Chapter no 14 – PERCY

The Mark of Athena (The Heroes of Olympus #3)

โ€ŒPercy had seen Frank surroundedย by cannibal ogres, facing down an unkillable giant, and even unleashing Thanatos, the god of death. But heโ€™d never seen Frank look as terrified as he did now, finding the two of them passed out in the stables.โ€Œ

โ€œWhatโ€ฆ ?โ€ Percy rubbed his eyes. โ€œOh, we just fell asleep.โ€

Frank swallowed. He was dressed in running shoes, dark cargo pants, and a Vancouver Winter Olympics T-shirt with his Roman centurion badge pinned to the neck (which seemed either sad or hopeful to Percy, now that they were renegades). Frank averted his eyes as if the sight of them together might burn him.

โ€œEveryone thinks youโ€™ve been kidnapped,โ€ he said. โ€œWeโ€™ve been scouring the ship. When Coach Hedge finds outโ€”oh, gods, youโ€™ve been hereย all night?โ€

โ€œFrank!โ€ Annabethโ€™s ears were as red as strawberries. โ€œWe just came down here to talk. We fell asleep. Accidentally. Thatโ€™sย it.โ€

โ€œKissed a couple of times,โ€ Percy said. Annabeth glared at him. โ€œNot helping!โ€

โ€œWeโ€™d betterโ€ฆโ€ Frank pointed to the stable doors. โ€œUh, weโ€™re supposed to meet for breakfast. Would you explain what you didโ€”I mean didnโ€™t do? I meanโ€ฆ I really donโ€™t want that faunโ€”I mean satyrโ€”to kill me.โ€

Frank ran.

When everyone finally gathered in the mess hall, it wasnโ€™t quite as bad as Frank had feared. Jason and Piper were mostly relieved. Leo couldnโ€™t stop grinning and muttering, โ€œClassic. Classic.โ€ Only Hazel seemed scandalized, maybe because she was from the 1940s. She kept fanning her face and wouldnโ€™t meet Percyโ€™s eyes.

Naturally, Coach Hedge went ballistic; but Percy found it hard to take the satyr seriously since he was barely five feet tall.

โ€œNever in my life!โ€ Coach bellowed, waving his bat and knocking over a plate of apples. โ€œAgainst the rules! Irresponsible!โ€

โ€œCoach,โ€ Annabeth said, โ€œit was an accident. We were talking, and we fell asleep.โ€

โ€œBesides,โ€ Percy said, โ€œyouโ€™re starting to sound like Terminus.โ€

Hedge narrowed his eyes. โ€œIs that an insult, Jackson? โ€™Cause Iโ€™llโ€”Iโ€™ll terminus you, buddy!โ€

Percy tried not to laugh. โ€œIt wonโ€™t happen again, Coach. I promise. Now, donโ€™t we have other things to discuss?โ€

Hedge fumed. โ€œFine! But Iโ€™m watching you, Jackson. And you, Annabeth Chase, I thought you had more senseโ€”โ€

Jason cleared his throat. โ€œSo grab some food, everybody. Letโ€™s get started.โ€

The meeting was like a war council with donuts. Then again, back at Camp Half-Blood they used to have their most serious discussions around the Ping- Pong table in the rec room with crackers and Cheez Whiz, so Percy felt right at home.

He told them about his dreamโ€”the twin giants planning a reception for them in an underground parking lot with rocket launchers; Nico di Angelo trapped in a bronze jar, slowly dying from asphyxiation with pomegranate seeds at his feet.

Hazel choked back a sob. โ€œNicoโ€ฆ Oh, gods. The seeds.โ€ โ€œYou know what they are?โ€ Annabeth asked.

Hazel nodded. โ€œHe showed them to me once. Theyโ€™re from our stepmotherโ€™s garden.โ€

โ€œYour stepโ€ฆ oh,โ€ Percy said. โ€œYou mean Persephone.โ€

Percy had met the wife of Hades once. She hadnโ€™t been exactly warm and

sunny. He had also been to her Underworld gardenโ€”a creepy place full of crystal trees and flowers that bloomed bloodred and ghost white.

โ€œThe seeds are a last-resort food,โ€ Hazel said. Percy could tell she was nervous, because all the silverware on the table was starting to move toward her. โ€œOnly children of Hades can eat them. Nico always kept some in case he got stuck somewhere. But if heโ€™s really imprisonedโ€”โ€

โ€œThe giants are trying to lure us,โ€ Annabeth said. โ€œTheyโ€™re assuming weโ€™ll try to rescue him.โ€

โ€œWell, theyโ€™re right!โ€ Hazel looked around the table, her confidence apparently crumbling. โ€œWonโ€™t we?โ€

โ€œYes!โ€ Coach Hedge yelled with a mouthful of napkins. โ€œItโ€™ll involve fighting, right?โ€

โ€œHazel, of course weโ€™ll help him,โ€ Frank said. โ€œBut how long do we have beforeโ€ฆ uh, I mean, how long can Nico hold out?โ€

โ€œOne seed a day,โ€ Hazel said miserably. โ€œThatโ€™s if he puts himself in a death trance.โ€

โ€œA death trance?โ€ Annabeth scowled. โ€œThat doesnโ€™t sound fun.โ€

โ€œIt keeps him from consuming all his air,โ€ Hazel said. โ€œLike hibernation, or a coma. One seed can sustain him one day, barely.โ€

โ€œAnd he has five seeds left,โ€ Percy said. โ€œThatโ€™s five days, including today. The giants must have planned it that way, so weโ€™d have to arrive by July first. Assuming Nico is hidden somewhere in Romeโ€”โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s not much time,โ€ Piper summed up. She put her hand on Hazelโ€™s shoulder. โ€œWeโ€™ll find him. At least we know what the lines of the prophecy mean now. โ€˜Twins snuff out the angelโ€™s breath, who holds the key to endless death.โ€™ Your brotherโ€™s last name: di Angelo.ย Angeloย is Italian for โ€˜angel.โ€™โ€

โ€œOh, gods,โ€ Hazel muttered. โ€œNicoโ€ฆโ€

Percy stared at his jelly donut. He had a rocky history with Nico di Angelo. The guy had once tricked him into visiting Hadesโ€™s palace, and Percy had ended up in a cell. But most of the time, Nico sided with the good guys. He certainly didnโ€™t deserve slow suffocation in a bronze jar, and Percy couldnโ€™t stand seeing Hazel in pain.

โ€œWeโ€™ll rescue him,โ€ he promised her. โ€œWeย haveย to. The prophecy says he holds the key to endless death.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s right,โ€ Piper said encouragingly. โ€œHazel, your brother went searching for the Doors of Death in the Underworld, right? He mustโ€™ve found them.โ€

โ€œHe can tell us where the doors are,โ€ Percy said, โ€œand how to close them.โ€ Hazel took a deep breath. โ€œYes. Good.โ€

โ€œUhโ€ฆโ€ Leo shifted in his chair. โ€œOne thing. The giants are expecting us to do this, right? So weโ€™re walking into a trap?โ€

Hazel looked at Leo like heโ€™d made a rude gesture. โ€œWe have no choice!โ€ โ€œDonโ€™t get me wrong, Hazel. Itโ€™s just that your brother, Nicoโ€ฆ he knew

about both camps, right?โ€ โ€œWell, yes,โ€ Hazel said.

โ€œHeโ€™s been going back and forth,โ€ Leo said, โ€œand he didnโ€™t tell either side.โ€

Jason sat forward, his expression grim. โ€œYouโ€™re wondering if we can trust the guy. So am I.โ€

Hazel shot to her feet. โ€œI donโ€™t believe this. Heโ€™s myย brother. He brought me back from the Underworld, and you donโ€™t want to help him?โ€

Frank put his hand on her shoulder. โ€œNobodyโ€™s saying that.โ€ He glared at Leo. โ€œNobody hadย betterย be saying that.โ€

Leo blinked. โ€œLook, guys. All I mean isโ€”โ€

โ€œHazel,โ€ Jason said. โ€œLeo is raising a fair point. I remember Nico from Camp Jupiter. Now I find out he also visited Camp Half-Blood. That does strike me asโ€ฆ well, a little shady. Do we really know where his loyalties lie? We just have to be careful.โ€

Hazelโ€™s arms shook. A silver platter zoomed toward her and hit the wall to her left, splattering scrambled eggs. โ€œYouโ€ฆ theย greatย Jason Graceโ€ฆ the praetor I looked up to. You were supposed to be so fair, such a good leader. And now youโ€ฆโ€ Hazel stomped her foot and stormed out of the mess hall.

โ€œHazel!โ€ Leo called after her. โ€œAh, jeez. I shouldโ€”โ€

โ€œYouโ€™ve done enough,โ€ Frank growled. He got up to follow her, but Piper gestured for him to wait.

โ€œGive her time,โ€ Piper advised. Then she frowned at Leo and Jason. โ€œYou guys, thatย wasย pretty cold.โ€

Jason looked shocked. โ€œCold? Iโ€™m just being cautious!โ€

โ€œHer brother is dying,โ€ Piper said. โ€œIโ€™ll go talk to her,โ€ Frank insisted.

โ€œNo,โ€ Piper said. โ€œLet her cool down first. Trust me on this. Iโ€™ll go check on her in a few minutes.โ€

โ€œButโ€ฆโ€ Frank huffed like an irritated bear. โ€œFine. Iโ€™ll wait.โ€ From up above came a whirring sound like a large drill.

โ€œThatโ€™s Festus,โ€ Leo said. โ€œIโ€™ve got him on autopilot, but we must be nearing Atlanta. Iโ€™ll have to get up thereโ€ฆ uh, assuming we know where to land.โ€

Everyone turned to Percy.

Jason raised an eyebrow. โ€œYouโ€™re Captain Salt Water. Any ideas from the expert?โ€

Was that resentment in his voice? Percy wondered if Jason was secretly miffed about the duel in Kansas. Jason had joked about it, but Percy figured that they both harbored a little grudge. You couldnโ€™t put two demigods in a fight and not have them wonder who was stronger.

โ€œIโ€™m not sure,โ€ he admitted. โ€œSomewhere central, high up so we can get a good view of the city. Maybe a park with some woods? We donโ€™t want to land a warship in the middle of downtown. I doubt even the Mist could cover up something that huge.โ€

Leo nodded. โ€œOn it.โ€ He raced for the stairs.

Frank settled back in his chair uneasily. Percy felt bad for him. On the trip to Alaska, he had watched Hazel and Frank grow close. He knew how protective Frank felt toward her. He also noticed the baleful look Frank was giving Leo. He decided it might be a good idea to get Frank off the ship for a while.

โ€œWhen we land, Iโ€™ll scout around in Atlanta,โ€ Percy said. โ€œFrank, I could use your help.โ€

โ€œYou mean turn into a dragon again? Honestly, Percy, I donโ€™t want to spend the whole quest being everyoneโ€™s flying taxi.โ€

โ€œNo,โ€ Percy said. โ€œI want you with me because youโ€™ve got the blood of Poseidon. Maybe you can help me figure out where to find salt water. Besides, youโ€™re good in a fight.โ€

That seemed to make Frank feel a little better. โ€œSure. I guess.โ€

โ€œGreat,โ€ Percy said. โ€œWe should take one more. Annabethโ€”โ€ โ€œOh, no!โ€ Coach Hedge barked. โ€œYoung lady, you areย grounded.โ€

Annabeth stared at him like he was speaking a foreign language. โ€œExcuse me?โ€

โ€œYou and Jackson are not goingย anywhereย together!โ€ Hedge insisted. He glared at Percy, daring him to mouth off. โ€œIโ€™llย go with Frank and Mr. Sneaky Jackson. The rest of you guard the ship and make sure Annabeth doesnโ€™t break any more rules!โ€

Wonderful, Percy thought. A boysโ€™ day out with Frank and a bloodthirsty satyr, to find salt water in a landlocked city.

โ€œThis,โ€ he said, โ€œis going to beย soย much fun.โ€
