Chapter no 28

Rebel Witch (The Crimson Moth, #2)

GIDEON

GIDEON WANTED NOTHING MOREย than to send this insect of a man overboard. The way he spoke to Rune,ย lookedย at Rune, made Gideonโ€™s skin crawl.

Unfortunately, he needed William alive.

โ€œWith respect, Captain Sharpe,โ€ said William, his back to Gideon, his hands in the air. โ€œYou had orders to kill the Crimson Moth. So why is she alive, pretending to be your wife?โ€

โ€œYou can lower your hands,โ€ said Gideon, who kept his gun trained on the spy. With Rune gone, he needed to convince William of his plan. And he wasnโ€™t likely to have much success if he continued to torment him.

Williamโ€™s arms dropped.

โ€œHarrow knew you werenโ€™t able to go through with it.โ€ He slowly turned to face Gideon. โ€œThatโ€™s why she sent me to do your job for you. But now youโ€™re interfering withย myย kill orders. How many times are you planning to betray the Republic?โ€

โ€œThe only person Iโ€™m planning to betray is Rune.โ€ Gideon lowered his gun, but kept it cocked. โ€œWhich is why I need your help.โ€

Williamโ€™s forehead creased.

โ€œI need to bring the Crimson Moth in alive.โ€

William crossed his arms, studying Gideon. โ€œIโ€™m listening.โ€

โ€œWe were wrong to think killing her would stop this war from comingโ€” it wonโ€™t even delay it. Soren will give Cress an army anyway, as revenge for his dead fiancรฉe. It was the wrong plan from the start.โ€

โ€œAnd you have the right one?โ€

โ€œCressida isnโ€™t only plotting a war. Sheโ€™s plotting to raise her sisters from the dead.โ€

Williamโ€™s eyes widened.

โ€œOur main goal,โ€ Gideon continued, โ€œshould be destroying her before she can set all her plans in motion. And the best way to destroy Cressida is to use Rune as a bargaining chip. To do that, I need to deliver Rune into the New Republic so I can set a trap for her and the long-lost Roseblood heir sheโ€™s going to summon.โ€

Gideon had Williamโ€™s full attention now.

โ€œAnd this is where you come in: I need you to convince Harrow to trust me.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re not exactly in a position to ask for trust.โ€

โ€œNevertheless, Iโ€™m asking you to report this back to her. All I need is one week. If, in a week, the Roseblood heir isnโ€™t dead and I havenโ€™t delivered the Crimson Moth into Blood Guard hands, Harrow can kill me herself.โ€

William fell silent, thinking it over. โ€œAll right. Iโ€™ll report what youโ€™ve told me.โ€

โ€œOne more thing.โ€

โ€œPushing our luck now, are we?โ€

Gideon lifted his pistol, aiming it directly at the center of Williamโ€™s forehead. Reminding him who exactly was lucky hereโ€”lucky to still be alive. โ€œI need to get Rune past the witch hunters and their hounds when we make port. If I manage to do everything Iโ€™m planning, Iโ€™ll make sure the Good Commander knows you helped me. Itโ€™ll mean a promotion, and a pay raise. But first you have to do me this one favor and make sure no hunting hounds set foot on this ship or anywhere near it before we deboard tomorrow. Can you do that?โ€

โ€œI think so. Yes.โ€

โ€œGood.โ€ Gideon lowered the gun and put the safety back on. โ€œStay out of sight. I need Rune to think youโ€™re dead.โ€

โ€œFine,โ€ said William, turning to leave.

Gideon called out: โ€œAnd tell Harrow the next time one of her spies gets in the way of a job, I wonโ€™t be so gentle with them.โ€

William paused before the door, which hung open, revealing a steamy boiler room beyond. โ€œFor someone running out of chances, you make a lot of threats. Donโ€™t forget what the punishment is for sympathizing with witches. They donโ€™t carve a letter into your forehead anymore and send you on your way.โ€

No. With Cressida on the loose, they couldnโ€™t afford to be so lenient.

Now, sympathizers were taken out back and shot.

โ€œScrew this up,โ€ said William, โ€œand itโ€™ll be over for you. When it is, Iโ€™m coming for your little Moth.โ€

It took everything in Gideon not to raise his gun and fire.
