Chapter no 47

The Reappearance of Rachel Price

Carter was on her knees. Rachel on her back. Bel, her feet.

Carter screamed into her hands, trapping it there, rebounding into her.ย โ€œCarter!โ€ย Bel closed the distance, crashing to her knees. She wrapped

her arms around Carter, held her head until the scream gave way.ย โ€œTheyโ€™re gone,โ€ย Carter cried, voice echoing back through Belโ€™s ribs.

Rachel stood up, shakily, resting her weight on her other ankle. She picked up theย ๏ฌ‚ashlight Charlie had dropped, the silver beam in her hands now, lighting the way. She limped toward the edge, where Charlie went over. Bel joined her mom, feetย ๏ฌrm, as Rachel pointed the light down, crags of rock sticking out like teeth below. The light didnโ€™t reach the bottom.

โ€œThey couldnโ€™t survive that fall,โ€ย Rachel said, like she didnโ€™t dare believe it herself, quiet, listening for any sound that would prove her wrong.

โ€œI killed them?โ€ย Carter said.

โ€œNo, Carter.โ€ย Rachel turned back to her, bent low, pulling up her chin.ย โ€œYou saved my life.โ€

โ€œI killed them.โ€ย Carter balled herย ๏ฌsts, pressed them into her eyes.ย โ€œI pushed them over. Dadโ€™s gone. But heโ€™s not my dad, is he? Charlie is. Was. Fuck.โ€

Bel sat beside Carter, nudging her elbow, letting her know she was right here.

Rachelโ€™s eyes widened, glittering again.ย โ€œCarter, you know?โ€ย she said.ย โ€œThat Iโ€™m yourโ€ฆโ€

โ€œYes,โ€ย Carter sni๏ฌ€ed, stars in her eyes too, from theย ๏ฌ‚ashlight. Rachelโ€™s lips parted, dropped open.ย โ€œHow do you know, sweetie?โ€

โ€œI guess I just sort of knew. Felt it. All the ways we were similar, even though we werenโ€™t blood-related, just my aunt by marriage. How nice you were to me, how much you wanted to get to know me. I thought it thatย ๏ฌrst time you picked me up from school, when I helped you with your phone. Or really, I thought,ย โ€˜Isnโ€™t Bel lucky, to have a mom like you.โ€™ย And how Iโ€™m not at all like my mom, and how weird she is with me and needles, wouldnโ€™t let me get a blood test, even when the doctor said. I wanted it to be true, somehow, even though it was impossible. I ordered two kits from AncestryDNA the next day, told my dad it was dancing stu๏ฌ€. Fuck. Not my dad. U-uncle, I guess.โ€ย Carter stared out, beyond Rachel, over the empty edge, where he had disappeared too.ย โ€œI did one on me, one on Bel.โ€

Bel blinked.ย โ€œWhat? When?โ€

โ€œI didnโ€™t want to tell you, in case I was wrong. And you were so wrapped up in Rachel, trying to prove she was lying, that she was bad. You wouldnโ€™t have believed me. You were asleep. I did the cheek swab.โ€

Bel remembered now; the morning Carter woke her by poking her in the mouth. The same morning Bel woke up toย ๏ฌnd that her dad was missing. It seemed a lifetime ago now, that day, that version of her.

โ€œBelโ€™s results came through two days ago, didnโ€™t tell me anything,โ€ย Carter said, looking up at Rachel.ย โ€œBut mine came this evening, just before Grandpaโ€™s dinner. It said that me and Bel were full genetic sisters, that we shared both the same parents.โ€ย She blinked, a tear sliding down the ridge of her nose.ย โ€œWhich means youโ€™re my mom, and Uncle Charlie isโ€ฆwasโ€ฆโ€ย She left it hanging there, his name disappearing with her breath.

Bel wiped the tear before it fell over the edge of Carterโ€™s nose. Looked into the eyes of her little sister. Carter knew before she had. The thing she needed to talk to Bel about on the stairs. It was important, sheโ€™d said. Bel

should have listened.ย Take care of your sister for me,ย her mom said, when she thought she was going to die.ย I know you always have.ย Bel took Carterโ€™s hand, clammy and bony against her own.ย My baby.ย Theyโ€™d always been sisters, Carter taking care of Bel just as much, even when she didnโ€™t want to see it.

Carter saved Rachel, and sheโ€™d saved Bel too.

โ€œHow did youย ๏ฌnd us?โ€ย Bel glanced over the lookout, at the tiny ant- town beyond.

โ€œI saw what the note said at Grandpaโ€™s house, Rachelโ€™s message, before Dadโ€”J-Je๏ฌ€ย took it. He told me to stay, clean up the books. But I waited for him to leave, waited longer, then I left too. Your bike was out front, Bel. I got to the yard, couldnโ€™t remember where the gap in the fence was, went too far. But I saw you both, running to the car. Then I saw Dad and Charlie, coming after you, chasing you. What Charlie had in his hands. So I followed them, through the trees. I thought he was going to kill you. He was about to kill you. Iโ€™m sorry.โ€ย She dropped her head.

Rachel picked it back up,ย ๏ฌnger under her chin.ย โ€œYou have nothing to be sorry for. You saved me from him, Carter. It doesnโ€™t matter that he was your father, he wasnโ€™t your family. That man was not worth saving.โ€

โ€œWhat about Daโ€”J-Je๏ฌ€?โ€ย she cried, more tears than Bel could catch.ย โ€œYou didnโ€™t push Je๏ฌ€.โ€ย Rachelโ€™s eyes were both hard and soft.ย โ€œCharlie

pulled him over. You did not kill Je๏ฌ€.โ€ โ€œBut he wouldnโ€™t be dead, if Iโ€”โ€

โ€œJe๏ฌ€ย made his choice,โ€ย Bel said.ย โ€œHe set Charlie free. He made his choice.โ€

And that was true, but heโ€™d made another choice too, and maybe that undid theย ๏ฌrst.ย Protect my daughter, Je๏ฌ€,ย Rachel had told him.ย You owe me.ย It was Bel she meant, but when it came down to it, it was her other daughter heโ€™d saved. Gave his life for it.

Rachel looked over the edge and when she turned back, there was something new in her eyes.

โ€œCarter, listen to me.โ€ย Voice hard, the mother and the survivor.ย โ€œThe DNA tests, could police access those results, if they went looking? See that

you and Bel are sisters?โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t think so. I unchecked the box about sharing information with law enforcement, just in case I was right.โ€

โ€œGood,โ€ย Rachel exhaled.ย โ€œNo one can ever know the truth.โ€

โ€œWhat do you mean?โ€ย Bel straightened up.ย โ€œThe world should know what they did to youโ€”โ€

โ€œThey are dead.โ€ย Rachel pointed where theyโ€™d disappeared.ย โ€œThatโ€™s punishment enough. The world cannot know. You two are involved now and there is nothing I wouldnโ€™t do to protect you, keep you safe. My girls. Which means no one can know the truth, about what Pat did, what Charlie did, that Carterโ€™s my daughter. That you two were here when Je๏ฌ€ย and Charlie

โ€”โ€

โ€œTheyโ€™re only dead because he tried to kill you,โ€ย Bel said.ย โ€œBecause I kidnapped him and chained him up.โ€

โ€œHe did that to youย ๏ฌrst! He asked Grandpa to kill you.โ€

โ€œThereโ€™s no evidence he was involved, Bel. One of them gone, the other has no memory of what he ever did. Donโ€™t you think I would have gone to the police, if that was ever an option? But thereย isย evidence here. This.โ€ย She pointed harder.ย โ€œA crime scene at the bottom of this drop that leads back to us. Carter saved us, but thatโ€™s not what it looks like.โ€

Rachelโ€™s eyesย ๏ฌ‚icked down to Carter, sitting there on the rough ground, head in her hands, and Bel understood. Carter had killed Charlie, pushed him to his death. Justice to some, murder to others. It was Belโ€™s job to protect her little sister, take care of her. Familyย ๏ฌrst. Bel blinked and Rachel blinked back, a language of their own.

โ€œWhat do we do?โ€ย Bel asked.

โ€œWe need to get rid of everything. Anything that could lead to the truth, that ties us to being here, right now.โ€

โ€œLike the note?โ€ย Carter raised her head.ย โ€œHelp. My name is Rachel Price.ย It was in Dadโ€™s pocket. Itโ€™s in Je๏ฌ€โ€™s pocket.โ€ย Her pale eyes widened with horror, rubbed red-raw.

Rachel looked down, into all that nothing.

She swallowed, a clicking sound, like her throat was too narrow, crushed by Charlieโ€™s weight.ย โ€œI have to go down there. Iโ€™ll get the note. Je๏ฌ€โ€™s car keys too. His phone: we canโ€™t leave that, theyโ€™ll be able to trace him. I have to move the bodies.โ€

โ€œWhat?โ€ย Carter gasped.

โ€œCanโ€™t leave them out in the open. Theyโ€™ll be found. No oneโ€™s going to think they jumped, two brothers, together. A medical examiner will know Charlie fell backward, that he was pushed. Carter, didnโ€™t you say the gate into the mine was broken open? Theyโ€™re right by the entrance, down there. Iโ€™ll drag them inside, and dr-drop them down the old mine shaft.โ€

A second fall, to hide theย ๏ฌrst.

Bel chewed her tongue.ย โ€œHow far does it go down?โ€

โ€œFar,โ€ย Rachel answered.ย โ€œThe mine is supposed to be sealed o๏ฌ€, itโ€™s dangerous, and you canโ€™t get down there, not without special equipment. It could be months, years, decades, but we canโ€™t guarantee theyโ€™ll never be found. Which is why none of us three can ever be suspects, you understand? A stranger took me. He kept me in his basement for sixteen years. And none of this ever happened.โ€

Carter nodded. Bel too. She reached into her pocket, pulled out Charlieโ€™s wedding ring. It wasnโ€™t warm anymore, or cold, stinging at her skin, just an old bit of metal that meant nothing to her.

โ€œYou should probably put this back on him.โ€ย Bel handed the metal band to her mom.ย โ€œNo evidence, right?โ€

Rachel nodded, sliding it into her own pocket.

โ€œYou sure youโ€™re OK to go down there?โ€ย Bel asked.ย โ€œYour ankle?โ€

โ€œIโ€™ve survived worse,โ€ย Rachel said, a small smile to show she had, that no one had taken that from her.ย โ€œI can do this, have to do this, for my family. Butโ€ฆI canโ€™t do it all on my own. I thought I could do everything on my own, my plan, my reappearance. I was wrong, I know that now, Iโ€™m sorry. I need your help.โ€

โ€œAnything,โ€ย Bel said.

Carter stood up beside her.ย โ€œWhat do you need?โ€

Rachelโ€™s eyes glittered, staring at her daughters, the moonlight picking out the same silver in all of their skin.

She cleared her throat.ย โ€œWe have to do everything tonight, before anyone knows Je๏ฌ€ย is missing. Iโ€™ll get down to the mine entrance. You two walk back to the yard. Take my car, Bel. Keys are inside, engineโ€™s on.โ€

โ€œBut itโ€™s trapped, Je๏ฌ€โ€™s car isโ€”โ€

โ€œTake this.โ€ย Rachel picked up the axe, the thing that almost killed her, would have, if Carter hadnโ€™t appeared from nowhere. She passed it to Bel, theirย ๏ฌngers crossing on the handle.ย โ€œBreak the chain on the gates. Once theyโ€™re open, you can pull forward, turn around. Wipe your prints when youโ€™re done, the handle and the blade. Throw it back with the rest of the junk. Donโ€™t worry about the red truck. Iโ€™ll get to that when Iโ€™m done here, get rid of everything.โ€

Unmaking her own prison cell, so no one would ever know about theย ๏ฌfteen years,ย ๏ฌve months and twenty-๏ฌve days sheโ€™d spent locked inside. The man who put her there. The baby sheโ€™d given birth to. The other man sheโ€™d locked up as revenge for starting it all. All of it would be gone by morning.

โ€œTake Belโ€™s bike with you,โ€ย Rachel continued.ย โ€œThen head to your grandpaโ€™s house. The key is under theโ€”โ€

โ€œโ€”ceramic toad,โ€ย Bel said, just as Carter saidย โ€œBarry.โ€

Rachel smiled.ย โ€œMy message in all of those books, you need to get rid of them. Thatโ€™s what I was trying to do before you found them, Bel. Itโ€™s too dangerous to leave, says what happened, exactly where it all happened. You need to get rid of it, erase the pencil marks in all of those books. Always on theย ๏ฌrstย ๏ฌfty pages, never beyond. Can you do that? There must be an eraser in the house somewhere.โ€

โ€œWeโ€™llย ๏ฌnd one,โ€ย Carter said.

โ€œYordan will be asleep upstairs, you have to be quiet. If he catches you

โ€”โ€

โ€œWeโ€™ll think of an excuse.ย My dad told me to tidy these, Iโ€™ll be in trouble if

I donโ€™t,โ€ย Carter o๏ฌ€ered.

Rachelโ€™s smile pulled wider.ย โ€œI think thatโ€™s it. No other loose ends that could lead police to the truth, to what happened here.โ€

Belโ€™s heart dropped into her stomach, more space, now the knot was gone forever.

โ€œAsh,โ€ย she hissed.ย โ€œFuck.โ€ย She kicked out at a stone, sending it over the edge.

Rachel narrowed her eyes.ย โ€œFrom theย ๏ฌlm crew? What about him?โ€

Bel ran her hands through her hair, pulling her face tight.ย โ€œHeโ€™s been helping me. I wasโ€ฆinvestigating you. I was sure you were lying about your disappearance and how you came back. Thought if I could prove it, life would go back to normal. Ash helped me. He has footage ofโ€ฆโ€

Rachel limped toward her.ย โ€œWhat does he have footage of?โ€

โ€œA lot.โ€ย Bel shook her head, thinking back.ย โ€œMr. Tripp saying he gave you three thousand dollars before you disappeared. The sighting of you in January, we spoke to the store owner, saw a still from the camera. We have you looking for something in Grandpaโ€™s house, before you found the hidden camera. Fuck.โ€ย She pulled her hair tighter.ย โ€œWe have tonight. The message in the book, in all of the books, me writing it down. Ash was recording.โ€

โ€œFuck.โ€ย Rachel covered her face.

โ€œThereโ€™s more.โ€ย Bel dropped her arms, swinging useless at her sides.ย โ€œHe came with me, to the red truck. He stopped recording before we got there butโ€ฆโ€

โ€œBel?โ€

โ€œIโ€™m sorry,โ€ย Bel whispered.ย โ€œAsh saw Charlie chained up in the truck, before I sent him away. Iโ€™m sorry, Mom.โ€

Rachel bit down on her lip. She came even closer, face to face, Belโ€™s eyes re๏ฌ‚ected in her own.ย โ€œDonโ€™t you say sorry either. None of this is your fault. Iโ€™m not angry at you. You were right; I was lying to you from the start, I canโ€™t be mad that you were smart enough to see through it. Proud, actually.ย Iโ€™mย sorry, sorry I lied to you. Maybe I should have just told you the truth, both of you. I justโ€ฆwasnโ€™t sure you were ready to hear it.โ€

โ€œI wasnโ€™t.โ€ย Bel hadnโ€™t been ready, not until there was no other choice. But she was ready now, and she knew how toย ๏ฌx this.ย โ€œI can get to the footage, Mom. I know where Ash keeps it. He saw Charlie in the red truck.

I donโ€™t think heโ€™d tell anyone, but it wonโ€™t matter, will it? Not if thereโ€™s no proof. I can destroy the footage tonight, Mom.โ€

Undo everything sheโ€™d worked for, all those moments with Ash, big and small, getting closer until it was far too late to pretend she didnโ€™t care. She would still care, she knew that now, but she had to destroy every trace of it, to protect her sister and her mom.

โ€œYou sure?โ€

โ€œI can do it,โ€ย Bel said.

Rachel glanced over at Carter.

โ€œI can do the books at Grandpaโ€™s on my own,โ€ย she said.ย โ€œI can do that.โ€

Rachel pulled her in and hugged them both, three heads pressed together, under the same stars.

โ€œWe can do this.โ€ย Rachel wiped her eyes.

โ€œFamilyย ๏ฌrst,โ€ย Bel said. Not a threat, but a promise.

Rachel stumbled away from them, to where her phone had dropped, a yellow halo around it from theย ๏ฌ‚ashlight, trapped against the rock. She picked it up, stared at the screen.ย โ€œWe need to turn our phones o๏ฌ€, so we canโ€™t be traced here. Turn yours o๏ฌ€, girls. Now. Donโ€™t turn them on again until you get out of here.โ€

Bel switched hers o๏ฌ€.

Rachel was tapping her screen.ย โ€œNot working. How do I turn this thing o๏ฌ€?โ€

โ€œLet me do it,โ€ย Carter said, taking the phone out of Rachelโ€™s hand.ย โ€œYou hold this one, see.โ€ย She showed her.ย โ€œAnd then you swipe. Like that.โ€

โ€œAh.โ€

Bel smiled, watching them together, this small mother-daughter moment in this dark and wild place that broke a family and saved another. And the moon had seen it all.

Bel handed Rachel theย ๏ฌ‚ashlight.ย โ€œYou take it. You need it more. Weโ€™ll stick to the trail. Weโ€™ll beย ๏ฌne.โ€ย She glanced at Carter, a small punch to her arm, because that was what sisters did.ย โ€œIโ€™ll take care of her.โ€

Rachel accepted it, the silver beam lighting up both her daughters.ย โ€œItโ€™s going to be OK, girls. I love you. Iโ€™ll see you later, when we all get home.โ€

Bel picked up the axe, started to turn, but Carter hesitated, a croak in the back of her throat.

โ€œWhich home?โ€ย she asked.

โ€œOurs, Carter,โ€ย their mom said.ย โ€œOur home.โ€
