Chapter no 24

The Silent Patient

I KEPT THINKING ABOUTย what Max Berenson had saidโ€”about Aliciaโ€™s suicide attempt, following her fatherโ€™s death. There was no mention of it in her file, and I wondered why.

I rang Max the next day, catching him just as he was leaving the office. โ€œI just want to ask you a couple more questions if you donโ€™t mind.โ€ โ€œIโ€™m literally walking out of the door.โ€

โ€œThis wonโ€™t take long.โ€

Max sighed and lowered the phone to say something unintelligible to Tanya.

โ€œFive minutes,โ€ he said. โ€œThatโ€™s all you get.โ€

โ€œThanks, I appreciate it. You mentioned Aliciaโ€™s suicide attempt. I was wondering, which hospital treated her?โ€

โ€œShe wasnโ€™t admitted to hospital.โ€ โ€œShe wasnโ€™t?โ€

โ€œNo. She recovered at home. My brother looked after her.โ€ โ€œButโ€”surely she saw a doctor? It was an overdose, you said?โ€

โ€œYes. And of course Gabriel got a doctor over. And he โ€ฆ the doctorโ€” agreed to keep it quiet.โ€

โ€œWho was the doctor? Do you remember his name?โ€

There was a pause as Max thought for a moment. โ€œIโ€™m sorry, I canโ€™t tell you.โ€ฆ I canโ€™t recall.โ€

โ€œWas it their GP?โ€

โ€œNo, Iโ€™m sure it wasnโ€™t. My brother and I shared a GP. I remember Gabriel made a point of asking me not to mention it to him.โ€

โ€œAnd youโ€™re sure you canโ€™t remember a name?โ€ โ€œIโ€™m sorry. Is that all? I have to go.โ€

โ€œJust one more thing โ€ฆ I was curious about the terms of Gabrielโ€™s will.โ€ A slight intake of breath, and Maxโ€™s tone instantly sharpened. โ€œHis will?

I really donโ€™t see the relevanceโ€”โ€ โ€œWas Alicia the main beneficiary?โ€

โ€œI must say, I find that rather an odd question.โ€ โ€œWell, Iโ€™m trying to understandโ€”โ€

โ€œUnderstand what?โ€ Max went on without waiting for a reply, sounding annoyed. โ€œI was the main beneficiary. Alicia had inherited a great deal of money from her father, so Gabriel felt she was well provided for. And so he left the bulk of his estate to me. Of course, he had no idea his estate would become so valuable after his death. Is that it?โ€

โ€œAnd what about Aliciaโ€™s will? When she dies, who inherits?โ€

โ€œThat,โ€ Max said firmly, โ€œis more than I can tell you. And I sincerely hope this will be our last conversation.โ€

There was a click as he hung up. But something in his tone told me this wouldnโ€™t be the last Iโ€™d hear from Max Berenson.

I didnโ€™t have to wait long.

Diomedes called me into his office after lunch. He looked up when I walked in but didnโ€™t smile. โ€œWhat is the matter with you?โ€

โ€œWith me?โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t play the idiot. You know who I had a call from this morning? Max Berenson. He says you contacted him twice and asked a lot of personal questions.โ€

โ€œI asked him for some information about Alicia. He seemed fine with

it.โ€

โ€œWell, heโ€™s not fine now. Heโ€™s calling it harassment.โ€ โ€œOh, come onโ€”โ€

โ€œThe last thing we need is a lawyer making a fuss. Everything you do

must be within the confines of the unit, and under my supervision. Understood?โ€

I was angry, but I nodded. I stared at the floor like a sullen teenager.

Diomedes responded appropriately, giving me a paternal pat on the shoulder. โ€œTheo. Let me give you some advice. Youโ€™re going about this the wrong way. Youโ€™re asking questions, searching for clues, like itโ€™s a detective story.โ€ He laughed and shook his head. โ€œYou wonโ€™t get to it like that.โ€

โ€œGet to what?โ€

โ€œThe truth. Remember Bion: โ€˜No memoryโ€”no desire.โ€™ No agendaโ€”as a therapist, your only goal is to be present and receptive to your feelings as you sit with her. Thatโ€™s all you need to do. The rest will take care of itself.โ€

โ€œI know. Youโ€™re right.โ€

โ€œYes, I am. And donโ€™t let me hear youโ€™ve been making any more visits to Aliciaโ€™s relations, understood?โ€

โ€œYou have my word.โ€
