Chapter no 35 – Grace

You Shouldn't Have Come Here
No data was found
I needed to get out of here. Away from this ranch, this townโ€”hell, the entire state of Wyoming. Charlotte was a serious problem, and then there was the sheriff and the missing woman. Could Calvin have been involved? That changed everything. I quickly packed most of my things, preparing for a possible escape. Without a working car or phone, I had no idea how Iโ€™d leave. I could steal Calvinโ€™s truck or try the house phoneโ€”if it even worked. I hadnโ€™t heard it ring since I arrived. A new plan was necessary. Maybe the best approach was to act as if everything was fine, at least until my car was fixed.

A knock on the door broke my train of thought. โ€œCan I come in?โ€ Calvin asked.

I sat on the bed and grabbed a book from the nightstand, pretending to read. โ€œYeah.โ€

The door opened, and Calvin stepped in, holding that ridiculous teddy bear. I had to resist the urge to rip its head off.

โ€œThis was on the couch.โ€ He sat on the bed and handed it to me. I tossed it aside.

Calvin hung his head. โ€œIโ€™m sorry I didnโ€™t tell you about Charlotte. It really was a one-time thing. I was just feeling sorry for myself, and she was there. One thing led to another.โ€ He shrugged. โ€œItโ€™s no excuse. I should have told you.โ€

He rested his hand on the blanket, just above my thigh. I nearly shuddered but forced myself to take slow, calming breaths.

โ€œWhat else are you lying about?โ€ I studied his face. I knew a few things he had been dishonest about. Would he fess up to them? Or would he keep lying?

โ€œNothing, I swear.โ€ Lie.

He exhaled sharply.

โ€œShe told me she slept with Joe.โ€ Calvin glanced over at me. โ€œLast night after the barbecue.โ€

I knew he was only telling me this so Iโ€™d feel sorry for him. I didnโ€™t. But

why had Charlotte implied that Joe was dangerous? If he truly was, she wouldnโ€™t have slept with him. Right? Or maybe she was that crazy. Crazy enough to sleep with a potentially dangerous man just to try to make Calvin jealous.

I grabbed the glass of water from my nightstand and took a sip.ย ere was

shame in his eyes, but there was also anger. Where was the kindness I had seen days before? He moved his hand up and down, stroking my thigh beneath the blanket, trying to comfort meโ€”but there was nothing comforting about this.

โ€œI know youโ€™re mad, and you have every right to be. Iโ€™m sorry. I donโ€™t care about any of them, Charlotte, Joe, Betty. I only care about you, and I want to make this work,โ€ he said.

Calvin studied my face, waiting for me to say something, almost willing me to speak. Sometimes saying nothing was more powerful than speaking at all.

โ€œI love you, Grace Evans.ย ese arenโ€™t the best circumstances to tell you this, but I do. Iโ€™ve fallen in love with you.โ€ Parts of his face twitched. My silence was infuriating him, but he was trying his best to hide the anger. His best wasnโ€™t good enough.

When I didnโ€™t speak, he cleared his throat.

โ€œAnd I donโ€™t want you to say it back. I just wanted you to know how I felt.โ€ He stood from the bed and walked to the door.

Before he icked the light o , he smiled and said, โ€œGood night, Grace.โ€

Calvin leaned against the doorframe, waiting for me to respond. After a few

moments of silence, he closed the door. But I knew he was standing on the other side. Completely still, like a statue. It was minutes before his shadow

nally disappeared, his steps loud and steady, clomping down the hall. I sank

deep into my pillows and pulled the covers up to my chin. โ€œGoodbye, Calvin,โ€ I whispered to the dark, quiet room.

My eyes shot open when I felt part of the mattress sink in. I didnโ€™t know what time it was.ย e room was pitch-black so I assumed late. An arm fell across me as I lay on my side. His body spooned me and pulled me closer to him. I considered pushing Calvin out of my bed, but I was in too vulnerable of a position. What if it brought out that anger he was having trouble hiding? I breathed in through my nose, but stopped when I noticed something was amiss. Calvin didnโ€™t smell like Jack Danielโ€™s.

I ew out of bed, shouting and screaming.ย e lights icked on. Calvin stood in the doorframe wearing only a pair of boxers. In bed laid Albert. He sat up, disheveled and drunk. His eyes were barely open.

โ€œWhatโ€™s going on?โ€ Albertโ€™s speech was slurred. โ€œYouโ€™re in my fucking bed,โ€ I yelled.

Calvin ran to my side and pointed at Albert. โ€œGet out of her bed!โ€

e old man looked puzzled. He shu ed out of the bed, falling into the wall just as he got to his feet. โ€œMust have got confused.โ€

โ€œSorry โ€™bout that, little lady.โ€ Albert tipped an imaginary hat and stumbled toward the door, waving his hand as he staggered out of the room. Another door creaked open and then closed with a slam.

I pushed Calvin away from me. โ€œI want a goddamn lock on my door!โ€

He put his hands up and nodded. โ€œOf course. Whatever you want.โ€ โ€œHe needs to leave,โ€ I said.

Calvin rubbed his eyes. โ€œI canโ€™t kick him out right now. Itโ€™s the middle of

the night. Iโ€™m sure it was an accident. Heโ€™s old and drunk.โ€

โ€œAn accident? You didnโ€™t see the way he was looking at me.โ€ I shuddered. โ€œYou promised Iโ€™d be safe here.โ€

โ€œI know. Iโ€™m sorry.โ€ Calvin put his hands on my arms. โ€œIโ€™ll install a lock tomorrow and see if I can get him put up somewhere else.โ€

He looked into my eyes, waiting for an answer.

I shrugged his hands o of me and turned away from him, sliding back into the bed. โ€œClose the door when you leave,โ€ I said, yanking the covers up past my shoulders.

Calvin hesitated for a moment and sighed. โ€œOkay,โ€ he nally said. โ€œSleep well, Grace.โ€ He icked o the light and closed the door, lingering on the other side of it once again. At some point, I must have fallen asleep but I never heard his footsteps walk away. I think he stood there all night.
