Images flashed rapid-fire through Gigiโs brain.ย The wetsuit. The oxygen tank. The necklace. The knife.ย She thought back to her altercation with Knox over the bagโand then to what Brady had said about sponsors.
They hire players, stack the deck where they can, bet on the outcome.
What if the bag Gigi had foundย wasnโtย a part of the game? Not a sanctioned one, anyway. Knox hadnโt brought it back to the house, where Avery and the Hawthornes might have seen it.
What if that bag and its contents were Knoxโs so-called sponsorโs way ofย stacking the deck? What if that was what heโd meant when heโd said it wasย his? What if Knox had known where the bag was stashed the whole time, and it was just his bad luck that sheโd happened to stumble upon it?
You cheating cheater who cheats.ย Gigi stormed back to the chamber to find Brady and Knox avoiding eye contact with each other. For all she knew, they hadnโt said a word while she was gone.
Brady was holding the sword again.
โFamily therapy,โ Gigi told them. โOr, I guess, found-family therapy.
Think about it.โ
If either of them heard the deadly tone in her voice, they gave no sign of
it.
โIn unrelated news: You have a lot of explaining to do, Shady Brows.โ
Gigi held the listening device up between her middle finger and thumb. โI found this delightful little bug in my necklaceโthe necklace that was in the
bag with the knife and all the rest of it.โ She jabbed the Pointy Finger of Accusation at Knox. โThe bag thatย youย stole and didnโt bring back to this house, because you didnโt want anyone to see it.โ
โBecause I didnโt want anyone toย stealย it.โ Knoxโs correction was only somewhat barbed.
Gigi turned toward Brady. โTell me more about sponsors. Aboutย Knoxโs sponsor.โ
Bradyโs reply and his expression were measured. โThe Thorp family owns a third of the state of Louisianaโmore than that if you count the illegitimate branches of the family.โ Brady shifted his steady gaze from Gigi to Knox. โKnoxโs sponsor is a man named Orion Thorp.โ
โThis is asinine.โ Knoxโs tone wasnโt measured at all. โNeither my villainous sponsor nor I had anything to do with that bag.โ He met Bradyโs gaze. โAm I telling the truth, Daniels?โ
There was a long silence. โHe is,โ Brady said finally. โTelling the truth.โ Gigi wanted to argue, but she couldnโt. She believed that Brady knew Knox well enough to know if Knox was lying, and she believed Brady
when he said that Knox wasnโt.
She couldnโtย notย believe Brady.
So she changed course. โI know youโre out there.โ She spoke directly into the bug. โI know youโre listening.โ
It was something sheโd gotten into the habit of saying a year and a half earlierโon rooftops, in parking lots, every single evening, looking out into the night.ย I know youโre out there.ย Because if there wasnโt anyone there, then no one would ever know, but if thereย wasย someone watching her, following her, then Gigi wanted that person to know that he couldnโt hide from her, no matter how much he cloaked himself in shadow.
In her defense, sheโd been followed before. By a professional. โWhat are you doing?โ Knox was bewilderedโand pissed.
Gigi ignored him and tried again. โI know youโre out there.โ When there was no replyโthe device probably doesnโt even work both waysโshe turned to Brady. โYou said there were rich families, plural, who had taken an interest in the Grandest Game.โ
Brady gave a little nod. โI believe most of the interested parties were contemporaries or rivals of Tobias Hawthorne.โ
Rivals?ย That felt a bitโฆ ominous.
โWhat makes you so sure,โ Knox asked Gigi, โthat the thing in your hand is a bug? And that itโs not a part of the game?โ
โI live a life of stealth and crime,โ Gigi replied pertly. โI know a bug when I see one, and I am spontaneouslyโbut also incrediblyโsure that the game makers didnโt hide a bag on the island containing a whole slew of capital-O Objects.โ
It was so obvious now that sheโd seen it. Sheโd thought that sheโd hit the motherlode, but in a game that was meant to be competitiveโand fairโ why would thereย beย a motherlode?
โNash told me he liked my necklace,โ Gigi continued, her thoughts racing to catch up with her mouth. โI thought he was commenting on it as a kind of congratulations, you know,ย well done, you tricksy Gigi. But what if he thought it was my necklace? That Iโd worn it to the island?โ Gigiโs thoughts werenโt just racing now. They were trying to qualify for the Indy
500. โAnd when Avery mentioned on the beach that some players had found hidden treasure, she looked at Odette, and she looked at Savannah, but I donโt think she ever looked at me.โ
There was a single momentโs silence. โIf youโre correctโฆโ Bradyโs brow furrowed in what Gigi couldnโt help noticing was a highly attractive way. โIf the Objects you found arenโt a part of the gameโโ
โThe wetsuit inside the bag,โ Knox cut in abruptly. โIt was damp.โ โRecently used.โ Gigi swallowed. What did that mean?
โMaybe Knox isnโt the only player in this game who has a sponsor.โ Brady didnโt stop there. โAnd maybe the players and the game makers arenโt the only ones on Hawthorne Island.โ
