โHEY, MELISSAโฆ,โ said Robert. โAm I getting through? Can you see me?โ โLoud and clear, babe,โ said Commander Lewis. โThe video link is solid.โ โThey say I have five minutes,โ Robert said.
โBetter than nothing,โ Lewis said. Floating in her quarters, she gently touched the bulkhead to stop drifting. โItโs nice to see you in real-time for a change.โ
โYeah.โ Robert smiled. โI can hardly notice the delay. I gotta say, I wish you were coming home.โ
Lewis sighed. โMe, too, babe.โ
โDonโt get me wrong,โ Robert quickly added. โI understand why youโre doing all this. Still, from a selfish point of view, I miss my wife. Hey, are you floating?โ
โHuh?โ Lewis said. โOh, yeah. The ship isnโt spinning right now. No centripetal gravity.โ
โWhy not?โ
โBecause weโre docking with theย Taiyang Shenย in a few days. We canโt spin while we dock with things.โ
โI see,โ said Robert. โSo how are things up on the ship? Anyone giving you shit?โ
โNo.โ Lewis shook her head. โTheyโre a good crew; Iโm lucky to have them.โ โOh hey!โ Robert said. โI found a great addition to our collection!โ
โOh? Whatโd you get?โ
โAn original-production eight-track ofย Abbaโs Greatest Hits. Still in the original packaging.โ
Lewis widened her eyes. โSeriously? A 1976 or one of the reprints?โ โ1976 all the way.โ
โWow! Good find!โ โI know, right!?โ
โขโขโข
WITH Aย final shudder, the jetliner came to a stop at the gate.
โOh gods,โ said Venkat, massaging his neck. โThat was the longest flight Iโve ever been on.โ
โMm,โ said Teddy, rubbing his eyes.
โAt least we donโt have to go to Jiuquan till tomorrow,โ Venkat moaned. โFourteen and a half hours of flying is enough for one day.โ
โDonโt get too comfortable,โ Teddy said. โWe still have to go through customs, and weโll probably have to fill out a bunch of forms because weโre
U.S. government officials.โฆ Itโs gonna be hours before we sleep.โ โCraaaap.โ
Gathering their carry-on luggage, they trudged off the plane with the rest of the weary travelers.
Beijing Capital International Airportโs Terminal 3 echoed with the cacophony common to huge air terminals. Venkat and Teddy moved toward the long immigration line as the Chinese citizens from their flight split off to go to a simpler point-of-entry process.
As Venkat took his place in line, Teddy filed in behind him and scanned the terminal for a convenience store. Any form of caffeine would be welcome.
โExcuse me, gentlemen,โ came a voice from beside them.
They turned to see a young Chinese man wearing jeans and a polo shirt. โMy name is Su Bin Bao,โ he said in perfect English. โI am an employee of the China National Space Administration. I will be your guide and translator during your stay in the Peopleโs Republic of China.โ
โNice to meet you, Mr. Su,โ Teddy said. โIโm Teddy Sanders, and this is Dr.
Venkat Kapoor.โ
โWe need sleep,โ Venkat said immediately. โJust as soon as we get through customs, please get us to our hotel.โ
โI can do better than that, Dr. Kapoor.โ Su smiled. โYou are official guests of the Peopleโs Republic of China. You have been preauthorized to bypass customs. I can take you to your hotel immediately.โ
โI love you,โ Venkat said.
โTell the Peopleโs Republic of China we said thanks,โ Teddy added. โIโll pass that along.โ Su Bin smiled.
โขโขโข
โHELENA, MY LOVE,โย Vogel said to his wife. โI trust you are well?โ โYes,โ she said. โIโm fine. But I do miss you.โ
โSorry.โ
โCanโt be helped.โ She shrugged. โHow are our monkeys?โ
โThe children are fine.โ She smiled. โEliza has a crush on a new boy in her class, and Victor has been named goalkeeper for his high schoolโs team.โ
โExcellent!โ Vogel said. โI hear you are at Mission Control. Was NASA unable to pipe the signal to Bremen?โ
โThey could have,โ she said. โBut it was easier for them to bring me to Houston. A free vacation to the United States. Who am I to turn that down?โ
โWell played. And how is my mother?โ
โAs well as can be expected,โ Helena said. โShe has her good days and bad days. She did not recognize me on my last visit. In a way, itโs a blessing. She doesnโt have to worry about you like I do.โ
โShe hasnโt worsened?โ he asked.
โNo, sheโs about the same as when you left. The doctors are sure sheโll still be here when you return.โ
โGood,โ he said. โI was worried Iโd seen her for the last time.โ โAlex,โ Helena said, โwill you be safe?โ
โAs safe as we can be,โ he said. โThe ship is in perfect condition, and after receiving the Taiyang Shen, we will have all the supplies we need for the remainder of the journey.โ
โBe careful.โ
โI will, my love,โ Vogel promised.
โขโขโข
โWELCOME TO JIUQUAN,โย Guo Ming said. โI hope your flight was smooth?โ
Su Bin translated Guo Mingโs words as Teddy took the second-best seat in the observation room. He looked through the glass to Jiuquanโs Mission Control Center. It was remarkably similar to Houstonโs, though Teddy couldnโt read any of the Chinese text on the big screens.
โYes, thank you,โ Teddy said. โThe hospitality of your people has been wonderful. The private jet you arranged to bring us here was a nice touch.โ
โMy people have enjoyed working with your advance team,โ Guo Ming said.
โThe last month has been very interesting. Attaching an American probe to a Chinese booster. I believe this is the first time itโs ever been done.โ
โIt just goes to show,โ Teddy said. โLove of science is universal across all cultures.โ
Guo Ming nodded. โMy people have especially commented on the work ethic of your man, Mitch Henderson. He is very dedicated.โ
โHeโs a pain in the ass,โ Teddy said.
Su Bin paused before translating but pressed on.
Guo Ming laughed. โYou can say that,โ he said. โI cannot.โ
โขโขโข
โSO EXPLAINย it again,โ Beckโs sister Amy said. โWhy do you have to do an EVA?โ
โI probably donโt,โ Beck explained. โI just need to be ready to.โ
โWhy?โ
โIn case the probe canโt dock with us. If something goes wrong, itโll be my job to go out and grab it.โ
โCanโt you just moveย Hermesย to dock with it?โ
โNo way,โ Beck said. โHermesย isย huge.ย Itโs not made for fine maneuvering control.โ
โWhy does it have to be you?โ โโCause Iโm the EVA specialist.โ โBut I thought you were the doctor.โ
โI am,โ Beck said. โEveryone has multiple roles. Iโm the doctor, the biologist, and the EVA specialist. Commander Lewis is our geologist. Johanssen is the sysop and reactor tech. And so on.โ
โHow about that good-looking guyโฆMartinez?โ Amy asked. โWhat does he do?โ
โHe pilots the MDV and MAV,โ Beck said. โHeโs also married with a kid, you lecherous homewrecker.โ
โAh well. How about Watney? What did he do?โ
โHeโs our botanist and engineer. And donโt talk about him in the past tense.โ โEngineer? Like Scotty?โ
โKind of,โ Beck said. โHe fixes stuff.โ
โI bet thatโs coming in handy now.โ โYeah, no shit.โ
โขโขโข
THE CHINESEย had arranged a small conference room for the Americans to work in. The cramped conditions were luxurious by Jiuquan standards. Venkat was working on budget spreadsheets when Mitch came in, so he was glad for the interruption.
โTheyโre a weird bunch, these Chinese nerds,โ Mitch said, collapsing into a
chair. โBut they make a good booster.โ
โGood,โ Venkat said. โHowโs the linkage between the booster and our probe?โ
โIt all checks out,โ Mitch said. โJPL followed the specs perfectly. It fits like a glove.โ
โAny concerns or reservations?โ Venkat asked.
โYeah. Iโm concerned about what I ate last night. I think it had an eyeball in it.โ
โIโm sure there wasnโt an eyeball.โ
โThe engineers here made it for me special,โ Mitch said.
โThere may have been an eyeball,โ Venkat said. โThey hate you.โ โWhy?โ
โโCause youโre a dick, Mitch,โ Venkat said. โA total dick. To everyone.โ
โFair enough. So long as the probe gets toย Hermes, they can burn me in effigy for all I care.โ
โขโขโข
โWAVE TO DADDY!โย Marissa said, waving Davidโs hand at the camera. โWave to Daddy!โ
โHeโs too young to know whatโs going on,โ Martinez said.
โJust think of the playground cred heโll have later in life,โ she said. โโMy dad went to Mars. Whatโs your dad do?โโ
โYes, Iโm pretty awesome,โ he agreed.
Marissa continued to wave Davidโs hand at the camera. David was more
interested in his other hand, which was actively engaged in picking his nose. โSo,โ Martinez said, โyouโre pissed.โ
โYou can tell?โ Marissa asked. โI tried to hide it.โ
โWeโve been together since we were fifteen. I know when youโre pissed.โ โYou volunteered to extend the mission five hundred and thirty-three days,โ
she said, โasshole.โ
โYeah,โ Martinez said. โI figured thatโd be the reason.โ
โYour son will be in kindergarten when you get back. He wonโt have any memories of you.โ
โI know,โ Martinez said.
โI have to wait another five hundred and thirty-three days to get laid!โ โSo do I,โ he said defensively.
โI have to worry about you that whole time,โ she added. โYeah,โ he said. โSorry.โ
She took a deep breath. โWeโll get past it.โ โWeโll get past it,โ he agreed.
โขโขโข
โWELCOME TOย CNNโsย Mark Watney Report. Today, we have the director of Mars operations, Venkat Kapoor. Heโs speaking to us live via satellite from China. Dr. Kapoor, thank you for joining us.โ
โHappy to do it,โ Venkat said.
โSo, Dr. Kapoor, tell us about theย Taiyang Shen.ย Why go to China to launch a probe? Why not launch it from the US?โ
โHermesย isnโt going to orbit Earth,โ Venkat said. โItโs just passing by on its way to Mars. And its velocity isย huge. We need a booster capable of not only escaping Earthโs gravity but matchingย Hermesโs current velocity. Only theย Taiyang Shenย has enough power to do that.โ
โTell us about the probe itself.โ
โIt was a rush job,โ Venkat said. โJPL only had thirty days to put it together. They had to be as safe and efficient as they could. Itโs basically a shell full of food and other supplies. It has a standard satellite thruster package for maneuvering, but thatโs it.โ
โAnd thatโs enough to fly toย Hermes?โ
โTheย Taiyang Shenย will send it toย Hermes. The thrusters are for fine control and docking. And JPL didnโt have time to make a guidance system. So itโll be remote-controlled by a human pilot.โ
โWho will be controlling it?โ Cathy asked.
โThe Ares 3 pilot, Major Rick Martinez. As the probe approachesย Hermes, heโll take over and guide it to the docking port.โ
โAnd what if thereโs a problem?โ
โHermesย will have their EVA specialist, Dr. Chris Beck, suited up and ready the whole time. If necessary, he will literally grab the probe with his hands and drag it to the docking port.โ
โSounds kind of unscientific.โ Cathy laughed.
โYou want unscientific?โ Venkat smiled. โIf the probe canโt attach to the docking port for some reason, Beck will open the probe and carry its contents to the airlock.โ
โLike bringing in the groceries?โ Cathy asked.
โExactly like that,โ Venkat said. โAnd we estimate it would take four trips back and forth. But thatโs all an edge case. We donโt anticipate any problems with the docking process.โ
โSounds like youโre covering all your bases.โ Cathy smiled.
โWe have to,โ Venkat said. โIf they donโt get those suppliesโฆWell, they need those supplies.โ
โThanks for taking the time to answer our questions,โ Cathy said. โAlways a pleasure, Cathy.โ
โขโขโข
JOHANSSENโS FATHERย fidgeted in the chair, unsure what to say. After a moment, he pulled a handkerchief from his pocket and mopped sweat from his balding head.
โWhat if the probe doesnโt get to you?โ he asked.
โTry not to think about that,โ Johanssen said.
โYour mother is so worried she couldnโt even come.โ โIโm sorry,โ Johanssen mumbled, looking down.
โShe canโt eat, she canโt sleep, she feels sick all the time. Iโm not much better.
How can they make you do this?โ
โTheyโre not โmakingโ me do it, Dad. I volunteered.โ
โWhy would you do that to your mother?โ he demanded.
โSorry,โ Johanssen mumbled. โWatneyโs my crewmate. I canโt just let him die.โ
He sighed. โI wish weโd raised you to be more selfish.โ She chuckled quietly.
โHow did I end up in this situation? Iโm the district sales manager of a napkin factory. Why is my daughter in space?โ
Johanssen shrugged.
โYou were always scientifically minded,โ he said. โIt was great! Straight-A student. Hanging around nerdy guys too scared to try anything. No wild side at all. You were every fatherโs dream daughter.โ
โThanks, Dad, Iโโ
โBut then you got on a giant bomb that blasted you to Mars. And I mean that literally.โ
โTechnically,โ she corrected, โthe booster only took me into orbit. It was the nuclear-powered ion engine that took me to Mars.โ
โOh, much better!โ
โDad, Iโll be all right. Tell Mom Iโll be all right.โ
โWhat good will that do?โ he said. โSheโs going to be tied up in knots until youโre back home.โ
โI know,โ Johanssen mumbled. โButโฆโ โWhat? But what?โ
โI wonโt die. I really wonโt. Even if everything goes wrong.โ โWhat do you mean?โ
Johanssen furrowed her brow. โJust tell Mom I wonโt die.โ โHow? I donโt understand.โ
โI donโt want to get into the how,โ Johanssen said.
โLook,โ he said, leaning toward the camera, โIโve always respected your privacy and independence. I never tried to pry into your life, never tried to control you. Iโve been really good about that, right?โ
โYeah.โ
โSo in exchange for a lifetime of staying out of your business, let me nose in just this once. What are you not telling me?โ
She fell silent for several seconds. Finally, she said, โThey have a plan.โ โWho?โ
โThey always have a plan,โ she said. โThey work out everything in advance.โ
โWhat plan?โ
โThey picked me to survive. Iโm youngest. I have the skills necessary to get home alive. And Iโm the smallest and need the least food.โ
โWhat happens if the probe fails, Beth?โ her father asked.
โEveryone would die but me,โ she said. โTheyโd all take pills and die. Theyโll do it right away so they donโt use up any food. Commander Lewis picked me to be the survivor. She told me about it yesterday. I donโt think NASA knows about it.โ
โAnd the supplies would last until you got back to Earth?โ
โNo,โ she said. โWe have enough food left to feed six people for a month. If I was the only one, it would last six months. With a reduced diet I could stretch it to nine. But itโll be seventeen months before I get back.โ
โSo how would you survive?โ
โThe supplies wouldnโt be the only source of food,โ she said. He widened his eyes. โOhโฆoh my godโฆโ
โJust tell Mom the supplies would last, okay?โ
โขโขโข
AMERICAN ANDย Chinese engineers cheered together at Jiuquan Mission Control.
The main screen showedย Taiyang Shenโs contrail wafting in the chilly Gobi sky. The ship, no longer visible to the naked eye, pressed onward toward orbit. Its deafening roar dwindled to a distant rumbling thunder.
โPerfect launch,โ Venkat exclaimed. โOf course,โ said Zhu Tao.
โYou guys really came through for us,โ Venkat said. โAnd weโre grateful!โ โNaturally.โ
โAnd hey, you guys get a seat on Ares 5. Everyone wins.โ โMmm.โ
Venkat looked at Zhu Tao sideways. โYou donโt seem too happy.โ
โI spent four years working onย Taiyang Shen,โ he said. โSo did countless other researchers, scientists, and engineers. Everyone poured their souls into construction while I waged a constant political battle to maintain funding.
โIn the end, we built a beautiful probe. The largest, sturdiest unmanned probe in history. And now itโs sitting in a warehouse. Itโll never fly. The State Council wonโt fund another booster like that.โ
He turned to Venkat. โIt could have been a lasting legacy of scientific research. Now itโs a delivery run. Weโll get a Chinese astronaut on Mars, but what science will he bring back that some other astronaut couldnโt have? This operation is a net loss for mankindโs knowledge.โ
โWell,โ Venkat said cautiously, โitโs a net gain for Mark Watney.โ โMmm,โ Zhu Tao said.
โขโขโข
โDISTANCE 61ย meters,ย velocity 2.3 meters per second,โ Johanssen said.
โNo problem,โ Martinez said, his eyes glued to his screens. One showed the camera feed from Docking Port A, the other a constant feed of the probeโs telemetry.
Lewis floated behind Johanssenโs and Martinezโs stations.
Beckโs voice came over the radio. โVisual contact.โ He stood in Airlock 3 (via magnetic boots), fully suited up with the outer door open. The bulky SAFER unit on his back would allow him free motion in space should the need arise. An attached tether led to a spool on the wall.
โVogel,โ Lewis said into her headset. โYou in position?โ
Vogel stood in the still-pressurized Airlock 2, suited up save his helmet. โJa, in position and ready,โ he replied. He was the emergency EVA if Beck needed rescue.
โAll right, Martinez,โ Lewis said. โBring it in.โ โAye, Commander.โ
โDistance 43 meters, velocity 2.3 meters per second,โ Johanssen called out. โAll stats nominal,โ Martinez reported.
โSlight rotation in the probe,โ Johanssen said. โRelative rotational velocity is
0.05 revolutions per second.โ
โAnything under 0.3 is fine,โ Martinez said. โThe capture system can deal with it.โ
โProbe is well within manual recovery range,โ Beck reported. โCopy,โ Lewis said.
โDistance 22 meters, velocity 2.3 meters per second,โ Johanssen said. โAngle is good.โ
โSlowing her down a little,โ Martinez said, sending instructions to the probe. โVelocity 1.8โฆ1.3โฆ,โ Johanssen reported. โ0.9โฆstable at 0.9 meters per
second.โ
โRange?โ Martinez asked.
โTwelve meters,โ Johanssen replied. โVelocity steady at 0.9 meters per second.โ
โAngle?โ
โAngle is good.โ
โThen weโre in line for auto-capture,โ Martinez said. โCome to Papa.โ
The probe drifted gently to the docking port. Its capture boom, a long metal triangle, entered the portโs funnel, scraping slightly along the edge. Once it reached the portโs retractor mechanism, the automated system clamped on to the boom and pulled it in, aligning and orienting the probe automatically. After several loud clanks echoed through the ship, the computer reported success.
โDocking complete,โ Martinez said. โSeal is tight,โ Johanssen said.
โBeck,โ Lewis said, โyour services wonโt be needed.โ โRoger that, Commander,โ Beck said. โClosing airlock.โ โVogel, return to interior,โ she ordered.
โCopy, Commander,โ he said.
โAirlock pressure to one hundred percent,โ Beck reported. โReentering ship.
โฆ Iโm back in.โ
โAlso inside,โ Vogel said.
Lewis pressed a button on her headset. โHoustโ erโฆJiuquan, probe docking complete. No complications.โ
Mitchโs voice came over the comm. โGlad to hear it,ย Hermes. Report status of all supplies once you get them aboard and inspected.โ
โRoger, Jiuquan,โ Lewis said.
Taking off her headset, she turned to Martinez and Johanssen. โUnload the probe and stow the supplies. Iโm going to help Beck and Vogel de-suit.โ
Martinez and Johanssen floated down the hall toward Docking Port A. โSo,โ he said, โwho would you have eaten first?โ
She glared at him.
โโCause I think Iโd be tastiest,โ he continued, flexing his arm. โLook at that.
Good solid muscle there.โ โYouโre not funny.โ
โIโm free-range, you know. Corn-fed.โ
She shook her head and accelerated down the hall.
โCome on! I thought you liked Mexican!โ โNot listening,โ she called back.
