Chapter no 64

Rebel Witch (The Crimson Moth, #2)

โ€Œ

GIDEON

AFTER THE COMMOTION CAUSEDย by Gideonโ€™s old friends, more chairs were pulled up to the table, and Abbie, Ash, and the others squished in. As Antonio and Bess retreated to the kitchen to cook more food for their unexpected guests, Gideon finally sat back down.

Which was when he noticed the empty seat across the table. โ€œWhereโ€™s Rune?โ€

Bess, bringing out more coffee, poured some into Ashโ€™s cup and said, โ€œI saw her riding into the headlands. Thereโ€™s a hot spring out there. I told her the heat would do those wounds of hers some good.โ€

Gideon frowned, remembering the scar heโ€™d seen on her neck. โ€œWhat wounds?โ€

Bess startled, missing Ashโ€™s cup and spilling coffee on the tablecloth. โ€œOh! I assumed you knew.โ€ She shook her head. โ€œIโ€™m sorry. I shouldnโ€™t have said anything.โ€

Gideon was about to press her when Juniper said quietly, โ€œRuneโ€™s back was flayed to the bone.โ€

His temperature spiked.

โ€œWhat?โ€

Bess nodded, clearly relieved to no longer be the only one revealing Runeโ€™s secret. โ€œI saw the marks this morning, when she asked for help dressing.โ€

Flayed to the bone?

โ€œWhoโ€”โ€

โ€œCressida whipped her within an inch of her life,โ€ said Juniper. Everyone turned to stare at her.

โ€œIt took all of my skill to stop the bleeding,โ€ she added. โ€œShe was in and out of consciousness for days. She was in a sickbed for the entire voyage back to the island. She โ€ฆ she didnโ€™t tell you any of this?โ€

Gideonโ€™s fists clenched beneath the table.

Seraphine frowned at Gideon. โ€œRune defied Cressida, knowing what would happen. She did it to break your curse.โ€

To break my โ€ฆ

He thought of his dream. Of Rune climbing into his bed. Of her softness and warmth, nestled against him.

It wasnโ€™t a dream.

โ€œCressida was going to kill her,โ€ said Seraphine. โ€œThe only reason she didnโ€™t is because I gave her what she wanted: the name of the missing Roseblood heir.โ€

Gideonโ€™s head spun.

Cressida knows Rune is her sister.

Who else knew?

Seraphine wouldnโ€™t state it outright, not here, because it would put Runeโ€™s life at risk. But if Rune ended up back in Cressโ€™s hands โ€ฆ

He pushed out his chair and rose to his feet. โ€œWhere is this hot spring?โ€
