Chapter 10

Releasing 10 (Boys of Tommen, #6)

CURLING UP IN A BALL ON THE COUCH IN THE SITTING ROOM, Iย COVERED MY EARS ANDย tried to block out the shouting, but I could still hear them.

โ€œItโ€™s for the best, Catherine,โ€ Daddy shouted from the kitchen. โ€œTrust me, Iโ€™ve been through this before.โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t care,โ€ Mam argued back. โ€œI am not medicating that child another day.โ€

โ€œShe needs the medication.โ€

โ€œShe needs a childhood!โ€ Mam cried. โ€œSheโ€™s our baby, our child, and I refuse to continue this farce.โ€

โ€œYou want to talk about farces, Catherine? Really?โ€

โ€œShe is not taking another pill. Do you hear me? It stops right now.โ€

โ€œAnd when she acts out again? What then?โ€

โ€œWeโ€™ll handle it.โ€

โ€œI wonโ€™t move Caoimhe again,โ€ he warned. โ€œItโ€™s not fair on our other daughter. You do remember her, donโ€™t you?โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s not fair, and you know it.โ€

โ€œNo, whatโ€™s not fair is living my whole life the way I have and having to repeat the cycle all over again.โ€

โ€œWhat were we supposed to do?โ€

โ€œWell, I know what you should have done!โ€ he roared. โ€œYou should have fuckingโ€”โ€

โ€œOh my God, stop! I can hear you from upstairs.โ€ That was Caoimhe. โ€œWhatโ€™s wrong?โ€

โ€œYour mother thinks itโ€™s a good idea to take your sister off her meds.โ€

โ€œAre you insane?โ€ That was Caoimhe. โ€œMam, she has to take them.โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t start.โ€

โ€œShe is an actual human when sheโ€™s on them, Mam. Take her off them and sheโ€™ll go right back to being a feral monster.โ€

โ€œCaoimhe!โ€

โ€œIโ€™m sorry, but itโ€™s true. Dadโ€™s right. She needs to be on those tablets. The doctors said it themselves. Multiple doctors, Mam. Multiple times.โ€

โ€œMaybe weโ€™re not looking at this the right way,โ€ Dad added. โ€œMaybe a residential school would be her best fit.โ€

โ€œI am not sending her away.โ€

โ€œNot permanently.โ€

โ€œNo way. Itโ€™s not happening!โ€

Scrambling to my feet, I bolted upstairs to my bedroom as fast as I could. I quietly closed the door and sank down on the floor, hand still gripping the circular knob.

I had to make my family love me.

If I didnโ€™t, they were going to send me away.

โ€œStop fighting it,โ€ย a voice in my head commanded, and I flinched when the watery image of a womanโ€™s face flashed before my eyes.ย โ€œJust give in. Itโ€™ll all be better then.โ€

Oh no.

The voice was back.

The scary voice.

The one that made me wet the bed.

The one that made me fight.

Clamping my hands over my ears, I hummed loudly to drown it out.

I had to make the voice go away.
