Chapter no 12 – AVA

Twisted Love (Twisted, #1)

โ€œThe experiment is a failure, but at least itโ€™s over.โ€ I

sucked down the rest of my cranberry vodka. Iโ€™d nursed it for so long all the ice had melted and it tasted like fruity water. โ€œThank God.โ€

โ€œToo bad.โ€ Bridget looked disappointed. โ€œI was looking forward to seeing Alex lose his cool.โ€

โ€œHe still can. The experiment isnโ€™t over yet.โ€ Jules wagged her finger in the air.

Unease crawled down my neck. โ€œYes, it is. We decided on four phases: sadness, disgust, happiness, and fear.โ€

โ€œThere areย fiveย phases.โ€ Julesโ€™s hazel eyes sparkled with mischief. โ€œThe last is jealousy, or did you forget?โ€

โ€œI never agreed to that!โ€

We were at The Crypt, Thayerโ€™s most popular off-campus bar, for one last hurrah before classes started Monday. Students had started trickling back, and the bar was way more packed than earlier this summer.

โ€œBut itโ€™s the best one,โ€ Jules argued. โ€œDonโ€™tโ€”โ€ โ€œAva.โ€

I stiffened at the sound of my name said inย thatย voice. The voice that used to whisper to me at night and tell me it

โ€”heโ€”loved me. The voice I hadnโ€™t heard in two months, not since he showed up outside the gallery one day in July and demanded I speak with him.

I tilted my head until hazel eyes clashed with my dark brown ones.

Liam towered over me, handsome and preppy as ever in a navy-blue polo and khakis. Heโ€™d cut his hair, the blond strands no longer the mess of soft curls Iโ€™d loved running my fingers through, but shorter, closer-cropped to his skull. My peripheral vision revealed my friendsโ€™ reactions to his unexpected appearance in one sweep: nervousness on

Stellaโ€™s face, trepidation on Bridgetโ€™s, anger on Julesโ€™s.

โ€œWhat are you doing here?โ€ I told myself I didnโ€™t need to be scared. We were in public, sitting smack dab in the middle of a crowded bar. I was surrounded by my friends and Booth, who eyed Liam like heโ€™d like to dropkick the guy.

I was safe.

Still, my skin tingled with unease. I thought Liam had given up his quest to win me back, but here he was, looking at me like nothing had changed. Like I hadnโ€™t caught him with his pants down and buried inside a strange blonde the night heโ€™d claimed to have a โ€œfever.โ€ Iโ€™d dropped by his apartment hoping to surprise him with chicken soup and ended up being the one surprised instead.

โ€œCan we talk?โ€

โ€œIโ€™m busy.โ€ I could smell the alcohol on his breath, and I wasnโ€™t interested in talking to a sober Liam, much less a drunk one.

โ€œAva, please.โ€

โ€œShe said sheโ€™s busy, asshole,โ€ Jules snapped.

Liam glared at her. Theyโ€™d never gotten along. โ€œI donโ€™t remember speaking to you,โ€ he sneered.

โ€œSee if you remember when I stick myโ€”โ€ โ€œFive minutes.โ€ I stood, my shoulders stiff. โ€œWhatโ€”โ€

โ€œAvaโ€”โ€

โ€œAre you sureโ€”โ€

My friends all spoke at once.

I nodded. โ€œYeah. Iโ€™ll be back in five, okay? If Iโ€™m notโ€”โ€ I glared at Liam. โ€œYou can come looking for me with torches and pitchforks.โ€ Heโ€™d hover all night unless I spoke with him, and Iโ€™d rather get it over with.

โ€œI have more than torches and pitchforks,โ€ Booth growled.

Liam flinched.

I followed him outside the bar and crossed my arms over my chest. โ€œMake it quick.โ€

โ€œI want you to give me another chance.โ€

โ€œIโ€™ve already told you a thousand timesโ€”no.โ€

Frustration bled into his face. โ€œBabe, itโ€™s beenย months.ย What do you want me to do, fall to my knees and beg? Havenโ€™t you punished me enough?โ€

โ€œItโ€™s not about punishment.โ€ For someone whoโ€™d graduated cum laude, Liam couldnโ€™t seem to grasp such a simple concept. โ€œItโ€™s about the fact thatย you cheated on me.ย I donโ€™t care how long itโ€™s been or how sorry you are. Cheating is unacceptable, and we are not getting back together. Ever.โ€

The frustration morphed into anger. โ€œWhy? You got a new man?โ€ he growled. โ€œYou have new dick and you donโ€™t need me anymore, is that it? I never knew you were such a slut.โ€

โ€œFuck you.โ€ My heart pumped fast. Liam had never said such nasty things to me. Ever. โ€œYour five minutes are up. This conversation is over.โ€

I tried to leave, but he grabbed my wrist and yanked me back. It was the first time heโ€™d laid a hand on me out of anger.

My heart was racing triple-speed now, but I forced myself to remain calm. โ€œGet your hands off me,โ€ I hissed. โ€œOr youโ€™ll regret it.โ€

โ€œWho is he?โ€ Liamโ€™s eyes were wild, and I realized with a sinking stomach that he was not only drunk but high. A dangerous combination. โ€œTell me!โ€

โ€œThereย isย no other guy, and even if there were, itโ€™s none of your business!โ€ I wished Iโ€™d brought my pepper spray. Since I hadnโ€™t, I settled for the next best thing: kneeing him in the balls. Hard.

Liam released his hold on me and doubled over in pain. โ€œYou bitch,โ€ he wheezed. โ€œYouโ€”โ€

I didnโ€™t wait to hear what he said next. I fled back to the safety of the bar, my pulse roaring in my ears.

I canโ€™t believe that happened.ย Liam had never acted so out of control. Heโ€™d been persistent and kind of douchey, but heโ€™d never physically hurt me.

By the time I told my friends what happened and they ran outside to confront Liam over my protests, he was gone, but my queasiness remained.

You think you know someone until something happens that proves you never really knew them at all.
