Chapter no 38 – NIGHTMARE

Phantasma (Wicked Games, #1)

This time when she crashed through the floor, it wasnโ€™t as much of a surprise. Landing directly into Blackwellโ€™s arms, however,ย was.ย Debris rained down from the ceiling of the dining roomโ€”the exact same place she had crashed beforeโ€”causing her to sneeze and splutter.

โ€œHold on,โ€ Blackwell said, cradling her to his chest before transporting them both away to her room.

โ€œDid you know I would land in the same place?โ€ she asked, stunned.

โ€œI made an educated guess,โ€ he told her as he set her on her feet. โ€œAre you alright?โ€

โ€œUmโ€ฆย yes?โ€ she breathed. โ€œMaybe?โ€

โ€œYou summoned the Whispering Gate again,โ€ he stated.

โ€œYes.โ€

โ€œWhat did you find?โ€ he asked.

โ€œI foundโ€ฆย my mother.โ€ Opheliaโ€™s hand flew to her mouth in disbelief as this fully sank in.

Blackwellโ€™s expression gave nothing away. โ€œShe must have been waiting for you.โ€

Opheliaโ€™s breath hitched. โ€œWhat do you mean?โ€

โ€œWhen souls or Devils are on the Other Side, they summon the Whispering Gate to be able to communicate with each other across the different linear planes. Because you are a Necromancerโ€”and a Specterโ€”your soul has always beenย tied between life and death. Iโ€™m guessing that is what gives you access to the gateโ€”as long as thereโ€™s a strong enough pull from someone there who wants to speak with you.โ€

โ€œDoes that mean I could see her again?โ€ she asked, hopeful. โ€œIf I ever found a way back?โ€

He shook his head. โ€œThat, I donโ€™t know.โ€

Now, Ophelia looked down at her hands, unsure how to approach what she was about to say next. โ€œI told her everything. About Phantasma and my fight with Genevieve and aboutโ€ฆย us.โ€ She looked up at him now. โ€œShe was pretty adamant that we stay away from each other. Iโ€™m sure she fears the same fate for me that she and my father faced.โ€

Blackwell was unfazed. As if he had been expecting this. โ€œSheโ€™s right.โ€

Her heart dropped, and she stepped closer, lightly gripping the lapels of his overcoat. โ€œI know I panicked after what I said in the drinking parlor. About repeating history. But Iโ€™m my own person. We wonโ€™t have the same fateโ โ€”โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re right, we wonโ€™t,โ€ he said, tone solemn as he gripped her wrists and gently pried her hands from his coat. โ€œWhen Jasper revealed what happened to your parents, when you said we were repeating history, I realized you were right in asking for space. There can be no โ€˜weโ€™. Weโ€™ve been flirting with danger a little too much. Itโ€™s my turn to try and be the responsible one.โ€

She narrowed her eyes. โ€œAfter Jasper interrupted us,ย youย are the one who said weโ€™d be finishing what we started later.โ€

He closed his eyes. โ€œI changed my mind. This game is too dangerous to keep playing.โ€

I changed my mind.

Those words cut through her like a blade.

Not even the dead want you.ย The Shadowย Voice laughed.

โ€œThink of us asโ€โ€”he winced at what he was about to sayโ€”โ€œbusiness partners. If I wasnโ€™t as selfish as I am, I would tell you to leave Phantasma altogether, but I still need you to set me free.โ€

โ€œBusiness partners,โ€ she parroted, her tone numb.

โ€œYes.โ€ He swallowed. โ€œI once warned you that beings in Phantasma wouldnโ€™t have good intentions or motivesโ€ฆย we look out for ourselves first and foremost. I need to look out for myself before we run out of time and I fail this quest yet again.โ€

โ€œExcuse me for thinking that maybe all the times you were in my bedโ€”myย bodyโ€”would make you regard me differently despite what you said then. We tried the space thing. It didnโ€™t work. Because we find each other, remember? Thatโ€™s what you said.โ€

His eyes were missing their usual wicked spark as he stated, โ€œI canโ€™t, angel. And you should understand that, because failing this quest would mean I have to take a decade of your life away. And I donโ€™tย wantย to have to do thatโ€”I really donโ€™tโ€”but Iย will. You need to remember that.โ€

Her lip curled in utter disdain as her pride took the brunt of the blow his words just landed. โ€œYouโ€™re just as much of a bastard as Sinclair. The two of you hate each other, but youโ€™re no different. Selfish, egotistical. Iโ€™ve never once suggested that you needed toย careย for meโ€”or that I cared for you any deeper than I would a friend. But I thought you respected me enough to at least refrain from reminding meโ€”as if I were a naรฏve childโ€”that I stand to lose ten years of my life to you. I promise Iโ€™m well aware of the stakes between us.โ€

โ€œA friend?โ€ He lifted a brow. โ€œDo you fuck all your friends like youโ€™ve fucked me? But youโ€™re rightโ€”a child you are not. Naรฏve, howeverโ€ฆโ€

โ€œGo to fuckingย Hell,โ€ she spat.

His smile was tight. โ€œAre we not already here, angel?โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t ever,ย ever, call me that again,โ€ she ordered. โ€œYou want to beย business partners? Fine. But we are going to keep this strictly professional. You can call me Miss Grimm from here on out.โ€

โ€œAnd you, Miss Grimm,โ€ he said, โ€œcan call me only when itโ€™s absolutely necessary to do so.โ€

โ€œProbably not even, then.โ€ She glared at him. โ€œFeel free to go now.โ€

Without another word, or even a semblance of regret, he vanished.

She curled up beneath her covers, desperate for the sweet nothing of unconsciousness. When she finally fell asleep, however, she didnโ€™t find peace.

The nightmare had always been the same.

Ophelia was standing in the large, open den of Grimm Manor. In front of her stood three faceless suitors while her mother and Genevieve stood off to the side. Looming behind her was the Shadow Voice, no longer a figment of her imagination but a smoky entity made of writhing, ebony-colored wisps. Shadowy tendrils were wrapped around her wrists and throat, like she was a macabre marionette, the Shadow Voice her puppeteer.

โ€œWhy would I want her?โ€ the first suitor said. โ€œShe canโ€™t even control herself. And Iโ€™m not living withย thatย thing in my house.โ€

โ€œImagine having to share a bed with such a freak,โ€ the next one snickered. โ€œAnd not the good kind.โ€

โ€œToo high maintenance,โ€ the last one agreed. โ€œIf she were normal, she wouldnโ€™t be so hard to look at, though, I suppose. If she broke free of that creature, I would take her into considerationโ€ฆโ€

Her mother sighed in disappointment and exchanged a loaded look with her sister. โ€œI guess sheโ€™ll have to continue beingย our burden.โ€

I donโ€™t want to be a burden, she tried to scream, but the Shadow Voice tightened its hold on her throat.

Hush, girl,ย it said.ย We wonโ€™t let them treat you like this.

A knife suddenly appeared in her hand.

If they cannot live with both of us, they must perish.

โ€œWhat? No!โ€

Kill them.

โ€œNo! I wonโ€™t.โ€

You donโ€™t have a choice, you belong to me.ย The tendrils around her wrist tightened and yanked her forward.ย Make them pay.

She approached the first suitor and watched in horror as the Shadow Voice manipulated her limbs and made her plunge the knife into his heart. Blood splattered across her face as the faceless person slumped to their knees.

The Shadow Voice cackled.ย Next. Slit their throat.

She reached up and dragged the sharp point of the blade across the second suitorโ€™s throat, blood pouring to the ground as they joined the first suitor on the floor. By the time she turned to the third suitor, they were cowering, pleading for their life. The Shadow Voice only became more amused.

Cut out this oneโ€™s heart,ย the Shadow Voice demanded.

So, she did. She let the beating organ fall to the ground with a sickly splat.

Now, we take care ofย them.ย The Shadow Voice turned her toward her mother and sister.

This is when she dug her heels in. โ€œNo.โ€

Yes, it hissed.ย They think youโ€™re a burden. They donโ€™t want you around. Get rid of them.

โ€œNo!โ€ she screamed as her feet moved forward involuntarily. Her mother and sister, clung to each other in fear, looking at her as if she were a complete stranger. A monster.

She cried as she tried to resist the shadowy restraintsย lifting her hand, preparing her weapon. As she brought it down, a shriek ripped from her throat andโ โ€”

She jolted awake. Chest heaving, the locket around her throat was hot to the touch, pulsing steadily. She glanced around to see what had awoken her from the nightmare, but there was nothing except the feeling of familiar static lingering in the air.
