I DESPERATELY NEEDED A CIGARETTE. As I left the Grove, I looked for them in my coat pockets, but they werenโt there.
โLooking for something?โ
I turned around. Yuri was standing right behind me. I hadnโt heard him and I was a little startled to find him so close.
โI found them in the nursesโ station.โ He grinned, handing me my pack of cigarettes. โMust have fallen out of your pocket.โ
โThanks.โ I took them and lit one. I offered him the packet.
Yuri shook his head. โI donโt smoke. Not cigarettes, anyway.โ He laughed. โYou look like you need a drink. Come on, Iโll buy you a pint.โ
I hesitated. My instinct was to refuseโI had never been one for socializing with work colleagues. And I doubted Yuri and I had much in common. But he probably knew Alicia better than anyone else at the Grove
โand his insights might prove useful. โSure,โ I said. โWhy not?โ
We went to a pub near the station, the Slaughtered Lamb. Dark and dingy, it had seen better days; so had the old men dozing over their half-finished pints. Yuri got us a couple of beers, and we sat at a table at the back.
Yuri took a long swig of beer and wiped his mouth. โWell? Tell me about Alicia.โ
โAlicia?โ
โHow did you find her?โ โIโm not sure I did find her.โ
Yuri gave me a quizzical look, then smiled. โShe doesnโt want to be found? Yeah, itโs true. Sheโs hiding.โ
โYouโre close to her. I can see that.โ
โI take special care of her. No one knows her like I do, not even Professor Diomedes.โ
His voice had a boastful note. It annoyed me for some reasonโI wondered how well he really knew her, or if he was just bragging.
โWhat do you make of her silence? What do you think it means?โ
Yuri shrugged. โI guess it means sheโs not ready to talk. Sheโll talk when sheโs ready.โ
โReady for what?โ
โReady for the truth, my friend.โ โAnd what is that?โ
Yuri cocked his head to one side slightly, studying me. The question that came out of his mouth surprised me.
โAre you married, Theo?โ I nodded. โI am, yes.โ
โYeah, I thought so. I was married once too. We moved here from Latvia. But she didnโt fit in like I did. She didnโt make an effort, you know, she didnโt learn English. Anyway, it wasnโt โฆ I wasnโt happyโbut I was in denial, lying to myself.โฆโ He drained his drink and completed his sentence. โUntil I fell in love.โ
โPresumably you donโt mean with your wife?โ
Yuri laughed and shook his head. โNo. A woman who lived near me. A very beautiful woman. It was love at first sight. I saw her on the street. It took me a long time to get the courage to talk her. I used to follow her.โฆ Iโd watch her sometimes, without her knowing. Iโd stand outside her house and look, hoping she would appear at the window.โ He laughed.
This story was starting to make me feel uncomfortable. I finished my beer and glanced at my watch, hoping Yuri would take the hint, but he didnโt.
โOne day I tried speaking to her. But she wasnโt interested in me. I tried a few times, but she told me to stop pestering her.โ
I didnโt blame her, I thought. I was about to make my excuses, but Yuri kept talking.
โIt was very hard to accept. I was sure we were meant to be together.
She broke my heart. I got very angry with her. Very mad.โ โAnd what happened?โ I was curious despite myself. โNothing.โ
โNothing? You stayed with your wife?โ
Yuri shook his head. โNo. It was over with her. But it took falling for this woman for me to admit it โฆ to face the truth about me and my wife. Sometimes it takes courage, you know, and a long time, to be honest.โ
โI see. And you think Aliciaโs not ready to face the truth about her marriage? Is that what youโre saying? You may well be right.โ
Yuri shrugged. โAnd now Iโm engaged to a nice girl from Hungary. She works in a spa. She speaks good English. Weโre a good match. We have a good time.โ
I nodded and checked my watch again. I picked up my coat. โI have to go. Iโm late to meet my wife.โ
โOkay, no problem โฆ Whatโs her name? Your wife?โ
For some reason, I didnโt want to tell him. I didnโt want Yuri to know anything about her. But that was stupid.
โKathryn. Her name is Kathryn. But I call her Kathy.โ
Yuri gave me an odd smile. โLet me give you some advice. Go home to your wife. Go home to Kathy, who loves you.โฆ And leave Alicia behind.โ
