Chapter no 55

Then She Was Gone

Laurelโ€™s mother is still alive when Laurel pops in to see her the next day on her way to work.

โ€œStill here then?โ€ she asks, pulling her chair closer to her motherโ€™s. Ruby rolls her eyes.

โ€œYou know itโ€™s Christmas Day on Friday,โ€ she says. โ€œYou canโ€™t go and die before Christmas and ruin it for everyone. You do know that? If you were going to do it, you should have done it last week.โ€

Ruby chuckles and says, โ€œNext week?โ€

โ€œYes,โ€ says Laurel, smiling. โ€œNext week is fine. Itโ€™s always a quiet time.โ€

She takes her motherโ€™s hands and says, โ€œWeโ€™re having a big Christmas Eve do. At Paul and Bonnyโ€™s. Hanna will be there. Jake. My new boyfriend. His daughter. I wish you could come.โ€

โ€œNo thank you,โ€ says Ruby, and Laurel laughs. โ€œNo,โ€ she says. โ€œI donโ€™t blame you.โ€

โ€œHow is n-n-new b-boyfriend?โ€

The smile freezes on Laurelโ€™s face. She doesnโ€™t know how to answer the question so she smiles and says, โ€œHeโ€™s wonderful. Itโ€™s all good.โ€

But as the words leave her mouth, she can feel the heavy lie of them. Her mother feels it, too. โ€œGood?โ€ she repeats, concernedly.

โ€œYes,โ€ she says. โ€œGood.โ€

Her mother nods, just once.

โ€œIf you say so,โ€ she says. โ€œIf you say so.โ€

Laurel calls Jake when she leaves her motherโ€™s care home.

He picks up the call within two ringtones. โ€œMum,โ€ he says, a note of concern in his voice.

โ€œEverythingโ€™s fine,โ€ she says. โ€œNot an emergency. I just wanted to say hello.โ€ โ€œIโ€™m really sorry, Mum,โ€ he starts immediately. โ€œIโ€™m really sorry about me and

Blue and what we said to you the other day. It was out of order.โ€

โ€œNo, Jake, honestly. Itโ€™s fine. Iโ€™m sorry I overreacted. I think I was just so shocked to find myself in a relationship after so long I was a bit raw. Just wanted everything to be perfect. You know. And of course nothingโ€™s perfect, is it?โ€

โ€œNo,โ€ says Jake in a voice full of things heโ€™d like to say but canโ€™t. โ€œNo. Thatโ€™s true.โ€

โ€œAm I seeing you tomorrow?โ€ she says. โ€œAt Bonnyโ€™s?โ€ โ€œYes,โ€ he replies. โ€œWeโ€™ll be there.โ€

โ€œYou know Floyd will be there too? Will that be a problem?โ€ โ€œNo,โ€ he says, overly assured, she feels. โ€œNo. It will be fine.โ€

She takes a breath, ready to get to the point of her call. โ€œIs Blue there?โ€ she says. โ€œI wondered if we could have a word?โ€

โ€œYeah,โ€ says Jake. โ€œYeah. Sheโ€™s here. Youโ€™re not going to . . . ?โ€

โ€œNo. I told you, Jake. Water under the bridge. I just want to ask her something.โ€

โ€œOK.โ€

She hears him call out to Blue, who comes to the phone and says, โ€œHi, Laurel.

How are you?โ€

โ€œIโ€™m good, thank you, Blue. Iโ€™m fine. How are you?โ€ โ€œOh, you know. Busy, busy. As always.โ€

Thereโ€™s a pause and then Laurel says, โ€œListen, Blue, I wanted to apologize for the way I reacted last time we spoke. I think I may have been a little over the top.โ€

She can almost hear Blue shrug. โ€œDonโ€™t worry about it.โ€

โ€œNo, really. Iโ€™m sorry. And I just . . . Iโ€™ve been . . . I donโ€™t know. I suppose I just wanted to know more about why you thought what you thought when you met him.โ€

โ€œYou feel it, too.โ€

Laurel blanches and brings her hand to her throat. She feels horribly caught out. โ€œNo,โ€ she says, โ€œno. Itโ€™sโ€”I just want to know what you think, thatโ€™s all.โ€

Blue sighs and continues. โ€œFloyd has a dark aspect. Very dark. Dangerous, almost. But the discrepancy between his true self and the way he presents

himself is striking. Itโ€™s like heโ€™s taking cues from people. Working out how to be. And then thereโ€™s the way he is with his daughter. Itโ€™s not quite right. He watches her all the time, did you know that? You can almost see him prompting her under his breath. Like sheโ€™s acting, too, and heโ€™s there to stop her making a mistake, to stop her exposing him for what he is. I donโ€™t think . . .โ€ She pauses. โ€œI donโ€™t think he really loves her. Not in the normal sense of the word. I think itโ€™s more that he needs her, because she makes him human. Sheโ€™s like a cloak.โ€

Laurel nods and makes an affirmative noise, although she is still processing what Blue has said.

โ€œBut what you just said, about him being dangerous. What do you mean by that?โ€

โ€œI mean,โ€ says Blue, โ€œthat a man who canโ€™t love but desperately needs to be loved is a dangerous thing indeed. And I think Floyd is dangerous because heโ€™s pretending to be someone heโ€™s not in order to get you to love him.โ€

Laurel shudders at Blueโ€™s words. They chime so completely with her own feelings yesterday standing by the Christmas tree.

โ€œWhat about Poppy?โ€ she says. โ€œWhat did you make of Poppy?โ€

โ€œPoppy is like a rainbow. Poppy is everything. But she needs to get away from her father before he starts taking her colors away.โ€

There is a long pause. Then Laurel says, โ€œThank you, Blue. Thank you for your time.โ€ She slowly slides her phone into her handbag and drives to work feeling slightly numb.
