Chapter no 38 – LUCY

Listen for the Lie

Ben wants to meet at Grandmaโ€™s again, and heโ€™s waiting for me on the porch when I pull up in front of the tiny pink house. He strolls over to me as I get out of the car, tossing his dark hair out of his eyes in a way that seems practiced. Like he rehearsed being sexy in a mirror.

โ€œWhy are you always here?โ€ I ask. โ€œIโ€™m not always here.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re not fucking meย andย my grandma, are you? That would really bum me out.โ€

โ€œI am not fucking your grandma. Honestly, I donโ€™t think Beverly could fit me into the rotation. She has a lot of men coming around.โ€ His tone is teasing, and I step away from him when it looks like heโ€™s going to lean in. Iโ€™d rather my grandma not know about this particular poor life choice.

โ€œCome on.โ€ I head toward the house. โ€œIt feels like Satanโ€™s asshole out here.โ€

He follows me into the house, where heโ€™s already set up his podcasting equipment on the table. Grandma is on the couch, scrolling through her phone. She wears an old, faded T-shirt tucked into a full red skirt, and I marvel again at how much cooler my grandma is than I am.

โ€œIs this now our designated interview spot?โ€ I plop down in one of the chairs.

โ€œItโ€™s quiet. And Beverly doesnโ€™t mind.โ€ He smiles at her. I was only half kidding when I asked whether they were fucking.

โ€œHe likes that youโ€™re more relaxed here,โ€ Grandma says without looking up from her phone.

Ben appears startled, like that was something that Grandma inferred on her own.

I take it back. My grandmother is too smart to sleep with Ben Owens.

Itโ€™s too bad common sense isnโ€™t genetic.

โ€œI was hoping we could delve deeper into your relationship with Nina today.โ€ Ben slides into the seat next to me.

I sigh, looking past his head, out the window to the empty field behind the house. A breeze blows through the tall weeds. Ben looks over his shoulder and then back at me.

I havenโ€™t told him about my conversation with Keaton and Emmett. He doesnโ€™t know that Matt and Nina are still sleeping together.

I havenโ€™t told Ben a lot of things about Nina.

โ€œShe yelled at me while I was holding a knife,โ€ Savvy whispers in my ear. โ€œShe probably wouldnโ€™t have done that if she knew all the fun things Iโ€™ve done with knives.โ€

I laughed when she said that to me. I canโ€™t even remember exactly why Nina and Savvy didnโ€™t like each other. Iโ€™m not even sure that anyone besides me knows how much they truly despised each other.

โ€œLucy?โ€ Ben says.

Nina didnโ€™t like Savvy. So what? I donโ€™t like lots of people. It never seemed relevant.

It still probably isnโ€™t relevant. And if I say it, Iโ€™m doing to Nina what they all did to meโ€”making accusations that will haunt her forever. I should lie, or dance delicately about the truth, like the other people Ben has interviewed have done.

Because she couldnโ€™t have done it. My brain isnโ€™t letting that scenario even take shape in my head. Iโ€™ve imagined killing so many people, and yet I canโ€™t put an object in Ninaโ€™s hand and watch her smash it against Savvyโ€™s head.

โ€œHon?โ€ Grandma touches my arm. She and Ben are hovering, looking at me with concern.

โ€œI donโ€™t want to,โ€ I say softly.

The wrinkles around Grandmaโ€™s eyes crinkle as she squints at me. โ€œYou donโ€™t want to what?โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t want to talk about Nina.โ€ โ€œBut sheโ€”โ€ Ben starts.

โ€œCan you just give me a day?โ€ I push a hand through my hair. โ€œSurely you have something else we can talk about today.โ€ A text message pops up on my phone, and I angle the screen toward me so I can read it. My stomach drops to my feet. โ€œFuck.โ€

โ€œWhat?โ€ Grandma asks.

โ€œThe internet figured out that Iโ€™m Eva Knightley.โ€

Listen for the Lie Podcast with Ben Owens

EPISODE 6โ€”โ€œNINAโ€

When I first reached out to her, Nina Garcia was hesitant to talk to me.

Nina:ย Yeah, I donโ€™t know. I felt weird about it.

Ben:ย Weird?

Nina:ย Yeah, you know โ€ฆ this case has already gotten a lot of attention. Everyone knows that Lucyโ€”

Ben:ย Everyone knows that Lucyโ€ฆ?

Nina:ย Um. Everyoneย thinksย that Lucy did it. But I was talking to Emmettโ€”you know Emmett, right? Me and Lucy and him were all best friends in high school?

Ben:ย Yeah, weโ€™ve talked.

Nina:ย He thought I should. I just feel bad because I like โ€ฆ I didnโ€™t really even know Savvy.

Ben:ย You two went to high school together. In a pretty small town.

Nina:ย Sure, but we didnโ€™t like โ€ฆ hang out.

Ben:ย Okay. But you knew Lucy well. This podcast is as much about her as it is about Savannah. And Iโ€™ve heard you know Matt fairly well?

Nina:ย I mean, a little, I guess. Weโ€™re friendly.

Ben:ย Why donโ€™t we start at the beginning. What was Lucy likeโ€”

Nina:ย Iโ€™m sorry, can we stop for a minute?

Ben:ย Why?

Nina:ย I just โ€ฆ I need a minute.

Nina was frequently nervous in our interviews, which isnโ€™t unusual. Talking about the murder of someone you knewโ€”even just casuallyโ€”is difficult. I know this.

But when I began going through her interviews, I found some inconsistencies. Hereโ€™s Stephanie Gantz again.

Ben:ย I found this yearbook photo. Of Nina and Savannah?

Stephanie:ย Oh yeah, thatโ€™s junior year, I think?ย Ben:ย They were on student council together?ย Stephanie:ย Yeah.

Ben:ย Iโ€™ve heard they didnโ€™t really know each other.

Stephanie:ย I wouldnโ€™t say that. They werenโ€™t friends. I think they fought over a boy once, like freshman year? Ugh. I hate that, but we were young. The feminism hadnโ€™t kicked in yet.

Ben:ย Sure. So, they didnโ€™t like each other, then?

Stephanie:ย It wasnโ€™t anything dramatic by that point, but no, not really.

Ben:ย By that point?

Stephanie:ย There was definitely some drama freshman year.

Ben:ย What kind of drama?

Stephanie:ย Just โ€ฆ like I said, there was a boy. I think Savvy โ€ฆ I think she sort of mean-girled Nina a bit. It blew over, and Savvy wasnโ€™t like that at all later, but, you know. We were fourteen.

Ben:ย Did Lucy know there was history with Nina and Savannah?

Stephanie: She must have. Nina was her best friend back then.

Ben:ย Did you think it was weird, when Lucy became such good friends with Savannah later?

Stephanie:ย Nah, we were all adults by that point. If youโ€™re going to hold grudges about things from when you were a kid, youโ€™re gonna spend your whole life angry, you know?

Ben:ย Do you know how Nina felt about it?

Stephanie:ย Uh โ€ฆ she might have said something catty about it.ย Ben:ย So Ninaย wasย holding grudges from when she was a kid?ย Stephanie:ย Maybe. Yeah.
