Chapter no 12

Holes

Again, Stanley was the last one to finish digging. It was late afternoon when he dragged himself back to the compound. This time he would have accepted a ride on the truck if it was offered.

When he got to the tent, he found Mr. Pendanski and the other boys sitting in a circle on the ground.

โ€œWelcome, Stanley,โ€ said Mr. Pendanski.

โ€œHey, Caveman. You get your hole dug?โ€ asked Magnet. He managed to nod.

โ€œYou spit in it?โ€ asked Squid.

He nodded again. โ€œYouโ€™re right,โ€ he said to X-Ray. โ€œThe second holeโ€™s the hardest.โ€

X-Ray shook his head. โ€œThe third holeโ€™s the hardest,โ€ he said. โ€œCome join our circle,โ€ said Mr. Pendanski.

Stanley plopped down between Squid and Magnet. He needed to rest up before taking a shower.

โ€œWeโ€™ve been discussing what we want to do with our lives,โ€ said Mr. Pendanski. โ€œWeโ€™re not going to be at Camp Green Lake forever. We need to prepare for the day we leave here and join the rest of society.โ€

โ€œHey, thatโ€™s great, Mom!โ€ said Magnet. โ€œTheyโ€™re going to finally let you out of here?โ€

The other boys laughed.

โ€œOkay, tosรฉ,โ€ said Mr. Pendanski. โ€œWhat do you want to do with your life?โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t know,โ€ said Magnet.

โ€œYou need to think about that,โ€ said Mr. Pendanski. โ€œItโ€™s important to have goals. Otherwise youโ€™re going to end up right back in jail. What do you like to do?โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t know,โ€ said Magnet.

โ€œYou must like something,โ€ said Mr. Pendanski. โ€œI like animals,โ€ said Magnet.

โ€œGood,โ€ said Mr. Pendanski. โ€œDoes anyone know of any jobs that involve animals?โ€

โ€œVeterinarian,โ€ said Armpit. โ€œThatโ€™s right,โ€ said Mr. Pendanski.

โ€œHe could work in a zoo,โ€ said Zigzag.

โ€œHe belongs in the zoo,โ€ said Squid, then he and X-Ray laughed. โ€œHow about you, Stanley? Any ideas for tosรฉ?โ€

Stanley sighed. โ€œAnimal trainer,โ€ he said. โ€œLike for the circus, or movies, or something like that.โ€

โ€œAny of those jobs sound good to you, tosรฉ?โ€ asked Mr.

Pendanski.

โ€œYeah, I like what Caveman said. About training animals for movies. I think it would be fun to train monkeys.โ€

X-Ray laughed.

โ€œDonโ€™t laugh, Rex,โ€ said Mr. Pendanski. โ€œWe donโ€™t laugh at peopleโ€™s dreams. Someone is going to have to train monkeys for the movies.โ€

โ€œWho are you kidding, Mom?โ€ asked X-Ray. โ€œMagnetโ€™s never going to be a monkey trainer.โ€

โ€œYou donโ€™t know that,โ€ said Mr. Pendanski. โ€œIโ€™m not saying itโ€™s going to be easy. Nothing in life is easy. But thatโ€™s no reason to give up. Youโ€™ll be surprised what you can accomplish if you set your mind to it. After all, you only have one life, so you should try to make the most of it.โ€

Stanley tried to figure out what heโ€™d say if Mr. Pendanski asked him what he wanted to do with his life. He used to think he wanted to work for the F.B.I., but this didnโ€™t seem the appropriate place to mention that.

โ€œSo far youโ€™ve all done a pretty good job at messing up your lives,โ€ said Mr. Pendanski. โ€œI know you think youโ€™re cool.โ€ He

looked at Stanley. โ€œSo youโ€™re Caveman, now, huh? You like digging holes, Caveman?โ€

Stanley didnโ€™t know what to say.

โ€œWell, let me tell you something, Caveman. You are here on account of one person. If it wasnโ€™t for that person, you wouldnโ€™t be here digging holes in the hot sun. You know who that person is?โ€

โ€œMy no-good-dirty-rotten-pig-stealing-great-great-grandfather.โ€ The other boys howled with laughter.

Even Zero smiled.

It was the first time Stanley had ever seen Zero smile. He usually had such an angry expression on his face. Now he had such a huge smile it almost seemed too big for his face, like the smile on a jack- oโ€™-lantern.

โ€œNo,โ€ said Mr. Pendanski. โ€œThat person is you, Stanley. Youโ€™re the reason you are here. Youโ€™re responsible for yourself. You messed up your life, and itโ€™s up to you to fix it. No one else is going to do it for youโ€”for any of you.โ€

Mr. Pendanski looked from one boy to another. โ€œYouโ€™re all special in your own way,โ€ he said. โ€œYouโ€™ve all got something to offer. You have to think about what you want to do, then do it. Even you, Zero. Youโ€™re not completely worthless.โ€

The smile was now gone from Zeroโ€™s face.

โ€œWhat do you want to do with your life?โ€ Mr. Pendanski asked him.

Zeroโ€™s mouth was shut tight. As he glared at Mr. Pendanski, his dark eyes seemed to expand.

โ€œWhat about it, Zero?โ€ asked Mr. Pendanski. โ€œWhat do you like to do?โ€

โ€œI like to dig holes.โ€
