โHOW IS ELIF?โย I was waiting in the goldfish bowl and caught Yuri once he returned from the emergency ward.
โStable.โ He sighed heavily. โWhich is about the best we can hope for.โ โIโd like to see her.โ
โElif? Or Alicia?โ โElif first.โ
Yuri nodded. โThey want her to rest tonight, but in the morning Iโll take you to her.โ
โWhat happened? Were you there? I presume Alicia was provoked?โ
Yuri sighed again and shrugged. โI donโt know. Elif was hanging around outside Aliciaโs studio. There must have been a confrontation of some kind. Iโve no idea what they were fighting about.โ
โHave you got the key? Letโs go and have a look. See if we can find any clues.โ
We left the goldfish bowl and walked to Aliciaโs studio. Yuri unlocked the door and opened it. He flicked on the light.
And there, on the easel, was the answer we were looking for.
Aliciaโs paintingโthe picture of the Grove going up in flamesโhad been defaced. The wordย SLUTย was crudely daubed across it in red paint.
I nodded. โWell, that explains it.โ โYou think Elif did it?โ
โWho else?โ
* * *
I found Elif in the emergency ward. She was propped up in bed, attached to a drip. Padded bandages were wrapped around her head, covering one eye.
She was upset, angry, and in pain.
โFuck off,โ she said when she saw me.
I pulled up a chair by the bed and sat down. I spoke gently, respectfully. โIโm sorry, Elif. Truly sorry. This is an awful thing to happen. A tragedy.โ
โToo fucking right. Now, piss off and leave me alone.โ โTell me what happened.โ
โThat bitch took out my fucking eye. Thatโs what happened.โ โWhy did she do that? Did you have a fight?โ
โYou trying to blame me? I didnโt do nothing!โ
โIโm not trying to blame you. I just want to understand why she did it.โ โโCause sheโs got a fucking screw loose, thatโs why.โ
โIt had nothing to do with the painting? I saw what you did. You defaced it, didnโt you?โ
Elif narrowed her remaining eye, then firmly closed it.
โThat was a bad thing to do, Elif. It doesnโt justify her response, but still
โโ
โThat ainโt why she did it.โ Elif opened her eye and stared at me
scornfully.
I hesitated. โNo? Then why did she attack you?โ
Elifโs lips twisted into a kind of smile. She didnโt speak. We sat like that for a few moments. I was about to give up, then she spoke.
โI told her the truth.โ โWhat truth?โ
โThat youโre soft on her.โ I was startled by this.
Before I could respond, Elif went on, speaking with cold contempt. โYouโre in love with her, mate. I told her so. โHeย lovesย you,โ I said. โHeย lovesย youโTheo and Alicia sitting in a tree. Theo and Alicia K I S S I N G
โโโ Elif started laughing, a horrible shrieking laugh. I could picture the rest
โAlicia goaded into a frenzy, spinning round, raising her paintbrush โฆ and plunging it into Elifโs eye.
โSheโs a fucking nutter.โ Elif sounded close to tears, anguished, exhausted. โSheโs a psycho.โ
Looking at Elifโs bandaged wound, I couldnโt help but wonder if she was right.
