Epilogue

The Undead Next Door

Three weeks laterโ€ฆ

On the drive home from the wedding, Heather realized that she now led a dual life. Living in two worlds had meant they needed two wedding receptions.

Both mortals and Vamps had attended the small wedding at Heatherโ€™s church. While the Vamps had discreetly left, Heatherโ€™s mortal friends had gathered in the churchโ€™s fellowship hall for wedding cake and punch.

Jean-Luc had happily shoved a piece of wedding cake into Heatherโ€™s mouth, but sheโ€™d purposely missed his mouth, smearing it on his cheek.

Everyone had laughed, never realizing that Jean-Luc had not eaten any cake at all. Then Heather tossed the bouquet over her shoulder.

โ€œHe scores!โ€ Coach Gunter caught the bouquet and lifted both arms up, signifying a touchdown.

Heather and Jean-Luc made an early exit to the limousine parked out front. Her friends thought they were rushing off to catch a plane, but their next stop was the Vamp reception at the studio.

Heather understood why the Vamps wanted to party in private. How else could they drink Bubbly Blood and perform old dances like the

minuet? She was actually looking forward to the dances. Jean-Luc had spent the last few weeks teaching her the steps when he wasnโ€™t busy making love to her or overseeing the production of her wedding dress.

She smoothed out the ivory silk, trying not to crush the skirt in the back of the limo. โ€œItโ€™s the most beautiful wedding gown ever.โ€

โ€œFor the most beautiful bride ever.โ€ Jean-Luc kissed her cheek, then nuzzled her ear. โ€œI plan to ravish you thoroughly tonight.โ€

โ€œShh.โ€ Heather didnโ€™t want her daughter to overhear.

Bethany was busily opening and shutting all the cabinets in the limo.

She looked adorable in the blue flower girl dress Heather had made for her.

Fidelia, the matron of honor, had scooted down the seat to the window behind the chauffeur. She knocked on the glass. โ€œHola, Roberto!โ€

The limo sped up.

Heather chuckled. Poor Robby.

They pulled to a stop in front of Jean-Lucโ€™s studioโ€”their home, Heather corrected herself. Robby opened the door so they could get out. Fidelia fussed behind her, making sure the long train of her skirt was perfect.

โ€œReady?โ€ Jean-Luc took her hand.

โ€œYes.โ€ She climbed the steps with Jean-Luc as Robby opened the door. The showroom was bright with light gleaming off the polished marble.

The room had been cleared for the reception. A few round tables lined the walls, topped with white tablecloths and bouquets of flowers. There was a small buffet of real food, punch, and champagne for the few mortals in attendance, plus another table covered with champagne flutes and Bubbly Blood chilling in ice buckets.

The center of the room was left empty for dancing. A band called the High Voltage Vamps had teleported in from New York and were set up

beneath the catwalk. Cascades of voile and flowers hung from the catwalk, leaving the air scented with roses and gardenias.

It wasnโ€™t a surprise to Heather since sheโ€™d helped with all the plans and decorations, but she still felt a thrill upon seeing it. It was perfect.

Vamps lined up to meet her. Her worries that they might not approve of her melted away. Angus and Emma MacKay were first in line, and both

gave her a big hug. They invited her and Jean-Luc to use their castle in Scotland whenever they liked. Next in line was a handsome Italian Vamp named Giacomo. He kissed her cheeks and invited them to visit his palazzo in Venice. A few more of Jean-Lucโ€™s coven members from Western Europe had made the trip.

โ€œI see that Simone and Inga didnโ€™t make it,โ€ Heather whispered to Jean- Luc. The two models had teleported back to Paris after the runway show.

He grinned. โ€œWhat a shame.โ€

โ€œDid you ever find out where Simone was sneaking off to at night?โ€

Jean-Luc nodded, still smiling. โ€œYou wonโ€™t believe it. She was fishing.โ€ โ€œFor men?โ€

He laughed. โ€œFor fish. In the river. Apparently she likes to fish, but doesnโ€™t want to admit it.โ€

โ€œWeird.โ€ Heather figured Simone liked stabbing the worms with the hook. She was suddenly grabbed for a big hug.

โ€œIโ€™m so thrilled for you!โ€ Shanna Draganesti squeezed her, then stepped back. โ€œIโ€™ve never seen Jean-Luc so happy. Youโ€™re good for him.โ€

Heather felt her eyes tearing. Sheโ€™d never felt so happy, either. โ€œWhereโ€™s your little boy?โ€

โ€œI left him with your daughter and Fidelia.โ€ Shanna pointed at their table. โ€œHe was hungry, and Fidelia was sweet enough to fix him a plate of

food. Sheโ€™s a hoot.โ€

Heather smiled. โ€œYes, she is.โ€

โ€œOh dear.โ€ Shanna shook her head. โ€œThere he goes again.โ€

Heatherโ€™s mouth dropped open. Constantine was floating up to the ceiling. Bethany squealed with delight.

โ€œHeโ€™s just showing off,โ€ Shanna muttered. โ€œHe loves the attention.โ€ Heather pressed a hand to her chest. โ€œBut heโ€”heโ€™s a mortal.โ€

โ€œWith a Vamp daddy.โ€ Shanna smiled at her husband. Heather turned to Jean-Luc. โ€œDid you know about this?โ€

He was watching Constantine with a stunned expression. โ€œNo. Iโ€™d heard that our DNA was a bit different, but I didnโ€™t realizeโ€ฆโ€

โ€œOh dear.โ€ Shanna gave them a worried look. โ€œI hope this wonโ€™t stop you from having your own children. Constantine is a very loving and sweet child.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m sure he is.โ€ Heather watched him descend to his chair. He was giggling along with Bethany. โ€œDoes he do anything else?โ€

โ€œHis main talent appears related to healing,โ€ Roman explained. โ€œEveryone who comes in contact with him feels better afterward.โ€

โ€œOh.โ€ Well, that wasnโ€™t bad at all. Heather watched the little boy stuff some crackers in his mouth.

โ€œConstantine is so special that we decided to have another one.โ€ Shanna grinned. โ€œWeโ€™re expecting!โ€

โ€œOh my!โ€ Heather hugged her. โ€œThatโ€™s wonderful!โ€

โ€œCongratulations, mon ami.โ€ Jean-Luc slapped Roman on the shoulder.

Roman smiled. He looked handsome in the Echarpe tuxedo Jean-Luc had given him as a present for being best man.

โ€œIโ€™m very proud of you, Jean-Luc. Youโ€™ve come a long way.โ€ Roman slanted a wry look at Heather. โ€œDid he tell you that I taught him how to read and write?โ€

โ€œNo.โ€ Heather curled her hands around Jean-Lucโ€™s arm and leaned against his shoulder.

โ€œAnd I taught Roman how to fight,โ€ Jean-Luc said. โ€œHe was a slow student.โ€

Roman snorted. โ€œI was reluctant to kill. My mission has always been to save lives.โ€

โ€œIsnโ€™t he wonderful?โ€ Shanna hugged him. โ€œI have more news. Iโ€™ve decided to change over eventually, probably about ten years from now. I want the children to be old enough to handle it.โ€

โ€œExcuse me?โ€ Heather wasnโ€™t sure what she meant.

โ€œShanna has agreed to become a vampire,โ€ Roman said quietly. Heatherโ€™s heart lurched. She released Jean-Lucโ€™s arm. โ€œOh. Con-

congratulations.โ€ Good Lord, the woman wanted to be a vampire!

Roman and Shanna moved on to see how their son was doing. The rest of the reception line flowed by in a daze.

โ€œAre you all right?โ€ Jean-Luc whispered. โ€œDo you need to sit down?

You look pale.โ€

โ€œIโ€”I think Iโ€™ll sit down.โ€

Jean-Luc led her to the table reserved for them, then he dashed away at vampire speed and returned with a plate of food and a cup of punch.

โ€œI wasnโ€™t sure what you liked.โ€ He set the food in front of her.

โ€œThis is great, thank you.โ€ She popped a grape in her mouth.

He sat beside her. โ€œYou were shocked by Shannaโ€™s announcement.โ€ โ€œYes. It never occurred to me that we have anotherโ€ฆoption. I can

understand her wanting to be with her husband forever, but sheโ€™ll have to give up her days with her children.โ€

โ€œI know.โ€ Jean-Luc took her hand in his. โ€œI would never ask you to do

it.โ€

โ€œBut you hope that I would.โ€

He lifted her hand to his mouth and kissed her knuckles. โ€œLetโ€™s take it

one day at a time. Or rather, one night at a time.โ€

She smiled. โ€œI would like to have children with you. Even if they do end up floating around the nursery.โ€

He squeezed her hand. โ€œGood. I want more little girls who look like their maman.โ€

She ruffled the black curls on his head. โ€œI want a little boy who looks like his father.โ€

He leaned over to kiss her. A flash of light caught their attention. โ€œGotcha!โ€ Gregori was holding a digital camera and grinning.

The music started with a waltz.

โ€œThe first dance.โ€ Jean-Luc stood and held out a hand. โ€œIโ€™d like to dance with my wife.โ€

Heather stood and let him escort her to the dance floor. Everyone clapped. Heather just hoped she wouldnโ€™t trip and fall on her face in front of everyone.

The music slowed.

โ€œNo waltz?โ€ Heather asked.

โ€œWe can do one later.โ€ Jean-Luc slipped his arms around her waist. โ€œFor now, I just want to hold you close.โ€

โ€œSounds good.โ€ She wrapped her arms around his neck. They swayed gently in time with the music.

Jean-Luc kissed her brow, then rested his cheek against her temple. โ€œI love you. I will always love you.โ€

With a sigh, she closed her eyes. โ€œI love you, too.โ€

His grip tightened. โ€œFrom now on, we battle our fears together.โ€ โ€œYes.โ€

โ€œAre you afraid of heights, chรฉrie?โ€ โ€œA little. Why?โ€

โ€œOpen your eyes,โ€ he whispered. She did. โ€œGood Lord.โ€

โ€œLook! Mamaโ€™s flying!โ€ Bethany stood, pointing up in the air.

Heather tightened her hold around his neck. They were floating up to the ceiling, gently rotating. The long train of her skirt swirled in the air.

โ€œJean-Luc,โ€ she breathed. โ€œYou naughty man.โ€

He chuckled. โ€œStay with me, chรฉrie. I will take you places youโ€™ve never dreamed of.โ€
