GIDEON
AFTER THE COMMOTION CAUSEDย by Gideonโs old friends, more chairs were pulled up to the table, and Abbie, Ash, and the others squished in. As Antonio and Bess retreated to the kitchen to cook more food for their unexpected guests, Gideon finally sat back down.
Which was when he noticed the empty seat across the table. โWhereโs Rune?โ
Bess, bringing out more coffee, poured some into Ashโs cup and said, โI saw her riding into the headlands. Thereโs a hot spring out there. I told her the heat would do those wounds of hers some good.โ
Gideon frowned, remembering the scar heโd seen on her neck. โWhat wounds?โ
Bess startled, missing Ashโs cup and spilling coffee on the tablecloth. โOh! I assumed you knew.โ She shook her head. โIโm sorry. I shouldnโt have said anything.โ
Gideon was about to press her when Juniper said quietly, โRuneโs back was flayed to the bone.โ
His temperature spiked.
โWhat?โ
Bess nodded, clearly relieved to no longer be the only one revealing Runeโs secret. โI saw the marks this morning, when she asked for help dressing.โ
Flayed to the bone?
โWhoโโ
โCressida whipped her within an inch of her life,โ said Juniper. Everyone turned to stare at her.
โIt took all of my skill to stop the bleeding,โ she added. โShe was in and out of consciousness for days. She was in a sickbed for the entire voyage back to the island. She โฆ she didnโt tell you any of this?โ
Gideonโs fists clenched beneath the table.
Seraphine frowned at Gideon. โRune defied Cressida, knowing what would happen. She did it to break your curse.โ
To break my โฆ
He thought of his dream. Of Rune climbing into his bed. Of her softness and warmth, nestled against him.
It wasnโt a dream.
โCressida was going to kill her,โ said Seraphine. โThe only reason she didnโt is because I gave her what she wanted: the name of the missing Roseblood heir.โ
Gideonโs head spun.
Cressida knows Rune is her sister.
Who else knew?
Seraphine wouldnโt state it outright, not here, because it would put Runeโs life at risk. But if Rune ended up back in Cressโs hands โฆ
He pushed out his chair and rose to his feet. โWhere is this hot spring?โ
