Chapter no 61 – LYRA

The Grandest Game

Twelve dollhouse books. Twelve numbers. A code.ย Gigiโ€™s brain raced like a hyperactive greyhound.ย A substitution cipher? Numbers for letters?ย The digits ranged from fifteen to one hundred sixty-two, with no repeats.ย Coordinates? Some kind of combination?

โ€œDewey decimal system?โ€ Brady murmured beside her.

Knox crossed to the shelves and began examining row after row of books. โ€œNo numbers on the spines, no way to look them up.โ€

Gigi picked up one of the tiny plastic dollhouse books and turned it in her hand. She spotted whatย mightย have been teeny tiny writing on the spine. A jolt of energy shot through her veins like eight cups of coffeeโ€”or a single mimosa.

โ€œThe magnifying glass!โ€ Gigi ran to grab it. The ornate silver and gold handle was cool to the touch. Angling the glass toward the miniature book in her hand, Gigi was able to read the title.ย โ€œDavid Copperfield.โ€

Brady crouched to gather the rest of the books, then joined her, cradling all eleven of the remaining dollhouse books in his hands. Gigi took one of them from him, her fingers brushing his outstretched palm.

โ€œRebecca,โ€ Gigi read. And on it went:ย Coraline,ย Anna Karenina,ย Carrie,ย Peter Pan.ย Matildaย andย Jane Eyreย andย Robinson Crusoe.

โ€œKing Lear,โ€ Gigi said, and she wondered if she was imagining the way Bradyโ€™s gaze lingered on her face. On her lips.

โ€œTheyโ€™re all names.โ€ That was Knox. He wasnโ€™t looking at Gigi. He was

looking at Brady. Hard.

Gigi focused on the books. The pattern held for the last two:ย Oliver Twistย andย Emma.

Twelve books. Twelve titles. All names. And numbers.

Gigi bounced lightly on her toes, thinking. โ€œWhy would they give us the titles?โ€ She looked upโ€”at the shelves overhead and all around them. โ€œWeโ€™re in theย library.โ€ Her eyes widened. โ€œBooks and books. Little ones, big ones.โ€ She bounded for the shelf sheโ€™d searched earlier. โ€œI think I remember seeingย Emma.โ€

โ€œEmma,โ€ Brady murmured. โ€œNumber on the back is fifteen.โ€

Gigiโ€™s brain took off like a rocket, and the second she found the real copy ofย Emma, she flipped to page fifteen.

And there it was.

Knox crossed the room to stand directly behind her and read over her shoulder. โ€œUnderlined words,โ€ he said. โ€œThree of them.โ€

โ€œLess,ย let, andย looks,โ€ Gigi read. She stated the obvious: โ€œThey all start with L.โ€ It took her five minutes to find another book from the list.ย โ€œJane Eyre.โ€

โ€œThirty-four,โ€ Brady said without even having to look.

On page thirty-four ofย Jane Eyre, Gigi found five underlined words. โ€œScarlet,ย china,ย candle,ย crib,ย scarecrow,โ€ she reported.

โ€œC.โ€ Bradyโ€™s voice was low in volume, calm, sure. Gigi looked back at him.

โ€œThe only letter that appears in all of those words,โ€ Brady Daniels, recognizer of patterns said, โ€œisย C.โ€

โ€œIโ€™ve gotย Rebecca,โ€ Knox said from the other side of the room. โ€œWhatโ€™s the page number?โ€

Brady answered, his voice clipped. โ€œSeventy-two.โ€

And so it went, book after book. The moment they decoded the last one, Gigi closed her eyes, pulling up the entire sequence in her mind.

L,ย C,ย R,ย E,ย E,ย T,ย I,ย H,ย B,ย P,ย O,ย M.

โ€œStart by pulling theย T, theย H, and theย E,โ€ Gigi said automatically.ย The.

That left nine letters:ย L,ย C,ย R,ย E,ย I,ย B,ย P,ย O, andย M. โ€œPrime?โ€ Knox muttered. โ€œOrย primo?โ€

โ€œRope,โ€ Brady tried.

โ€œRope,โ€ Gigi repeated, opening her eyes to find his on her. โ€œThat leaves

five letters.โ€ย L,ย C,ย I,ย B,ย M. โ€œClimb,โ€ she said.

Knox beat Brady to putting the phrase together.ย โ€œClimb the rope.โ€

The instant the words were spoken out loud, a stained-glass panel on the ceiling swung down like a trapdoor, creating an opening overhead.

And down fell a rope.
