Chapter no 111

Quantum Radio

Strong hands caught Ty, breaking his fall.

The quantum historian dragged him to a chair and propped him up. The person squatted down, their mirrored helmet close to Tyโ€™s face. He saw a warped reflection of himself, which fit this moment perfectly. He felt as though the video was like walking through a house of mirrors: seeing the world in a warped way and then finally striding out into the light and seeing the truthโ€”what had actually happened to his family.

As his senses returned to him, he managed to speak. โ€œYou lied.โ€

The computerized voice echoed in the cafeteria: โ€œAbout?โ€

โ€œYou said you never intervened in worlds. You only observed.โ€ โ€œThatโ€™s true.โ€

โ€œYou intervened in ours. In my life. In my family.โ€ โ€œWeย are not the ones who visited your father.โ€

Ty squinted. โ€œThe Covenant.โ€ โ€œNo.โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t understand.โ€

โ€œYou will.โ€ The historianโ€™s helmet focused on Ty, seeming to stare at him. โ€œDo you want to see the rest of the video?โ€

โ€œNo. But I need to. I need to know what happened. Play it.โ€

On the wall in the space station, the video of Gerhard Richter sitting in the chair began playing again.

โ€œI have refused this request. I will not desert my wife or my children. I do not care the cost. I will face the future with them or not at all.โ€

Richter paused. โ€œThey have told me that certain events in the near future will change my mind. I do not believe it. Nothing will change my mind. I grew up with only half of a family in a ruined world. My children wonโ€™t endure the same thing. I want something better for them.โ€

In the video, Richter stared straight ahead. โ€œIs that all?โ€ he asked.

โ€œDetails,โ€ the voice said.

Again, Ty tried to identify the person speaking, but couldnโ€™t.

Richter exhaled. โ€œVery well. This entire matter is bizarre beyond words, but I will indulge youโ€”on the off chance this becomes relevant to the future.โ€

He pinched his bottom lip, seeming deep in thought for a moment before resuming his speech.

โ€œAgain, what my visitors have told me is quite familiar to me: that my son, without a father figure in his life, will developโ€ฆ a certain hunger, a drive to prove himself. That quest will lead him to a discovery that has to do with subatomic particlesโ€”quantum technology. The role theyโ€™ve asked me to play, beyond deserting my family, is to make investments that might support that discovery. Itโ€™s absurd. They have urged me to partner with the American group previously mentionedโ€”the Advanced Research Projects Agency within the Department of Defenseโ€”to develop quantum technology. It all seems far-fetched to me. In fact, I had to ask what the word โ€˜quantumโ€™ meant. Itโ€™s a fancy way of saying very small. I hardly care. As with so many things, time will tell.โ€

Richter fell silent.

โ€œDetails,โ€ the voice said again.

Richter exhaled. โ€œMy visitors have informed me that my sonโ€™s discovery will result in the creation of a deviceโ€”one integral to humanityโ€™s future. I donโ€™t quite understand the details of what Iโ€™ve been told, but they insist that when the device is completed, itโ€™s imperative that he gain custody of itโ€” him and no one else. Iโ€™ve been told that I will have to help my son escape with it from a facility in the United States.โ€

Richter stared at the camera. โ€œIs that sufficient? Iโ€™m growing weary of this.โ€

The image on the wall faded.

Ty looked back at the four suited figures. โ€œWhereโ€™s the rest?โ€

โ€œThat is the entirety of the video.โ€ โ€œWhat happened?โ€

โ€œYou know what happened.โ€

โ€œHe said he wouldnโ€™t leave us. He did.โ€

โ€œThings happened after the video. Things that changed his mind.โ€ โ€œWhat things?โ€

โ€œThis is not the time.โ€ โ€œMake it the time.โ€

โ€œTime is a force of nature. None of us control it.โ€

Ty brought his fingers up to his temples and massaged them, willing his mind to work, to process what he had just learned.

โ€œWhatโ€™s happening here? I know itโ€™s more than youโ€™re telling me.โ€ โ€œWe are telling you all we can.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re not,โ€ Ty said.

The quantum historian was still, the mirrored helmet reflecting Tyโ€™s face. โ€œWorlds and time hang in the balance, Ty. This is the end of what we can tell you at this juncture. Now, we need your answer. Do you still accept our offer?โ€

โ€œTheyโ€™re still in,โ€ Ty said. โ€œAnd so am I.โ€

โ€œVery well,โ€ the historian said. โ€œIt will take us a few hours to treat Miss Santos. We will do so in the med bay. The rest of you may roam the station. I believe itโ€™s of interest to you.โ€

โ€œExtremely. But thereโ€™s one other thing I want. Itโ€™s sort of a strange request.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s the multiverse, Ty. Everything is strange, and anything is possible.โ€ โ€œOn our world, there was a movie made in the 1960s. Itโ€™s a World War II

film calledย The Guns of Navarone. Do you know it?โ€ โ€œWe are familiar withย The Guns of Navarone.โ€

โ€œWould it be possible for Nora and me to see that movie?โ€

There was the briefest of pauses, then the historian nodded once. โ€œIt will play on the far wall of the observation deck when you give the voice command โ€˜play movie.โ€™โ€

โ€œOne last thing,โ€ Ty said. โ€œKato wants to know why you wear the suits.โ€ โ€œKato will get his answer in time.โ€

Ty let his head fall back. โ€œI knew you were going to say that.โ€
