Chapter no 37 – Grace

You Shouldn't Have Come Here

I carried a glass of lemonade and the last book I intended on reading out to the porch.ย e sun was set high in the sky, its rays scorching the dry grass. Taking a seat in the rocking chair, I placed the lemonade on the table beside me and

ipped the book open to page one. After Calvin left, I laid in bed for a while thinking about how I could get through the next two days. I still had a soft spot for him but I was trying to harden that area because I knew something wasnโ€™t right with Calvin, and maybe thatโ€™s why I was captivated by him. Broken people were drawn to broken people.

โ€œWhatcha reading?โ€

Albert stood just outside the front door, carrying a beer and a crooked smile. I rolled my eyes and refocused my attention on the page.

His heavy steps grew louder as he ambled toward me. Although he was

large, he was old and mostly drunk, so I gured I could, at the very least, outrun him if need be. Albert took a seat in the rocking chair beside me, slowly rocking back and forth.

โ€œMy memory ainโ€™t the best, but I think I owe you an apology,โ€ he said. I simply nodded.

โ€œIโ€™m sorry. Iโ€™m not much of a man but my word is pretty solid. It wonโ€™t happen again, and honestly, it was an accident.โ€ He gulped his beer. โ€œI may have a lot of demons, but hurting women isnโ€™t one of them.โ€ Albert raised his eyebrow over his glass.

โ€œDemons?โ€ I asked.

โ€œWe all have them. Even you, Iโ€™m sure.โ€ โ€œYeah,โ€ I said, ipping a page.

โ€œSome people are just better at hiding them,โ€ he said.ย e chair creaked

with each rock.

I looked at him, my eyes skimming over his weathered skin. A silver medical bracelet hung loosely on his wristโ€”just a sick, drunk old man, thatโ€™s what Albert was.

โ€œWhatโ€™s that for?โ€ I motioned to his piece of jewelry.

He glanced down, holding his hand out. โ€œOh, that.โ€ย e sunlight re ected o of the metal. โ€œList of things I canโ€™t have. Like I said, I got a lot of demons.

ings I canโ€™t have and things I have too much of.โ€ He chuckled while he held up his beer. โ€œIโ€™m what Darwin would call โ€˜not natureโ€™s winner.โ€™โ€

I let on a small smile. โ€œWhat canโ€™t you have?โ€

โ€œShell sh, nuts, bees, eggs, strawberries. You name it. I canโ€™t have it.ย atโ€™s why my diet is a steady stream of red meat and booze. And thatโ€™s just ne by me.โ€ Albert chuckled again. He set his empty bottle on the table beside him.

โ€œWhat brought you here?โ€ I closed up my book and gave him my full attention.

โ€œA lot of bad decisions over a lifetime, I suppose. But sometimes after trying

to always take the road less traveled, ya just go where itโ€™s easiest, ya know?โ€ He glanced over at me.

โ€œI think I know what youโ€™re saying.โ€

โ€œWhat about you? Why you here?โ€ he asked, bringing the beer bottle back to his lips. He clearly forgot it was empty.

โ€œStill taking the road less traveled, I guess.โ€

He sucked on air and then pulled the bottle from his mouth. โ€œStay on it because it eventually runs out.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re not so bad, Albert.โ€

He and I werenโ€™t so di erent after all. He too traveled alone, had his own vices to deal with, and was forever searching for the things that kept life

interesting.

โ€œIโ€™m not so good either.โ€ He smirked, holding up his beer. โ€œIโ€™ma get me another one of these.โ€ Several of his bones creaked and cracked as he got to his feet. โ€œYou want one?โ€

โ€œYeah.โ€ I nodded.

He shu ed down the porch, disappearing inside the house. No more than a moment later, Calvinโ€™s truck rolled up with a police vehicle following closely behind. I knew this place was trouble. I felt it as soon as I stepped foot here.
