OCTOBER 31, 1994
Iย WAS SO HAPPY THATย Iย THOUGHTย Iย MIGHT EXPLODE INTO A HUNDRED MILLIONย pieces. I had been waiting for Halloween to arrive ever since Friday, and it was finallyย here.ย Excitement bubbled inside of my belly, making it difficult to sit still for my sister.
โYouโre like my own personal doll,โ Caoimhe said from her perch behind me, where she was fixing my hair for the party.
โMy hair is getting long,โ I noted, looking at our reflections in her vanity mirror.
โMm-hmm,โ she agreed, flicking her waist-long, blond braid over her shoulder. โAlmost as long as mine.โ
โAlmost.โ
โWhat time is Claireโs mam picking you up?โ
โHalf past two.โ A shiver of excitement rolled through me. โWhat time is it now?โ
โAlmost two,โ my sister replied. โYou know, you donโt have to bring the invitation with you, Liz.โ
โI know. I justโฆlike it.โ Still clutching the invitation in my hands, I read it out loud for the hundredth time. โTo Lizzie, you areโโ
โInvited.โ
โI know how to read, Caoimhe,โ I grumbled before quickly carrying on, โto my seventh birthday partyโโ
โAt two oโclock, on the thirty-first of October.โ
โHey,โ I snapped, covering the invitation with my hand so she couldnโt see it. โI said I can read it myself.โ
Huffing out a breath, I retrained my focus on the invitation.
โFrom Huge,โ I said slowly, concentrating on saying it right. โFrom Huโฆgeโฆโ A laugh escaped my sister, and I narrowed my eyes in challenge. โItโs a hard name, okay!โ
โYes, it is,โ she agreed, trying to smother her laughter. โAnd itโs Hugh, just so you know. Notย Huge.โ
โI knew that,โ I grumbled, fingers trailing over the handwritten invitation. โHugh. I like his name.โ A small smile grew across my face. โI like his handwriting, too. Heโs neat.โ
โHeย isย neat,โ she agreed, leaning over my shoulder to inspect the invitation.
โIโm neat, too,โ I offered. โNot as neat as him, though.โ
โYeah, well, youโre only six. Heโs seven.โ
โIโll be seven in June.โ
โSo? Itโs not a competition.โ
โHe does joint writing.โ I held the invitation up to her face for a closer look. โLook at how good hisย gย is.โ I pointed to the perfectly curved letter. โItโs the bestย gย Iโve ever seen.โ I glanced up and caught her eye in the mirror. โYou have to show me how to do it.โ
โOh my God, Liz, chill.โ Setting the hairbrush down, my sister retrieved a bottle of perfume from the vanity and squirted it on my hair. โYou donโt need to learn everything right now. Just turn your mind off and enjoy being a kid.โ
โBut I canโt turn my mind off,โ I protested. โIt never stops talking to me.โ
โNo.โย Smoothing my hair, she gave me a warning look. โYouย donโtย say things like that.โ
Swallowing down my words, I nodded my head in understanding.
I knew what that look meant.
It was the same one Dad gave me.
Shut my mouth and keep it in my head.
โSee how much we get along when youโre not being crazy?โ Caoimhe offered then, fixing my outfit. โI swear, this past year has been the best since you were born.โ She smiled at me in the mirror. โHonestly, youโre like a different person since they changed your meds.โ
โI got in trouble at school last week,โ I reminded her. โI bit a boy in my class.โ
โOkay,ย asideย from that,โ she chuckled. โOverall, youโve been kicking ass.โ
I smiled proudly.
I liked it when Caoimhe was happy with me.
I wanted everyone to be happy with me.
โI hate my new doctor,โ I replied, grimacing at the thought of the lady with the bright-pink lipstick. โShe keeps asking me questions.โ
โYeah, well, if you donโt want to answer them, just lie.โ
โLie?โ
She nodded. โTell her what she wants to hear.โ
โBut Iโm not supposed to tell lies.โ
โWhite lies are fine.โ She grinned. โI tell white lies all the time.โ
โYou do?โ
She nodded. โYup.โ
โAbout what?โ
โAbout my age when I want to do things that Iโm too young for.โ She grinned again. โAnd myโฆโ A sad look came over her then and she sighed. โAbout lots of things.โ
โDo you tell me lies?โ
โOnly to keep you safe.โ
I frowned. โHuh?โ
โIt doesnโt matter.โ She ruffled my hair again. โI am proud of you, you know. Youโre talking like a normal human being and not freaking out every ten seconds. Youโve finally started primary school, made yourself a couple of little buddies, and youโve even managed to snag yourself a party invite.โ She winked. โMaybe thereโs hope for you yet.โ
โHeโs really pretty,โ I sighed, feeling my mind drift back to Claireโs brother. โHeโs got brown eyes and heโs tall, and he smells like soap and strawberries, and he doesnโt look like a troll at all.โ
โAw,โ Caoimhe gushed, pressing her hand to her chest. โYou like him, donโt you?โ
โYep.โ I pointed to my clothes then and asked, โAre you sure this is the right costume?โ
โOh yeah,โ Caoimhe confirmed, perching sunglasses on my head like a hairband. โYou lookย amazing, Liz.โ
Mammy was supposed to help me get ready, but she had to go to the hospital last night. For another sleepover. Daddy went to visit her this morning and left Caoimhe in charge.
โWhenโs she coming home?โ
โWho?โ
โMam.โ
โSoon.โ
โToday?โ
My sister shook her head. โJust soon, Liz.โ
โIโm not stupid, Caoimhe,โ I growled, feeling my body heat up. โI know somethingโs happening to Mam,โ I choked out, balling my hands into fists at my sides. โI justโฆI donโt understand.โ
โBe glad you donโt, Liz.โ Sighing heavily, she wrapped her arms around me from behind and hugged me tightly. โListen, when youโre old enough to understand, Iโll explain everything to you, but until then, just enjoy being a kid.โ
I canโt, I wanted to scream.ย Iโm too scared.
โItโs bad, isnโt it?โ I pushed, stomach sinking. โMammyโs really sick this time, isnโt she?โ
โShe was sick last time, too, and she got better,โ my sister replied in a tight voice. โMamโs a fighter. Sheโll beat it again.โ
โWhy does it keep happening to her?โ
โI donโt know.โ
โBut it keeps coming back, Caoimhe.โ
โYeah, Liz, Iย know.โ
โIs she going to die?โ
Caoimhe sighed heavily again. โNope, enough of the heavy for one day.โ Releasing me from her bear hug, Caoimhe straightened up and blew out a shaky breath. โToday is a good day, busy Lizzie bee.โ Plastering on a wide smile, she walked over to her boom box and grabbed a cassette from her impressive stack of music. โItโs Halloween. Youโre going to your first birthday party, where there will be countless hours of fun and dancing. Meanwhile, Iโm spending the day with my boyfriend, thereforeโฆโ Pausing, she switched up tapes and fiddled with the buttons on the deck until the sound of โTwist and Shoutโ from Chaka Demus & Pliers blasted from the speakers. โI feel a little pre-dance celebration is in order.โ
โOh my God.โ Unable to stop myself, I snickered into my hand when Caoimhe chicken danced toward me. โYou are so strange.โ
โOh,ย Iโmย strange?โ Laughing, she grabbed my hand and danced me across the room. โTalk about the pot calling the kettle black, Baby Sister.โ
Unable to resist the temptation of dancing with Caoimhe, I pushed my scary feelings deep down inside and replaced them with a bright smile. One just like hers.
The sound of our doorbell ringing a moment later caused my sister to scream. โOh my God. Itโs him!โ Squealing with excitement, she dropped my hands and dove for her vanityย table. โHeโs early!โ Swiping up her favorite brown lipstick, she carefully drew on her lips before patting them together. Turning back to look at me, she fluffed out her hair. โWell?โ she asked, pouting her lips and striking a pose. โHow do I look?โ
Caoimhe was wearing a loose, strappy, plaid-green dress that stopped way above her knees, her favorite Dr. Martens, and arms full of bangles. Her hair was half-up, half-down, with parts of it crimped.
โYou look like a grown-up,โ I replied, feeling jealous because my hair was straight and boring.
The doorbell rang again, and my sister burst into action. โOh my God, I better go and let him inside,โ she said, rushing toward me with her pinky finger extended. โOkay, you promise to not tell on me?โ
I hooked my finger around hers. โI promise.โ
โDad would kill me if they knew I brought Mark over when theyโre not home, so you canโt say anything.โ She chewed on her lip. โSeriously, you canโt tell, Liz.โ
โI wonโt.โ
โBecause you know how pissed they got when I brought Dar over when they were out.โ She snickered. โDad was so pissed when they got home, and he found us in my room.โ
โI miss Darren,โ I replied, thinking about Shannonโs big brother. The one who looked just like her. โHe was nice.โ
โYeah, I miss Dar, too,โ she agreed. โWeโve drifted since starting secondary school, but heโll always be one of my best friends.โ
โHow come you drifted?โ
โHe goes to BCS now,โ she explained. โAnd he canโt standโฆwell, letโs just say heโs not the biggest fan of the friends Iโve made at Tommen.โ
โHow come he was never your boyfriend?โ I shrugged. โYou knew him first.โ
โI used to want him to be.โ She clasped her hands together and sighed. โBut it didnโt happen that way.โ She smiled brightly then. โBut Markย isย my boyfriend, and heโs superfine, and super-sexy, and Iโll be super-dead if Dad finds out he was here when Iโm babysitting you, so you canโt tell.โ She gave me a worried look. โI mean it, Liz. Youย haveย to keep your mouth shut.โ
โI know, I know.โ I rolled my eyes and grumbled, โI can keep a secret, Caoimhe.โ
I always did.
