Chapter no 43

Quantum Radio

Ty was sitting at his desk, staring at the stained page from Katoโ€™s file, when someone knocked on the door. He folded the page and slipped it in his pocket just in time to hide it from the young marine who entered.

โ€œSir, youโ€™re wanted for another meeting.โ€

Five minutes later, Ty was walking into a conference room where Colonel Travis and Bishop were standing at the end of a long table. Tyโ€™s parents were sitting on one side.

The moment the door closed, Bishop said, โ€œTheyโ€™ve found the fourth match.โ€

He took a folder from Travis and slid it across to Tyโ€™s father, who opened it and placed it between him and Tyโ€™s mother so they could both read the summary page.

โ€œHer name is Maria Santos,โ€ Bishop continued. โ€œAge twenty-four. Sheโ€™s living in a homeless shelter in downtown Nashville. Sheโ€™s a junkieโ€”โ€

Tyโ€™s mother held up a hand. โ€œPlease donโ€™t say that.โ€ โ€œWhat? Homeless shelter?โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t think the word junk should be used to describe a human being.โ€

Bishop exhaled heavily. โ€œMiss Santos has a past history of substance abuse.โ€ The man eyed Helen, expression bordering on mocking. She glanced up, then returned her attention to the file, not taking the bait.

โ€œSheโ€™s apparently a singer. Or was. Her band had a few hits, then broke up. Some kind of disagreement or loversโ€™ quarrel or something.โ€ Bishop flipped a page. โ€œShe went solo and started having a lot of problems. Thatโ€™s about all we know. Oh, and she seems to have absolutely no connection to any of the other three matches. Or science. Weโ€™re scratching our heads on this one.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s not as mysterious as you might think,โ€ Richter said, still scanning the file.

โ€œWhat does that mean?โ€

โ€œIโ€™d like to speak with her first.โ€

When no one objected, Richter rose, and Helen looked up at him. โ€œYou donโ€™t want to finish reading the file?โ€

โ€œThere is no need. The pattern is clear. We need to see what she was working on.โ€ To Colonel Travis, he said, โ€œDo we have her cloud accounts? Have you downloaded the data there?โ€

โ€œShe doesnโ€™t have any.โ€ โ€œPhysical files?โ€

โ€œOnly a notebook.โ€

โ€œBring it to me. I want to read it before I see her.โ€ โ€œWhy?โ€ Ty asked.

โ€œI believe sheโ€™s an equally important component of this mystery.โ€ His gaze settled on Bishop. โ€œRegardless of her past.โ€

Bishop crossed his arms. โ€œDidnโ€™t realize you were such a music connoisseur, Gerhard.โ€

โ€œOn the contrary. Iโ€™ve been waiting my whole life for this particular piece.โ€

โ€œYou want to tell me what that means?โ€ โ€œNo.โ€

Bishop snorted. โ€œYou peopleโ€ฆ Look, somebody is going to have to start giving me some answers.โ€ He pointed at Ty. โ€œStarting with you. I got you the pardon. And the meeting with Tanaka. And Dr. Brown. Now talk. Whatโ€™s the code to operate the device?โ€

Ty felt every pair of eyes in the room focus on him. โ€œThe symbols on the dial are star clusters.โ€

Bishop shook his head, annoyed. โ€œNo. Theyโ€™re not. Weโ€™ve run the simulations. Theyโ€™re not from the past. Or the future. Or from any planet in the solar system. Weโ€™re even trying to model worlds in the habitable zones of the closest stars. Results are pending, but theyโ€™re telling me it doesnโ€™t look likely. So, what youโ€™re saying is just not correct.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m right,โ€ Ty said, voice rising. โ€œProve it.โ€

โ€œI canโ€™t.โ€

Bishop threw up his hands. โ€œWonderful.โ€

โ€œLook, I canโ€™t tell you how I know, but I just sense itโ€”like I knew the genomes were of living people and that the device was a small collider.โ€

โ€œThen whatโ€™s the code? How do we operate it?โ€ โ€œI donโ€™t know yet.โ€

โ€œSo you were lying when you said you would talk in return for the pardon.โ€

Ty felt blood rushing to his head, the beat of his heart faint but growing in his eardrums. โ€œI didnโ€™t lie. I told you I would help in return for that pardon. I am helping. Iโ€™m telling you what I know.โ€

โ€œYou better start knowing more, and fast. The device will be done in a few hours.โ€

โ€œI want to brief the team.โ€

Bishop squinted at him. โ€œWhat team?โ€ โ€œKato and Nora.โ€

โ€œKato and Nora?โ€ Bishop practically spat out. โ€œYouโ€™re not a team.โ€ โ€œWe are.โ€

โ€œNo. Youโ€™re not.ย A team is a group of people who work together toward some measurable outcome. You people are, simply put, not that. You donโ€™t work together. You have no goal. Look, we still donโ€™t even know what the device does. Or how youโ€™re connected to it.โ€

Ty laughed. โ€œThatโ€™s exactly my point.โ€

โ€œWell, youโ€™ll apparently have to make it for me.โ€

โ€œThe point is, we need to start working together, right now. Because we are a team. And I think weโ€™re the key to figuring out whatโ€™s happening here.โ€

In the meeting room, Ty stood when Nora entered. โ€œWhat happened?โ€

โ€œIโ€™ll tell you when Kato gets here.โ€

They didnโ€™t have to wait long. The Navy SEAL arrived a minute later, face placid, hand extended to Nora. โ€œMaโ€™am.โ€

โ€œNora, this is Kato Tanaka. Kato, this is Nora Brown. I thought you two should meet. And thereโ€™s something else. Theyโ€™ve found the fourth match. Her name is Maria Santos. Sheโ€™s a singer and a songwriter. Sheโ€™s had some difficulties in her life, but it sounds like she was trying to get over them.โ€
