Chapter no 77 – GIGI

The Grandest Game

Pain.ย Gigi was vaguely aware of the world around her trying to go black, but she was more aware of the fact that her team hadnโ€™t made it to the dock yet.ย Sheย hadnโ€™t. Gigi scrambled to her feetโ€”or she tried to, anyway, but then she wobbled and went down again.

Suddenly, Knox was kneeling beside her. โ€œYou okay, Happy?โ€

Knox.ย Gigi looked for Brady, but she didnโ€™t see him. She blinked. โ€œIt was just a little boulder. Itโ€™s just a little head wound. Iโ€™m fine!โ€

Fuzzy Knoxโ€”he was only a little bit fuzzyโ€”did not seem to believe her. He slipped an arm under hers, and the next thing Gigi knew, Knox was carrying her and walking slowly toward the dock.

Knox. Not Brady.ย Brady hadnโ€™t come back for her. Gigi thought about Savannah telling her that no one in this competition was her friend, that no one could be trusted.

Knox had said the exact same thing.

And that was when Gigi belatedly realized:ย Slowly?ย Knox was walkingย slowlyย toward the dock. Toward the other teams. Toward Avery, Jameson, Xander, and Nash, who stood at the edge of the dock in a line.

Slowly.ย Gigi looked back to the eastern horizon and saw the sun.ย Dawn.

Her throat tightened.ย We didnโ€™t make it.ย Theyโ€™d been so close.

If sheโ€™d been faster with the puzzle boxโ€ฆ If she hadnโ€™t fallenโ€ฆ

If she was smarter and coordinated andย better, if she was more like

Savannahโ€”

If,ย if,ย if. โ€œIโ€™m sorry,โ€ she told Knox.

Donโ€™t be.ย That was what Brady had said to her the last time sheโ€™d apologized for being herself. For being too much.ย My brain likesย A Lot.

โ€œYeah, Happy,โ€ Knox said, stepping past the game makers and onto the dock. โ€œMe, too.โ€

Gigi saw Brady then. He was holding the longsword. Sheโ€™d forgotten about the sword.

โ€œBrady,โ€ Gigi said, remembering what was at stake for him, berating herself for being selfish enough to wonder why heโ€™d run for the dock instead of coming back forย her. โ€œYour mom. I promiseโ€”โ€

โ€œItโ€™s okay,โ€ Brady told her quietly. โ€œMy mamaโ€™s fine.โ€

Gigi went very still in Knoxโ€™s arms. โ€œFine?โ€ Gigi couldnโ€™t make that make sense. โ€œShe doesnโ€™t have cancer?โ€

He lied to us? Brady lied.

โ€œPut her down, Knox,โ€ Brady said.

โ€œYou werenโ€™t entirely lying.โ€ Knox didnโ€™t put Gigi down. โ€œI would have known. So whoย doesย have cancer?โ€

โ€œSeverin,โ€ Brady said after a long moment, โ€œhad cancer.โ€ Knox stared at Brady, hard.ย โ€œHad?โ€

โ€œPancreatic. It was quick. And, like I said, he sends his regards.โ€

Heโ€™s dead? Their mentorโ€ฆย Gigi tried to make sense of that, too, but the next thing she knew, Grayson was stepping right up to Knox and repeating Bradyโ€™s suggestionโ€”except coming from Grayson, it wasnโ€™t a suggestion.

โ€œPut her down.โ€

This time, a stone-faced Knox complied.

โ€œYouโ€™re injured, Gigi.โ€ Graysonโ€™s tone made it clear: That was unacceptable.

โ€œWho among us is not occasionally concussed?โ€ Gigi replied, the responseโ€”and her smileโ€”automatic, no matter the thoughts dogging her brain.

Brady lied. Severinโ€™s dead. Knox is not okay.

โ€œOur team is out of the game.โ€ Knox turned toward Avery Grambs. โ€œGo ahead. Say it. Weโ€™ve been eliminated.โ€

Avery ignored Knox in favor of coming to stand next to Grayson. She took Gigiโ€™s hand. โ€œAre you okay?โ€

Gigi couldnโ€™t help feeling like Avery was asking about more than her head.

Iโ€™m not. Iโ€™m really, really not.ย Gigi couldnโ€™t beat back that thought, no matter how hard she smiled.

Avery had tried to give her a ticket to this game, but Gigi had won her own way. Sheโ€™d wanted to prove something. Sheโ€™d wanted to be smart and capable andย strong.

Gigi looked past Avery and Grayson, past Brady and Knox, to Savannah.

The sight of her twinโ€™s hairโ€”jagged and shornโ€”took Gigiโ€™s breath away.

Savannah didnโ€™t look like Savannah anymore.

Avery squeezed Gigiโ€™s hand, then took a step back, Xander, Nash, and Jameson falling in around her. Grayson stayed right where he was, an arm wrapping protectively around Gigiโ€™s shoulders.

โ€œDiamonds and Hearts,โ€ Avery said. โ€œYouโ€™re on to the next phase of the game. Clubsโ€ฆ thereโ€™s always next year.โ€

โ€œOnce a player, always a player,โ€ Jameson said, addressing those words directly to Gigi.

She couldnโ€™t bring herself to look at Brady or Knox. Instead, Gigi looked out at the horizon.ย I should tell Avery and the others about the bug. I should tell them that Code Name Mimosas is here.

Iโ€™m going to tell them. Right now.

There was no reasonย notย to tell them anymore. But what came out of Gigiโ€™s mouth was: โ€œDo we have to leave the island immediately?โ€

Gigi couldnโ€™t keep her thoughts from drifting to the thorny brush where sheโ€™d found that bag.

โ€œYou can take some time to say your good-byes,โ€ Avery told her. โ€œGet some rest, if you need it. The boat for the mainland leaves at noon.โ€

โ€œIโ€™ll fix you up, kid,โ€ Nash told Gigi, an offer and an order both, as he displaced Grayson at her side, the way only Graysonโ€™s older brother could.

Gigi brought her hand to the throbbing knot on her forehead. There was only a little blood.

โ€œWhat about the rest of us?โ€ That was Savannah, her voice piercing the morning air, and Gigi couldnโ€™t help thinking that every other time sheโ€™d ever ended up probably concussed, her twin had been the one checking her over, fixing her up.

But not now.

Right now, Savannah was wearing her game face. โ€œWhatโ€™s next for those of us who successfully made it to the dock by dawn?โ€
