Part 1 โ The Formative Years
โWHATโS WRONG WITH HER?โ
โNothing.โ Mammy continued to cradle me to her chest. โSheโs perfect.โ
โWhy isnโt she talking by now?โ Caoimhe didnโt look happy. She didnโt sound happy either. โLizzie is three, Mam. Three. And sheโs not doing anything sheโs supposed to be doing.โ
โSheโs fine, Caoimhe,โ Mammy said, using an extra happy voice. โSheโll catch up.โ She kissed my cheek, and I burrowed in close to her chest. I loved her smell and the way she held me tight. I liked to press my ear against her chest and listen to her heart thump.
Thump, thump, thump.
I smiled and touched her face. She had the best face. She had kind eyes. They were blue, just like mine. I knew the color. I knew all the colors and wanted to tell my sister that. I justโฆcouldnโt get the words to come out.
My voice wouldnโt work.
โDo you think sheโs slow?โ Caoimhe asked, sounding sad, and I wanted to make her feel better because I wasnโt slow at running. I was super fast. โDoes she need, like, a special school or something?โ
โThis is not a conversation for little ears.โ Mammyโs voice was cross now, and I didnโt like it. Burrowing in deeper, I hid my face in her cardigan. โSo please, just go and do your homework. We can talk about this tonight when your father gets home.โ
โI want to go home.โ
โWe are home, Caoimhe.โ
โNo, I want to go back to our real home,โ she shouted. โI hate it in England, Mam. I donโt have any friends, and everyone at school teases me for the way I talk.โ
โTheyโre idiots,โ Mammy told her. โIgnore them.โ
โThatโs easy for you to say,โ my sister said before turning to me. โYou ruined everything,โ she screamed. โI wish you were never born.โ
โCaoimhe!โ
โIโm not sorry, Mam, because itโs true!โ
โLook at me, pretty girl,โ Mammy said after my sister had stomped out of the room. โShow me those big, blue eyes.โ
I did.
โThere you are.โ Smiling warmly, she brushed my hair off my face. โYou are perfect, do you hear me?โ
I nodded.
โYou are my baby, and I will always look after you.โ She tickled under my chin and smiled. โAnd you must never let anyone make you feel like there is something wrong with you.โ She tickled my chin again. โDo you understand me, Lizzie?โ
I nodded again.
โGood.โ She smiled again. โI love you, sweetheart.โ
