I sit in a hospital bed, staring at a police officer.
Heโs standing just outside the curtain surrounding my bed, talking to Ben. I can see them both through the crack where the fabric isnโt closed all the way.
โYou heard him say that?โ the officer asks.
โYeah,โ Ben says. โEmmett yelled something about how heโd tried to kill Lucy once.โ
I blink. My head is swimming and aching, but Iโm pretty certain Emmett said nothing like that.
โAnd Matt Gardner saw Emmett that night,โ Ben continues. โYou should ask him about that.โ
The officer nods, writing something down. He pushes the curtain aside and fixes me with a hard stare. โWeโll have more questions for you in a minute.โ
I nod numbly.
He walks away, and Ben steps inside the curtain with me. His eyebrows are drawn together, the nerves and stress obvious in the way he keeps crossing and uncrossing his arms.
โSheโs lying! Why arenโt any of you listening to me?โย Emmettโs scream is distant from down the hall somewhere.
โI could have killed you both,โ I say to Ben. He looks startled. โSorry?โ
โWhen you tossed me the hammer. I could have killed him, and then you. Your sense of self-preservation is lacking.โ
He lets out a breath of air thatโs like a laugh. โLike you said before, that would have been a better ending. You kill the real killer and the host of the
podcast trying to solve the crime. I think a lot of people would have liked that ending better.โ
I side-eye him. โThereโs something wrong with you.โ
โI know.โ He smiles. โI never thought you were going to kill me, Lucy.โ I donโt know whether I believe him.
Iโd like to, though.
โEmmett didnโt say that,โ I say after a brief silence. โWhat?โ
โYou know what. He didnโt yell anything about killing me. He told you he was innocent.โ
He shrugs.
I imitate his shrug. โThatโs it?โ
โWhatever. Itโs close enough to the truth. People are going to believe whatever I say. Your word isnโt enough.โ
โThe truth doesnโt matter.โ
Savvyโs words sound gentle this time. Less angry.
I shift my attention back to Ben. โThe truth is whatever you say it is.โ
