Chapter no 26

A Court of Wings and Ruin

Thatโ€™s who the final, empty seat was for.

And Rhys โ€ฆ

He remained sprawled in his chair, sipping from his wine. โ€œWelcome back, Eris,โ€ he drawled. โ€œItโ€™s been whatโ€”five centuries since you last set foot in here?โ€

Mor slid her eyes toward Rhys. Betrayal andโ€”hurt. That was hurt flashing there.

For not warning us. For this โ€ฆ surprise.

I wondered if I schooled my features with any more success than my friend as Eris claimed the vacant seat at the table, not bothering to so much as nod to a wary-eyed Keir. โ€œIt has indeed been a while.โ€

Heโ€™d healed since that day on the iceโ€”not a sign of the gut-wound Cassian had given him. His red hair was unbound, a silken drape over his well-tailored cobalt jacket.

What is he doing here, I speared down the bond, not bothering to hide any of what coursed through me.

Making sure Keir agrees to help, was all Rhys said, the words tight and clipped. Restrained.

As if he were still holding the full might of his rage in check.

Shadows curled around Azrielโ€™s shoulders, whispering in his ear as he stared down Eris.

โ€œYou once wanted to build ties to Autumn, Keir,โ€ said Rhys, setting down his goblet of wine. โ€œWell, hereโ€™s your chance. Eris is willing to offer you a formal allianceโ€”in exchange for your services in this war.โ€

How the hell did you get him to agree to that?

Rhys didnโ€™t answer.

Rhysand.

Keir leaned back in his chair. โ€œIt is not enough.โ€

Eris snorted, pouring himself a goblet of wine from the decanter in the center of the table. โ€œIโ€™d forgotten why I was so relieved when our bargain fell apart the last time.โ€

Rhys shot him a warning look. Eris just drank deeply. โ€œWhat is it that you want, then, Keir?โ€ Rhys purred.

I had the feeling if Keir suggested me again, heโ€™d wind up splattered on the wall.

But Keir must have known, too. And said simply to Rhysand, โ€œI want out.

I want space. I want my people to be free of this mountain.โ€

โ€œYou have every comfort,โ€ I finally said. โ€œAnd yet it is not enough?โ€ Keir ignored me as well. As Iโ€™m sure he ignored most women in his life.

โ€œYou have been keeping secrets, High Lord,โ€ Keir said with a hateful smile, interlacing his hands and resting them on the mauled table. Right atop the nearest deep gouge. โ€œI always wonderedโ€”where all of youย wentย when you werenโ€™t here. Hybern answered the question at lastโ€”thanks to that attack on โ€ฆ what is its name? Velaris. Yes. On Velaris. The City of Starlight.โ€

Mor went utterly still.

โ€œI want access to the city,โ€ Keir said. โ€œFor me, and my court.โ€ โ€œNo,โ€ Mor said. The word echoed off the pillars, the glass, the rock.

I was inclined to agree. The thought of these people, of Keir, in Velaris โ€ฆ Tainting it with their presence, their hatred and small-mindedness, their disdain and cruelty โ€ฆ

Rhys did not refuse. Did not shoot down the suggestion.

You canโ€™t be serious.

Rhys only watched Keir as he answered down the bond,ย I anticipated this

โ€”and I took precautions.

I contemplated it.ย The meeting with the Palace governors โ€ฆ That was tied to this?

Yes.

Rhysand said to Keir, โ€œThere would be conditions.โ€

Mor opened her mouth, but Azriel laid a scarred hand atop hers.

She snatched her hand back as if sheโ€™d been burnedโ€”burned as he had been.

Azrielโ€™s mask of cold didnโ€™t so much as waver at the rejection. Though Eris chuckled softly. Enough to make Azrielโ€™s hazel eyes glaze with rage as

he settled them upon the High Lordโ€™s son. Eris only inclined his head to the shadowsinger.

โ€œI want unrestricted access,โ€ Keir said to Rhys.

โ€œYou will not get it,โ€ Rhys said. โ€œThere will be limited stays, limited numbers allowed in. To be decided later.โ€

Mor turned pleading eyes to Rhys. Her cityโ€”the place that she loved so muchโ€”

I could almost hear it. The crack I knew was about to sound amongst our own circle.

Keir looked to Mor at lastโ€”noted the despair and anger. And smiled. He had no real desire to get out of here.

Only a desire to take something heโ€™d undoubtedly gleaned that his daughter cherished.

I could have gladly shredded through his throat as Keir said, โ€œDone.โ€

Rhys didnโ€™t so much as smile. Mor was only staring and staring at him, that beseeching expression crumpling her face.

โ€œThere is one more thing,โ€ I added, squaring my shoulders. โ€œOne more request.โ€

Keir deigned to acknowledge me. โ€œOh?โ€

โ€œI have need of the Ouroboros mirror,โ€ I said, willing ice into my veins. โ€œImmediately.โ€

Interest and surprise flared in Keirโ€™s brown eyes. Morโ€™s eyes. โ€œWho told you that I have it?โ€ he asked quietly.

โ€œDoes it matter? I want it.โ€

โ€œDo you even know what the Ouroborosย is?โ€ โ€œConsider your tone, Keir,โ€ Rhys warned.

Keir leaned forward, bracing his forearms on the table. โ€œThe mirror โ€ฆโ€ He laughed under his breath. โ€œConsider it my mating present.โ€ He added with sweet venom, โ€œIf you can take it.โ€

Not a threat to face him, butโ€” โ€œWhat do you mean?โ€

Keir rose to his feet, smirking like a cat with a canary in its mouth. โ€œTo take the Ouroboros, to claim it, you must first look into it.โ€ He headed for the doors, not waiting to be dismissed. โ€œAnd everyone who has attempted to do so has either gone mad or been broken beyond repair. Even a High Lord or two, if legend is true.โ€ A shrug. โ€œSo it is yours, if you dare to face it.โ€ Keir paused at the threshold as the doors opened on a phantom wind. He said to Rhys, perhaps the closest heโ€™d come to asking for permission to leave, โ€œLord

Thanatos is having โ€ฆ difficulties with his daughter again. He requires my assistance.โ€ Rhys only waved a hand, as if he hadnโ€™t just yielded our city to the male. Keir jerked his chin at Eris. โ€œI will wish to speak with youโ€”soon.โ€

Once he was done gloating over his victory tonight. What weโ€™d given. And lost.

If the Ouroboros could not be retrieved, at least without such terrible risk

โ€ฆ I shut out the thought, sealing it away for later, as Keir left. Leaving us alone with Eris.

The heir of Autumn just sipped his wine.

And I had the terrible sense that Mor had gone somewhere far, far away as Eris set down his goblet and said, โ€œYou look well, Mor.โ€

โ€œYou donโ€™t speak to her,โ€ Azriel said softly.

Eris gave a bitter smile. โ€œI see youโ€™re still holding a grudge.โ€

โ€œThis arrangement, Eris,โ€ Rhys said, โ€œrelies solely upon you keeping your mouth shut.โ€

Eris huffed a laugh. โ€œAnd havenโ€™t I done an excellent job? Not even my father suspected when I left tonight.โ€

I glanced between my mate and Eris. โ€œHow did this come about?โ€

Eris looked me over. The crown and dress. โ€œYou didnโ€™t think that I knew your shadowsinger would come sniffing around to see if Iโ€™d told my father about your โ€ฆ powers? Especially after my brothers so mysteriouslyย forgotย about them, too. I knew it was a matter of time before one of you arrived to take care of my memory as well.โ€ Eris tapped the side of his head with a long finger. โ€œToo bad for you, I learned a thing or two about daemati. Too bad for my brothers that I never bothered to teach them.โ€

My chest tightened.ย Rhys.

To keep me safe from Beronโ€™s wrath, to keep this potential alliance with the High Lords from falling apart before it began โ€ฆย Rhys.

It was an effort to keep my eyes from burning.

A gentle caress down the bond was his only answer.

โ€œOf course I didnโ€™t tell my father,โ€ Eris went on, drinking from his wine again. โ€œWhy waste that sort of information on the bastard? His answer would be to hunt you down and kill youโ€”not realizing how much shit weโ€™re in with Hybern and that you might be the key to stopping it.โ€

โ€œSo he plans to join us, then,โ€ Rhys said.

โ€œNot if he learns about your little secret.โ€ Eris smirked.

Mor blinkedโ€”as if realizing that Rhysโ€™s contact with Eris, his invitation

here โ€ฆ The glance she gave me, clear and settled, told me enough. Hurt and anger still swirled, but understanding, too.

โ€œSo whatโ€™s the asking price, Eris?โ€ Mor demanded, leaning her bare arms on the dark glass. โ€œAnother little bride for you to torture?โ€

Something flickered in Erisโ€™s eyes. โ€œI donโ€™t know who fed you those lies to begin with, Morrigan,โ€ he said with vicious calm. โ€œLikely the bastards you surround yourself with.โ€ A sneer at Azriel.

Mor snarled, rattling the glasses. โ€œYou never gave any evidence to the contrary. Certainly not when you left me in those woods.โ€

โ€œThere were forces at work that you have never considered,โ€ Eris said coldly. โ€œAnd I am not going to waste my breath explaining them to you. Believe what you want about me.โ€

โ€œYou hunted me down like an animal,โ€ I cut in. โ€œI think weโ€™ll choose to believe the worst.โ€

Erisโ€™s pale face flushed. โ€œI was given an order. And sent to do it with two of my โ€ฆ brothers.โ€

โ€œAnd what of the brother you hunted down alongside me? The one whose lover you helped to execute before his eyes?โ€

Eris laid a hand flat on the table. โ€œYou knowย nothingย about what happened that day.ย Nothing.โ€

Silence.

โ€œIndulge me,โ€ was all I said.

Eris stared me down. I stared right back.

โ€œHow do you think he made it to the Spring border,โ€ he said quietly. โ€œI wasnโ€™t thereโ€”when they did it. Ask him. I refused. It was the first and only time I have denied my father anything. He punished me. And by the time I got free โ€ฆ They were going to kill him, too. I made sure they didnโ€™t. Made sure Tamlin got wordโ€”anonymouslyโ€”to get the hell over to his own border.โ€

Where two of Erisโ€™s brothers had been killed. By Lucien and Tamlin.

Eris picked at a stray thread on his jacket. โ€œNot all of us were so lucky in our friends and family as you, Rhysand.โ€

Rhysโ€™s face was a mask of boredom. โ€œIt would seem so.โ€

And none of this entirely erased what heโ€™d done, but โ€ฆ โ€œWhat is the asking price,โ€ I repeated.

โ€œThe same thing I told Azriel when I found him snooping through my fatherโ€™s woods yesterday.โ€

Hurt flared in Morโ€™s eyes as she whipped her head toward the

shadowsinger. But Azriel didnโ€™t so much as acknowledge her as he announced, โ€œWhen the time comes โ€ฆ we are to support Erisโ€™s bid to take the throne.โ€

Even as Azriel spoke, that frozen rage dulled his face. And Eris was wise enough to finally pale at the sight. Perhaps that was why Eris had kept knowledge of my powers to himself. Not just for this sort of bargaining, but to avoid the wrath of the shadowsinger. The blade at his side.

โ€œThe request still stands, Rhysand,โ€ Eris said, mastering himself, โ€œto just kill my father and be done with it. I can pledge troops right now.โ€

Mother above. He didnโ€™t even try to hide itโ€”to look at all remorseful. It was an effort to keep my jaw from dropping to the table at his intent, the casualness with which he spoke it.

โ€œTempting, but too messy,โ€ Rhys replied. โ€œBeron sided with us in the War.

Hopefully heโ€™ll sway that way again.โ€ A pointed stare at Eris.

โ€œHe will,โ€ Eris promised, running a finger over one of the claw marks gouged into the table. โ€œAnd will remain blissfully unaware of Feyreโ€™s โ€ฆ gifts.โ€

A throneโ€”in exchange for his silence. And sway.

โ€œPromise Keir nothing you care about,โ€ Rhys said, waving a hand in dismissal.

Eris just rose to his feet. โ€œWeโ€™ll see.โ€ A frown at Mor as he drained his wine and set down the goblet. โ€œIโ€™m surprised you still canโ€™t control yourself around him. You had every emotion written right on that pretty face of yours.โ€

โ€œWatch it,โ€ Azriel warned.

Eris looked between them, smiling faintly. Secretly. As if he knew something that Azriel didnโ€™t. โ€œI wouldnโ€™t have touched you,โ€ he said to Mor, who blanched again. โ€œBut when you fucked that other bastardโ€”โ€ A snarl ripped from Rhysโ€™s throat at that. And my own. โ€œI knew why you did it.โ€ Again that secret smile that had Mor shrinking.ย Shrinking. โ€œSo I gave you your freedom, ending the betrothal in no uncertain terms.โ€

โ€œAnd what happened next,โ€ Azriel growled.

A shadow crossed Erisโ€™s face. โ€œThere are few things I regret. That is one of them. But โ€ฆ perhaps one day, now that we are allies, I shall tell you why. What it cost me.โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t give a shit,โ€ Mor said quietly. She pointed to the door. โ€œGet out.โ€ Eris gave a mocking bow to her. To all of us. โ€œSee you at the meeting in

twelve days.โ€
