Chapter no 50 – LUCY

Listen for the Lie

โ€œYouโ€™ve been trying too hard to remember things,โ€ Emmett says.

Iโ€™m out of the car. I donโ€™t remember getting out, but now Iโ€™m standing next to it, and Emmett is looking at me worriedly. His fingers are wrapped around my wrists.

โ€œItโ€™s not good for you,โ€ he continues. โ€œRemember what happened last time you tried too hard? You started creating things in your head.โ€

The crack of the hammer against Savvyโ€™s skull is replaying on a loop in my brain.

Too real to be something I created.

โ€œMatt told you I was there that night, didnโ€™t he?โ€ Emmett asks. I blink. โ€œWhat?โ€

Emmettโ€™s expression goes dark. โ€œHe told you I was there. He promised he wouldnโ€™t, but I should have known that asshole wouldnโ€™t be able to keep a secret.โ€ He puts both hands on my cheeks. โ€œIย would never hurt you, you know that.โ€

โ€œMatt told me you were there,โ€ I repeat, even though itโ€™s a lie. Matt didnโ€™t tell me shit.

Emmett wasย there? And Mattย knew?

โ€œI left the wedding for like twenty minutes because I had to go home to let my dog out,โ€ Emmett says. โ€œI saw you โ€ฆ Well, you donโ€™t want to know.โ€

โ€œYes, I do,โ€ I whisper.

โ€œWe fooled around, at the wedding,โ€ Emmett says. โ€œWe were โ€ฆ Well, we kept doing that. You remember, the times before that. You and I are always making our way to each other.โ€

That was one way to describe my getting drunk and kissing him twice, I guess.

โ€œSavvy saw us, and she got really mad. I donโ€™t know if she ever told you, but she and I had a brief fling. It was nothing, just a couple of times, but she acted really cold to me after. I think maybe she thought it was more than it was?โ€

That was one way to describe Savvy avoiding him after bad sex.

โ€œYou two left together. I decided to run home to let my dog out, and I came across Savvyโ€™s car on the side of the road on the way out. I thought it was weird, because most of the guests took the main road out. It was supposed to rain that night, and the people at the venue had told us not to take that road, that it flooded easily. I guess she forgot.ย Iย forgot, until later that night.โ€

โ€œYou came across her car, already parked,โ€ I repeat.

โ€œRight. I got out, and you two were off in the trees, yelling at each other.โ€

โ€œAbout what?โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t know. It was too hard to follow. But you seemed really upset. She slapped you, and you scratched her. I started to intervene then, but you grabbed the tree branch and just โ€ฆ I donโ€™t think you meant to hit her that hard. You panicked, and started screaming, and you ran.โ€

โ€œYou forgot about my head injury,โ€ I say to Emmett. He drops his hands from my cheeks. โ€œWhat?โ€

โ€œMy head injury. You forgot thatย Iย got bashed in the head too.โ€

โ€œOh.โ€ Something like panic flits across his expression and then disappears. โ€œI donโ€™t know how that happened, but you were running like a bat out of hell. You must have hit your head on something. I actually tried to chase you, but you took off.โ€

โ€œAnd you just left Savvy there to die?โ€ I ask.

โ€œShe was already gone,โ€ he says quietly. โ€œThere was nothing anyone could do.โ€

โ€œAnd you didnโ€™t go to the police becauseโ€ฆ?โ€

โ€œBecause I love you.โ€ His gaze is steady on mine. โ€œI donโ€™t care if you made a mistake once. Technically, she hit you first. And you didnโ€™t mean to

do it. I know that.โ€

โ€œWhat did you say to him?โ€ I ask. The buzzing in my brain is back. Itโ€™s hard to think. โ€œTo Matt.โ€

โ€œI told him the truth. That I saw you kill Savvy.โ€

โ€œWhy did Iโ€ฆโ€ I squeezed my eyes shut. โ€œWhy did I run?โ€ โ€œI think you were scared to face what youโ€™d done.โ€

โ€œAnd Matt didnโ€™t call the police either?โ€

โ€œWe wanted to take care of it ourselves. We were going to find you, but the road washed out and we couldnโ€™t get back to find you. And then that guy found you before we could, and it just โ€ฆ it seemed better to say nothing. You didnโ€™t remember anyway.โ€

I look up and meet his eyes. โ€œThat must have been a real relief for you.โ€ His eyebrows draw together. โ€œForย me? I was relieved for you. I never want you to remember that trauma. I was disappointed that you didnโ€™t

remember our moment at the wedding, because we were finallyโ€”โ€ โ€œAbout to fuck next to a dumpster?โ€ I finish for him.

โ€œWe were finally acknowledging our feelings for each other.โ€

โ€œI guess we were. Like when I said I didnโ€™t care about your childhood crush, and I just wanted you to fucking leave me alone.โ€

He freezes. โ€œYou never said that.โ€

โ€œWhy did Matt believe you when you said that you saw me do it? I hit you. You didnโ€™t have any evidence of it on your face?โ€

โ€œYou never hit me,โ€ he says.

โ€œI think Savvy hit you too, but she wasnโ€™t very good at it. She was so short, and small. She was better with knives.โ€

Emmett looks startled by this.

โ€œIย should have punched you harder. Iโ€™ve had practice.โ€ A knife to the gut would have been better. Savvy was right.

โ€œLucy.โ€ He speaks like heโ€™s talking to a child. โ€œLetโ€™s take a step back.

Youโ€™re getting hysterical.โ€ I punch him in the face.
