Chapter no 31 – HAZEL

The Son of Neptune (The Heroes of Olympus #2)

โ€ŒHazel considered making a run for it.โ€Œ

She didnโ€™t trust Queen Hylla, and she certainly didnโ€™t trust that other lady, Otrera. Only three guards were left in the room. All of them kept their distance.

Hylla was armed with just a dagger. This deep underground, Hazel might be able to cause an earthquake in the throne room, or summon a big pile of schist or gold. If she could cause a distraction, she might be able to escape and find her friends.

Unfortunately, sheโ€™d seen the Amazons fight. Even though the queen had only a dagger, Hazel suspected she could use it pretty well. And Hazel was unarmed. They hadnโ€™t searched her, which meant thankfully they hadnโ€™t taken Frankโ€™s firewood from her coat pocket, but her sword was gone.

The queen seemed to be reading her thoughts. โ€œForget about escape. Of course, weโ€™d respect you for trying. But weโ€™d have to kill you.โ€

โ€œThanks for the warning.โ€

Hylla shrugged. โ€œThe least I can do. I believe you come in peace. I believe Reyna sent you.โ€

โ€œBut you wonโ€™t help?โ€

The queen studied the necklace sheโ€™d taken from Percy. โ€œItโ€™s complicated,โ€ she said. โ€œAmazons have always had a rocky relationship with other demigodsโ€”especiallyย maleย demigods. We fought for King Priam in the Trojan War, but Achilles killed our queen, Penthesilea. Years before that, Hercules stole Queen Hippolytaโ€™s beltโ€”this belt Iโ€™m wearing. It took us

centuries to recover it. Long before that, at the very beginning of the Amazon nation, a hero named Bellerophon killed our first queen, Otrera.โ€

โ€œYou mean the ladyโ€”โ€

โ€œโ€”who just left, yes. Otrera, our first queen, daughter of Ares.โ€ โ€œMars?โ€

Hylla made a sour face. โ€œNo, definitelyย Ares.ย Otrera lived long before Rome, in a time when all demigods were Greek. Unfortunately, some of our warriors still prefer the old ways. Children of Aresโ€ฆthey are always the worst.โ€

โ€œThe old waysโ€ฆโ€ Hazel had heard rumors about Greek demigods.

Octavian believed they existed and were secretly plotting against Rome. But sheโ€™d never really believed it, even when Percy came to camp. He just didnโ€™t strike her as an evil, scheming Greek. โ€œYou mean the Amazons are a mixโ€ฆ Greekย andย Roman?โ€

Hylla continued to examine the necklaceโ€”the clay beads, theย probatioย tablet. She slipped Reynaโ€™s silver ring off the cord and put it on her own finger. โ€œI suppose they donโ€™t teach you about that at Camp Jupiter. The gods have many aspects. Mars, Ares. Pluto, Hades. Being immortal, they tend to accumulate personalities. They are Greek, Roman, Americanโ€”a combination of all the cultures theyโ€™ve influenced over the eons. Do you understand?โ€

โ€œIโ€”Iโ€™m not sure. Are all Amazons demigods?โ€

The queen spread her hands. โ€œWe all haveย someย immortal blood, but many of my warriors are descended from demigods. Some have been Amazons for countless generations. Others are children of minor gods. Kinzie, the one who brought you here, is the daughter of a nymph. Ahโ€”here she is now.โ€

The girl with the auburn hair approached the queen and bowed. โ€œThe prisoners are safely locked away,โ€ Kinzie reported. โ€œButโ€ฆโ€ โ€œYes?โ€ the queen asked.

Kinzie swallowed like she had a bad taste in her mouth. โ€œOtrera made sureย herย followers are guarding the cells. Iโ€™m sorry, my queen.โ€

Hylla pursed her lips. โ€œNo matter. Stay with us, Kinzie. We were just talking about our, ah, situation.โ€

โ€œOtrera,โ€ Hazel guessed. โ€œGaea brought her back from the dead to throw you Amazons into civil war.โ€

The queen exhaled. โ€œIf that was her plan, it is working. Otrera is a legend among our people. She plans to take back the throne and lead us to war against the Romans. Many of my sisters will follow her.โ€

โ€œNot all,โ€ Kinzie grumbled.

โ€œBut Otrera is a spirit!โ€ Hazel said. โ€œShe isnโ€™t evenโ€”โ€

โ€œReal?โ€ The queen studied Hazel carefully. โ€œI worked with the sorceress Circe for many years. I know a returned soul when I see one. When didย youย die, Hazelโ€”Nineteen twenty? Nineteen thirty?โ€

โ€œNineteen forty-two,โ€ Hazel said. โ€œButโ€”but I wasnโ€™t sent by Gaea. I came back toย stopย her. This is my second chance.โ€

โ€œYour second chanceโ€ฆโ€ Hylla gazed at the rows of battle forklifts, now empty. โ€œI know about second chances. That boy, Percy Jacksonโ€”he destroyed my old life. You wouldnโ€™t have recognized me back then. I wore dresses and makeup. I was a glorified secretary, an accursed Barbie doll.โ€

Kinzie made a three-fingered claw over her heart, like the voodoo gestures Hazelโ€™s mom once used for warding off the Evil Eye.

โ€œCirceโ€™s island was a safe place for Reyna and me,โ€ the queen continued. โ€œWe were daughters of the war goddess, Bellona. I wanted to protect Reyna from all that violence. Then Percy Jackson unleashed the pirates. They kidnapped us, and Reyna and I learned to be tough. We found out that we were good with weapons. The past four years, Iโ€™ve wanted toย killย Percy Jackson for what he made us endure.โ€

โ€œBut Reyna became the praetor of Camp Jupiter,โ€ Hazel said. โ€œYou became the queen of the Amazons. Maybe this was your destiny.โ€

Hylla fingered the necklace in her hand. โ€œI may not be queen for much longer.โ€

โ€œYou will prevail!โ€ Kinzie insisted.

โ€œAs the Fates decree,โ€ Hylla said without enthusiasm.

โ€œYou see, Hazel, Otrera has challenged me to a duel. Every Amazon has that right. Tonight at midnight, weโ€™ll battle for the throne.โ€

โ€œButโ€ฆyouโ€™re good, right?โ€ Hazel asked.

Hylla managed a dry smile. โ€œGood, yes, but Otrera is the founder of the Amazons.โ€

โ€œSheโ€™s a lot older. Maybe sheโ€™s out of practice, having been dead for so long.โ€

โ€œI hope youโ€™re right, Hazel. You see, itโ€™s a battle to the deathโ€ฆ.โ€

She waited for that to sink in. Hazel remembered what Phineas had said in Portlandโ€”how he had had a shortcut back from death, thanks to Gaea.

She remembered how the gorgons had tried to re-form in the Tiber. โ€œEven if you kill her,โ€ Hazel said, โ€œsheโ€™ll just come back. As long as

Thanatos is chained, she wonโ€™t stay dead.โ€

โ€œExactly,โ€ Hylla said. โ€œOtrera has already told us that sheย canโ€™tย die. So even if I manage to defeat her tonight, sheโ€™ll simply return and challenge me again tomorrow. There is no law against challenging the queen multiple times. She can insist on fighting me every night, until she finally wears me down. I canโ€™t win.โ€

Hazel gazed at the throne. She imagined Otrera sitting there with her fine robes and her silver hair, ordering her warriors to attack Rome. She imagined the voice of Gaea filling this cavern.

โ€œThere has to be a way,โ€ she said. โ€œDonโ€™t Amazons haveโ€ฆspecial powers or something?โ€

โ€œNo more than other demigods,โ€ Hylla said. โ€œWe can die, just like any mortal. Thereย isย a group of archers who follow the goddess Artemis. They are often mistaken for Amazons, but the Hunters forsake the company of

men in exchange for almost endless life. We Amazonsโ€”we would prefer to live life to the fullest. We love, we fight, we die.โ€

โ€œI thought you hated men.โ€ Hylla and Kinzie both laughed.

โ€œHate men?โ€ said the queen. โ€œNo, no, we like men. We just like to show them whoโ€™s in charge. But thatโ€™s beside the point. If I could, I would rally our troops and ride to my sisterโ€™s aid. Unfortunately, my power is tenuous. When I am killed in combatโ€”and itโ€™s only a matter of timeโ€”Otrera will be queen. She will march to Camp Jupiter with our forces, but she will not go to help my sister. Sheโ€™ll go to join the giantโ€™s army.โ€

โ€œWeโ€™ve got to stop her,โ€ Hazel said. โ€œMy friends and I killed Phineas, one of Gaeaโ€™s other servants in Portland. Maybe we can help!โ€

The queen shook her head. โ€œYou canโ€™t interfere. As queen, I must fight my own battles. Besides, your friends are imprisoned. If I let them go, Iโ€™ll look weak. Eitherย Iย execute you three as trespassers, or Otrera will do so when she becomes queen.โ€

Hazelโ€™s heart sank. โ€œSo I guess weโ€™re both dead. Me for the second time.โ€

In the corner cage, the stallion Arion whinnied angrily. He reared and slammed his hooves against the bars.

โ€œThe horse seems to feel your despair,โ€ the queen said. โ€œInteresting. Heโ€™s immortal, you knowโ€”the son of Neptune and Ceres.โ€

Hazel blinked. โ€œTwo gods had a horse for a kid?โ€ โ€œLong story.โ€

โ€œOh.โ€ Hazelโ€™s face felt hot with embarrassment.

โ€œHeโ€™s the fastest horse in the world,โ€ Hylla said. โ€œPegasus is more famous, with his wings, but Arion runs like the wind over land and sea. No creature is faster. It took us years to capture himโ€”one of our greatest prizes. But it did us no good. The horse will not allow anyone to ride him. I think he hates Amazons. And he is expensive to keep. He will eat anything, but he

prefers gold.โ€

The back of Hazelโ€™s neck tingled. โ€œHe eats gold?โ€

She remembered the horse following her in Alaska so many years ago.

She had thought he was eating nuggets of gold that appeared in her footsteps.

She knelt and pressed her hand against the floor. Immediately, the stone cracked. A chunk of gold ore the size of a plum was pushed out of the earth. Hazel stood, examining her prize.

Hylla and Kinzie stared at her.

โ€œHow did youโ€ฆ?โ€ The queen gasped. โ€œHazel, be careful!โ€

Hazel approached the stallionโ€™s cage. She put her hand between the bars, and Arion gingerly ate the chunk of gold from her palm.

โ€œUnbelievable,โ€ Kinzie said. โ€œThe last girl who tried thatโ€”โ€

โ€œNow has a metal arm,โ€ the queen finished. She studied Hazel with new interest, as if deciding whether or not to say more. โ€œHazelโ€ฆwe spent years hunting for this horse. It was foretold that the most courageous female warrior would someday master Arion and ride him to victory, ushering in a new era of prosperity for the Amazons. Yetย noย Amazon can touch him, much less control him. Even Otrera tried and failed. Two others died attempting to ride him.โ€

That probably shouldโ€™ve worried Hazel, but she couldnโ€™t imagine this beautiful horse hurting her. She put her hand through the bars again and stroked Arionโ€™s nose. He nuzzled her arm, murmuring contentedly, as if asking,ย More gold? Yum.

โ€œI would feed you more, Arion.โ€ Hazel glanced pointedly at the queen. โ€œBut I think Iโ€™m scheduled for an execution.โ€

Queen Hylla looked from Hazel to the horse and back again. โ€œUnbelievable.โ€

โ€œThe prophecy,โ€ Kinzie said. โ€œIs it possibleโ€ฆ?โ€

Hazel could almost see the gears turning inside the queenโ€™s head,

formulating a plan. โ€œYou have courage, Hazel Levesque. And it seems Arion has chosen you. Kinzie?โ€

โ€œYes, my queen?โ€

โ€œYou said Otreraโ€™s followers are guarding the cells?โ€ Kinzie nodded. โ€œI should have foreseen that. Iโ€™m sorryโ€”โ€

โ€œNo, itโ€™s fine.โ€ The queenโ€™s eyes gleamedโ€”the way Hannibal the elephantโ€™s did whenever he was unleashed to destroy a fortress. โ€œIt would be embarrassing for Otrera if her followers failed in their dutiesโ€”if, for instance, they were overcome by an outsider and a prison break occurred.โ€

Kinzie began to smile. โ€œYes, my queen. Most embarrassing.โ€

โ€œOf course,โ€ Hylla continued, โ€œnone of my guards would know aย thing

about this. Kinzie wouldย notย spread the word to allow an escape.โ€ โ€œCertainly not,โ€ Kinzie agreed.

โ€œAnd we couldnโ€™t help you.โ€ The queen raised her eyebrows at Hazel. โ€œBut if you somehow overpowered the guards and freed your friendsโ€ฆif, for instance, you took one of the guardsโ€™ Amazon cardsโ€”โ€

โ€œWith one-click purchasing enabled,โ€ Kinzie said, โ€œwhich will open the jail cells with one click.โ€

โ€œIfโ€”gods forbid!โ€”something like that were to happen,โ€ the queen continued, โ€œyou would find your friendsโ€™ weapons and supplies in the guard station next to the cells. And who knows? If you made your way back to this throne room while I was off preparing for my duelโ€ฆwell, as I mentioned, Arion is a very fast horse. It would be a shame if he were stolen and used for an escape.โ€

Hazel felt like sheโ€™d been plugged into a wall socket. Electricity surged through her whole body. Arionโ€ฆArion could be hers. All she had to do was rescue her friends and fight her way through an entire nation of highly trained warriors. โ€œQueen Hylla,โ€ she said, โ€œIโ€”Iโ€™m not much of a fighter.โ€

โ€œOh, there are many kinds of fighting, Hazel. I have a feeling youโ€™re quite resourceful. And if the prophecy is correct, you will help the Amazon

nation achieve prosperity. If you succeed on your quest to free Thanatos, for instanceโ€”โ€

โ€œโ€”then Otrera wouldnโ€™t come back if she were killed,โ€ Hazel said. โ€œYouโ€™d only have to defeat herโ€ฆum, every night until we succeed.โ€

The queen nodded grimly. โ€œIt seems we both have impossible tasks ahead of us.โ€

โ€œBut youโ€™re trusting me,โ€ said Hazel. โ€œAnd I trust you. Youย willย win, as many times as it takes.โ€

Hylla held out Percyโ€™s necklace and poured it into Hazelโ€™s hands.

โ€œI hope youโ€™re right,โ€ the queen said. โ€œBut the sooner you succeed the better, yes?โ€

Hazel slipped the necklace into her pocket. She shook the queenโ€™s hand, wondering if it was possible to make a friend so fastโ€”especially one who was about to send her to jail.

โ€œThis conversation never happened,โ€ Hylla told Kinzie. โ€œTake our prisoner to the cells and hand her over to Otreraโ€™s guards. And, Kinzie, be sure you leave before anything unfortunate happens. I donโ€™t want my loyal followers held accountable for a prison break.โ€

The queen smiled mischievously, and for the first time, Hazel felt jealous of Reyna. She wished thatย sheย had a sister like this.

โ€œGood-bye, Hazel Levesque,โ€ the queen said. โ€œIf we both die tonightโ€ฆ well, Iโ€™m glad I met you.โ€
