Chapter no 25

The Undead Next Door

โ€œThank you for coming.โ€ Jean-Luc shook hands with Gregori, who had just teleported into his office.

โ€œNo problem, bro.โ€ Gregori peered through the window at the showroom below. โ€œSo you want me to emcee your show?โ€

โ€œIf you donโ€™t mind.โ€ Jean-Luc thought Gregori was the best choice

since heโ€™d once hosted a reality show on the Digital Vampire Network. โ€œI need to be at Heatherโ€™s side.โ€

Gregori nodded. โ€œSheโ€™s the chick Lui wants to kill?โ€

โ€œYes.โ€ Jean-Luc glanced at the silk curtain. She was behind there with her models. Phineas was standing guard, but Jean-Luc was anxious to take over that duty.

โ€œThis will be fun.โ€ Gregori adjusted the tie to his tuxedo. โ€œLots of hot babes. Is Simone here?โ€

โ€œSheโ€™s with Inga. They put on each otherโ€™s makeup. I have a digital

camera and monitor set up in the cellar so they can see themselves.โ€ Jean- Luc retrieved a piece of paper from his desk. โ€œThis is everything you need to know.โ€

Gregori glanced over the script. โ€œOkay. Letโ€™s do it.โ€

Robby strode into the office. He nodded at the vice president from Romatech Industries. โ€œGregori.โ€

โ€œHey, bro.โ€ Gregori shook his hand.

โ€œEverythingโ€™s ready to go,โ€ Robby announced. โ€œOne of Heatherโ€™s models was a bit nervous and had too much to drink. Heather has her drinking some coffee.โ€

Jean-Luc frowned. โ€œIf sheโ€™s drunk, her mental facilities will be weak.โ€ โ€œYeโ€™re thinking she would be easy for Lui to control,โ€ Robby said. โ€œOui.โ€ Jean-Luc picked up his cane with the hidden sword inside. โ€œIโ€™ll keep an eye on her. Simone, too,โ€ Robby added.

โ€œUnfortunately, everyone in the building is a suspect.โ€ Jean-Luc strode to the office door, carrying his cane. โ€œLetโ€™s go.โ€

The three male Vamps zoomed down the backstairs and into the kitchen.

Phil and Fidelia were having a late-night snack with Bethany.

โ€œYou can go to my office now.โ€ Jean-Luc hunched down beside Bethany. โ€œYou can watch yourย mamanย through the window.โ€ The little girl nodded, her mouth full of cookies.

He passed by Phil and whispered, โ€œKeep them safe.โ€

โ€œYes, sir.โ€ Phil nodded. Heโ€™d been instructed earlier to shield Bethanyโ€™s view if things turned ugly.

Jean-Luc strode to the showroom with Robby and Gregori.

Robby pointed at the catwalk. โ€œIโ€™ll be up there during the show. Phineas and Ian will be down here. The sheriffโ€™s already here with two deputies.โ€

Jean-Luc noted Billy leaning against a wall with a toothpick in his mouth. His deputies were standing on the opposite side of the room.

โ€œIโ€™ll check the guests as they come in,โ€ Robby continued, โ€œand make sure theyโ€™re all mortal.โ€

Simone and Inga strode into the room, ignoring the deputies who turned to gape at them.

โ€œHey, Simone.โ€ Gregori walked toward her, smiling.

She stopped. โ€œGregori.โ€ She lifted her hand and allowed him to escort her and Inga to the backstage area.

Gregori lifted the curtains to let them pass. โ€œIโ€™ll be back here,โ€ he told Jean-Luc.

โ€œTell Heather I want to see her.โ€ Jean-Luc waited.

Heather peeked out. Her eyes widened. โ€œYouโ€™re looking good.โ€ โ€œThank you.โ€ Heโ€™d worn his best tux. โ€œWeโ€™re ready to start.โ€ โ€œOkay.โ€ She glanced back. โ€œGood luck, ladies.โ€

Jean-Luc smiled when he saw she was wearing the black cocktail dress heโ€™d purchased for her. โ€œYou look lovely.โ€

โ€œThank you.โ€ She smoothed down the skirt. โ€œI know a guy with great taste.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s right.โ€ Jean-Luc escorted her to the front row of chairs. โ€œI heard one of your models is a little drunk.โ€

She winced. โ€œLiz. I would have never believed that a drama coach would suffer so much from stage fright. But theyโ€™re all dressed and ready to go.โ€ She was talking fast and her gaze was flitting about. She was nervous, Jean-Luc realized, and with good reason.

โ€œCome.โ€ He sat in a chair at the end of the row and motioned for her to sit beside him. He took her hands in his. They were icy cold, and he rubbed them. โ€œI will protect you, Heather. I promise.โ€

She took a deep breath. โ€œIโ€™ve been waiting for this for two weeks, and now I just want it over with.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™ll do fine. Your outfits are beautiful.โ€

โ€œWell, that seems really unimportant compared to someone trying to kill me.โ€

โ€œNo one will hurt you. I wonโ€™t let them.โ€ He glanced at the front door.

Robby was checking everyone and examining purses as they came in. โ€œOh no,โ€ Heather moaned. โ€œCoach Gunter has arrived.โ€

The short coach didnโ€™t wait in line, but burst into the showroom. โ€œHey Heather!โ€ His booming voice rang out. โ€œI brought some moral support for Liz.โ€ He blew his whistle, and two cheerleaders from Guadalupe High skipped into the showroom, waving pom-poms and squealing.

โ€œOh no.โ€ Heather scooted down in her chair.

Jean-Luc chuckled. โ€œIโ€™ve never seen this before at a fashion show.โ€ โ€œOnly in Texas,โ€ Heather muttered.

Coach and the cheerleaders sat in the front row across from Jean-Luc and Heather.

More people arrived, and soon all the seats were filled. Robby shut the door, then walked down the hall. A few seconds later, he strolled onto the catwalk. Obviously heโ€™d used vampire speed once he was out of sight.

Gregori stepped onto the platform next to the runway. โ€œGood evening, and welcome to Schnitzelbergโ€™s first fashion show.โ€

The small crowd cheered. Pom-poms waved.

Gregori grinned. โ€œThis is a charity event. For each person in attendance, Jean-Luc Echarpe is donating one thousand dollars to the Schnitzelberg Independent School District.โ€

More cheers.

Jean-Luc scanned the room. Every visitor was mortal. None of them had approached him to talk or thank him, so it looked like his identity was still a secret.

โ€œWeโ€™ll start with two designs by Alberto Alberghini,โ€ Gregori continued. โ€œMay I introduce our world-famous modelsโ€”Simone and Inga!โ€

The crowd clapped politely. Jean-Luc suspected theyโ€™d never heard of his famous models.

Music started. Alberto was controlling that from backstage. At the front door, Ian dimmed the sconces on the walls, so the runway would look brighter.

Simone stepped onto the runway. There was an appreciative gasp among the crowd.

โ€œSimone is wearing a black silk evening gown that shimmers with

thousands of bugle beads,โ€ Gregori read from his notes. โ€œThe draped back gives it just the right dramatic touch. A stunning design.โ€

Simone marched down the runway and struck a pose. Jean-Luc watched her carefully. She glared at him, but then she always modeled with an angry expression. She was halfway back when Inga began her walk.

โ€œInga is wearing an ivory cocktail dress of shantung silk,โ€ Gregori announced. โ€œNote the slanted neckline which leaves one shoulder bare and how this is echoed in the asymmetrical hem. An elegant creation by Alberto Alberghini.โ€

The crowd clapped politely.

โ€œDid Alberto write this script?โ€ Heather whispered.

Jean-Luc nodded. โ€œI edited it.โ€ He knew Simone and Inga would be busily changing into their next outfits. Alberto had set up a screen so the mortal models wouldnโ€™t see them using vampire speed to change clothes.

โ€œAnd now,โ€ Gregori continued, โ€œwe have three designs by Schnitzelbergโ€™s very own designer, a promising new talent in the fashion world, Heather Lynn Westfield.โ€

The crowd cheered. Coach Gunter circled a fist in the air and hooted.

The cheerleaders shook their pom-poms.

Heather ducked her head. โ€œI canโ€™t believe this.โ€

โ€œThe town loves you,โ€ Jean-Luc whispered. โ€œI can see why.โ€

She looked at him, her eyes sparkling with emotion. โ€œThank you for believing in me.โ€

He took her hand. โ€œIt doesnโ€™t have to end tonight.โ€

โ€œAll right!โ€ Gregori grinned. โ€œOur first model is Miss Gray, an English teacher from Guadalupe High.โ€

Miss Gray stepped hesitantly onto the runway, wearing Heatherโ€™s first gown.

The cheerleaders leaped to their feet, their pom-poms in the air. โ€œGo, Miss Gray!โ€ Shake, shake, shake. โ€œGo, Miss Gray!โ€

Alberto started the music up again. Miss Gray smiled and apparently realized she was among friends. She walked down the runway, her smile growing.

โ€œMiss Gray is wearing an evening gown of royal-blue silk chiffon,โ€ Gregori read from his notes. โ€œNotice the expert flow of the skirt and the versatility provided by the matching stole.โ€

The second teacher started down the runway.

โ€œGo, Ms. Lawson!โ€ Shake, shake, shake. โ€œGo, Ms. Lawson!โ€

โ€œMs. Lawson is wearing a black cocktail dress, topped with a bolero- style vest,โ€ Gregori announced. โ€œThe red soutache trim on the bolero is repeated on the hem of the skirt. A creation both elegant and bold.โ€

Heather clung to Jean-Lucโ€™s hand.

โ€œYouโ€™re doing great,โ€ he whispered.

โ€œIf someone wants to attack me, I wish theyโ€™d just do it,โ€ she whispered back. โ€œThe suspense is killing me.โ€

The third teacher stepped onto the runway. Coach jumped up and hooted. โ€œWay to go, Liz!โ€ โ€œGo, Miss Schumann!โ€ Shake, shake, shake.

Liz started down the runway, wobbling a bit in her maroon stiletto heels.

โ€œMiss Schumann is wearing a maroon jacket dress,โ€ Gregori said. โ€œThe fitted dress is topped with an elegant jacket, featuring a pleated portrait collar, three-quarter-length sleeves, and a faux gem button.โ€

She posed at the end of the runway while Coach whipped out a camera.

Jean-Luc ducked, not wanting his picture taken.ย Zut, Robby must have been too busy checking purses. Heโ€™d missed this camera.

A light flashed, apparently blinding Miss Schumann, for the woman stumbled back, then squealed as she teetered on the edge of the runway and fell off.

โ€œI got you, Liz!โ€ Coach rushed toward her and helped her up. โ€œSheโ€™s okay!โ€ He raised his arms like sheโ€™d scored a touchdown.

The crowd cheered. Heather started toward her friend, but Jean-Luc stopped her.

โ€œYou need to stay with me.โ€ He exchanged a look with Robby. It looked like the three mortal models were safe. But Lui could have still taken over someoneโ€™s mind in the audience. And Simone still had one walk left.

The crowd gave Liz another round of applause as Coach Gunter escorted her back to the curtained-off area.

Gregori cleared his throat. โ€œAnd now, we have three more designs by Alberto Alberghini. First up, Schnitzelbergโ€™s own world-famous model, Sasha Saladine.โ€

Sasha started down the runway, and the crowd cheered.

โ€œSasha is wearing a three-piece outfit, all in beige silk,โ€ Gregori continued. โ€œThe tightly fitted pants and top make a stunning contrast to the loose and flowing full-length coat.โ€

Jean-Luc noticed Sasha had her hands in the coat pockets. That was normal for a model, butโ€ฆ

Sasha pulled out a gun, aimed at Heather, and pulled the trigger.

Jean-Luc leaped in front and felt a sharp sting in his right arm. As thin as Sasha was, the recoil from the pistol sent her flying off the runway.

Phineas jumped on her. The deputies and sheriff were running toward her.

โ€œAre you all right?โ€ Jean-Luc looked at Heather. She was shaking, her eyes wide. He pulled her close.

He glanced at the catwalk. Robby was gone. Ian was gone, too. No doubt theyโ€™d teleported outside to look for Lui, in case the bastard was lurking about.

The crowd pushed toward the door, screaming.

The sheriff jumped onto the runway. โ€œCalm down! The danger is over.โ€

Coach blew his whistle, and the crowd quieted. โ€œAll right, letโ€™s go.โ€ He steered the crowd out the door. โ€œForm a double line. Move it! Move it!โ€

Billy jumped down to where Phineas had Sasha pinned on the floor. He helped her up, and she looked around, dazed.

โ€œWhat happened?โ€ She looked at the sheriff. โ€œOh hi, Billy. I remember you from high school.โ€

With a frown, he pulled her hands behind her back and cuffed her.

โ€œSasha Saladine, youโ€™re under arrest for attempted murder. You have the right to remain silent.โ€

โ€œWhat?โ€ Sasha turned pale. โ€œI wouldnโ€™t hurt anyone.โ€

Billy used a handkerchief to pick up her gun. โ€œYou just tried to shoot Heather with this.โ€

Sasha gasped. โ€œI donโ€™t know how to shoot. I would never hurt Heather.โ€ โ€œYeah, right.โ€ Billy led her toward the front door. โ€œYou probably blew

up her truck, too.โ€

Sasha gasped. โ€œNo! I donโ€™t know what youโ€™re talking about. Billy, please.โ€ She gave him a beseeching look. โ€œDonโ€™t you remember me?โ€

He looked sadly at her. โ€œYeah, I do.โ€

Heather pulled away from Jean-Luc. โ€œBilly, sheโ€™s telling the truth. Sheโ€™s not responsible.โ€

He gave her an incredulous look. โ€œShe shot at you. Everyone saw it.โ€ He led Sasha out the front door. โ€œYou have the right to an attorneyโ€ฆโ€

Heather turned to Jean-Luc. โ€œWe canโ€™t let her pay for Louieโ€™s crime.โ€ โ€œIโ€™ll take care of it,โ€ Jean-Luc assured her. โ€œFor now, itโ€™s more

important that we find Lui.โ€ He removed the sword from his cane, wincing when his arm objected.

Heather gasped. โ€œOh my God!โ€

โ€œWhat are you doing?โ€ Gregori strode toward him.

โ€œI want you and Phineas to guard Heather while I hunt for Lui.โ€

Gregori shook his head, frowning. โ€œDude, youโ€™re not in any shape to fight. Let Robby and Ian do it.โ€

โ€œBut itโ€™s my responsibility.โ€ Jean-Luc tightened his grip on his sword. For some reason, his hand was tingling and unresponsive. โ€œI have to kill that bastard once and for all.โ€

Heather touched his left arm. โ€œJean-Luc. Darling, youโ€™re bleeding.

Youโ€™ve been shot.โ€

Two hours later, Jean-Luc settled into his enormous bathtub. The hot water swirled around him, creating white foam, while the jets pounded his back with rhythmic pulses. He sat in the corner, his injured right arm propped on the edge to keep the bandage dry. His left arm rested on the opposite side, near the bottle of Blissky.

Jean-Luc had been taken aback by the gunshot wound. His determination to protect Heather and deal with Lui had pushed the pain to the back of his mind. Gregori and Heather had helped him to his bedroom while Alberto managed the aftermath of the disastrous show.

Gregori had called a Vamp doctor from Houston, Dr. Lee, who had helped deliver Shannaโ€™s baby. Dr. Lee arrived in Jean-Lucโ€™s bedroom with his medical kit, teleported in by Gregori. Once Heather was reassured that Jean-Luc would survive, she had hurried upstairs to check on her daughter.

The bullet had to be extracted. Gregori handed Jean-Luc a bottle of Blissky to ease the pain. Dr. Lee removed the bullet, bandaged him up, left a bill, and then teleported back to Houston.

Gregori went off to see Simone and Inga. Ian and Robby were still searching for Lui, while Phineas and Phil were on guard duty for Heather and her family.

Jean-Luc knew Lui had to be nearby. He had been manipulating Sasha, who had been in the area for the past two days. The bastard would want to be close by to savor the chaos heโ€™d caused.

Jean-Luc took another sip of Blissky. Here he was, once again feeling helpless.

He couldnโ€™t fight tonight. He was useless. The pain had dulled to a constant throb, but anger and frustration were mounting.

Lui had to be found. This had to end. Jean-Luc couldnโ€™t keep Heather here as a prisoner. But if he let her go, Lui would kill her. Mon Dieu, she had every reason to despise him. She had lost her newfound freedom because of him. He was insane to even hope for her love.

He heard the bedroom door open and shut. โ€œRobby, is that you? Please tell me Lui is dead.โ€

Soft footsteps approached. Jean-Luc turned to look, his vision blurred by pain. He blinked, certain he must be dreaming. She was wearing the blue nightgown he had bought for her. Yes, he had to be dreaming. It was a wonderful dream.

Heather slowly walked toward him. โ€œJean-Luc.โ€ He blinked. โ€œYouโ€™re real.โ€

She smiled slowly. โ€œOh yes.โ€
