Chapter no 42

Onyx Storm (The Empyrean, #3)

While the enemyโ€™s advance throughout Krovla makes it impossible to station a full riot at Suniva, we offer you four dragons and their riders. In the spirit of our alliance, you may expect a shipment of our most valuable resourceโ€”weaponryโ€”to be used at your discretion.

โ€”Official Correspondence of General Augustine Melgren to Queen Maraya

Handed meย what? I blink in confusion.

Ridoc glances my way, and I shake my head with a shrug. I havenโ€™t manifested a second signet from Andarna.

โ€œYou have weaponized your magic, even yourย tail,โ€ the tallest irid continues.ย โ€œYouโ€™ve become the very thing we abhor, the horror we fled from.โ€

He didย not.ย Rage brings my power buzzing to the surface.

โ€œShe is not a horror!โ€ I march forward as Andarnaโ€™s scales turn black, unable to listen to one more second of this bullshit.

โ€œNo,ย youย are.โ€ย The male cranes his head in my direction.ย โ€œShe is but what you made her.โ€

My nails bite into the palms of my hands and my chest tightens.

โ€œI do not understandโ€ฆโ€ย Andarnaโ€™s tail flicks over the sand in front of me, and I step back, respecting the boundary.ย โ€œYou will not return with us?โ€ย she asks.ย โ€œYou will not help us achieve the peace you worship?โ€

โ€œWe will not.โ€ย The male lifts his head, and I follow his line of sight. Chradh and Sgaeyl are back, just in time to witness our complete and total failure.ย โ€œWe have watched some of your journey and feel it is not peace you seek, but victory.โ€

The male with the spiral horns stares at Andarna but remains quiet.

My heart starts to race. Oh gods, this is really happening. Our last hope is dwindling right before my eyes. Weโ€™ve risked everything, and they wonโ€™t help.

โ€œPeace requires the Aretian wardstone, which we cannot fire without you!โ€ย Andarna snarls.

โ€œI fail to see how that is a mutual problem,โ€ย the female replies.

โ€œDo you not care that people will die?โ€ย Andarna curls her tail high above her back.

โ€œPerhaps they should.โ€ย The tallest male blinks.ย โ€œPerhaps the corrupted ones should devour the land in its entirety. Only when theyโ€™re faced with starvation will they confront the evil theyโ€™ve become. Either theyโ€™ll die off and the land will regenerate, or theyโ€™ll confront the abominations theyโ€™ve become and change.โ€

Change. My heart launches into my throat.

โ€œHow do they do that?โ€ย Andarna asks, and apprehension trickles down the bond from Tairn as wingbeats fill the air. Xaden and Garrick are almost here.

โ€œTheir offspring could evolve, perhaps,โ€ย the female muses, watching Sgaeyl and Chradh land near the stream twenty yards away.ย โ€œOthers arrive. We should depart.โ€

No, no. Panic climbs my spine. We canโ€™t fail. This canโ€™t beย it.

Xaden and Garrick dismount on the black sand beach, high above the tide line, and Tairn snaps his head toward Sgaeyl. Whatever he communicates keeps the two dragons from coming our way, but not their riders.

โ€œIs that the dark wielderโ€™s cure?โ€ย Andarna asks, her head moving in a serpentine motion.ย โ€œTo evolve?โ€

My breath freezes in my chest.

The femaleโ€™s golden eyes narrow to slits.ย โ€œThere is no cure.โ€

No cure? Her words hit like a physical blow, and my knees threaten to buckle.

โ€œIf they trade their soul, surely they can get it back,โ€ย Andarna retorts.

โ€œIt is not a trade,โ€ย the female lectures.ย โ€œThe soul is not kept by the earth as dark wielders steal its magic. The power exchange kills the soul one piece at a time, and death has no cure.โ€

Xaden and Garrick keep their eyes on the irids as they stride our way without their flight jackets, swords strapped to their backs, the perfect example of warfare.

His soul isnโ€™tย dead.

โ€œWill you not at least tell us how the dark wielders were defeated in the Great War?โ€ย Andarna asks, her words flowing faster, like she knows her time is short.

โ€œApparently they werenโ€™t if youโ€™re here asking,โ€ย the female replies.

The male with the spiral horns watches Xaden and Garrick as they carefully cross behind Ridoc and me, moving to my right side.

โ€œOur kind must have helped,โ€ย Andarna tries again.ย โ€œI can burn dark wielders. Are we the key to defeating them?โ€

โ€œHopeless.โ€ย The tallest male backs into the water.ย โ€œLeothan, I have heard enough.โ€

The other male flares his nostrils.ย โ€œI have not.โ€

โ€œThey can hear us through the bond,โ€ I quickly sign to Xaden. โ€œItโ€™s not going well.โ€

He nods.

โ€œWant to catch us up?โ€ Garrick signs, studying the massive heads lowered in our direction.

โ€œThey think Andarna is a weapon, which is somehow a bad thing,โ€ Ridoc signs. โ€œThey wonโ€™t come back to help us and pretty much think we all deserve to die because we canโ€™t solve mankindโ€™s oldest problem of how to stop killing each other.โ€

โ€œGot it,โ€ Xaden signs.

โ€œAnd thereโ€™s no cure for venin,โ€ Ridoc quickly continues, and itโ€™s all I can do not to grab his hands to stop him from saying more. โ€œTheir souls die, so there goes our save-them-to-defeat-them idea.โ€

Fuck.

Xadenโ€™s head snaps forward as Andarnaโ€™s talons flex in the sand.

โ€œYou are magic,โ€ย the female says, a note of sadness in her tone.ย โ€œAnd yet all you seek to use it for is violence.โ€

โ€œYou preach peace while only having known its privilege,โ€ย Andarna hisses in retort.ย โ€œYou are all a disappointment to me.โ€

โ€œIn that, we find common ground,โ€ย the tallest male says.

What an ass.

Tairn growls, rumbling the sand and vibrating the trees, and Andarnaโ€™s scales ripple to the darkest black as she retreats to his right foreleg.

โ€œWe have a long flight ahead, and there is nothing to be gained here,โ€ย the male continues, retreating another step into the water.ย โ€œThe world was not ready for you, and though it is no fault of your own, we cannot accept you.โ€

I gasp and clutch Xadenโ€™s hand.

โ€œWhatโ€™s happening?โ€ Garrick signs.

Maybe itโ€™s best they not hear this.

โ€œLeothan may feel differentlyโ€โ€”the tallest male glances at the other oneโ€”โ€œbut our majority has determined you are irid in scale and name only, Andarna. You will not be allowed entrance to our isle nor instruction in our ways. We part here and wish you peace.โ€

Peace? My grip tightens on Xadenโ€™s hand.

โ€œI wish Iโ€™d never met you,โ€ย Andarna growls.

The tallest male crouches in the water before launching into the air, his scales shimmering for a heartbeat before he becomes the sky itself.

โ€œWhat just happened?โ€ Xaden asks.

โ€œI think we lost,โ€ Ridoc whispers.

Andarnaโ€™s snout dips, and bone-splitting agony courses down the bond, but itโ€™s the shame that hits in the second wave that pricks my eyes.

โ€œAndarna, no,โ€ I whisper. โ€œYou are fierce, and smart, and brave, and loyal. None of this is your fault. Youโ€™re perfect.โ€

โ€œI amโ€ฆnot,โ€ย she snarls, whipping her head toward me.

โ€œYou did not know she was a juvenile when you bonded her?โ€ย Leothan asks, his golden gaze studying the four of us humans.

โ€œI didnโ€™t,โ€ I answer out loud. โ€œI should have, but the hatchlings and juveniles are kept hidden and safe within the Vale until after the Dreamless Sleep. Nobody had seen one for centuries, so we didnโ€™t realize that theyโ€™re all golden feathertails until adolescence.โ€

โ€œWhat is goingโ€”โ€ Garrick twitches. โ€œFuck, that hurts!โ€

Xaden grimaces, lowering his head and squeezing his eyes shut.

Iโ€™m guessing they just got the slide-whistle treatment.

โ€œThe uniformity assures all hatchlings are cared for without deference to breed or denโ€”โ€ย Leothan startles as Xaden looks up.

The female recoils, baring her dripping teeth.ย โ€œHow could you align yourselves with this?โ€

Weird way to say โ€œbond,โ€ but whatever.

โ€œAgain, I didnโ€™t know she was a juvenile,โ€ I argue. โ€œBlame me, not her!โ€

โ€œAbomination.โ€ย The female hurls the insult, her eyes narrowing.

On Xaden.

My head snaps in Xadenโ€™s direction, and I gasp. The rims of his irises shine bright red.

โ€œYour kind is beyond redemption.โ€ย The female glares at Sgaeyl, then disappears.

Leothan studies Xaden for a heartbeat longer, then fades, and waves rush in where theyโ€™d been standing. Wind from invisible wingbeats gusts against my face, and I squeeze my eyes shut as sand blows all over us, their presence slipping from my mind just like before. When I open them, Xadenโ€™s eyes have returned to normal.

Or rather, his new normal. There are still spots of amber within their onyx depths.

โ€œFuck.โ€ His tone could cut scale as his fingers slip out of mine.

โ€œYouโ€™re not an abomโ€”โ€

He slams his shields down, blocking me out.

Something heartbreakingly close to a whimper sounds to our right, and I look past Garrick to find Andarna retreating into the jungle, her scales shifting to gold.

โ€œAndarna.โ€ย I start toward her, but she blocks me out, too.

โ€œIโ€™ve got her.โ€ย Tairn rises over us, and his tail takes out a tree to the left as he stalks into the jungle after her.ย โ€œTeine and Molvic approach.โ€

โ€œI canโ€”โ€

โ€œOnly one of us is fireproof,โ€ย he reminds me, disappearing in the vegetation.

My fingernails dig into my palms. Iโ€™ve never felt so helpless.

โ€œIโ€™m guessingย heโ€™sย why youโ€™ve been so hung up on finding a cure.โ€ Ridocโ€™s accusation hits me like a bucket of ice water, and I snap my gaze to his.

Oh.ย Fuck.

โ€œYeah.โ€ He nods at me. โ€œI saw his eyes turn red.โ€

โ€œRidocโ€”โ€ Xaden starts.

โ€œNot a single word from you,ย dark wielder,โ€ Ridoc grits out, his eyes locked on mine. โ€œVi, youโ€™ve got one chance to come clean and tell me what the actual fuck is going on.โ€
