Chapter 27

Releasing 10 (Boys of Tommen, #6)

NOVEMBER 1, 1994

WHENย Iย ARRIVED HOME THE DAY AFTERย HUGHโ€™S PARTY, MY SISTER WAS THE ONE TOย greet me at the door. My dad was still at the hospital with my mam, and even though I was really worried about her, I couldnโ€™t stop smiling.

Because Iโ€™d had the best day of my life yesterday. This morning, too. With myย friends. I didnโ€™t want to go home, but I knew I couldnโ€™t stay at their house forever. I would miss my mother too much. But now that she wasnโ€™t here, I just felt lonely again.

Still, knowing I now had five friends of my own helped keep the smile on my face.

Hugh.

Claire.

Gibsie.

Shannon.

Patrick.

Andย me.

โ€œMeds,โ€ Caoimhe reminded me the moment the front door closed. โ€œRight now, missy.โ€ Catching me by the hand, she led me to the kitchen, where she rummaged in one of the cabinets for the pill bottle with my name on it. There were lots of them. โ€œHere we are,โ€ she mused, popping open the cap and handing me a pill. โ€œYou know what to do.โ€

Sighing heavily, I walked over to the sink and retrieved a glass from the draining board. Filling the glass with tap water, I chugged back the medicine and then opened my mouth for my sisterโ€™s inspection.

โ€œGood girl,โ€ she said approvingly before giving me a hug. โ€œNow, tell me about your sleepover.โ€

โ€œI had the best time ever,โ€ I told her, feeling excited all over again. โ€œAnd I made new friends. I have five now, Caoimhe. Five friends! Claire, Shannon, Patrick, Gibsie, and Hugh!โ€

โ€œGo on.โ€ Lowering herself down on a chair at the kitchen table, she rested her chin in her hand and smiled. โ€œGive me all the juicy details.โ€

โ€œWe had the party, and then we did the trick-or-treating and watchedย Hocus Pocus, and we had a midnight snack, and weโ€ฆโ€ I stopped myself just in time and skipped over the egging part. โ€œStayed up super late, and then Sinead made us pancakes for breakfast.โ€ Flopping onto the chair next to her, I sighed happily. โ€œI think I love him.โ€

โ€œWhich one?โ€

โ€œHugh,โ€ I sighed, clutching my chest. โ€œHeโ€™s so nice, Caoimhe. Like so, so nice, and heโ€™s pretty, and he holds the door for me, and he gave me an extra pillow from his room, and he cut my pancake when I couldnโ€™t do it.โ€ I heaved out another sigh, missing him already. โ€œHeโ€™s just soย sweet.โ€

My sister laughed. โ€œSo the crush is in full force.โ€

โ€œHowโ€™s Mam?โ€ I asked then. โ€œIs she coming home soon?โ€

โ€œDad called and said sheโ€™ll be home in a day or two,โ€ she told me. โ€œSheโ€™s feeling much better.โ€

I sagged in relief. โ€œThank God.โ€

โ€œI know,โ€ she replied, giving my hand a squeeze. โ€œNow, how do you feel about throwing on a scary movie in the sitting room and sharing your trick-or-treating haul with your big sister?โ€

Later that night, when I was tucked up in bed, I heard the familiar sound of my bedroom door opening inward, and I looked up from my storybook to see Mark in my doorway.

โ€œHey, munchkin,โ€ he said, closing and locking the door behind him. My stomach sank. โ€œWhat are you doing up so late?โ€

โ€œReading.โ€ A wave of panic swept over me, and I felt my body stiffen when he walked toward me. โ€œWhy are you here?โ€

โ€œI came over to keep your sister company,โ€ he explained, coming to sit on the side of my bed. โ€œShe fell asleep on the couch, so I thought Iโ€™d come and check on you.โ€

He was always checking on me.

It used to be okay, but I wasnโ€™t so sure anymore.

I didnโ€™t think I wanted him to keep checking on me.

I didnโ€™t want him to fix me again.

Not ever again.

โ€œIs my daddy home yet?โ€

โ€œNope.โ€ He smiled and tucked my hair behind my ear. โ€œItโ€™s just us, munchkin.โ€

โ€œWhen isย yourย daddy picking you up?โ€

โ€œIโ€™m sleeping over tonight,โ€ he explained, hand resting on my shoulder. โ€œYour dadโ€™s staying at the hospital with your mam, so theyโ€™re none the wiser.โ€

โ€œOh.โ€ My panic grew. โ€œOkay.โ€

โ€œSo your sister told me something today and Iโ€™m not happy about it.โ€

โ€œWhat?โ€

โ€œCaoimhe said you slept at a boyโ€™s house last night.โ€

โ€œHugh.โ€ I felt myself smile. โ€œHeโ€™s really nice.โ€

โ€œHmm.โ€ Mark didnโ€™t look happy. โ€œI donโ€™t know how I feel about you cheating on me, munchkin.โ€

โ€œWhat do you mean?โ€ I asked, confused.

โ€œI donโ€™t want to share you.โ€

A shiver racked through me. โ€œShare me?โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re my special girl, remember?โ€ He placed his big hand on my leg. โ€œAnd I donโ€™t want you being anyone elseโ€™s special girl.โ€

My face grew warm.

โ€œYouโ€™re blushing.โ€ He leaned in again, closer this time, and whispered, โ€œI like it when you blush for me.โ€

I wasnโ€™t blushing; I was frightened. But if I told him, he would get cross with me, and it always hurt extra bad when he was cross. It was better to not make him angry. I shivered, feeling strange in my belly again.

โ€œYou know what I think, munchkin?โ€ He walked his fingers up my leg. โ€œI think you need some of my special medicine again.โ€ His eyes trailed over me. โ€œYou donโ€™t want to end up like your mother, do you?โ€ He slid his hand under my nightdress. โ€œSick and rotting in a hospital bed?โ€

I shook my head, feeling sad. โ€œBut it hurts.โ€

โ€œOnly for a little while,โ€ he coaxed, wrapping his big hand around my throat. โ€œYou can handle it.โ€ He pushed me onto my back and dragged my nightie up to my waist. โ€œLike the other times.โ€

Shivering, I clenched my eyes shut and thought happy thoughts.

I thought ofย Hugh.
