โThe experiment is a failure, but at least itโs over.โ I
sucked down the rest of my cranberry vodka. Iโd nursed it for so long all the ice had melted and it tasted like fruity water. โThank God.โ
โToo bad.โ Bridget looked disappointed. โI was looking forward to seeing Alex lose his cool.โ
โHe still can. The experiment isnโt over yet.โ Jules wagged her finger in the air.
Unease crawled down my neck. โYes, it is. We decided on four phases: sadness, disgust, happiness, and fear.โ
โThere areย fiveย phases.โ Julesโs hazel eyes sparkled with mischief. โThe last is jealousy, or did you forget?โ
โI never agreed to that!โ
We were at The Crypt, Thayerโs most popular off-campus bar, for one last hurrah before classes started Monday. Students had started trickling back, and the bar was way more packed than earlier this summer.
โBut itโs the best one,โ Jules argued. โDonโtโโ โAva.โ
I stiffened at the sound of my name said inย thatย voice. The voice that used to whisper to me at night and tell me it
โheโloved me. The voice I hadnโt heard in two months, not since he showed up outside the gallery one day in July and demanded I speak with him.
I tilted my head until hazel eyes clashed with my dark brown ones.
Liam towered over me, handsome and preppy as ever in a navy-blue polo and khakis. Heโd cut his hair, the blond strands no longer the mess of soft curls Iโd loved running my fingers through, but shorter, closer-cropped to his skull. My peripheral vision revealed my friendsโ reactions to his unexpected appearance in one sweep: nervousness on
Stellaโs face, trepidation on Bridgetโs, anger on Julesโs.
โWhat are you doing here?โ I told myself I didnโt need to be scared. We were in public, sitting smack dab in the middle of a crowded bar. I was surrounded by my friends and Booth, who eyed Liam like heโd like to dropkick the guy.
I was safe.
Still, my skin tingled with unease. I thought Liam had given up his quest to win me back, but here he was, looking at me like nothing had changed. Like I hadnโt caught him with his pants down and buried inside a strange blonde the night heโd claimed to have a โfever.โ Iโd dropped by his apartment hoping to surprise him with chicken soup and ended up being the one surprised instead.
โCan we talk?โ
โIโm busy.โ I could smell the alcohol on his breath, and I wasnโt interested in talking to a sober Liam, much less a drunk one.
โAva, please.โ
โShe said sheโs busy, asshole,โ Jules snapped.
Liam glared at her. Theyโd never gotten along. โI donโt remember speaking to you,โ he sneered.
โSee if you remember when I stick myโโ โFive minutes.โ I stood, my shoulders stiff. โWhatโโ
โAvaโโ
โAre you sureโโ
My friends all spoke at once.
I nodded. โYeah. Iโll be back in five, okay? If Iโm notโโ I glared at Liam. โYou can come looking for me with torches and pitchforks.โ Heโd hover all night unless I spoke with him, and Iโd rather get it over with.
โI have more than torches and pitchforks,โ Booth growled.
Liam flinched.
I followed him outside the bar and crossed my arms over my chest. โMake it quick.โ
โI want you to give me another chance.โ
โIโve already told you a thousand timesโno.โ
Frustration bled into his face. โBabe, itโs beenย months.ย What do you want me to do, fall to my knees and beg? Havenโt you punished me enough?โ
โItโs not about punishment.โ For someone whoโd graduated cum laude, Liam couldnโt seem to grasp such a simple concept. โItโs about the fact thatย you cheated on me.ย I donโt care how long itโs been or how sorry you are. Cheating is unacceptable, and we are not getting back together. Ever.โ
The frustration morphed into anger. โWhy? You got a new man?โ he growled. โYou have new dick and you donโt need me anymore, is that it? I never knew you were such a slut.โ
โFuck you.โ My heart pumped fast. Liam had never said such nasty things to me. Ever. โYour five minutes are up. This conversation is over.โ
I tried to leave, but he grabbed my wrist and yanked me back. It was the first time heโd laid a hand on me out of anger.
My heart was racing triple-speed now, but I forced myself to remain calm. โGet your hands off me,โ I hissed. โOr youโll regret it.โ
โWho is he?โ Liamโs eyes were wild, and I realized with a sinking stomach that he was not only drunk but high. A dangerous combination. โTell me!โ
โThereย isย no other guy, and even if there were, itโs none of your business!โ I wished Iโd brought my pepper spray. Since I hadnโt, I settled for the next best thing: kneeing him in the balls. Hard.
Liam released his hold on me and doubled over in pain. โYou bitch,โ he wheezed. โYouโโ
I didnโt wait to hear what he said next. I fled back to the safety of the bar, my pulse roaring in my ears.
I canโt believe that happened.ย Liam had never acted so out of control. Heโd been persistent and kind of douchey, but heโd never physically hurt me.
By the time I told my friends what happened and they ran outside to confront Liam over my protests, he was gone, but my queasiness remained.
You think you know someone until something happens that proves you never really knew them at all.
