Arthur Miller was born in New York City in 1915 and studied at the University of Michigan. He has also written two novels,ย Focusย (1945) andย The Misfits, which was filmed in 1960, and the text forย In Russiaย (1969),ย Chinese Encountersย (1979), andย In the Countryย (1977), three books of photographs by Inge Morath. His most recent works include a memoir,ย Mr. Petersโ Connectionsย (1999),ย Echoes Down the Corridor: Collected Essays 1944-2000, andย On Politics and the Art of Actingย (2001).ย Timebendsย (1987), and the playsย The Ride Down Mt. Morganย (1991),ย The Last Yankeeย (1993),ย Broken Glassย (1994). He has twice won the New York Drama Critics Circle Award, and in 1949 he was awarded the Pulitzer Prize.
Gerald Weales is Emeritus Professor of English at the University of Pennsylvania. He is the author ofย Religion in Modern English Drama,ย American Drama Since World War II,ย The Play and Its Parts,ย Tennessee Williams,ย The Jumping-Off Place,ย Clifford Odets, andย Canned Goods as Caviarย :ย American Film Comedy of the 1930s.ย Mr. Weales is the editor ofย Edwardian Plays,ย The Complete Plays of William Wycherley, and The Viking Critical Library edition of Arthur Millerโsย The Crucible. He has written a novel,ย Tale for the Bluebird, and two books for children. Mr. Weales won the George Jean Nathan Award for Drama Criticism in 1965.
