โPercy had seen Frank surroundedย by cannibal ogres, facing down an unkillable giant, and even unleashing Thanatos, the god of death. But heโd never seen Frank look as terrified as he did now, finding the two of them passed out in the stables.โ
โWhatโฆ ?โ Percy rubbed his eyes. โOh, we just fell asleep.โ
Frank swallowed. He was dressed in running shoes, dark cargo pants, and a Vancouver Winter Olympics T-shirt with his Roman centurion badge pinned to the neck (which seemed either sad or hopeful to Percy, now that they were renegades). Frank averted his eyes as if the sight of them together might burn him.
โEveryone thinks youโve been kidnapped,โ he said. โWeโve been scouring the ship. When Coach Hedge finds outโoh, gods, youโve been hereย all night?โ
โFrank!โ Annabethโs ears were as red as strawberries. โWe just came down here to talk. We fell asleep. Accidentally. Thatโsย it.โ
โKissed a couple of times,โ Percy said. Annabeth glared at him. โNot helping!โ
โWeโd betterโฆโ Frank pointed to the stable doors. โUh, weโre supposed to meet for breakfast. Would you explain what you didโI mean didnโt do? I meanโฆ I really donโt want that faunโI mean satyrโto kill me.โ
Frank ran.
When everyone finally gathered in the mess hall, it wasnโt quite as bad as Frank had feared. Jason and Piper were mostly relieved. Leo couldnโt stop grinning and muttering, โClassic. Classic.โ Only Hazel seemed scandalized, maybe because she was from the 1940s. She kept fanning her face and wouldnโt meet Percyโs eyes.
Naturally, Coach Hedge went ballistic; but Percy found it hard to take the satyr seriously since he was barely five feet tall.
โNever in my life!โ Coach bellowed, waving his bat and knocking over a plate of apples. โAgainst the rules! Irresponsible!โ
โCoach,โ Annabeth said, โit was an accident. We were talking, and we fell asleep.โ
โBesides,โ Percy said, โyouโre starting to sound like Terminus.โ
Hedge narrowed his eyes. โIs that an insult, Jackson? โCause IโllโIโll terminus you, buddy!โ
Percy tried not to laugh. โIt wonโt happen again, Coach. I promise. Now, donโt we have other things to discuss?โ
Hedge fumed. โFine! But Iโm watching you, Jackson. And you, Annabeth Chase, I thought you had more senseโโ
Jason cleared his throat. โSo grab some food, everybody. Letโs get started.โ
The meeting was like a war council with donuts. Then again, back at Camp Half-Blood they used to have their most serious discussions around the Ping- Pong table in the rec room with crackers and Cheez Whiz, so Percy felt right at home.
He told them about his dreamโthe twin giants planning a reception for them in an underground parking lot with rocket launchers; Nico di Angelo trapped in a bronze jar, slowly dying from asphyxiation with pomegranate seeds at his feet.
Hazel choked back a sob. โNicoโฆ Oh, gods. The seeds.โ โYou know what they are?โ Annabeth asked.
Hazel nodded. โHe showed them to me once. Theyโre from our stepmotherโs garden.โ
โYour stepโฆ oh,โ Percy said. โYou mean Persephone.โ
Percy had met the wife of Hades once. She hadnโt been exactly warm and
sunny. He had also been to her Underworld gardenโa creepy place full of crystal trees and flowers that bloomed bloodred and ghost white.
โThe seeds are a last-resort food,โ Hazel said. Percy could tell she was nervous, because all the silverware on the table was starting to move toward her. โOnly children of Hades can eat them. Nico always kept some in case he got stuck somewhere. But if heโs really imprisonedโโ
โThe giants are trying to lure us,โ Annabeth said. โTheyโre assuming weโll try to rescue him.โ
โWell, theyโre right!โ Hazel looked around the table, her confidence apparently crumbling. โWonโt we?โ
โYes!โ Coach Hedge yelled with a mouthful of napkins. โItโll involve fighting, right?โ
โHazel, of course weโll help him,โ Frank said. โBut how long do we have beforeโฆ uh, I mean, how long can Nico hold out?โ
โOne seed a day,โ Hazel said miserably. โThatโs if he puts himself in a death trance.โ
โA death trance?โ Annabeth scowled. โThat doesnโt sound fun.โ
โIt keeps him from consuming all his air,โ Hazel said. โLike hibernation, or a coma. One seed can sustain him one day, barely.โ
โAnd he has five seeds left,โ Percy said. โThatโs five days, including today. The giants must have planned it that way, so weโd have to arrive by July first. Assuming Nico is hidden somewhere in Romeโโ
โThatโs not much time,โ Piper summed up. She put her hand on Hazelโs shoulder. โWeโll find him. At least we know what the lines of the prophecy mean now. โTwins snuff out the angelโs breath, who holds the key to endless death.โ Your brotherโs last name: di Angelo.ย Angeloย is Italian for โangel.โโ
โOh, gods,โ Hazel muttered. โNicoโฆโ
Percy stared at his jelly donut. He had a rocky history with Nico di Angelo. The guy had once tricked him into visiting Hadesโs palace, and Percy had ended up in a cell. But most of the time, Nico sided with the good guys. He certainly didnโt deserve slow suffocation in a bronze jar, and Percy couldnโt stand seeing Hazel in pain.
โWeโll rescue him,โ he promised her. โWeย haveย to. The prophecy says he holds the key to endless death.โ
โThatโs right,โ Piper said encouragingly. โHazel, your brother went searching for the Doors of Death in the Underworld, right? He mustโve found them.โ
โHe can tell us where the doors are,โ Percy said, โand how to close them.โ Hazel took a deep breath. โYes. Good.โ
โUhโฆโ Leo shifted in his chair. โOne thing. The giants are expecting us to do this, right? So weโre walking into a trap?โ
Hazel looked at Leo like heโd made a rude gesture. โWe have no choice!โ โDonโt get me wrong, Hazel. Itโs just that your brother, Nicoโฆ he knew
about both camps, right?โ โWell, yes,โ Hazel said.
โHeโs been going back and forth,โ Leo said, โand he didnโt tell either side.โ
Jason sat forward, his expression grim. โYouโre wondering if we can trust the guy. So am I.โ
Hazel shot to her feet. โI donโt believe this. Heโs myย brother. He brought me back from the Underworld, and you donโt want to help him?โ
Frank put his hand on her shoulder. โNobodyโs saying that.โ He glared at Leo. โNobody hadย betterย be saying that.โ
Leo blinked. โLook, guys. All I mean isโโ
โHazel,โ Jason said. โLeo is raising a fair point. I remember Nico from Camp Jupiter. Now I find out he also visited Camp Half-Blood. That does strike me asโฆ well, a little shady. Do we really know where his loyalties lie? We just have to be careful.โ
Hazelโs arms shook. A silver platter zoomed toward her and hit the wall to her left, splattering scrambled eggs. โYouโฆ theย greatย Jason Graceโฆ the praetor I looked up to. You were supposed to be so fair, such a good leader. And now youโฆโ Hazel stomped her foot and stormed out of the mess hall.
โHazel!โ Leo called after her. โAh, jeez. I shouldโโ
โYouโve done enough,โ Frank growled. He got up to follow her, but Piper gestured for him to wait.
โGive her time,โ Piper advised. Then she frowned at Leo and Jason. โYou guys, thatย wasย pretty cold.โ
Jason looked shocked. โCold? Iโm just being cautious!โ
โHer brother is dying,โ Piper said. โIโll go talk to her,โ Frank insisted.
โNo,โ Piper said. โLet her cool down first. Trust me on this. Iโll go check on her in a few minutes.โ
โButโฆโ Frank huffed like an irritated bear. โFine. Iโll wait.โ From up above came a whirring sound like a large drill.
โThatโs Festus,โ Leo said. โIโve got him on autopilot, but we must be nearing Atlanta. Iโll have to get up thereโฆ uh, assuming we know where to land.โ
Everyone turned to Percy.
Jason raised an eyebrow. โYouโre Captain Salt Water. Any ideas from the expert?โ
Was that resentment in his voice? Percy wondered if Jason was secretly miffed about the duel in Kansas. Jason had joked about it, but Percy figured that they both harbored a little grudge. You couldnโt put two demigods in a fight and not have them wonder who was stronger.
โIโm not sure,โ he admitted. โSomewhere central, high up so we can get a good view of the city. Maybe a park with some woods? We donโt want to land a warship in the middle of downtown. I doubt even the Mist could cover up something that huge.โ
Leo nodded. โOn it.โ He raced for the stairs.
Frank settled back in his chair uneasily. Percy felt bad for him. On the trip to Alaska, he had watched Hazel and Frank grow close. He knew how protective Frank felt toward her. He also noticed the baleful look Frank was giving Leo. He decided it might be a good idea to get Frank off the ship for a while.
โWhen we land, Iโll scout around in Atlanta,โ Percy said. โFrank, I could use your help.โ
โYou mean turn into a dragon again? Honestly, Percy, I donโt want to spend the whole quest being everyoneโs flying taxi.โ
โNo,โ Percy said. โI want you with me because youโve got the blood of Poseidon. Maybe you can help me figure out where to find salt water. Besides, youโre good in a fight.โ
That seemed to make Frank feel a little better. โSure. I guess.โ
โGreat,โ Percy said. โWe should take one more. Annabethโโ โOh, no!โ Coach Hedge barked. โYoung lady, you areย grounded.โ
Annabeth stared at him like he was speaking a foreign language. โExcuse me?โ
โYou and Jackson are not goingย anywhereย together!โ Hedge insisted. He glared at Percy, daring him to mouth off. โIโllย go with Frank and Mr. Sneaky Jackson. The rest of you guard the ship and make sure Annabeth doesnโt break any more rules!โ
Wonderful, Percy thought. A boysโ day out with Frank and a bloodthirsty satyr, to find salt water in a landlocked city.
โThis,โ he said, โis going to beย soย much fun.โ
