โYouโve been trying too hard to remember things,โ Emmett says.
Iโm out of the car. I donโt remember getting out, but now Iโm standing next to it, and Emmett is looking at me worriedly. His fingers are wrapped around my wrists.
โItโs not good for you,โ he continues. โRemember what happened last time you tried too hard? You started creating things in your head.โ
The crack of the hammer against Savvyโs skull is replaying on a loop in my brain.
Too real to be something I created.
โMatt told you I was there that night, didnโt he?โ Emmett asks. I blink. โWhat?โ
Emmettโs expression goes dark. โHe told you I was there. He promised he wouldnโt, but I should have known that asshole wouldnโt be able to keep a secret.โ He puts both hands on my cheeks. โIย would never hurt you, you know that.โ
โMatt told me you were there,โ I repeat, even though itโs a lie. Matt didnโt tell me shit.
Emmett wasย there? And Mattย knew?
โI left the wedding for like twenty minutes because I had to go home to let my dog out,โ Emmett says. โI saw you โฆ Well, you donโt want to know.โ
โYes, I do,โ I whisper.
โWe fooled around, at the wedding,โ Emmett says. โWe were โฆ Well, we kept doing that. You remember, the times before that. You and I are always making our way to each other.โ
That was one way to describe my getting drunk and kissing him twice, I guess.
โSavvy saw us, and she got really mad. I donโt know if she ever told you, but she and I had a brief fling. It was nothing, just a couple of times, but she acted really cold to me after. I think maybe she thought it was more than it was?โ
That was one way to describe Savvy avoiding him after bad sex.
โYou two left together. I decided to run home to let my dog out, and I came across Savvyโs car on the side of the road on the way out. I thought it was weird, because most of the guests took the main road out. It was supposed to rain that night, and the people at the venue had told us not to take that road, that it flooded easily. I guess she forgot.ย Iย forgot, until later that night.โ
โYou came across her car, already parked,โ I repeat.
โRight. I got out, and you two were off in the trees, yelling at each other.โ
โAbout what?โ
โI donโt know. It was too hard to follow. But you seemed really upset. She slapped you, and you scratched her. I started to intervene then, but you grabbed the tree branch and just โฆ I donโt think you meant to hit her that hard. You panicked, and started screaming, and you ran.โ
โYou forgot about my head injury,โ I say to Emmett. He drops his hands from my cheeks. โWhat?โ
โMy head injury. You forgot thatย Iย got bashed in the head too.โ
โOh.โ Something like panic flits across his expression and then disappears. โI donโt know how that happened, but you were running like a bat out of hell. You must have hit your head on something. I actually tried to chase you, but you took off.โ
โAnd you just left Savvy there to die?โ I ask.
โShe was already gone,โ he says quietly. โThere was nothing anyone could do.โ
โAnd you didnโt go to the police becauseโฆ?โ
โBecause I love you.โ His gaze is steady on mine. โI donโt care if you made a mistake once. Technically, she hit you first. And you didnโt mean to
do it. I know that.โ
โWhat did you say to him?โ I ask. The buzzing in my brain is back. Itโs hard to think. โTo Matt.โ
โI told him the truth. That I saw you kill Savvy.โ
โWhy did Iโฆโ I squeezed my eyes shut. โWhy did I run?โ โI think you were scared to face what youโd done.โ
โAnd Matt didnโt call the police either?โ
โWe wanted to take care of it ourselves. We were going to find you, but the road washed out and we couldnโt get back to find you. And then that guy found you before we could, and it just โฆ it seemed better to say nothing. You didnโt remember anyway.โ
I look up and meet his eyes. โThat must have been a real relief for you.โ His eyebrows draw together. โForย me? I was relieved for you. I never want you to remember that trauma. I was disappointed that you didnโt
remember our moment at the wedding, because we were finallyโโ โAbout to fuck next to a dumpster?โ I finish for him.
โWe were finally acknowledging our feelings for each other.โ
โI guess we were. Like when I said I didnโt care about your childhood crush, and I just wanted you to fucking leave me alone.โ
He freezes. โYou never said that.โ
โWhy did Matt believe you when you said that you saw me do it? I hit you. You didnโt have any evidence of it on your face?โ
โYou never hit me,โ he says.
โI think Savvy hit you too, but she wasnโt very good at it. She was so short, and small. She was better with knives.โ
Emmett looks startled by this.
โIย should have punched you harder. Iโve had practice.โ A knife to the gut would have been better. Savvy was right.
โLucy.โ He speaks like heโs talking to a child. โLetโs take a step back.
Youโre getting hysterical.โ I punch him in the face.
