Chapter no 48 – LUCY

Listen for the Lie

I squeeze my eyes shut, trying to make the rest of the memory come into focus.

But itโ€™s fading. Savvyโ€™s laugh, her smile, start to drift away, and all I have left is an ache in my chest.

We were going to leave Plumpton, together. I can see Savvy in L.A. She would have loved the beach and hated the traffic. We probably would have shared an apartment.

I canโ€™t breathe, thinking about what could have been.

What the hell? What the hell? What the hell?ย Savvyโ€™s words go round and round in my head. Sheโ€™s in front of me, smiling as blood drips down her face. Iโ€™m trying too hard.

Through the storefront window, I can see Nina standing in front of Emmett, arms crossed over her chest. His face is red, angry. Heโ€™s yelling at her.

He left the wedding. I blink as I rememberโ€”I clearly saw his face as he turned his truck onto the road to leave.

I grab my phone from my purse. Ben picks up on the first ring. โ€œHey, Lucy.โ€

โ€œDidnโ€™t Emmett say he stayed at the wedding until it ended?โ€ โ€œWhat? Uh โ€ฆ yeah. Wait, wait, can I record this?โ€

โ€œFine, whatever. Justโ€”โ€

โ€œHold on. Okay. Ask that again.โ€

โ€œEmmett said he stayed until the wedding ended?โ€

โ€œYeah. Wedding went until three a.m. People saw him there. He helped organize rides for people to get home.โ€

โ€œNo one remembers him leaving and coming back?โ€

โ€œNo. He said he was there the whole time.โ€

โ€œI remember him leaving. Right before Savvy and I left.โ€ Thereโ€™s a long pause. โ€œAre you sure?โ€

โ€œYes. I got in the car with Savvy, and I clearly saw him driving past us, down that dirt road that leads to the highway. He saw me too. Our eyes met.โ€

โ€œLucy, do you remember what happened?โ€

โ€œIt โ€ฆ itโ€™s coming back in bits and pieces. I remember parts of the wedding, and I remember getting in the car with her. We were talking about leaving. Going to Los Angeles together.โ€

โ€œWere you fighting orโ€ฆ?โ€

โ€œNo. We werenโ€™t. We were happy.โ€ My breath catches in my throat. โ€œLetโ€™s go back there. Now. Itโ€™s dark out; maybe that will help. Where

are you?โ€

โ€œIโ€™m outside the art shop.โ€ My words come out breathless. Through the store window, Emmett gestures angrily.

I see Nina flinch. She draws her arms into her body, turns her face away, and squeezes her eyes shut.

Iโ€™ve done that.

I know that pose.

Itโ€™s what you do when youโ€™re bracing to be hit. โ€œLucy?โ€ Ben says.

Emmett doesnโ€™t hit her. He grabs both her wrists. โ€œWhy are you at the art shop?โ€

โ€œBecause Emmettโ€ฆโ€ I trail off. I can tell that Emmett is holding Ninaโ€™s wrists too tightly. Tears are streaming down her face, and sheโ€™s trying to pull free of his grasp.

โ€œHeโ€™s hurting her,โ€ I say quietly. I should move. I should help. โ€œEmmett? Whoโ€™s he hurting?โ€

Nina breaks free. She bolts from the shop and practically dives into her car. I watch in the rearview mirror as it disappears around the corner.

A knock on the window makes me jump. Itโ€™s Emmett.

And now I remember.

โ€Œ

LUCYโ€Œ

FIVE YEARS AGO

โ€œWhat the hell?โ€ Savvy asked, squinting in the darkness.

I leaned forward. A truck was parked in the middle of the road. A tall figure stood in front of it. Savvyโ€™s headlights caught his face.

Emmett.

She slowed to a stop, rolling down her window. She put a hand out like,

What the hell?

Emmett walked over to my side of the car. I rolled down my window. โ€œCan I talk to you?โ€ The words were breathless, a plea. I was having a

hard time reconciling the Emmett Iโ€™d known since I was a kid with the version Savvy told me about. This Emmett had his fists clenched at his sides, his eyes wild and desperate as he looked down at me.

โ€œDude, now?โ€ Savvy said, exasperated. โ€œCanโ€™t it wait until tomorrow?โ€ Emmett ignored her. โ€œPlease?โ€

I sighed, reaching for the door handle. โ€œSure. Savvy, itโ€™s fine, Emmett can drive me home.โ€ I looked at him for confirmation, and his face brightened. He nodded.

โ€œNo, itโ€™s cool,โ€ she said. โ€œI can wait.โ€

She said it like there wasnโ€™t room for argument, and I caught Emmettโ€™s annoyed eye roll. I climbed out of the car and shut the door behind me. It smelled like rain, and it was actually a little cool for May.

Emmett walked away from the car, a few steps into the thick trees around the road. I glanced back. I could still see Savvy sitting in the driverโ€™s seat, peering at us.

โ€œIโ€™m sorry, I know this is weird, but I had to talk to you.โ€ He squinted, putting a hand up over his eyes. โ€œSheโ€™s really not going to turn those off?โ€

He stepped further into the trees, away from Savvyโ€™s headlights.

โ€œI probably shouldnโ€™t have run away like that,โ€ I said, following him into the trees. The moon was full, and Savvyโ€™s headlights were still providing some light. I could see his face clearly. His eyes were wide, a little desperate.

โ€œNo, I shouldnโ€™t haveโ€ฆโ€ He trailed off, shaking his head. โ€œI shouldnโ€™t have kissed you. I got carried away. You just have to understand, Lucy, Iโ€™m crazy about you.โ€

I swallowed. Even if Savvy hadnโ€™t just told me what she did, I didnโ€™t think I would have reacted to this revelation with excitement. It was too hard to imagine anything after Matt.

I was a mess, and I didnโ€™t need Emmettโ€™s feelings on top of everything. โ€œIโ€™ve been crazy about you, for years,โ€ Emmett continued, oblivious. โ€œI

know that Matt is an asshole to you, and heโ€™s cheating on you. You know that, right? That heโ€™s cheating on you?โ€

โ€œI know,โ€ I said.

He took a step closer to me. โ€œLeave him. Be with me. I love you. Iโ€™ve loved you since we were kids.โ€

He grabbed me around the waist and kissed me. It was sloppy, like he was trying to devour my face. I pushed him away.

โ€œI canโ€™t, Iโ€™m sorry.โ€ I took a step back.

He immediately grabbed me again. โ€œYes, you can. I know you think that you have the perfect life in that house, but I know how unhappy you are. I know that you donโ€™t actually love him. That you never have. I know you feel like you have to stay and project this image of the perfect wife, but you donโ€™t. Let me help you.โ€

It was strange how he seemed to have taken a sliver of truth and crafted a whole narrative for me. A narrative where he could rescue me. I certainly was unhappy, but Iย hadย loved Matt. It was why I hated him so much. Because Iโ€™d been madly in love with him at one point, and he hadnโ€™t beaten it all out of me yet.

And I didnโ€™t think Iโ€™d ever been trying to project the image of a perfect wife. I was doing a piss-poor job of it, honestly.

โ€œI canโ€™t,โ€ I said again. โ€œIโ€™m sorry. Youโ€™re right that Matt and I arenโ€™t happy, but I canโ€™t jump into something else right now.โ€

โ€œIโ€™ll wait for you,โ€ he said in a rush. โ€œIf you need time. Please, Lucy, justโ€”โ€ He didnโ€™t finish. He cut himself off by kissing me again. I wasnโ€™t sure what he meant by โ€œIโ€™ll waitโ€ if he was going to immediately kiss me again.

โ€œEmmett, stop.โ€ I pushed him away again. โ€œThis isnโ€™t going to happen, okay? Iโ€™m sorry.โ€

All the hope drained from his face. โ€œWhat?โ€

โ€œIโ€™m not, I donโ€™t โ€ฆ I donโ€™t feel that way about you. Weโ€™ve been friends forever, we shouldnโ€™tโ€”โ€

โ€œYou donโ€™t feel that way about me? Why do you keep kissing me then?โ€ โ€œIโ€™m sorry, Iโ€”โ€

โ€œYou wouldnโ€™t keep kissing me if you didnโ€™t feel something!โ€ His voice had an angry edge to it now.

โ€œOkay, time to go!โ€ Savvy yelled. I heard her car door slam, and she appeared through the trees a moment later.

I felt a rush of gratitude that sheโ€™d ignored me when I said Emmett could drive me home.

โ€œFor fuckโ€™s sake, Savvy, would you stop sticking your nose in our business?โ€ Emmett snapped. โ€œWeโ€™re having a conversation here.โ€

โ€œIt sounded more like you were yelling at her.โ€ โ€œI wasnโ€™t yelling at her, Iโ€™m just tryingโ€”โ€

โ€œItโ€™s fine,โ€ I interrupted. โ€œCan we just continue this tomorrow, Emmett?

Itโ€™s late, and Iโ€™ve had a lot to drink.โ€

โ€œYou donโ€™t need to continue anything,โ€ Savvy said. โ€œShe said no, dude.

Accept it.โ€

Emmettโ€™s nostrils flared. โ€œNo one was talking to you. Just let Lucy and meโ€”โ€

โ€œGet it through your thick skull, asshole. No. Complete sentence.โ€ She looped her arm through mine, tugging gently.

โ€œNo. Weโ€™re not done.โ€ Emmett grabbed my other hand, roughly pulling me away from Savvy. He had a vise grip on my arm, and I winced.

โ€œYou did not just do that!โ€ Savvy planted her hands on Emmettโ€™s chest and shoved, hard. He stumbled back but didnโ€™t let go of me.

โ€œDonโ€™t touch me,โ€ he growled. โ€œLet her go.โ€

โ€œNo.โ€

โ€œEmmett, please let me go,โ€ I said, trying desperately to stay calm. My brain was flashingย Danger, dangerย at me.

My fists curled, almost against my will. I was ready to fight. Iโ€™d been here so many times with Matt.

โ€œMy god, you are such a dick,โ€ Savvy yelled. โ€œJust let her go!โ€ โ€œJust fucking mind your own business for once, you stupid littleโ€”โ€

I punched him. My fist connected with his jaw. Iโ€™d had some practice with Matt, but it still wasnโ€™t the best punch. I lost my balance, and it didnโ€™t land as hard as Iโ€™d intended.

Still, he stumbled back, sputtering, and released my arm. Wasnโ€™t used to taking a hit like Matt was.

โ€œI said no!โ€ I was screaming. I hadnโ€™t meant to, but it felt like my brain had short-circuited. I wasnโ€™t fully in control. โ€œI donโ€™t want your fucking help! I donโ€™t care about your stupid childhood crush!โ€

Emmett gaped at me. I was shaking as I turned away. Savvy gave me a thoroughly impressed look.

โ€œTime to go,โ€ she said, and then laughed.

I glanced back at Emmett in time to see him lunge at me.
