Chapter no 32 – Calvin

You Shouldn't Have Come Here

I pulled my truck into a parking spot in front of Bettyโ€™s Boutique and grabbed the empty cake pan from the passenger seat. Only a few people walked the downtown area because it was still early in the day. I exchanged greetings with them as I made my way inside.

โ€œHey, sweetheart. To what do I owe the pleasure?โ€ Betty asked, standing from her seat behind the register.ย e store was empty, another slow day for business.

I held up the cake pan. โ€œJust returning this,โ€ I said, setting it down on the counter.

Betty came around and wrapped her arms around me, pulling me in for a tight hug. โ€œHow ya doing today?โ€

โ€œNot great.โ€

She took a few steps back and looked me up and down. Her brows pinched together. โ€œWhatโ€™s wrong, Calvin?โ€

I ambled around the store, glancing at some of the menโ€™s clothes. I didnโ€™t really need anything, just needed to talk. โ€œA mountain lion nearly attacked Grace this morning.โ€

Bettyโ€™s eyes widened, and her hand sprung to her mouth. โ€œNearly?โ€

I nodded. โ€œYep. Shot and killed the thing just as it was coming at her.โ€

โ€œOh dear,โ€ she gasped. โ€œLucky you know how to shoot. Must have been quite the scare for her.โ€

It wasnโ€™t the rst time Iโ€™d shot an animal, and I knew it wouldnโ€™t be the last.

I pulled a red-and-black annel shirt from a stu ed rack and held it up. โ€œGrace is real shaken up.โ€ I put the shirt back and continued ipping through a few others.

Betty looked as though she wanted to say something but was holding back.

Her mouth closed and opened and closed again. โ€œWhat?โ€ I asked.

She waved her hand at me. โ€œOh, nothing.โ€ โ€œGo on and say it.โ€

โ€œWell, in my experience mountain lions go for easy prey, the weak.ย at girl

donโ€™t belong here and even nature is trying to tell you that.โ€ She shook her head.

โ€œย atโ€™s a strange thing to say, Betty.โ€

โ€œShe ainโ€™t built for Wyoming is all Iโ€™m saying.โ€ She raised her chin and shrugged.

โ€œI donโ€™t think I am either.โ€

โ€œYou are, Calvin.ย at girl has gotten in your head like brain-eating amoeba. You ainโ€™t thinking right.โ€

I cocked my head. โ€œGrace has done nothing wrong.โ€

I was tired of the way people were treating her, and I could see why she was acting so strange now. Iโ€™d be the same way.

โ€œI just have a funny feeling about her,โ€ Betty said.

โ€œWell, maybe that funny feeling is because you havenโ€™t lled your prescription in the last two months.โ€

I didnโ€™t mean to say it. It just came out. When Betty was o her meds, she was the one not seeing things right.

Her mouth dropped open but she quickly closed it, pursing her lips into a thin line. She narrowed her eyes at me. โ€œWho told you that?โ€

โ€œย at doesnโ€™t matter. Why havenโ€™t you been taking your pills?โ€ โ€œBecause I donโ€™t need them.โ€

โ€œYou clearly do. Youโ€™re paranoid. First about the bees and now about

Grace.โ€

I took a few steps toward the counter.

Betty folded her arms in front of her chest. โ€œI think you should take a hard look in the mirror, Calvin. Sheโ€™s changing you. Youโ€™re smarter than this, so donโ€™t go losing your head for some girl.โ€

โ€œSheโ€™s not just some girl,โ€ I sco ed.

Betty shook her head like a parent whoโ€™d been disappointed by their child. โ€œAfter she leaves, youโ€™ll start seeing things a little more clearly.โ€

โ€œSheโ€™s not leaving. I want her to stay.โ€

โ€œOh, Calvin.โ€ She placed a hand on each of my cheeks and pulled me in, planting a kiss on the top of my head like she used to do when I was a young boy. โ€œYouโ€™re a fool. Youโ€™re a damn fool.โ€

If she only knew. I pulled away, letting her hands fall to her sides. She frowned at me.

โ€œI really hope you start taking your medication again. You know what

happens when you donโ€™t.โ€

She twisted up her lips and started straightening up random things around the store, busying herself. โ€œSheri stopped in today, asking about you and a missing woman.โ€

I let out a sigh. โ€œYeah, he stopped over at the ranch earlier and a few days

ago too. What did you tell him?โ€

โ€œย at Iโ€™ve never seen that woman.โ€ Betty straightened a row of cowboy boots, ensuring each was in line.

โ€œWhat did he ask about me?โ€ I raised my chin, my eyes following her as she moseyed around the store.

โ€œJust wanted to know more about you and the ranch. Apparently, this girl

was supposed to stay with you for a few days.โ€

โ€œYeah, and I told him she never showed up.โ€ I felt my jaw tighten. Betty wouldnโ€™t even look at me. I couldnโ€™t tell if it was because she couldnโ€™t or she wouldnโ€™t, and there was a di erence.

โ€œHim coming around is going to screw things up with Grace.โ€

โ€œI think thatโ€™s the least of your worries. In three days, Calvin, you better let

that girl leave.โ€ Betty didnโ€™t look at me or say another word. She just walked to the back of the store and disappeared into the storage room.
