeus can tell me whatโs next. Iโm sick of everyone acting like we have all the time in the world. I want to finish this and get my sister and go home.โ But my voice cracks on the last word.ย Home?ย Is that what it is? We canโt stay in Fairscape. Gorst will never stop hunting me down for stealing from him,
and going back to Elora in any capacity means saying goodbye to Sebastian
. . . and to Finn and Pretha and the whole misfit faerie crew.
When I look up, Pretha is studying me. Maybe itโs just the nature of Eurelodyโs form, but her expression seems almost sympathetic. โAre you
and Sebastian fighting?โ
โNot at all.โ I shake my head and look away. Across the cobblestone
street, a faerie with angelic translucent wings and curled horns sweeps her front porch. โThe problem is that he trusts me and I need him to, but I feel like garbage every time I exploit that.โ
She frowns. โYouโve been put in an impossible situation.โ
I wait for her to give me some sage advice on helping said impossible situation, but she just pushes inside and gestures for me to close the door behind me. She shifts back into her own form and leads the way to the library.
The doors at the back of the dark hall are closed, and Kane stands guard, arms crossed in front of him, his red eyes glowing in the dim corridor.
Pretha looks between him and the closed doors and frowns. โMy brotherโs here early?โ
โThe king and queen are speaking with Finn and Tynan now, but the queen is expecting you to join them for lunch.โ Kane grimaces. โDo you want me to make excuses for you?โ
Pretha shakes her head. โI knew this was coming. Lunch, dinner? Does it really matter?โ Her tone is causal, but her gait, as she turns on her heel and storms to the sitting room, is anything but.
I look helplessly between Kane and the dark doorway where Pretha disappeared. โShould I leave her alone or . . .โ
Kane turns up his palms. โCanโt you do the female thing?โ I arch a brow. โTheย femaleย thing?โ
He waves a hand. โYou know, where you say the nice things and make her feel better even though sheโs heartbroken and loveโs a bitch?โ
โOh, I . . . Whyโs that aย femaleย thing?โ
He grunts. โYou thinkย Iโmย a good candidate for that job? I canโt even tell someone to have a good day without sounding like I secretly wish theyโd die.โ
He has a point. I frown, thinking this through. โSheโs heartbroken? Over whom?โ
He rocks back on his heels. โIf you want to know, you should go do the thing.โ I can tell by the way he looks after her that he hates not being able to be that kind of friend for her, but Iโm not sure Iโm a great candidate
either.
Nevertheless, I find myself heading into the sitting room. Prethaโs
standing at the front window, staring out at the street, her face blank, her eyes cold.
โDo you want to talk about it?โ
She tenses. โTo admit thereโs anything to talk about feels like a betrayal to my husband.โ
Oh. Well, then . . .ย โWhen did Vexius die?โ
โFour years ago. He was injured while taking a group of Unseelie refugees to a portal to the Wild Fae territory.โ She swallows. โHe didnโt recover.โ
No wonder she looked so stricken when Finn was hurt under the same circumstances. โFour years is a long time. Surely you can forgive yourself for developing feelings for someone.โ
She tears her gaze off the street and meets my eyes. Iโve never seen her look so old or so tired. โWhat I feel for Amira I felt long before I met
Vexius. Long before either of us married.โ
The name niggles at my memory. This is the meeting sheโs been dreading. โAmira is the queen of the Wild Fae?โ
Pretha nods and looks away again. โAnd my brotherโs wife.โ
โOh.โ My stomach sinks as I try to imagine this. โOh, Pretha, Iโm so sorry.โ
โYes, me too.โ Her puff of breath leaves a foggy patch on the window. โAmira and I were both your age when she was brought to my familyโs
palace. She was there to prepare to be Mishaโs bride, but I fell in love the first time I laid eyes on her.โ
โThatโs beautiful.โ My voice is heavy with sadness. I know where this
story is going. โThen she chose him over you?โ I wince at the sound of my own question. If Kane were here to witness my ineptitude, he may have handled this himself.
Pretha scoffs. โHardly. There wasnโt ever a choice given, not to either of us. The Wild Fae are more accepting than the Seelie of people like Amira and me. My parents raised us to believe that love is beautiful in all forms,
but I always knew that this acceptance stopped at the palace doors. To be in the royal family means living by a different set of rules.โ
โWhy?โ I ask. โWhatโs the difference?โ
โThey would tell you itโs about the power of bloodlines, but itโs really about appearances. And about their own discomfort with the idea of their
daughter loving another female.โ She sighs. โBut for three years Amira and I got to be together while they groomed her for her life as the queen. Misha didnโt care. He wasnโt marrying her for love, only to strengthen the alliance between our families. But when ourย parentsย found out?โ Her lips twitchโin amusement? Irritation? Old anger? Maybe a combination of all three. โYou can imagine my horror when they sent me away to marry the young brother of the Unseelie Prince.โ
โVexius,โ I say softly. I canโt imagine what it would be like to be
expected to marry someone for political reasons. Canโt imagine love having so little weight in the list of reasons you decide to spend your life with
someone. Yet this is exactly what Sebastian will deal with if I decide not to stay with him. โBut you eventually grew to care for him?โ
โSome days I wish I hadnโt,โ she says, pressing a fist to her chest as if
sheโs trying to stave off the ache there. โBut he was so damn easy to love.โ
โYouโre getting better,โ Finn says.
I gape at him. โWas that a compliment?โ
Weโre upstairs while Pretha takes lunch with her brother and the queen of the Wild Fae. Although I didnโt expect to be welcomed to that meal, I
assumed that Finn at least would be there for moral support for his sister-in-law. But no. The king and queen requested privacy.
โJust focus,โ Finn says.
Tynan folds his arms and lifts his chin in an I-dare-you pose.
The goal is to wrap him in shadowโnot like I would to bring someone through a wall with me, but toย trapย him in my shadows. A defensive maneuver Jalek swears is my only hope in combat, since Iโm pathetic with a sword.
Unspooling my magic, I zero in on Tynan and wrap him in shadowโ only to have it fall away when he shrugs.
โShould work fine,โ Tynan says, his eyes dancing. โAs long as your enemies stayย perfectly still.โ
I flash him a vulgar gesture but laugh. I might still suck at this, but Iโm making progress.
โFinn.โ Kane stands in the bedroom doorway. โWe have a problem.
Prince Ronanโs at the door.โ
That one name, and my good mood is gone. My stomach clenches hard. This is what I was afraid of. Heโs going to find out Iโm betraying him. How did he find me here?
Finn seems to have the same question. โDid you tell him where youโre spending your days?โ
I shake my head. โNo. He just knows Iโm with my tutor.โ
โWe planned for this,โ Finn tells Kane. โThatโs why weโre here, right? So send Eurelody to talk to him. Amira and Misha will forgive the interruption.โ
โWe would, but . . .โ Kane clears his throat. โHe has the real Eurelody with him. He tracked her down, and she admitted that she left the queenโs service years ago.โ
Finn mutters a curse.
Tynan grimaces. โWe need to get him out of here before he realizes that Misha and Amira are on the premises.โ
โI can go talk to him,โ I offer, though I have no idea what Iโll say. I just want to get rid of this sick feeling in my stomach. What will happen to Jas if Sebastian sends me home?
Finnโs brows disappear into his curls. โYou want him to know without a doubt that youโre here? That youโre working with us?โ
I flinch.
โThatโs what I thought. Stay put.โ He follows Tynan out of the room and shuts the door behind him.
I listen to the muffled sounds of the males downstairs.
I hear Finnโs low voice and Sebastianโs, but I canโt make out their words.
Thereโs another low rumble, and then suddenly silence. I canโt stand it anymore.
The bedroom door squeaks as I open it, and I flinch and quietly pad toward the top of the stairs.
โLet me inโโ Sebastianโs growl practically shakes the house. He stands toe to toe with Finn, who has Tynan at his side. The two princes are a
formidable sight, broad-shouldered and menacing, glowering at each other. โI know you have her here.โ
โMaybe your magic is failing you, Prince. Iโm sure youโll fix that soon enough, what with all those ripe opportunities waiting at your palace.โ I canโt see Finnโs face, but I can hear the sneer in his voice.
โShut up,โ Sebastian snarls. โDonโt act like youโre any better than I am.โ โLeave, boy. Go back to the castle and your doting mother. Go back to
your herd of human women desperate to hand their lives over to you.โ Finn takes two steps back, retreating into the house, but Tynan stays put, his
chest puffed out like heโs ready to strike.
โFinnian, youโre a bigger ass than I remember.โ
Finn gives a mocking half bow, and Sebastian turns on his heel and
stomps away. Tynan slams the door shut behind him and turns to Finn with a tight jaw. โI thought we could trust her.โ
โWe can,โ Finn says.
โThen how do you explainย that?โ
Finn shakes his head. โDonโt assume anything. Iโll take care of it.โ
I realize that Finnโs headed to the stairs, and I rush back to the bedroom, pulling the door shut behind me. At the window, I search the street for Sebastian, but heโs not there. He must have come here with his goblin and had him take him back to the castle.
The bedroom door creaks as it opens. โTrying to catch a glimpse of your true love?โ Finn asks.
I donโt turn around. โDo you knock?โ โNot in my own house.โ
โThen maybe I should justโโ I donโt get the chance to finish my empty threat before he spins me around and pulls my amulet from where I keep it tucked beneath my dress.
โWhy didnโt you tell me about this?โ Finn spends more time irritated and moody than happy, but Iโve never seen him likeย this.ย Anger blazes in his
eyes and turns the silver nearly white around his pupils. โItโs none of your business.โ
โBullshit. If Iโm going to keep you here, if Iโm going to riskย my peopleย to protect you, this is completely my business. Where did you get it?โ
I canโt risk giving this up. Iโve nearly died twice since arriving in this godsforsaken realm. Any protection Sebastianโs amulet offers me, I need.
โMy mother gave it to me.โ
He makes a fist around the amulet and yanks hard, breaking the chain before turning on his heel and heading toward the door.
โWhat the hell do you think youโre doing?โ I stalk toward him. His friends might be afraid of him, but Iโm not. โThatโs mine. You have no right
โโ
โNo right to destroy Prince Ronanโsย trackingย amulet? No right to keep him and the queen from knowing where youโve been spending your time?โ He grips the amulet so tightly his knuckles whiten.
โYou donโt know what youโre talking about. Itโs an amulet ofย protection.โ โIs it? How well did it protect you when the Sluagh got you in their
claws? How do you think your prince found you the night the Barghest caught you in the forest?โ
โIโโ The fight drains out of me and Iโm shaking as I lower myself to sit on the bed. I never questioned how Sebastian found me that night. I was just so relieved to be saved, and I figured . . . I figured he was a magical
creature, and it wasnโt so hard to believe heโd be able to track me.
Finn opens his palm so I can see the amulet. Once lustrous and sparkling, itโs turned the color of dirty water since Finn tore it off my neck. โHe was tracking you with this, and he followed you right to my door.โ
โIโm sorry,โ I whisper.ย Tracking me.ย Heโd told me it would protect me, but all heโd intended to do was keep tabs on me. A terrible thought occurs to me, and I snap my gaze to Finnโs. โThe Unseelie Court. I was wearing the amulet both times I went to speak with Mordeus.โ If Sebastian realizes Iโm tricking him, if he knows Iโm working for Mordeus to steal from his
courtโ
โThis amulet is too weak to work over such distances.โ Finn shakes his head. โHe wonโt know you went to Mordeusโat least not from this.โ He heads to the window. โIโll have Pretha take you back to the palace soon.
Sebastian will be looking for you now that he suspects youโve been with us, and I canโt risk him knowing about our alliance. Pretha will glamour one of the other tutors to make them believe theyโve been working with you all this time.โ
I nod. Of course. We have to address this. But will that be enough to convince Sebastian?
โDonโt come looking for us. Weโll need to relocate. Pretha will come to you when itโs safe.โ
Heโs going to have to move. To uproot his people and Lark. All because of me. โIโm sorry.โ
He shrugs, but I donโt miss the weariness in his expression. โThis was a temporary home anyway. Itโs part of a life in exile. Nothing we havenโt done before.โ
โYou and Sebastian . . . you didnโt fight.โ
When he turns, exhaustion tugs at his shoulders. โYou think that was a
friendlyย encounter?โ
โNo, but I was under the impression that you hated each other. I thought you might try to kill each other if you were ever in the same place.โ
He studies the amulet in his palm. โI donโt know what heโs told you about me, but I donโt wish your prince any ill will. His mother, on the other hand
โโ He tilts his head side to side, stretching his neck. Anger washes over his face, but then itโs gone just as fast. โSebastian isnโt my enemy.โ
Itโs a relief to hear, and as I return to the palace, I can almost convince myself that everything will be okay.
But when I open the door to my chambers, Sebastian is waiting by the windows. โHow is Prince Finnian?โ
