Chapter 8

Releasing 10 (Boys of Tommen, #6)

โ€œSHE RUINED MY LIFE!โ€ CAOIMHE SCREAMED. โ€œIย CAN NEVER SHOW MY FACE AT SCHOOLย again.โ€

โ€œCaoimhe!โ€

โ€œEveryone is talking about me.โ€

โ€œNo, theyโ€™re not.โ€

โ€œYeah, they are, Mam, and itโ€™s all her fault.โ€

โ€œCaoimhe, please.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m not going to school tomorrow if sheโ€™s there.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re in sixth class, Caoimhe. Your sister is in junior infants. Youโ€™re on opposite sides of the school.โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t care! Iโ€™m not going if sheโ€™s there.โ€

โ€œOh yes you are.โ€

โ€œShe shouldnโ€™t even be at my school because thereโ€™s something fucked-up wrong with her!โ€ Throwing her schoolbag on the floor, she turned to glare at me. โ€œWhy did you have to come to my school?โ€ Releasing a furious scream, she looked at our parents. โ€œWhy couldnโ€™t you have sent her somewhere else?โ€

โ€œCaoimhe, you need to settle down,โ€ Mam said, moving to stand between us. โ€œSheโ€™s only four, sweetheart, and sheโ€™s come leaps and bounds this year. Donโ€™t be angry with her.โ€

โ€œAngry with her?โ€ Caoimheโ€™s eyes bulged. โ€œI fucking hate her, Mam!โ€

โ€œCaoimhe!โ€

โ€œSheโ€™s a fucking lunatic, Mam.โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t you dare call your sister that word.โ€

โ€œWhy not? Itโ€™s the truth. Half the time sheโ€™s a mute, and the other half, sheโ€™s screaming her head off and attacking anyone who gets near her.โ€ My sister threw her hands up and screamed. โ€œShe attacked another child in her classroom, for fuckโ€™s sake. My friendโ€™s baby brother! She drew blood. You canโ€™t honestly think thatโ€™s normal behavior.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s enough!โ€ That was Daddy. He walked over and wrapped his arm around Mammyโ€™s shoulder. โ€œDonโ€™t raise your voice to your mother. You know sheโ€™s not well.โ€

โ€œYeah, from another plague she brought into our lives,โ€ Caoimhe spat. โ€œFirst Lizzie and now cancer!โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t you dare say that about your mother!โ€ Daddy roared. He led Mammy over to her armchair and helped her sit down before turning back to Caoimhe.

Meanwhile, I made a beeline for my mother, feeling scared and cross and worried all at once. Climbing onto her lap, I burrowed into her chest, but it felt different now. Flat and bony. Not soft like it used to be.

โ€œItโ€™s okay,โ€ Mammy whispered, wrapping her arms around me. Her skin looked yellow now, not peach like it used to, and her head was shiny and bald.

โ€œNow, Iโ€™ve been cutting you slack because I understand how hard the past couple of years have been on you, but youโ€™ve overstepped your mark, young lady,โ€ Daddy told Caoimhe. โ€œI understand your frustrations, and I feel for you, but taking it out on your sick mother is not the way to handle this, Caoimhe.โ€

Breaking down in front of him, my sister covered her face with her hands and screamed, โ€œI wish I was dead!โ€
