โHow was the first day back?โ Harriet asked as soon as Elizabeth got home. โFine,โ Elizabeth lied. โMad,โ she said, bending over to sweep her daughter into her arms. โHow was school? Was it fun? Did you learn
something new?โ โNo.โ
โSure you did,โ she said. โTell me.โ
Madeline put her book down. โWell. Some of the kids are incontinent.โ โGood god,โ said Harriet.
โThey were probably just nervous,โ Elizabeth said, smoothing Madelineโs hair. โStarting something new can be difficult.โ
โAlso,โ Madeline said, โMrs. Mudford wants to see you.โ She held out a note.
โGood,โ Elizabeth said. โThatโs what proactive teachers do.โ โWhatโs proactive?โ Madeline asked.
โTrouble,โ muttered Harriet.
โ
Elizabeth made her way down to Personnel a few weeks later. โCan you give me information on that investor?โ Elizabeth asked Miss Frask. โAnything you have.โ
โWhy not,โ Frask said as she yanked a single slim file folder from accounting stampedย CONFIDENTIAL. โI gained two pounds last week.โ
โIs there more?โ Elizabeth asked, looking through the file. โThereโs nothing in here.โ
โYou know how rich people are, Zott. Private. But why donโt we have lunch next week. Itโll give me more time to root through the files.โ
But when the next week came, the only thing Frask brought was a sandwich.
โCouldnโt find a thing,โ Frask admitted. โWhich is strange given all the hoopla around his last visit. Probably means he decided to take his money elsewhere; happens all the time. By the way, howโs the lab tech job going? Suicidal yet?โ
โHow did you know about that?โ Elizabeth said as a vein on her temple began to throb.
โIโm in Personnel, remember? We know all, see all. Or in my case, knew all, saw all.โ
โWhat do you mean?โ
โNow Iโm the one whoโs been fired,โ Frask said matter-of-factly. โIโm out this Friday.โ
โWhat?ย Why?โ
โRemember my seven-point improvement plan? Lose twenty pounds? I gained seven.โ
โYou canโt be fired for gaining weight,โ Elizabeth said. โThatโs illegal.โ
Frask leaned over and squeezed Elizabethโs arm. โGosh, you know what? I never tire of your naรฏvetรฉ.โ
โIโm serious,โ Elizabeth said. โYou must fight it, Miss Frask. You canโt let them do this.โ
โWell,โ Frask said, turning serious, โas a personnel professional, I do always advocate a heart-to-heart with the boss. Point out oneโs accomplishments; focus on oneโs future impacts.โ
โThatโs it.โ
โIโm kidding,โ Frask said. โThat never works. Anyway, donโt worryโ Iโve already got a bunch of temp typing jobs lined up. But before I leave, I have a little present for you. Something to make up for all the grief I caused
after Mr. Evans died. Why donโt you meet me on Friday at the south elevator. Four oโclock. I promise you wonโt be disappointed.โ
โ
โJust down this hallway,โ Frask instructed when Friday afternoon arrived. โWatch where you walk. A bunch of mice escaped from the biology lab.โ Together she and Elizabeth took the elevator to the basement, then made their way down a long corridor until they reached a door markedย NO ADMITTANCE. โHere we are,โ Frask said cheerfully.
โWhat is this place?โ Elizabeth asked, staring at a row of small steel doors labeled with the numbers one to ninety-nine.
โStorage,โ said Frask, taking out a set of keys. โYou have a car, right? And a big empty trunk?โ She spun through the keys until she found number forty-one, inserted it in the lock, and invited Elizabeth to look inside.
Calvinโs work. Boxed and sealed.
โWe can use this dolly,โ Frask said, wheeling it over. โItโs eight boxes total. But we need to hurryโ I have to turn in these keys by five oโclock.โ
โIs this legal?โ
Miss Frask reached for the first box. โDo we care?โ
