Chapter no 3

I Bet You (Waylon University, #2)

โ€ŒPenelopeโ€Œ

Tension is thick as we eye each other, both of us ignoring the mess to continue our stare-down. The apron around my waist took the brunt of the water that came in my direction, but Rykerโ€™s pants are soakedโ€”only he barely seems to notice now that weโ€™re facing off.

โ€œIt was nice chatting, Ryker. Oh, and by the way, it looks like you peed yourself.โ€ I move to walk past him to grab some towels from the back, but he takes a small step, blocking me.

โ€œWait, whatโ€™s wrong?โ€ Frustration flashes over his features. โ€œLook, I never know how to ask a real girl out. Can we start over? Without all this water everywhere?โ€

Look at him. Still trying to win me over. Heโ€™s persistent, Iโ€™ll give him that. I tilt my chin up and glare at him. โ€œWhy do you even care?โ€

He sighs heavily, and he seems to gather himself as he searches for the right words. โ€œI donโ€™t knowโ€ฆmaybe itโ€™s because you take great pains to walk around me on campus. You sit on the opposite side of me in class, and that wasย beforeย you wrote that stupid article about me last year. Itโ€™s like thereโ€™s something about me that repels you.โ€

โ€œYou repel me because youโ€™re a douchebag.โ€ Not waiting to see his reaction to that, I forget about getting the towels and bend down to pick up the glasses, setting them back on the tray. My hands are shaking as I whip off my apron and use the dry parts to dab at the floor.

โ€œHere, let me help.โ€ He squats down next to me, raking the ice up into a pile and then scooping it onto the tray.

โ€œStop.โ€

โ€œNo, let me help.โ€

I pause what Iโ€™m doing and glare at him. โ€œJust quit the acting, okay? Whatever bet you and the team have going about me, forget it. It wonโ€™t work.โ€

He stops and pales, and thatโ€™s all the confirmation I need. I wasย right.

Part of me, the silly girl inside who would be flattered to have the honest attention of the most popular guy on campusโ€”even if he is a football player

โ€”wants to cry. I stuff her down in a box and throw away the key.

For half a second, I honestly thought the article I wrote didnโ€™t matter and he was being sincere. I thought he likedย me. My hands clench. I let down my

guard for half a second, and this is what happens.

I stand up. โ€œYou only came over here to talk to me for a bet.โ€ My lips flatten. โ€œJust leave me alone. Please.โ€

Heโ€™s picked up the tray and is standing now, a look of unease on his face. โ€œWait, thatโ€™s not the whole storyโ€”โ€

โ€œAnd the next time you attempt to win a bet like this, consider the feelings of the person you mess with.โ€

He swallows. โ€œPenelope, it wasnโ€™tโ€”โ€

I hold my hand up for him to shut up, and he does, his teeth tugging at his lower lip, a torn expression on his face. I flick my eyes back to Archer and company. Some of them are guffawing and chortling as they watch us, and anger tightens in my gut.

โ€œIgnore them,โ€ he says. โ€œTheyโ€™re just laughing at my pants. They knew I didnโ€™t have a chance with you, and now youโ€™ve proved it.โ€

I shake my head. โ€œI guess the bet was if you could get me to kiss you? Go out with you?โ€

He rakes a hand through his hair and stares at me. โ€œLook, I didnโ€™t mean for itโ€”โ€

โ€œWhatย was the bet?โ€

His shoulders dip. โ€œThey bet me I couldnโ€™t get you to go out with me.โ€ โ€œA date.โ€

He gives me a terse nod.

โ€œHuh. So, you actually thought you and I would go out? Even though we donโ€™t like each other?โ€

โ€œI never said I didnโ€™t like you.โ€ โ€œBut you donโ€™t,โ€ I insist.

He hesitates, the words leaving his mouth reluctantly. โ€œIt was assumed Iโ€™d stand you up, butโ€”โ€

My hands tighten. โ€œSo, your plan was for me to come over to do laundry and then you wouldnโ€™t be there?โ€ My face scrunches as I try to picture the scenario. Hurt slices through me. โ€œI have my own washer anyway, jerk.โ€

He shakes his head. โ€œI didnโ€™t have a real plan. I was just winging itโ€”โ€ โ€œYou knew exactly what you were doing and you lost, Baby Llama.ย You

lost. I hope it was worth the laugh.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m not laughing, Penelope.โ€ He frowns. โ€œI didnโ€™t mean to hurt you.โ€ โ€œOnly because you lost.โ€ Mustering up as much gumption as I have left, I

turn my back to him and march over to the football table. I put my hands on my hips and make eye contact with each player. They donโ€™t faze me. Blaze reads my face and mouthsย Iโ€™m sorry, but I brush my eyes right over him. We may know each other, but right now, heโ€™s an asshole just like the rest of them.

โ€œHe lost, boys. Ryker Voss asked me out and crashed and burned. If there was money involved, I expect my cut of whatever the amount was.

Understood?โ€

They all gape at me except for Archer. With a stare that seems to see right through my bravado, he grins. Thereโ€™s a carefree nonchalance to his stance as he shakes off the jersey chaser and stands to shake my hand. โ€œYes,ย cher. Absolutely,โ€ he murmurs. โ€œYou can have it all as far as Iโ€™m concerned.โ€ He pops the table with his hand and addresses the players. โ€œLetโ€™s go ahead and give the lady our winnings. Ryker can even it up with us later.โ€

Each player forks over a ten, and then Archer gathers up the cash and puts it in my hand. โ€œIโ€™ve never enjoyed anything as much as seeing Ryker get water dumped on him today. Thank you for that, and I hope you wonโ€™t hold this little bet against me.โ€ His gaze is a bit too lingering, and I want to wipe my hand off when he releases it.

โ€œYou can all go fuck yourselves,โ€ I say.

Archer throws back his head and laughs. โ€œYouโ€™ve got some spark to you all right.โ€

โ€œWhatever,โ€ I mutter, stuffing the money in my apron.

I give them one final hard look and then dash to the back of the restaurant, barely hanging on to my composure. My gaze darts to Ryker, standing in the corner with the tray in his hands. The glasses and ice are piled on top, and his face is expressionless, nearly granite as he watches me, and I resist the urge to flip him off. The only thing holding me back is that if my boss saw it, heโ€™d rake me over the coals. Everyone loves the football players.

So, I fly right past him and blow through the double doors of the kitchen. Without a glance at anyone, I run all the way to the pantry, where I slam the door. I fight it with everything I have, but I canโ€™t stop the hot tears that spill down my cheeks.

The infuriating thing is I donโ€™t even know why Iโ€™m so let down and disappointed by a guy I knew was a dick to begin with.
