Chapter no 42

The Silent Patient

โ€œHOW IS ELIF?โ€ย I was waiting in the goldfish bowl and caught Yuri once he returned from the emergency ward.

โ€œStable.โ€ He sighed heavily. โ€œWhich is about the best we can hope for.โ€ โ€œIโ€™d like to see her.โ€

โ€œElif? Or Alicia?โ€ โ€œElif first.โ€

Yuri nodded. โ€œThey want her to rest tonight, but in the morning Iโ€™ll take you to her.โ€

โ€œWhat happened? Were you there? I presume Alicia was provoked?โ€

Yuri sighed again and shrugged. โ€œI donโ€™t know. Elif was hanging around outside Aliciaโ€™s studio. There must have been a confrontation of some kind. Iโ€™ve no idea what they were fighting about.โ€

โ€œHave you got the key? Letโ€™s go and have a look. See if we can find any clues.โ€

We left the goldfish bowl and walked to Aliciaโ€™s studio. Yuri unlocked the door and opened it. He flicked on the light.

And there, on the easel, was the answer we were looking for.

Aliciaโ€™s paintingโ€”the picture of the Grove going up in flamesโ€”had been defaced. The wordย SLUTย was crudely daubed across it in red paint.

I nodded. โ€œWell, that explains it.โ€ โ€œYou think Elif did it?โ€

โ€œWho else?โ€

* * *

I found Elif in the emergency ward. She was propped up in bed, attached to a drip. Padded bandages were wrapped around her head, covering one eye.

She was upset, angry, and in pain.

โ€œFuck off,โ€ she said when she saw me.

I pulled up a chair by the bed and sat down. I spoke gently, respectfully. โ€œIโ€™m sorry, Elif. Truly sorry. This is an awful thing to happen. A tragedy.โ€

โ€œToo fucking right. Now, piss off and leave me alone.โ€ โ€œTell me what happened.โ€

โ€œThat bitch took out my fucking eye. Thatโ€™s what happened.โ€ โ€œWhy did she do that? Did you have a fight?โ€

โ€œYou trying to blame me? I didnโ€™t do nothing!โ€

โ€œIโ€™m not trying to blame you. I just want to understand why she did it.โ€ โ€œโ€™Cause sheโ€™s got a fucking screw loose, thatโ€™s why.โ€

โ€œIt had nothing to do with the painting? I saw what you did. You defaced it, didnโ€™t you?โ€

Elif narrowed her remaining eye, then firmly closed it.

โ€œThat was a bad thing to do, Elif. It doesnโ€™t justify her response, but still

โ€”โ€

โ€œThat ainโ€™t why she did it.โ€ Elif opened her eye and stared at me

scornfully.

I hesitated. โ€œNo? Then why did she attack you?โ€

Elifโ€™s lips twisted into a kind of smile. She didnโ€™t speak. We sat like that for a few moments. I was about to give up, then she spoke.

โ€œI told her the truth.โ€ โ€œWhat truth?โ€

โ€œThat youโ€™re soft on her.โ€ I was startled by this.

Before I could respond, Elif went on, speaking with cold contempt. โ€œYouโ€™re in love with her, mate. I told her so. โ€˜Heย lovesย you,โ€™ I said. โ€˜Heย lovesย youโ€”Theo and Alicia sitting in a tree. Theo and Alicia K I S S I N G

โ€”โ€™โ€ Elif started laughing, a horrible shrieking laugh. I could picture the rest

โ€”Alicia goaded into a frenzy, spinning round, raising her paintbrush โ€ฆ and plunging it into Elifโ€™s eye.

โ€œSheโ€™s a fucking nutter.โ€ Elif sounded close to tears, anguished, exhausted. โ€œSheโ€™s a psycho.โ€

Looking at Elifโ€™s bandaged wound, I couldnโ€™t help but wonder if she was right.
