Chapter no 4

The Reappearance of Rachel Price

Rachel Price alive again, brought back through time, lips grazing her bared teeth as she smiled through the cold.

โ€œJe๏ฌ€,โ€ย she said in a voice that almost sounded real.ย โ€œAre you recording?โ€

โ€œWhat gave you that idea?โ€ย came Je๏ฌ€โ€™s voice, distorted and crackly, too close to the microphone.ย โ€œThe camera in my hand?โ€

Je๏ฌ€-from-now laughed at his own joke.

The angle shifted as past-Je๏ฌ€ย stepped forward, and now Bel could see a well-padded baby in the cradle of Rachelโ€™s arm, body in line with hers, fast asleep. Not just a baby, it was Bel, she knew that, yet she felt detached from the small sleeping child; they were from two di๏ฌ€erent worlds.

โ€œLook at you,โ€ย Sherry-from-now said, just as the past version of her spoke too:

โ€œIโ€™m giving up if no oneโ€™s helping me with this snowman!โ€

Younger Sherry walked on-screen, prints following her in the snow, Charlie too. They were bundled up in thick coats and gloves, hats that swallowed half their frost-pinked faces.

A snowball exploded against Sherryโ€™s chest, spattering white dust on her chin.

โ€œJe๏ฌ€, Iโ€™ll kill you,โ€ย she growled at the camera.ย โ€œYou could have hit the baby.โ€

โ€œAnnaโ€™sย ๏ฌne.โ€ย Rachel smiled down at the baby, eyes glittering.ย โ€œShe can sleep through anything.โ€

Bel forgot, for a moment, that that was her; theย ๏ฌrst part of her name that sheโ€™d amputated years ago. She didnโ€™t know Rachel had called her Anna; no one had ever told her.

โ€œCome on, Charlie, Je๏ฌ€. One of you hop on!โ€ย came Grandpaโ€™s old voice

โ€”older but younger. He still sounded like himself; Bel missed that. The camera panned toย ๏ฌnd him, squatting on a blue sled that was far too small for him, let alone another grown man.

A grin split her dadโ€™s face, this younger version of him in the snow. He squeezed Rachelโ€™s shoulder as he passed, giggling when he dropped onto the front of the sled, tucked between Grandpaโ€™s legs.

โ€œGo on, Dad!โ€ย Je๏ฌ€ย called.

Grandpa kicked o๏ฌ€ย against the snow and the sled started to move. Je๏ฌ€ย chased after them, feet crunching. The camera swerved and Belย ๏ฌnally knew where they all were. She could tell by the junk pile of rusted cars and dead equipment in the distance behind them. She recognized the old red truck in the middle of the pileup, and the tall framework she always thought looked like a mechanical gira๏ฌ€e. Called it Larry. They were at Price & Sons Logging Yard, owned by Grandpa, and his dad and grandpa before him. It had gone out of business maybe thirty years ago, before her dad or Je๏ฌ€ย had really had a chance to becomeย thoseย sons, but it had a good slope down toward the river and was the perfect place to sled when the snow was right. As long as you didnโ€™t go anywhere near all the old trucks and saws and dangerous equipment, otherwise Grandpa got mad.

He wasnโ€™t mad now, though, laughing as he and Charlie sped down the hill.

The sled tipped over, Charlie did it on purpose, a cascade of snow glittering down on him and Grandpa. They laughed and laughed in the way that hurts if you do it too long, half buried there.

Rachelโ€™s voiceย ๏ฌ‚oated in from behind the camera, detached from her body.ย โ€œOh no, theyโ€™re gone, Anna. We lost them in the snow forever.โ€

The clip ended, and the television screen went dark.

โ€œWow.โ€ย Sherry was theย ๏ฌrst to speak.ย โ€œYou forget just how young she was when it happened.โ€

โ€œSo young,โ€ย Je๏ฌ€ย agreed.ย โ€œI mean, thereโ€™s only nine years now, Bel, between you and your mom there.โ€

It felt much greater than that.

โ€œThere was quite an age di๏ฌ€erence between you all, wasnโ€™t there?โ€ย Ramsey said.ย โ€œNine years, Charlie, between you and Rachel.โ€

โ€œYes,โ€ย Charlie said, speaking around the lump in his throat; no one else would hear it but Bel. Heย ๏ฌddled with his left hand.

โ€œHow is that for you, to see those happy family memories?โ€

โ€œItโ€™s hard,โ€ย Charlie sni๏ฌ€ed.ย โ€œWhen I see Rachel smiling like that, it makes me want to smile too, with her, like itโ€™s instinct. She was infectious like that. I know itโ€™s a thing people say, and maybe she didnโ€™t light upย everyย room, but she lit up every room for me.โ€ย He paused. Bel glanced back and saw that his eyes had gone glassy, the silent threat of silent tears.ย โ€œBut I know Iโ€™ll never see her again, and it takes my body a few seconds to catch up. Itโ€™s hard,โ€ย he summed up again.ย โ€œSometimes itโ€™s easier, not to see her face.โ€

โ€œI canโ€™t help but notice youโ€™re still wearing your wedding ring,โ€ย Ramsey said. Bel couldnโ€™t help but notice either now because her dad wasย ๏ฌddling with it, spinning it around the pudge of hisย ๏ฌnger, backward and forward.

Charlie looked down at it, like he was seeing it for theย ๏ฌrst time.ย โ€œYes, I still wear my wedding ring.โ€ย A small, pained smile.ย โ€œIf Iโ€™m being honest, Iโ€™m not sure I could take it o๏ฌ€ย anymore if I wanted to.โ€ย He attempted it, pulling at the metal band.ย โ€œNo, stuck on there pretty good. Guess myย ๏ฌngers are a little fatter than they used to be. Itโ€™s engraved on the inside, the date of our wedding: July twenty-third, 2005. Best day of my lifeโ€ฆโ€ย An empty laugh, to push away the tears.ย โ€œI like wearing the ring. Itโ€™s a little reminder of Rachel, of the life we had together, however short it was. Means sheโ€™s still here in some small way.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s really sweet, Charlie,โ€ย Sherry commented, leaning across to pat him on the knee.ย โ€œGoing to make me cry over here.โ€

Ramsey looked almost annoyed at the intrusion, the moment gone, Dadโ€™s face straightened out.

โ€œNow, Carter,โ€ย Ramsey said, and she almost jumped, so surprised at the sound of her own name.ย โ€œYou never knew your aunt Rachel; you were born four months after she went missing. What has that been like, growing up with Rachel having such a presence in your life, when you never actually met her?โ€

Carter cleared her throat, shifting her legs.ย โ€œI mean, I think itโ€™s that word you said. Presence. She might have disappeared, but sheโ€™s always been a part of my family, one of the Prices, even though we had no overlap. Itโ€™s like with older relatives you never meet, like Grandma Price.โ€ย She gestured at Grandpa, who stared ahead at nothing.ย โ€œYou feel like you knew them, because of the memories and stories people share. And without Rachel, I wouldnโ€™t have Bel, soโ€ฆโ€

Carter trailed o๏ฌ€, smiling at Bel instead, and somehow that said enough, that said more. But it wouldnโ€™t last forever, people didnโ€™t, and Carter would be gone in two-and-a-bit years.

โ€œGreat answer, honey,โ€ย Sherry said, dabbing her eyes. Carter shifted her legs back.

โ€œYes, it was,โ€ย Ramsey agreed.ย โ€œAnd in some small way, you did overlap with Rachel in that clip. Because, Sherry, you would have been pregnant with Carter that Christmas, wouldnโ€™t you?โ€

Sherryโ€™s eyes calculated,ย ๏ฌ‚icking back and forth.ย โ€œYes,โ€ย she said,ย โ€œyouโ€™re right. It would have been early on; I wasnโ€™t yet showing.โ€

โ€œThank God, otherwise we would have had to cart you around on that sled.โ€ย Charlie leaned forward to tease her, his breath in Belโ€™s hair.ย โ€œShe just ballooned up like a whale at what, six, seven months. And thenโ€ฆโ€ย Charlie stopped to rub his nose.ย โ€œWell, then I was arrested in June, in custody, so I never got to see you at your biggest, didnโ€™t actually get to meet Carter until she was six months old.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s a great feeling when your brother-in-law refers to you as a whale,โ€ย Sherry laughed, stretching her powdered-sugar skin.ย โ€œBut heโ€™s right, I did just pop out of nowhere. I remember, we hadnโ€™t really told anyone yet. Je๏ฌ€ย and I struggled for a long time to have a baby.โ€ย She took Je๏ฌ€โ€™s hand out of his lap.ย โ€œWeโ€™d been trying almost ten years, so weโ€™d learned to keep things to ourselves, to not get too excited in those early stages. I was thirty-eight when we had Carter, our miracle baby. But then, you know, it was everything going on with Rachelโ€™s disappearance, and we didnโ€™t want to add to any of that stress and upheaval. So we kept it to ourselves, until we couldnโ€™t keep it to ourselves anymore.โ€

โ€œBecause of the whale-belly,โ€ย Charlie added.

โ€œWell, she doesnโ€™t look like a whale anymore.โ€ย Sherry bent forward to tickle the sides of Carterโ€™s long neck. Carter tried to pull away and Sherry dropped the smile, but her dimples stayed, an afterlife preserved in makeup. She withdrew and looked up at Ramsey.ย โ€œSorry, I know thatโ€™s not what this documentary is about. Us. You can cut the useless parts out, right?โ€

โ€œNo, no,โ€ย Ramsey corrected her.ย โ€œThisย isย what the documentary is about. All this life stu๏ฌ€, family stu๏ฌ€, and how Rachelโ€™s disappearance a๏ฌ€ected other aspects of everyday life people wouldnโ€™t think of. You keeping your pregnancy under wraps, Charlie not meeting his niece until she was six months old because of the trial. Thatโ€™s the story Iโ€™m interested in telling. The Rachel in everything. Itโ€™s all good stu๏ฌ€.โ€

โ€œAll good stu๏ฌ€, Carter.โ€ย Sherry glowed, running herย ๏ฌngers through her daughterโ€™s copper hair.ย โ€œWe must have known she was going to be tall and beautiful, huh? Named her after Carter Dome, itโ€™s a mountain close by. Thatโ€™s where me and Je๏ฌ€โ€”โ€

Charlie coughed, cutting her o๏ฌ€, choking on nothing.ย โ€œWhat?โ€ย Sherry turned to him. Bel did too.

Charlie laughed awkwardly through his nose.ย โ€œI know Ramsey asked for honesty, but you donโ€™t have to sayย everythingย on camera.โ€

โ€œWhat are you talking about?โ€ย Sherry rounded on him.ย โ€œItโ€™s where me

and Je๏ฌ€ย got engaged.โ€

โ€œOh,โ€ย Charlie said, lips puckered out, holding on to the shape. Then a louderย โ€œOh,โ€ย before he cracked up, a loud, wheezing laugh that came from the ribs.ย โ€œI thought you were going to say it was where Carter was, yโ€™know,ย conceived.โ€

โ€œWhat, no!โ€ย Sherry screeched, hands raised in defense.ย โ€œDid you really

think that was the reason we named her that?โ€

โ€œDad!โ€ย Bel did her duty, telling him o๏ฌ€, splitting the word into two disapproving syllables.

Je๏ฌ€ย and Sherry were hooting now too.

โ€œUrgh, Uncle Charlie.โ€ย Carter pulled a face, looking out at Ramsey and the rest of the crew.ย โ€œI guess you canโ€™t choose your family, can you?โ€ย she said with a sni๏ฌ€.

โ€œThis is perfect, guys.โ€ย Ramsey grinned down at the monitor.ย โ€œReally great. The next clip is from January 2009.โ€

He pressed a button and the television static-crackled back into life, taking them to a di๏ฌ€erent living room: the one in Grandpaโ€™s house.

The shot settled on the chair in the corner of the room. Bel was sitting on Grandpaโ€™s lap while he read to her from a green hardcover book. She was much bigger than theyโ€™d last seen her, but still tiny, the book almost as big as she was.

โ€œโ€ฆthe memory thief studied the back of her pretty red head,โ€ย Grandpa was reading out in his deep storybook voice.ย โ€œThe knife still clutched in his hand.โ€

โ€œPat,โ€ย Sherryโ€™s voice chimed in behind the camera,ย โ€œpretty sure that book is far too old for her. Doesnโ€™t even have pictures.โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t be silly, Sherry,โ€ย Grandpa shot her down, returning his eyes to the book.ย โ€œShe doesnโ€™t know what itโ€™s about, just likes the sounds, donโ€™t you, Annabel?โ€

โ€œYe, Paw-Paw,โ€ย little Annabel said, well on her way to three years old,ย ๏ฌngers tracing the page.

โ€œShe loves it. Itโ€™s a special book, isnโ€™t it, little one?โ€

The camera shu๏ฌ„ed over to a car seat positioned by the sofa. There was a new sleeping baby there, a pink-faced Carter.

โ€œThey should be back soon, shouldnโ€™t they?โ€ย Sherry said, a quiver in her voice.

โ€œAny minute,โ€ย Grandpa replied, one in his too.

โ€œWait.โ€ย Sherryโ€™s breath rattled, windstorm hard, behind the camera.ย โ€œI hear a car. I think thatโ€™s them. Annabel, come with me, honey!โ€ย Sherry hurried out of the room, blurring the shot. She pulled the front door open, the chirping sounds of a small girl behind her.ย โ€œAnnabel, itโ€™s your daddy, look!โ€

A small black truck had pulled up outside the house. The driverโ€™s-side door opened and Charlie stepped out, wearing a smart suit, the tie undone into two loose snakesย ๏ฌ‚apping over his shoulders.

โ€œWhere is she?โ€ย he called to Sherry, grinning.ย โ€œWhereโ€™s Annabel?โ€

The angle shuddered as a small blond head pushed through Sherryโ€™s legs.ย โ€œThere she is!โ€ย Charlie crouched down with his arms outstretched, voice thick with tears already. Uncle Je๏ฌ€ย stepped out of the truck behind him, but

Charlie only had eyes for her.ย โ€œCome here, baby girl.โ€

โ€œMy daddy!โ€ย small Annabel screeched as her little legs raced beneath her, unsteady and unbalanced, jumping toward him head๏ฌrst. Her dad caught her before she hit the ground. He straightened up, holding her tightly in his arms, her face buried next to his, coming up wet with his kisses and his tears.

โ€œDaddyโ€™s home,โ€ย he said into her ru๏ฌ„ed hair.ย โ€œNot leaving again. Never leaving you again, I promise, Annabel.โ€

The small child nodded, snatching his promise from the air, pressing her hand to his mouth. Charlie blew a loud raspberry against it.

โ€œDaddy,ย โ€™top it. Come see my baby.โ€ย She pointed a stubbyย ๏ฌnger back toward the camera. Back toward her eighteen-year-old self, sitting on the living roomย ๏ฌ‚oor, watching.

The screen went dark.

A sni๏ฌ€ย behind Bel; her dad was crying in this timeline too, dabbing at his eyes with his darkening sleeves.

โ€œSorry,โ€ย he coughed, embarrassed. Bel wrapped her arm around one of his legs.

โ€œNo, donโ€™t be sorry at all,โ€ย Ramsey said gently.ย โ€œCan you tell us what was happening in that clip?โ€

โ€œNot sure I can,โ€ย Charlie said, a shuddering hu๏ฌ€. He hid his face. Sherry was crying too, in a prettier way, face intact.

And Grandpa wouldnโ€™t remember. That left only Je๏ฌ€.

โ€œThat was the day of the verdict,โ€ย he said,ย ๏ฌnally getting a word in edgewise.ย โ€œThe jury reached their decision after two days of deliberation. Sherry stayed home to watch the kids. Dad couldnโ€™t bear to come to the courthouse; he was sick with nerves, terri๏ฌed it would be a guilty verdict, so I went alone. The jury returned a verdict ofย Not guilty.ย Which meant that Charlie wasย ๏ฌnally free, that he couldย ๏ฌnally come home. It was an emotional day.โ€

โ€œYou spent a total of seven months in custody, Charlie, awaiting trial,โ€ย Ramsey tried with him again.ย โ€œThat must have felt like a very long time.โ€

Charlie nodded.ย โ€œToo long. To be away from Bel when she was so young. But that was a good day. Bittersweet, because we still didnโ€™t have Rachel and no answers on what really happened to her. But it was the end of such an awful period of my life. I was just so happy to be back with my family.โ€

โ€œWe were happy to have you back,โ€ย Je๏ฌ€ย added.

โ€œYes,โ€ย Sherry sni๏ฌ€ed.ย โ€œNot that we didnโ€™t love having Bel. She came to live with us when Charlie was arrested, and we had a new baby on the way imminently. Went from having no children in the house to two in quick succession. It wasโ€ฆโ€ย Sherry paused, chewing on the thought.ย โ€œEventful. A little overwhelming. But Bel was a very sweet little girl. She used to ask us:ย Whereโ€™s Mommy? Whereโ€™s Daddy?ย Didnโ€™t she, Je๏ฌ€? But eventually, she stopped asking. And once Carter arrived, Bel was obsessed with her. Used to call herย my baby,ย like you saw there.โ€

Bel turned to Carter, mouthedย my babyย at her, more demonically than Sherry had described it.

Carter snorted.

โ€œAnd Patrick helped us out a lot, didnโ€™t you?โ€ย Sherry directed the words toward Grandpa.ย โ€œWe had a home birth, when Carter arrivedโ€”Iโ€™m not into hospitals or needles and all of that crap.โ€

All of that crap.ย Donโ€™t get her started on homeopathic teas.

โ€œโ€ฆSo Pat took Bel for a few days when Carter was born. He helped us a lot with the girls, loves his granddaughters. You loved reading to Bel, didnโ€™t you, Pat? We were allย ๏ฌguring everything out together, as a family unit. I think we did a pretty good job.โ€

โ€œYes, you did,โ€ย Charlie said softly.ย โ€œAnd Iโ€™m so grateful you were all there for Bel when I couldnโ€™t be. Iโ€™ll never be able to thank you enough. Donโ€™t think Iโ€™ve said it as much as I should.โ€

โ€œYou donโ€™t need to.โ€ย Je๏ฌ€ย looked across Sherry at him, brother to brother.ย โ€œThatโ€™s what family is for. I had no doubt they were going toย ๏ฌnd you innocent that day. Thatโ€™s why I took Charlieโ€™s truck to the courthouse; I knew he would want to drive it home, a free man.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s right,โ€ย Charlie said, wiping his eyes.ย โ€œMy Ford F-Series. I loved that truck. Iโ€™d only bought it a few weeks before I was arrested and Iโ€”โ€

โ€œGotta go to the bathroom,โ€ย Je๏ฌ€ย muttered quickly, standing up and walking away from the sofa before anyone could say anything.

Ramseyโ€™s eyes widened. The rest of the crew exchanged looks.ย โ€œJe๏ฌ€, you canโ€™t justโ€”โ€

But Je๏ฌ€ย could, because he was already gone, out into the hallway, closing the bathroom door behind him. Not good at reading rooms, Uncle Je๏ฌ€.

A moment later, Ash pulled a pained face, lifting the headphones o๏ฌ€ย his ears, holding them over his head like a crown.

โ€œHeโ€™s still got his mike on,โ€ย he said.ย โ€œYou can hear him peeing?โ€ย Bel asked.ย โ€œOh yeah. Really going for it.โ€

Carter smacked her forehead.ย โ€œKill me now, honestly.โ€

โ€œI thought he just didnโ€™t want anyone to see him cry,โ€ย Charlie said,ย ๏ฌnally drying his eyes.ย โ€œBut on the topic of peeing and my favorite truckโ€ฆ,โ€ย he began.

โ€œDonโ€™t you dare.โ€ย Bel spun around to shoot him a look. Charlie giggled, ru๏ฌ„ing her hair.

โ€œGo on,โ€ย he said.ย โ€œItโ€™s cute.โ€

No, it was not cute, the very opposite. And there was an entire Britishย ๏ฌlm crew here. Not to mention the camera.

Her dad poked her in the back.ย โ€œIโ€™ve already started now.โ€

Bel sighed, turned away. Well,ย ๏ฌne, if it cheered him up. But she wasnโ€™t going to help him tell it.

โ€œI loved that truck,โ€ย Charlie said to Ramsey, throwing himself right into the story, permission granted.ย โ€œWould have kept it forever. Butโ€ฆBel and I were in North Conway, canโ€™t remember the reason now.โ€

Bel did.ย โ€œWe went to Story Land for my twelfth birthday.โ€

โ€œRight,โ€ย Charlie said.ย โ€œWe stopped at Taco Bell on the drive home. I leave Bel in the truck while I go in to grab the food. And when I come back out, sheโ€™d wet herselfย allย over the backseat.โ€ย He chuckled, telling the story with his hands too.ย โ€œI meanย everywhere.ย So much pee.โ€

โ€œUncle Charlie,โ€ย Carter said, voice chiding, dipping deeper with his name.

โ€œYou left me there for, like, three hours,โ€ย Bel protested, a heat in her cheeks that was worse than the story itself.

Charlie laughed harder.ย โ€œIt was ten minutes. Fifteen tops. Too many milkshakes at Story Land, I think, kiddo.โ€ย He leaned all the way forward, wrapping her in a bear hug from behind, an annoying number of kisses to the top of her head.ย โ€œBut we could never get the pee smell out. So that was the end of my beautiful truck, myย ๏ฌrst drive as a free man.โ€

โ€œRIP,โ€ย Bel grumbled.ย โ€œRest in pee?โ€ย he added.

Bel wouldnโ€™t dignify that with an answer.

The sound of a toiletย ๏ฌ‚ushing, Je๏ฌ€ย whistling as he walked back in. De๏ฌnitely didnโ€™t wash his hands, then. Carter sank even farther into theย ๏ฌ‚oor.

โ€œJe๏ฌ€.โ€ย Ramsey stood up, voice as light and breezy as he could make it.ย โ€œNo big deal, but next time, could you wait until we arenโ€™t in the middle of a segment to go to the toilet?โ€

โ€œI really had to pee,โ€ย Je๏ฌ€ย said, retaking his place on the sofa.

โ€œOh, we know,โ€ย Ash muttered, replacing the headphones over his ears.

โ€œI wanted to return to something Je๏ฌ€ย said about that clip,โ€ย Ramsey said. Then, somehow softening and raising his voice at the same time, he asked:ย โ€œPatrick, do you remember why you didnโ€™t want to go to the courthouse the day the verdict was read? Patrick?โ€

โ€œWhat?โ€ย Grandpa croaked at his name.

โ€œWere you nervous the verdict was going to be guilty?โ€ โ€œWhoโ€™s that?โ€

Charlie shifted on the sofa, moving closer to Grandpa.ย โ€œDad?โ€ย he said softly.ย โ€œHeโ€™s asking you about the trial. Remember? About Rachel?โ€

โ€œRachel,โ€ย Grandpa said, choking over the sharp word, a cobweb of dried spit at the corner of his mouth.ย โ€œRachel. Charlieโ€™s girlfriend.โ€

โ€œWife,โ€ย Charlie corrected him with a gentle smile.ย โ€œItโ€™s OK, take your time, Dad.โ€ย Charlie brought himself even closer, arm around Grandpaโ€™s shoulders.

โ€œRachel,โ€ย he tried again.ย โ€œSh-she was, wasnโ€™t sheโ€ฆstop it,โ€ย Grandpa spat suddenly, picking one hand up from his lap andย ๏ฌ‚inging it toward Charlieโ€™s face. The slap made contact, just, a soft burst of violence before Charlie caught Grandpaโ€™s hand, cupping it gently between his much bigger hands. Safe hands.

โ€œItโ€™s OK, Dad,โ€ย he whispered to him.ย โ€œIโ€™m here. You have nothing to worry about.โ€

โ€œJe๏ฌ€?โ€ย Grandpa asked him.ย โ€œNo, itโ€™s Charlie. Iโ€™m here.โ€

Yordan stood to attention at the back of the room.

โ€œItโ€™s OK,โ€ย Charlie said to him, glancing at Bel to tell her as well. And it was OK, if her dad said it was.

He turned his gaze to Ramsey.ย โ€œDad lost a lot of his memory when he had hisย ๏ฌrst stroke, last summer. It was a bad one. Been in a wheelchair since the second. He has vascular dementia, so heโ€™s losing more of his working memory, his speech, old memories. He can get aggressive without meaning to.โ€

Ramsey probably knew all of this; her dad must have explained it already. Maybe he was saying it now for the camera, so people didnโ€™t think

Grandpa was just mean.

โ€œI think heโ€™s lost most of the time that Rachel was with us. Iโ€™m not sure he even remembers the girls,โ€ย Charlie said sadly, refusing to look down at them.

Not remembering was a little like leaving.

โ€œHe doesnโ€™t have those memories anymore. Iโ€™m not sure itโ€™s fair of us to ask him about Rachel, it will only distress him.โ€

And maybe Bel was the only one who could truly understand that.

โ€œOf course, Iโ€™m sorry,โ€ย Ramsey said.ย โ€œI shouldnโ€™t have. I thought I saw him smiling during the video. Iโ€™m sorry.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s OK.โ€

โ€œAre we OK to carry on?โ€

And they were, because Dad said it, a small red mark growing on his cheek.

โ€œThisย ๏ฌnal clip is an important one,โ€ย Ramsey said, zeroing in on Bel instead.

Great, her turn in the spotlight? Sheโ€™d been trying to go unnoticed, which was not the same as disappeared. Sherry and Dad were easy shields.

โ€œThe reason this one is special,โ€ย Ramsey continued,ย โ€œis because it might be the last-ever video of Rachel Price, other than the security footage from the White Mountains Mall. This video was taken, by Rachel, on February eleventh, 2008, two days before she disappeared.โ€

He let that hang in the air for a moment.ย โ€œHere we go.โ€

He pressed play.

A close-up of a child in a yellow onesie, lying on the carpet, a gummy baby-tooth smile at the camera above. Bare chubby feet pressed together like thoughtful hands, waiting for something.

โ€œWhoโ€™s the best girl in the world?โ€ย the voice behind the camera asked, soft and breathy and sure, like it already knew the answer. Familiar somehow too. One oversized hand reached down, coming from the sky to tickle the young child. She giggled, balling her little babyย ๏ฌsts, spitting

bubbles as her happy tongue poked through. Freezing when the hand withdrew, like she only came alive at the touch. Tickled again.

โ€œAre you a mommyโ€™s girl?โ€ย the voice asked. The child squealed in response.ย โ€œYou are, arenโ€™t you? Youโ€™re a mommyโ€™s girl, Anna-Belly-Boo.โ€

โ€œMa-ma,โ€ย the child answered, stilted and bright.ย โ€œYes, Anna. You love your mama, huh?โ€

โ€œThess,โ€ย said the kid, con๏ฌdent it was a word.ย โ€œThess ah mama blong- itf.โ€ย Con๏ฌdent that that was a sentence.

โ€œYeah, good girl,โ€ย Rachel said, pretending to understand.ย โ€œAnd Mommy loves you more than anything in the whole wide world. Doesnโ€™t she?โ€

There was a sound, the soft crash of the front door closing, somewhere o๏ฌ€ย camera.

โ€œYouโ€™re here already,โ€ย Charlieโ€™s voice, mu๏ฌ„ed in the background.ย โ€œHow did you get home?โ€

โ€œJules gave me a ride,โ€ย Rachel replied.

โ€œI would have come get you,โ€ย he said.ย โ€œRachel, honey.โ€ย Closer now.ย โ€œYou didnโ€™t shut the front door again. You really need to check, itโ€™s freezing out. Arenโ€™t you cold?โ€

โ€œNot really,โ€ย she answered.ย โ€œWeโ€™re not cold, are we, baby girl?โ€ย Young Annabel hitched up her feet, blowing another happy bubble. The clip ended.

Black screen.

Bel swallowed, a wad of thick saliva sticking in her throat. The room was silent, everyone waiting for her to say something.

โ€œYeah,โ€ย she said, which might as well have been nothing.ย โ€œI hadnโ€™t seen that before.โ€ย Saying something without saying anything. Bel turned back to the camera, catching Ashโ€™s eyes on the way over. He gave her a small double thumbs-up, held tightly to his strawberry-covered chest. Urgh, he could shove those thumbs up hisโ€”

โ€œWhat are you thinking, Bel?โ€ย Ramsey asked.ย โ€œHow does it make you feel, seeing that clip? Just two days before everything changed, forever.โ€

How did it make her feel? Uncomfortable, throat-swollen, sweaty- palmed.

โ€œItโ€™s nice,โ€ย she lied.ย โ€œTo see a normal moment like that. I donโ€™t remember any with her. But I seemed happy there.โ€

โ€œYes, you did.โ€ย An encouraging smile on Ramseyโ€™s face.ย โ€œAs did Rachel, I think. Very happy, no hint of the impending disaster. I got emotional when Iย ๏ฌrst saw it, Iโ€™ll admit,โ€ย he said,ย โ€œbecause itโ€™s just so clear how much your mum loved you.โ€

Did she? More than anything in the whole wide world? Well then, why did she leave Bel behind in the backseat of her car just forty-eight hours later? Disappeared forever. Explain that one.

โ€œAnother thing I couldnโ€™t help but notice,โ€ย Ramsey continued. He couldnโ€™t help noticing a lot, huh? Should see a doctor about that.ย โ€œThereโ€™s the physical resemblance between you and Rachel, but the thing that gets me here, is how similar the two of you sound. Your voices when you speak are almost exactly the same.โ€

โ€œYeah, I noticed that,โ€ย Je๏ฌ€ย chimed in.ย โ€œReally similar, now youโ€™re all grown up. Weโ€™d probably get you two mixed up all the time on the phone ifโ€ฆโ€

Yeah, ifโ€ฆ

Bel’s intuition was correct. The familiarity of Rachel’s voice wasn’t from memoriesโ€”she had none. As Ramsey awaited her response, Bel hesitated, reluctant to speak in Rachel’s voice again.

Ramsey shifted his focus to her father. “Charlie, there’s another aspect from that clip we’d like to discuss. During your trial in December 2008, you testified that Rachel’s behavior changed in the months before her disappearance. You described her as becoming forgetful, preoccupied, and distracted. Could you elaborate on that?”

Charlie straightened, the old sofa groaning beneath him. “It wasn’t anything major. Just small things, like what you saw with the front door. Rachel started forgetting things she normally wouldn’t. She’d leave the oven on, burn food, forget Bel in the bathtub. It was always somethingโ€”the stove, faucets, windows, baby monitor. I chalked it up to ‘baby brain.’ Maybe returning to work, even part-time, was too soon. I’m certain that’s all it was.”

Bel shifted uncomfortably on the hard floor. She wasn’t as convinced as her father. Leaving the front door ajar unintentionally, forgetting to turn off the shower, neglecting to seal the trash can during black bear season despite knowing betterโ€”these were all things she’d done. Her father had always been understanding, perhaps too much so. Had he noticed the parallels? He’d never mentioned it, which was a relief. Bel had no desire to emulate Rachel Price. If Rachel illuminated rooms, Bel would cast shadows. If Rachel was forgetful, Bel would strive to be the opposite

โ€œAnd Bel,โ€ย Ramsey said,ย โ€œI know itโ€™s been sixteen years, and you think your mum is most likely dead. But if she did, somehow, come back after all this time, what would you want to say to her?โ€

Bel didnโ€™t even know how to begin to answer that. And that wasย ๏ฌne, she didnโ€™t owe Ramsey everything in her head. She could keep some back for herself.ย โ€œI donโ€™t know, I didnโ€™t really know her.โ€

โ€œIย know,โ€ย Charlie said, stepping in, saving her.ย โ€œIโ€™ve thought about it a lot, have dreams about it, even. I would just want to hold her. Wrap my arms around her and just tell her how much I love her. How much Iโ€™ve missed her. Before any questions, those can come later.โ€

Sherry blew her nose, loudly.

โ€œYou OK, honey?โ€ย Je๏ฌ€ย asked her. She waved him o๏ฌ€.

โ€œIt wonโ€™t ever happen, I know that,โ€ย Charlie said, voice splitting in two, catching the tears before they fell.ย โ€œBut thatโ€™s what Iโ€™d do.โ€
