Nico raised his hand to the bull-man. โMenoetes, meet Will, Screech-Bling and Hiss-Majesty. Everyone else, this is Menoetes.โโ
Menoetes grabbed his horns and started jumping up and down in excitement. โOh, the gods definitely answered my prayers today! Iโve been waiting ages for a demigod to show up, and now I actually get Nico di Angelo?โ
Willโs jaw dropped open. Nico reached over and gently shut it. The troglodytes, however, didnโt seem fazed at all.
โGreetings, Menoetes!โ said Screech-Bling proudly. โWe have not
actually met before, but I am Screech-Bling, the CEO of the troglodytes, at your โ SHRIEK โ service! And this is my comrade, Hiss-Majesty.โ
Hiss-Majesty bowed, doffing their cheese hat with great finesse.
โWow, four people who can help me?โ Menoetes clapped his beefy hands. โThis is the best day of my life.โ
โIโm so lost,โ said Will. โWho are you?โ
Menoetes flared his bovine nostrils. โMenoetes? No? Has Nico told you
nothing of me?โ
โIโve been โฆ kind of busy?โ said Nico sheepishly. โYou know, between finding my half-sister down here, and falling into Tartarus, and then all those pesky Roman emperors? You know, all that.โ
โYes, yes, I did hear such rumblings from Hades,โ Menoetes said. โBut surely you told your friend here about me at some point!โ
Will grimaced and shook his head.
โWell, I will try not to be mortally offended,โ said Menoetes. Then he offered his hand to Will. โI work for Nicoโs father. I tend to his cattle and
oversee the farm.โ
โTell me,โ said Will, taking Menoetesโs hand, โwhat is the farm for?โ Menoetes laughed. โOh, youโre silly. Surely you know โโ
Will shook his head again.
Menoetes glared at Nico. โDo you not tell him anything?โ โSometimes!โ Nico said. And then he thought, Sometimes Iโm afraid to
tell him more.
Menoetes grunted. โWell, let me make it easy for you โฆ uh โฆ Whatโs your name?โ
โWill. Will Solace.โ
Menoetes narrowed his eyes. โChild of Apollo?โ โYep.โ
โHmph. Donโt know what you are doing down here, Night Light.โ โHey!โ said Will, scowling.
Menoetes swept his hand to indicate the landscape behind him. โAll that you see exists so the Underworld can nourish its helpers and keep the machinery moving. There are many living beings who work for Hades,
either in the fields, or in the palace, or in Elysium. They must be fed. Did you think ambrosia and nectar come from nothing?โ
โOf course not,โ said Will. โI help manage the infirmary at Camp Half-Blood.โ
โIt doesnโt just exist,โ said Menoetes. โIt is grown. Iโm sure your satyrs or dryads up in Camp Half-Blood manage your fields and orchards.โ
โMenoetes has been working for my father since โฆ well, for a very, very long time,โ said Nico. โHeโs really good with the cattle.โ
The bull-man waved off the comment. โOh, stahp,โ he said, and then, in a lower voice, โBut itโs true. I can show you around if youโd like.โ
Nico squirmed. โMenoetes, itโs good to see you, but weโre on a quest, so
โโ
โNot a quest! How exciting! Well then, let me lay down the red carpet for
you!โ
Nico watched in discomfort as Menoetes sprawled on the ground. โGo ahead, O great demigods!โ he said.
โPlease donโt do that,โ said Nico. โDo you get it? Iโm a red carpet.โ โI got that.โ
โBecause Iโm red.โ
Nico sighed. โPlease stand up, Menoetes.โ
The bull-man did, then dusted himself off. โThe world doesnโt come to a standstill just because youโre demigods.โ
โNo one said it did!โ said Nico. โWe just need to pass through for โฆ uh
โฆโ He looked down at Screech-Bling. โFor the shortcut,โ said the troglodyte.
โThe shortcut?โ Menoetes snorted. โThe shortcut to where?โ
Before Nico could reply, Hiss-Majesty blurted out, โOh, theyโre going to Tartarus!โ The trogโs eyes glowed with admiration.
โTartarus?!โ Menoetes burst into laughter. He doubled over, clutching at his ripped abs. โOh, this is perfect. Thank you so much, my young troglodyte! Youโve given me exactly what I need!โ
โWhat does that mean?โ asked Will.
Menoetes snapped back to attention. โIt means I will absolutely tell
Hades that you two are traipsing around his realm without his knowledge. He wonโt be too thrilled about that, will he, Nico?โ
Nico could feel the sweat breaking out on his forehead. โDonโt do that, Menoetes. You canโt.โ
โI canโt?โ Menoetes shrugged. โI could call on him right now. Or even write him a letter.โ
โPlease! He canโt know โโ
โโDear Hades, how are you?โโ said Menoetes while he mimed writing. โโHope youโre doing swell. Your cows are lovely, and the nectar reserves
are overflowing this season. By the way, your son brought another demigod into your realm โ a child of Apollo, no less! โ and theyโre totally walking into Tartarus. Yes, thatโs right, the place you expressly forbade anyone else to enter. Love you! Signed, your faithful and loyal cattle driver, Menoetes.โโ
To cap off the performance, the bull demon pretended to fold up the letter, stuff it in an envelope and seal it with a kiss.
โAre you done?โ Nico asked.
โMaybe,โ Menoetes said. โDepends on what youโre willing to offer me
not to tell your father.โ
Nico tried not to groan. โWhat is it you want this time, Menoetes?โ โMe? Youโre asking me?โ He feigned surprise. โWell, thatโs so sweet of
you to think of my needs!โ
โThis demon is very dramatic,โ noted Screech-Bling.
โEvery day of every year of the last two thousand, seven hundred years!โ said Menoetes. โGet used to it!โ
Nico pressed his lips together. โOkay, letโs make the usual unfair trade: we complete some inane task for you; you let us pass without interference.โ
Menoetes giggled, which was a strange sound coming from a giant bull-headed man. โIsnโt that what heroes are for, Nico? Youโre always out there pointlessly retrieving items for some misguided moral goal. Why canโt I take advantage of it?โ
โWhat do you want?โ Nico said sharply.
โFruit,โ he said. โSpecifically, fruit from Persephoneโs garden.โ
Nicoโs heart dropped to the bottom of his stomach. โYou know thatโs not possible.โ
โAnd you know itโs not possible for you to enter Tartarus,โ said
Menoetes. โSo weโre at an impasse already. Wouldnโt you like to resolve this?โ
Screech-Bling folded his arms. โYou ask too much, bull-man farmer. The troglodytes would never visit Persephoneโs garden.โ
โNever,โ agreed Hiss-Majesty. โDespite how shiny it is.โ
Screech-Bling gazed dreamily into the distance. โYes. So very shiny โฆโ โHold on,โ said Will. โWould someone explain to me why this a big
deal?โ
โYes, Nico.โ Menoetesโs voice dripped with mock sweetness. โWhy donโt
you explain it?โ
Nico dug his fingernails into his palm. โMy stepmotherโs garden โฆ Thereโs no place like it in existence. Itโs beautiful. And, if Iโm being honest, itโs one of my favourite spots.โ
โIโm not hearing the problem,โ Will said. โIf you know it so well, why canโt we just visit and ask Persephone not to tell her husband?โ
โBecause sheโs not going to let me take anything from her garden! No one is allowed to do that. Itโs full of some of the rarest plants ever. There are bushes of diamonds, Will. Trees with flowering rubies. And Iโm pretty sure sheโll know the moment we take something, which means sheโll tell Hades immediately after that. Then weโre toast.โ
โYou donโt have many options,โ said Menoetes. โYou can take the chance and maybe not get caught. Or you can refuse to help me, and you will get
caught.โ
โWhy?โ said Nico. โWhy are you always asking things of others? Do you have a collection of stuff people have retrieved for you?โ
โNo!โ said Menoetes, and this time, his offence didnโt seem fake. โNo, itโs for โฆ Well, I like to share.โ
โShare?โ said Will. โWith whom?โ
โWith my boyfriend!โ he blurted out. โFine, I said it. Are you happy now?โ
Nico and Will looked at each other, shocked.
โOh, so you have a problem with a male demon being in a relationship with a male giant?โ Menoetes scraped the ground with his human foot, like he was going to charge them.
โWhat?โ said Nico. โNo! Itโs just โโ
โI expected better of you, I guess,โ said Menoetes. โIt seems so โโ โMenoetes, calm down,โ Nico interrupted. โIโm gay.โ
โAnd Iโm bisexual.โ Will pointed to Nico. โHeโs literally my boyfriend.โ โOh,โ said Menoetes. โWell โฆ sorry. I get a little defensive sometimes.โ โThatโs okay,โ said Will. โBut back up the Boyfriend Train a second. You
said โฆ a giant?โ
โYes,โ said Menoetes proudly, puffing up his chest. โAlthough heโs not a giant giant, mind you. Heโs more my size. His name is Geryon, and weโve been going steady for a while now.โ
Nico immediately started coughing so hard that Will pounded his palm on Nicoโs back.
โGERYON?!โ Nico demanded. โBlack hair? Tiny little moustache? Three bodies?โ
โThatโs him,โ said Menoetes dreamily. โYou know him?โ
โHe tied me and my friends up! He tried to kill Percy Jackson!โ โThat was his old life!โ claimed Menoetes. โEver since the Doors of
Death were closed โฆ well, heโs been different.โ
โDifferent how?โ demanded Nico. โBecause he was awful! He helped Kronos. All he cared about was money!โ
โAnd now he doesnโt,โ said Menoetes. โWhich is why I want to give him something nice. He doesnโt have anything any more. He lost his ranch business. He started re-evaluating his life, and Iโm so proud of his growth! If I can get him just one pretty thing โฆ Well, gift-giving is my love language,โ he said bashfully. โBut I never have a chance to find gifts. Iโm
always working here.โ
Will nodded. โThat โฆ actually sounds really sweet.โ
โSweet?โ Nico scoffed. โYou didnโt meet Geryon. You donโt know what heโs like.โ
โWas like,โ said Menoetes. โWas. Because now you donโt know what he is
like.โ
Nico was left speechless.
โMaybe we should give him a chance,โ said Will. โWe both know people who were once terrible and then turned things around. Like Ethan. Or Luke.โ
When he put it that way, Nico had to concede the point. And wasnโt that the whole purpose behind this quest, after all? They were rescuing someone who had dared to be different.
โFine,โ he said. โMenoetes, weโll find a way to get you that fruit, as long as you promise to let us pass afterwards.โ
Menoetes put his hand on his red chest. โI swear on the Styx.โ โThatโs good enough for me,โ said Will.
โMe, too,โ Nico decided.
A flurry of hissing and clicking passed between Screech-Bling and Hiss-Majesty.
โWe cannot go with you, demigods,โ Screech-Bling announced. โIt is too dangerous, even for brave troglodytes. If we were caught, our whole people might face the wrath of Hades!โ
โShiny though the garden may be โฆโ Hiss-Majesty added dreamily.
โI understand,โ Nico said. โYouโve done plenty already. Itโll be difficult enough for just two of us to sneak into the garden.โ
โWhich brings me to another question,โ Will said, his legs wobbling. โIsnโt Persephoneโs garden next to Hadesโs palace? Do we have to walk all the way back there?โ
โStop fretting and follow me,โ said Menoetes. โI have a solution.โ
The bull-man led the group down the hill, through pastures filled with black cattle that seemed utterly uninterested in them. Nico tried to dampen his racing thoughts, but he was drowning in worries about how to avoid his fatherโs detection โ and Persephoneโs.
As they passed through the orchards, Menoetes patted one of the
enormous, thick-trunked trees. โHave any of you ever had nectar straight from the source?โ
Will stared at one of the spirits, who was sticking a spigot into a trunk. โIs that what these ghosts are harvesting?โ
โTheyโre souls, first of all,โ said Menoetes. โSometimes souls in the Fields of Punishment want to work off the horrible things they did in the mortal world, so Hades allows them to come here. Which is perfect for me, since handling too much nectar at once is toxic.โ
โWow,โ said Nico. โI knew about your cattle, but I guess I never asked Father what else you did on this farm.โ
Will nodded. โHow did no one at Camp Half-Blood ever teach us about this?โ
โA lot of gods and demigods just take it for granted,โ said Menoetes. โNectar and ambrosia are so plentiful that most folks donโt ask where they come from.โ
โI think we should have a conversation with Chiron when we get back,โ said Will.
That warmed Nicoโs heart.
To their left, spirit workers were pulling ambrosia chunks from the ground like giant tubers and piling them in wheelbarrows. Menoetes waved at them as he brought the group to a hitching post where half a dozen
smoky jet-black donkeys were tied up.
โDonkeys?โ said Nico. โArenโt they pretty slow?โ Menoetes laughed. โYou could walk instead.โ
โDonkeys sound great,โ said Will quickly. โPlease, Nico.โ
Nico noticed the dark circles under Willโs eyes. He looked exhausted. It was the reminder he needed that he couldnโt ask too much of Will in a place like this. It wouldnโt be fair.
โDemonic donkeys it is,โ said Nico.
Menoetes threw saddles on two of the donkeys and then stepped aside. โThis is how we deliver ambrosia and nectar to the mortal world. As far as Iโm concerned, thereโs no better way to travel.โ
Will narrowed his eyes. โYou mean these things deliver all our nectar and ambrosia?โ
โNo,โ admitted the bull-demon. โLike I said before, Iโm pretty sure the dryads manage the grove at Camp Half-Blood. But there are many
customers who require it elsewhere, and this is where it comes from.โ
With a little help from Nico, Will climbed onto the back of a donkey, and then Nico leaped up onto his.
โIโm still not sure about this,โ he said. โMy father is โฆ well, heโs very perceptive. I donโt know how weโre going to avoid his notice.โ
โYouโre creative,โ said Menoetes. โYou know your father and the palace grounds.โ
โIf anyone can do this, itโs you,โ said Will. His eyes sparkled with that very Will-like sincerity that Nico loved. He was constantly amazed how powerful it felt to have someone by his side who believed in him.
Nico thought for a moment. โWeโll have to approach from the north.
Thereโs hardly ever any activity on that side of Erebos, so the walls arenโt well maintained. If we can find a break in the defences, we could ride right up to my fatherโs palace.โ
Menoetes nodded. โAn excellent idea.โ
โThen if we can sneak into the garden โฆ Hmmm. I have an idea for the perfect fruit.โ
โDonโt tell me!โ Menoetes cupped his hands over his ears. โIt must be a surprise!โ
Nico put up his palms. โOkay, okay!โ โWeโre just happy to help you,โ said Will.
Nico still wasnโt sure about that, but they had to do it if they were going to reach Tartarus before it was too late โ for Bob, but also for Will.
Menoetes laid his hands on the heads of the respective donkeys, then murmured something to them in ancient Greek. When he was done, he stepped aside.
โTheyโll bring you right back when youโre done.โ The bull-man turned and regarded the troglodytes. โAs for you, my small friends, you are
welcome to stay with me while you wait.โ
Screech-Blingโs eyes gleamed. โWe shall do so. We have much to learn from one another.โ
โPerhaps a trade could be arranged,โ Hiss-Majesty added. โThe lizards
and grubs in your farmlands, in exchange for โโ they touched their cheese-wedge hat โ โfashionable haberdashery?โ
Menoetes fluttered his long bull eyelashes. โOh, that would be amazing!โ
Before Nico could even process the idea of Menoetes wearing a stack of trog hats, their donkeys rocketed forward. Will let loose a scream of both terror and joy. As he clung to his donkeyโs neck, he repeated the same phrase over and over: โOHMYGODSOHMYGODSOHMYGODS.โ
And the two of them zipped over the land of the dead on the backs of demonic donkeys.
