Chapter no 34 – LEVEL FIVE

Phantasma (Wicked Games, #1)

WRATH

The scream that left her mouth as the ballroom dissolved around her couldโ€™ve turned a lesser place into rubble. She only quieted because her voice became too hoarse, and every inch of her skin felt as if it had been sliced by a thousand cuts. Not to mention the shooting migraine that had her rolling to her side and heaving up bile. Blackwell cursed from somewhere above.

He crouched down next to her, reaching out to run a soothing hand over her back. โ€œBreaking that sort of magic wreaks havoc on your senses. Youโ€™re going to feel like shit for a little longerโ€”but you have to get up.โ€

โ€œNo,โ€ she moaned, pressing her forehead to the cool ground. โ€œLeave me alone.โ€

โ€œOphelia,โ€ he said, voice turning firm. โ€œYou have to get up. Level five is beginning.โ€

That jolted her from her pain-induced haze. โ€œWhat?ย It should beย hoursย from now!โ€

โ€œSinclairโ€™s illusion really made you lose track of time,โ€ he said. โ€œDinner has already finished. I have to transport you to the dining roomย now,ย before youโ€™re disqualified.โ€

She grunted in discomfort as she heaved herself up from the ground, wincing at the pounding in her temples. โ€œOkay, okay. Take me there.โ€

He pulled her into him by her waist and blinked them out of the corridor in front of the library. When they appeared at theย archway to the dining room seconds later, there were no other contestants in sight. Just the door that would port her into level five, and a smug-looking Devil leaning on the wall next to it. The woman was nearly Blackwellโ€™s height, with straight black hair and blunt bangs, and a face people would start wars over.

โ€œWithout a second to spare,โ€ the Devil commented as Ophelia rushed toward the portal. โ€œNeed to keep your little mortal on a tighter leash, donโ€™t you think, Blackwell?โ€

โ€œFuck you, Rayea,โ€ Blackwell told the Devil, but the words didnโ€™t have as much bite as Ophelia would have liked.

โ€œAre you offering? Because my answer would be yes,โ€ Rayea purred, making Ophelia pause, hand on the doorknob. โ€œItโ€™s been a while after all.โ€

A ripple of jealousy burned through Opheliaโ€™s veins at the sultry way the Devil was watching Blackwell, at the implication of those last words. Ophelia glanced at Blackwell, but his expression was carefully blank.

Rayea flicked her eyes to Ophelia. โ€œYouโ€™d better get going, girl,โ€ she spat. โ€œOr youโ€™ll find yourself outside Phantasmaโ€™s gates.โ€

โ€œWhat about the clue?โ€ Ophelia gritted out.

Rayea shrugged. โ€œShouldโ€™ve been here on time if you needed the assistance. Now, if youโ€™d like to give Blackwell and I some privacy.โ€ The Devil made a shooing motion with her hand.

Ophelia threw open the door, scowling as she stepped forward, brushing off a surge of jealousy she had no business feeling. She steeled herself for whatever lay ahead. As she exited the portal, she was met by a cramped, featureless room, barely five square feet with no doors or windowsโ€”a hollow box. Her breath quickened at the realization that there was no obvious way out. Small, enclosed spaces were really starting to get to her.

As she scanned the smooth alabaster walls, searching for any hint of an exit, her thoughts drifted back to how Rayea had looked at Blackwell. She had disliked the way the Devil had said his name, like it was a name she’d once gasped in the throes of passion.

Did you see her body? the Shadow Voice taunted. As if you could compete.

Ophelia clenched her jaw. No. She wasnโ€™t about to get sidetracked by whatever wasโ€”or wasnโ€™tโ€”going on between Blackwell and his private affairs. This was exactly why she needed space. Losing focus during a life-or-death trial wasnโ€™t how she planned to go out.

She redirected her attention to the walls around her, fighting the impulse to summon Blackwell for help. First, there wasnโ€™t enough room here for two people, even if one was a ghost. Second, she had to start figuring things out on her own. After a moment of puzzling over her next moveโ€”and realizing her air supply might be limitedโ€”a low scraping sound echoed through the space. She spun to see a small square panel sliding open to reveal a hidden alcove. Inside were two chains with metal handles. Below the left one was inscribed forfeit, and below the rightโ€”wrath.

She sighed. โ€œWell, here goes nothing.โ€

She pulled the handle on the right.

A panel of buttons flipped up beneath the handles. Each button had a contestantโ€™s name etched beneath it. Ophelia gulped.

She didnโ€™t have any clues to go off of. She could only assume after having picked wrath that she was now supposed to pick who to enact thatย wrath againstโ€ฆ

Her fingers hovered over the button that was marked with Cadeโ€™s name.

Two breaths later and the walls around her began to shake and crack apart. One by one, each fell to the ground, revealing a larger room behind themโ€”and all seven of the other contestants standing in the rubble of their stone chambers. As she took in their faces, she was able to determine the five people that either died or took a Devilโ€™s bargain in level four. James, Eric, Becca, and two of the other contestants sheโ€™d never bothered to remember were officially gone. The last people standing in her group were herself, Cade, Beau, Luci, Leon, Edna, Charlotte, and a quiet man with an unfortunate cowlick in his mousy brown hair. Maybe sheโ€™d actually learn this oneโ€™s name before he left.

โ€œEveryone picked wrath,โ€ Luci observed, voice barely above a whisper.

Cade sneered at her. โ€œNo shit, cousin.โ€

Leon visibly tensed at Cadeโ€™s tone. โ€œDonโ€™t talk to her like that.โ€

โ€œWeโ€™re family, I can talk to her however I please,โ€ Cade spat at the boy.

โ€œWould you all shut the fuck up?โ€ Charlotte demanded. โ€œGod, the most torturous part of this fucking place has been being stuck listening to your insipid conversations.โ€

โ€œWho the fuck made you the boss?โ€ Cade snarled.

โ€œBetter than you, asshole,โ€ Edna quipped, crossing her arms over her chest as she glared at Cade. Something about her was different, and it took Ophelia a moment to piece it together; she had chopped off all of her long, blond hair. Now it didnโ€™t even brush the tops of her shoulders, swishing with every little movementย she made.

โ€œCareful, bitch, or youโ€™ll lose your ability to speak, just like your brother,โ€ Cade threw back.

Edna hissed at the mention of her brotherโ€™s unfortunate maiming, lurching across the circle at Cade.

Beau, ever the good henchman, stepped between them, pointing at something beyond the group. โ€œLook.โ€

They all turned in sync. Seven stone pedestals had risen from the ground. There was a beat of intense silence, all of them glancing around at each other as they did the math in their heads.

โ€œThat means everyone picked the same person,โ€ Leon said.

โ€œWhat were the clues?โ€ Ophelia asked, the question directed mostly at Luci.

โ€œIt was something about a unanimous decision,โ€ Luci told her. โ€œIf six of the seven of us chose the same person, only one of us wouldnโ€™t be able to make it to the next level. If the decisions had been split any other way, there was something about extra choice to be made.โ€

โ€œCade was the obvious choice,โ€ Charlotte spoke up then. โ€œEven his friends knew that, apparently, so I think itโ€™s clear heโ€™s the one who doesnโ€™t get a pedestal.โ€

Cadeโ€™s lips curled as he spat, โ€œOver my dead fucking body.โ€

And then the rush came.

Cade pulled no punches shoving people out of his way with brutal force as he lunged toward the pedestals. Edna took off after him, making a point to slam her palms into his back when she caught up, sending them both tumbling to the ground in a mess of thrashing limbs. Beau descended on Edna, snatching her back by her hair and pulling her off Cade. Cade slammed his fist into Ednaโ€™s stomach, making her grunt in pain, and as he wound his hand back to do it again, the mousy-haired man yanked Cade backย by his shirt.

โ€œStop it,โ€ the man ordered, voice level but firm. โ€œWhat is wrong with you?โ€

Cade whipped around. He was about a foot taller than the other man, an advantage he made sure to take as he loomed down over him menacingly.

โ€œOnly seven of us can get out of here. Which means one of us isnโ€™t making it. And I donโ€™t give a fuck if you all voted it should be meโ€”that was when all you had to do was push a button. Now is the real test. Try and take me out. I dare you,โ€ Cade snarled.

โ€œYouโ€™re not seriously going to murder someone, Cade,โ€ Luci said, aghast. โ€œWhat is the matter with you? I know things have been hard back home. I know your father gave you an ultimatum, but this is more than fighting to win. This isย evil. How could you have expected all of us to unanimously agree on anyoneย butย you at this rate?โ€

โ€œEvil?โ€ He gave a single hard laugh. โ€œAll the things youโ€™ve seen in this place, cousin, and you think I am the evil thing here? Because Iโ€™m not a coward? Because Iโ€™m willing to do what the rest of you wonโ€™t?โ€ Cade twisted around to look at everyone in the room with disdain. โ€œYou should all thank me!โ€

And when he spotted Ophelia, as if just remembering she was there, he paused. Ophelia didnโ€™t break his steely gaze even to blink.

โ€œBeau,โ€ Cade called out to his friend, who was still holding onto Edna. โ€œDrop that one. I have a better target in mind.โ€

Opheliaโ€™s fists balled by her side as she lifted her chin in challenge. โ€œIโ€™d like to see you try.โ€

โ€œYou got Eric killed, you Demonย bitch,โ€ Cade accused, stepping toward her. โ€œBeau saw you.โ€

โ€œThen he also saw that your friend was a fucking fool,โ€ she snorted. โ€œHe got what was coming to him forย attackingย me. As will you if you getย any closer.โ€

Cade made to charge at her, but Leon jumped between them before Cade could reach her.

โ€œStop,โ€ Leon insisted. โ€œWe arenโ€™t going to jump to murder, Cade.โ€

โ€œLook around and tell me what other options we have,โ€ Beau inserted.

โ€œSomeone could just call a Devil and make a bargain,โ€ Luci stated, voice soft. โ€œWouldnโ€™t that be better than murder or death?โ€

โ€œOh.โ€ Beau blinked. As if that thought would have never even occurred to him. It probably wouldnโ€™t have.

โ€œWhereโ€™s the fun in that?โ€ Cade sneered. โ€œAfter all, we all pickedย wrath,ย didnโ€™t we?โ€

โ€œI say this sincerely,โ€ Ophelia spoke, curling a lip in disgust at Cade. โ€œYou need an exorcism.โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t act like anyone here is going to willingly forfeit after coming this far,โ€ Cade shot back. โ€œI sure as Hell am not.โ€

Ophelia made a show of pressing a hand to her heart in mock surprise, staggering back a step as she exclaimed, โ€œTruly shocking!โ€

โ€œLetโ€™s seeย youย forfeit, then,โ€ Cade taunted.

Leon gave a frustrated sigh as he addressed the entire group this time. โ€œRaise your hand if youโ€™re inclined to forfeit.โ€

They all glanced around at each other. Not a single hand went up.

โ€œIt seems weโ€™re at an impasse, then,โ€ Charlotte stated.

โ€œNot as long as Iโ€™m around.โ€ Cade grinned.

And before anyone could stop him, he wrapped an arm around Ednaโ€™s neck in a chokehold. The girlโ€™s entire face turned red in an instant as she slammed her fist against Cadeโ€™s bicep, clawing at his skin with her nails, but Cade only squeezed harder. All of them were frozen, watching theย grotesque scene in front of them in horror, none of them moving until Edna was almost purple from the lack of oxygen.

Cade looked around at each of them in turn, eyes wild. โ€œIf you all watch her die, youโ€™re just as responsible for her fate as I am. Someone forfeitโ€”or we will all have blood on our hands.โ€

Ophelia swallowed. He was, for once, right. But she still didnโ€™t move. Not even when Edna grew limp in Cadeโ€™s arms. Not even when she could see the light begin to drain out of the girlโ€™s eyes.

And maybe it was because her hands had already been stained with blood after what she let happen to Eric. Or maybe she just decided getting to Genevieve was worth a few strangers.

Or maybe youโ€™re just as much of a monster as me,ย the Shadow Voice whispered.

Or that.

Let her die,ย the Shadow Voiceย insisted.ย Let him drain all the life from her. Itโ€™s what they deserve.

โ€œNo,โ€ Ophelia whispered.

Everyone shifted their uncomfortable gazes to her.

โ€œWhat was that, Ghost whore?โ€ Cade questioned. โ€œYou give in?โ€

โ€œNo,โ€ Ophelia growled, loud enough to boom through the room this time. โ€œLet her go. Now.โ€

โ€œOr what?โ€ Cade retorted.

Ophelia smiled slowly, making sure to show him all of her teeth. โ€œOr Iโ€™ll give you a demonstration of exactly what Iโ€™m capable of.โ€

Cade narrowed his eyes now. โ€œI donโ€™t believe you.โ€

No! Let her die!ย the Shadow Voice screamed.ย Youโ€™re a monster!

Maybe I am a monster,ย she thought back. But not the same sort as you.ย Never that.

Ednaโ€™s eyes were beginning to flutter closed for good. Thatโ€™s when Ophelia went completely invisible. A few choked gasps rang out as they stared at the spot she had been standing moments before. Cade visibly paled.

โ€œWhere is she?โ€ he demanded, a tinge of panic in his tone. โ€œWhere the fuck is she? I told you all she was a Demon!โ€

His hold on Edna had slackened, and Ophelia positioned herself behind him, unsure how long she could hold herself in this state, and gave a hard kick to the back of his knees. He yelped in surprise, going down like a sack of potatoes, Ednaโ€™s limp body hitting the ground with a heavy thud moments before he followed.

โ€œShe needs air!โ€ Ophelia yelled at them. โ€œSomeone check her pulse!โ€

Everyone sprang into action at once, Luci, Leon, and Charlotte going for Edna, beginning the motions to resuscitate the poor girl. Meanwhile, the mousy-haired man and Beau were watching intently for Cadeโ€™s next move.

Cade spun around in her direction, grasping at the air to find where she was. She easily dodged his arms before pulling her fist back and jamming it so hard into his face that she felt the skin of her knuckles split open. He grunted in pain as his nose began to gush blood, but when he sprang himself forward, she dodged him again. She got in one more good hit, to his jaw, before she couldnโ€™t hold her invisibility anymore, and she found herself flickering back into her solid state. Now that Cade could see her, his rage increased tenfold, reflecting the theme of this level perfectly.

โ€œHey! Sheโ€™s breathing!โ€ someone exclaimed. Leon.

Ophelia heard Edna choke on a ragged breath, sputtering as a hoarse sob heaved from her chest while tryingย to suck in as much oxygen as she could. But Ophelia didnโ€™t take her eyes off Cade for a moment. Disappointingly for Cade, he didnโ€™t get a chance to launch another attack.

โ€œI give up!โ€ Edna cried. โ€œPlease! Iโ€™m done! Iโ€™ll make a deal! Any deal! Just let meย leave. Iโ€™m so sorry, Michael. Please forgive me. Iโ€™m sorry. Iโ€™m sorry. Rayea!ย Get me out of here!โ€

The moment the last words were out the girlโ€™s mouth, Rayea appeared. Not bothering with a greeting or any sort of ceremony, the Devil clasped onto Ednaโ€™s arm and transported the girl from the room.
