Chapter no 43

To Sleep in a Sea of Stars

Falconi was hunched over the central display along with Sparrow. In the holo, a window displayed the feed from a skinsuit headcam of someone moving about on the outside of theย Wallfishโ€™s hull.

Hwa-jungโ€™s voice sounded through the comms: โ€œโ€”checking the welds. I promise. Five minutes, no more, Captain.โ€

โ€œNo more,โ€ he said. โ€œFalconi out.โ€ He touched a button, and the holo switched to a map of the system, with all the ships marked for easy viewing.

As Kira sank into the welcome relief of a padded crash chair, Sparrow glanced at her. The womanโ€™s eyes widened as she noticed what she hadnโ€™t before. โ€œShit, Kira. What happened to yourโ€”โ€

โ€œNot now,โ€ said Falconi. โ€œStorytime later.โ€

Sparrow bit back her questions, but Kira could feel the weight of her gaze.

The Jellies and the nightmares were still skirmishing near and around Nidus. But it was a confused fight. The three remaining ships that belonged to the friendly Jelliesโ€”including the one carrying Tschetterโ€”were taking potshots at both the nightmares and their own kind. Two Jelly vessels and one of the nightmares had taken off from the planet and were shooting at any and all. Kira suspected the Seeker was in control of them. Likewise, the rest of the nightmares were fighting everyone but themselves.

As one of the Jelliesโ€™ shipsโ€”fortunately, not a friendlyโ€”exploded in a nuclear flare, Sparrow winced. โ€œWhat a clusterfuck,โ€ she said.

At first Kira thought theย Wallfishย had been lucky enough to escape pursuit, but then she spotted the trajectories plotted from two of the nightmares: intercept courses. The long, angular ships (they looked like bundles of enormous femurs bound together with strips of exposed muscle) were on the opposite side of the planet, but they were accelerating at the same insane, cell-destroying gโ€™s the other nightmares had employed. At the current rate, theyโ€™d be in range within fourteen minutes.

Or maybe not.

Approaching from the near asteroid belt was theย Darmstadt,ย trailing threads of coolant from its damaged radiators. Kira checked the numbers; the cruiser would just barely cross paths with the nightmares before they

shot past. If the nightmares piled on another quarter g of thrust, the UMC would be far too slow.

The comms crackled, and Akaweโ€™s voice sounded: โ€œCaptain Falconi, do you read?โ€

โ€œI read.โ€

โ€œWe can buy you some time here, I think. Maybe enough for you to get to the Markov Limit.โ€

Falconi gripped the edge of the table, the tips of his fingers turning white from the force. โ€œWhat about you, Captain?โ€

A chuckle from Akawe surprised Kira. โ€œWeโ€™ll follow if we can, but all that matters is that someone lets Command know about the offer from Tschetterโ€™s Jellies, and right now theย Wallfishย has the best shot of escaping the system. I know youโ€™re a civvy, Falconiโ€”I canโ€™t order you to do jack shitโ€”but it doesnโ€™t get more important than this.โ€

โ€œWeโ€™ll get the message back to the League,โ€ said Falconi. Then, after a momentโ€™s pause, โ€œYou have my word, Captain.โ€

A crackle of static and then: โ€œIโ€™ll hold you to that, Captain.โ€ฆ Stand by for a light show. Over.โ€

โ€œWhat are they planning?โ€ said Kira. โ€œThey canโ€™t outmaneuver the nightmares.โ€

Sparrow wet her lips, her gaze fixed on the holo. โ€œNo. But maybe Akawe can hit them hard and fast enough to take them off our tail. Depends on how many missiles theย Darmstadtย has left.โ€

Kira and the others were still sitting, waiting and watching, when Hwa-jung lumbered in through the doorway. Falconi gave her a nod. โ€œProblem fixed?โ€

Hwa-jung surprised Kira by bowing past parallel. โ€œIt was my fault. The repair I made in Sixty-One Cygni, I made in anger. The work was bad. I am sorry. You should find a better machine boss to work for you.โ€

Falconi walked over, put his hands on Hwa-jungโ€™s shoulders, and raised her back into a standing position. โ€œNonsense,โ€ he said, voice unexpectedly gentle. โ€œJust donโ€™t let it happen again.โ€

After a moment, Hwa-jung ducked her head. Tears filled her eyes. โ€œI will not. I promise.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s all I ask,โ€ said Falconi. โ€œAnd ifโ€”โ€

โ€œShit,โ€ said Sparrow in a subdued tone, pointing at the holo.

The nightmares had increased their thrust. Theย Darmstadtย was going to fall short by a good margin. Certainly more than the effective range of the cruiserโ€™s main lasers.

โ€œNow what?โ€ Kira asked. She felt numb from the rolling series of catastrophes. What else could go wrong at this point? Didnโ€™t matter.ย Just deal with it.ย If the nightmares docked with theย Wallfish,ย she might be able to fight off some of the invaders, but if there were more creatures like the one that had grabbed her on the Jelly ship, then she would be lost. They would all be lost.

โ€œWe set up a killing zone in the main shaft,โ€ said Falconi. โ€œFunnel the nightmares into there and hit โ€™em from every side.โ€

โ€œAssuming they donโ€™t just blow us up,โ€ said Sparrow.

โ€œNo,โ€ said Hwa-jung, motioning toward Kira. โ€œThey want her.โ€ โ€œThey do,โ€ Falconi agreed. โ€œWe can use that to our advantage.โ€ โ€œBait,โ€ said Kira.

โ€œExactly.โ€ โ€œThenโ€”โ€

A bloom of dazzling white in the center of the holo interrupted her and caused them all to stop and stare.

Both nightmare ships had exploded, leaving nothing but an expanding cloud of vapor.

โ€œGregorovich,โ€ said Falconi. โ€œWhat just happened?โ€ The ship mind said, โ€œCasaba-Howitzers. Three of them.โ€

The image in the holo ran in reverse, and they saw the explosions collapse back into the nightmaresโ€™ ships andโ€”just beforeโ€”three needles of light flickering in a scattered line some tens of thousands of klicks away.

โ€œHow?โ€ said Kira, confused. โ€œTheย Darmstadtย isnโ€™t in range.โ€

Sparrow seemed about to answer when the comm line crackled again and Akawe came on. โ€œThereโ€™s the light show, folks,โ€ he said, sounding grimly amused. โ€œWe dropped a few RD Fifty-Twos on approach to Nidus. Something new weโ€™ve been playing with. Hydrogen-cooled Casaba-Howitzers. Makes โ€™em nearly impossible to spot. In a pinch, they work pretty well as mines. We just had to force the nightmares into range. Stupid fucks didnโ€™t even realize they were flying into a trap. Weโ€™re changing course now. Going to do our best to keep the rest of these hostiles off your backs. Just keep up your burn and donโ€™t stop for anything. Over.โ€

โ€œRoger that,โ€ said Falconi. โ€œโ€ฆ And thank you, Captain. We owe you one. Over.โ€

โ€œThereโ€™ll be drinks to go around when this is done, Captain. Over,โ€ said Akawe.

As the line went dead, Sparrow said, โ€œIโ€™d heard about the RD Fifty-Twos. Never got to play with them, though.โ€

Falconi leaned back from the holo. He ran his hands through his bristly hair, scrubbing at his scalp with the tips of his fingers, and then said, โ€œOkay. Weโ€™ve got some breathing room. Not much, but a little.โ€

โ€œHow long until we can jump out?โ€ Kira asked.

โ€œAt our current two gโ€™s of thrust,โ€ whispered Gregorovich, โ€œwe shall gain the freedom to depart this hallowed graveyard in exactly twenty-five hours.โ€

Thatโ€™s too long.ย Kira didnโ€™t have to say it; she could see the others were thinking it as well. The nightmares and the Jellies had only taken a few hours to reach Nidus after dropping out of FTL. If more of them decided to pursue theย Wallfish,ย theyโ€™d have no trouble overtaking it.

โ€œGregorovich,โ€ said Falconi, โ€œany chance of a solar flare?โ€

Smart.ย Like all red dwarfs, Bughunt would be prone to high variability, which meant enormous and unpredictable solar flares. A large enough outburst would disrupt the magnetic fields used in the exhaust nozzles of their fusion drives and keep the Jellies or the nightmares from overtaking theย Wallfish.ย Assuming they hadnโ€™t found an effective way to shield themselves.

โ€œNone at the moment,โ€ said Gregorovich. โ€œDammit,โ€ Falconi muttered.

โ€œWeโ€™ll just have to hope Akawe and Tschetterโ€™s Jellies can keep everyone off our tail,โ€ said Sparrow.

Falconi looked like heโ€™d just bitten down on a rock. โ€œI donโ€™t like it. Iย reallyย donโ€™t like it. If even one of those assholes comes after us, weโ€™re going to be in a world of trouble.โ€

Sparrow shrugged. โ€œNot sure what we can do about it, Captain. The

Wallfishย ainโ€™t like a horse. She wonโ€™t go any faster if you hit her.โ€

A thought occurred to Kira: the malformed corruption that was the nightmares had been able to make use of the Jelly tech, so โ€ฆ why couldnโ€™t they?

The idea was so outlandish, she nearly dismissed it. Only because of the desperate nature of their circumstances did she say, โ€œWhat about the Jelly, Itari?โ€

โ€œWhat about it?โ€ said Falconi. โ€œMaybe it could help us.โ€

Hwa-jungโ€™s eyes narrowed, and she sounded outright hostile as she said, โ€œHow do you mean?โ€

โ€œIโ€™m not sure,โ€ said Kira. โ€œBut maybe it can tweak our Markov Drive so we can jump to FTL sooner.โ€

Hwa-jung cursed. โ€œYou want to let thatย thingย tinker with theย Wallfish?

Gah!โ€

โ€œItโ€™s worth a try,โ€ said Sparrow, looking at Falconi.

He grimaced. โ€œCanโ€™t say I like it, but if the Jelly can help us, we have to give it a shot.โ€

Hwa-jung looked profoundly unhappy. โ€œNo, no, no,โ€ she muttered. Then, louder: โ€œYou do not know what it could do. It could break every system in the ship. It could blow us up. No! The Jelly doesnโ€™t know our computers or ourโ€”โ€

โ€œSo youโ€™ll help it,โ€ Falconi said in a gentle tone. โ€œWeโ€™re dead if we canโ€™t get out of this system, Hwa-jung. Anything that can help us is worth trying at this point.โ€

The machine boss scowled and rubbed her hands together again and again. Then she grunted and got back to her feet. โ€œOkay. But if the Jelly does anything to hurt theย Wallfish,ย I will tear it apart.โ€

Falconi smiled slightly. โ€œIโ€™d expect nothing less. Gregorovich, you keep an eye on things also.โ€

โ€œAlways,โ€ whispered the ship mind.

Then Falconi shifted his gaze. โ€œKira, youโ€™re the only one who can talk with the Jelly. Go see if it thinks it can help, and if itย can,ย then coordinate between it and Hwa-jung.โ€

Kira nodded and pushed herself out of the crash chair, feeling every one of the added kilos from their burn.

The captain was still talking: โ€œSparrow, you too. Make sure things donโ€™t get out of hand.โ€

โ€œYessir.โ€

โ€œWhen youโ€™re done, take the Jelly back to the airlock.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re going to leave it there?โ€ Sparrow asked.

โ€œSeems like the only semi-secure place for it. Unless you have a better idea?โ€

Sparrow shook her head.

โ€œRight. Then get to it. And Kira? When youโ€™re finished, go see the doc and have him look at that arm of yours.โ€

โ€œWill do,โ€ said Kira.
