Chapter no 24

The Undead Next Door

That night, Heather learned about another super power the vampires possessed. She stood in the showroom, amazed, while Robby and Ian hung material from the catwalk to make a curtain that partitioned off the back of the showroom. The models would use the back section as their dressing room during the runway show.

What amazed Heather was the two Scotsmen didnโ€™t need a ladder. They simply levitated in the air.

โ€œI guess you can do that, too.โ€ She slanted a glance at Jean-Luc, who stood beside her.

โ€œYes.โ€ He leaned toward her. โ€œIn my arms, we could rise to new heights together.โ€

She wasnโ€™t sure he was referring to levitation. โ€œIโ€™m fine being a lowly mortal.โ€

โ€œThereโ€™s nothing lowly about you. And Iโ€™ve had some trouble lately with certain parts levitating on their own.โ€

She snorted. โ€œWhat other powers do you have?โ€

โ€œSuperior vision and hearing. An advanced awareness of my surroundings. For instance, did you know Fidelia is hiding behind the scarf display case?โ€

โ€œNo. Why on earth would she do that?โ€

Jean-Lucโ€™s mouth twitched. โ€œYou canโ€™t guess?โ€

Heather lifted her gaze. Above the display case, Robby was hovering in the air, wearing his blue and green plaid kilt. โ€œGood Lord. This is

embarrassing.โ€ Thankfully, Bethany was in the kitchen, eating cookies, while Phineas stood guard.

Ian dashed into the showroom, carrying more bolts of fabric to use as curtains. He moved so fast, his body was a blur.

โ€œYouโ€™re super fast and strong,โ€ Heather observed.

โ€œWe have great endurance.โ€ Jean-Luc smiled. โ€œWe can last all night long.โ€

She scoffed. He had a one-track mind tonight. In that respect, Vamp men had not advanced one iota from their mortal beginnings. โ€œYour eyes put you at a disadvantage.โ€

โ€œHowโ€™s that? Donโ€™t you like knowing when you turn me on?โ€

โ€œYes, but if I ever see you look at another woman, and your eyes turn red, youโ€™ll be in big trouble.โ€

He winced. โ€œI never thought about it that way. Fortunately, I plan to be faithful.โ€

How could he remain faithful when she was old and gray? Heather sighed. โ€œWhat other powers do you have?โ€

โ€œTelepathy. We donโ€™t do it that often, because itโ€™s not private. Any Vamp could pick up a message being broadcast. Thatโ€™s the problem with vampire sex.โ€

โ€œWhat?โ€

โ€œVampire sex. Any Vamp can join in and play along.โ€ Heather grimaced. โ€œThatโ€™s disgusting.โ€

He arched an eyebrow. โ€œYou might like it.โ€ โ€œI am not into group sex.โ€

โ€œGood, because I refuse to share you.โ€

Time to change the subject. โ€œWhat other powers do you have?โ€ โ€œMind control. We can manipulate and erase thoughts.โ€

She nodded. โ€œYou think Louie might use mind control on someone involved with the show. Even Simone.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s possible, but donโ€™t worry. I wonโ€™t leave your side.โ€

She wondered whom Louie would choose. Would his victim act strangely, making it obvious? โ€œOh my gosh, what if heโ€™s messing with Cody?โ€

Jean-Luc blinked. โ€œExcuse me?โ€

โ€œCodyโ€™s been acting weird ever since Louie arrived on the scene.

Maybe Louieโ€™s using him to get to me.โ€

Jean-Luc shook his head. โ€œNo, heโ€™s not.โ€

โ€œHow can you be so sure? Cody went berserk again last night.โ€ โ€œHe must have cursed you.โ€

โ€œBilly said he was ranting about me, butโ€”how would you know?โ€ Jean-Luc sighed. โ€œHe is being manipulated. By me.โ€

Heather gasped. โ€œWhy would you do that?โ€ โ€œHe was cursing you. He deserved it.โ€

โ€œHeโ€™s been running around like a cockroach.โ€ โ€œExactly.โ€ Jean-Luc nodded. โ€œIt suits him perfectly.โ€ โ€œThatโ€™s not your decision to make.โ€

โ€œI was protecting you.โ€

โ€œNo.โ€ Anger sizzled inside her. โ€œYou were scaring the hell out of me. Iโ€™ve been worried for days. I had to call my lawyer to see about changing visitation rights.โ€

โ€œIโ€™ll pay your bill.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s not the point! You had no right to interfere in my personal life.โ€ โ€œI thought Iย wasย part of your personal life.โ€ He crossed his arms,

frowning. โ€œThe next time I see your ex, Iโ€™ll erase the command. Heโ€™ll go back to being his usual repugnant self.โ€

โ€œThank you. I canโ€™t believe Iโ€™ve been worrying over this, and it was just a joke to you.โ€

โ€œI was not laughing, Heather. I wanted to kill the bastard for the way he was treating you. A hundred years ago, I would have.โ€

Her chest constricted, making it hard to breathe. She feltโ€ฆclosed in.

Suffocated. She wasnโ€™t ready for this.

โ€œAre you all right?โ€ He touched her shoulder. โ€œYouโ€™re heart is pounding.โ€

She stepped back. โ€œI have fought too hard for my freedom just to throw it away now.โ€ She turned and stalked to the kitchen to be with her daughter.

He was losing her, and he didnโ€™t know what to do about it. Vampires werenโ€™t accustomed to rejection. In the old days, if Jean-Luc wanted a pint, he could always resort to mind control. That way, the lady in question never said no.

But it wasnโ€™t blood he wanted from Heather. He wanted her love, and that was proving much harder to obtain. His sense of honor precluded using mind control on something this important. He wanted her love to be true.

His old methods of seduction hadnโ€™t quite worked on Heather. She had her own career, her own home, her own family. She valued her independence, and she didnโ€™t really need him.

Merde.ย The more she pulled away, the more he ached for her. In the

days that followed, he was tempted several times to whisk her down to his bedroom and make love to her till she couldnโ€™t see straight. He also considered using vampire sex to seduce her while she slept, but he rejected that idea, too. Sheโ€™d not reacted well to his manipulating her exโ€™s mind. She would not appreciate his playing games with her head.

So he was left with a totally lame course of actionโ€”being a nice guy. Heโ€™d always considered himself somewhat nice, so it was surprising how much he had to work at it. He had to constantly remind himself not to tease her with his usual lewd sense of humor. He had to force himself, over and over, not to touch her.

She immersed herself in work, and every evening, he reviewed her daily accomplishments in a businesslike manner. He made polite suggestions

while he mentally pictured her clothes falling off. He gave her sincere encouragement while he imagined her screaming his name in the throes of a massive climax.

As the week wore on, he even pictured her beautiful body growing ripe with his child inside her. Dammit to hell, he wanted to start a life with her. He wanted to be her husband. This being-nice crap was for the birds.

By Friday, Heather was ready to scream, and she didnโ€™t know why. Jean- Luc was being very polite. He didnโ€™t even try to touch her. Unfortunately, he also stopped teasing her and making jokes. He no longer looked at her like he was ready to devour her. Had his love for her already gone cold? If that was the case, then she was right to withdraw.

She had felt angry about his turning her ex into a cockroach, but when sheโ€™d gone to Fidelia to complain about it, theyโ€™d both ended up rolling with laughter.

Heather sighed. She missed the old Jean-Luc. In the last few days, all the fun had gone out of him. Even Fidelia noticed the difference.

โ€œPoor Juan-Luc,โ€ she moaned. โ€œHe has lost his mojo. You must help him get it back.โ€

โ€œHow?โ€ Heather was hesitant to ask.

โ€œGo down to his bedroom and take off your clothes while you do the tango.โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t know how to tango. Will the Cotton Eye Joe work?โ€ Heather pictured herself stripping while doing a country-western line dance.

โ€œIโ€™m trying to help you,ย chica.ย If you donโ€™t tell him you love him, you could lose him. Do you want to lose him?โ€

No.ย The answer sprang to her mind. No, she couldnโ€™t bear to lose him. โ€œI miss him. I miss the fun conversations we used to have. I miss the way

he was always trying to steal a kiss or touch me. I miss the way he made me feel.โ€ Sheโ€™d felt loved by him. Oh God, she missed his love.

She kept herself occupied by working long hours. By Friday morning, she finished the last of the three outfits. That afternoon, her three teacher friends came by for their fittings. Everything was set for the show on

Saturday. Her two weeks of employment would be over. Jean-Luc had said she could stay until her house was ready. Was he reluctant to see her go?

She didnโ€™t know how she could leave him and go back to her old life like nothing had happened.

Ian collapsed as usual about sixย P.M. They always made sure Bethany

was in the kitchen when it happened. Heather had told her Ian was a special person who was aging very fast. Bethany seemed to accept that, although

she announced she wanted to age fast, too.

A little after sevenย P.M., Sasha showed up. After fussing at her, Alberto fitted her for the outfit she was supposed to wear.

โ€œHeather, your designs are fabulous!โ€ Sasha hugged her. โ€œIโ€™m so happy for you.โ€

โ€œThank you.โ€ Heather was surprised. โ€œYou do know that my designs are for a size twelve?โ€

โ€œOh, I know. And I may be wearing them someday.โ€ Sasha whirled in a circle, grinning. โ€œGuess what? Iโ€™m going to retire! And start eating again!โ€

โ€œWow. Congratulations. When did you decide this?โ€

โ€œWhen I fell in love.โ€ Sasha clasped her hands together over her heart. โ€œI met him in San Antonio. Heโ€™s so handsome. And rich. And heโ€™s crazy about me!โ€

โ€œGreat! When do we get to meet this guy?โ€

โ€œSoon. Henry is so fabulous. Youโ€™ll just love him. I do. Can you believe it?โ€ Sasha practically danced to the front door. โ€œIโ€™ll see you tomorrow!โ€

Later that evening, after the Vamps awoke, Simone and Inga put on their gowns and tried out the runway. They pronounced it ugly, but adequate.

Meanwhile, Jean-Luc paced around the showroom, making sure everything was in order. The mannequins and display cases had been moved to storage. The black runway was flanked on each side by two rows of white folding chairs. The lengths of silk hanging from the catwalk

glimmered in shades of black, gray, and white. The whole room looked very elegant.

Jean-Luc stopped beside Heather. โ€œYour outfits are ready?โ€ โ€œYes. And my models were fitted this afternoon.โ€

โ€œGood.โ€ He paced toward the silk curtains and back. โ€œYou did well to have three outfits ready in such a short time.โ€

โ€œThank you.โ€

He paced toward the front door, then turned and came back. He glowered at her. โ€œIโ€™m about to explode.โ€

She blinked. โ€œExcuse me?โ€ โ€œI canโ€™t take it anymore.โ€

Was he rejecting her? Heatherโ€™s heart began to pound. โ€œI realize you only hired me for two weeks, and my time is up.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m not talking about employment. Iโ€™m talking about us.โ€ He paced away, but returned after a few steps. โ€œIโ€™ve gone almost a week without touching you. I donโ€™t know how toโ€ฆact. I want to grab you and kiss you, but I donโ€™t dare frighten you away. And Iโ€™m tired of waiting for Lui to make his move. Youโ€™re trapped here until I can get rid of him.โ€

โ€œI think weโ€™re all suffering from cabin fever. Iโ€™m nervous about tomorrow, too, but Iโ€™ll be glad when itโ€™s over.โ€

โ€œWhen itโ€™s over, youโ€™ll be free to go.โ€ He dragged a hand through the dark curls on his head. โ€œWill you accept full-time employment?โ€

She blinked. โ€œYouโ€™re offering me a job?โ€

โ€œYes. I want to manufacture some of your designs. You can work out of New York or Paris. Iโ€™ll help you relocate.โ€

Heatherโ€™s heart lurched. Designing clothes in New York or Paris? It was all sheโ€™d ever dreamed of. โ€œBut where would you be?โ€

He sat heavily in a foldout chair. โ€œIโ€™ll be here in hiding.โ€

She sat beside him. Her dream job didnโ€™t sound so wonderful if it didnโ€™t include him. โ€œCould I work here?โ€

โ€œI suppose the daytime guard could let you in.โ€ He gave her a wary look. โ€œYou can always go home before I wake.โ€

She bit her lip. โ€œIs that you want?โ€

โ€œNo! I know exactly what Iโ€”โ€ He leaned back in the chair. โ€œBut I shouldnโ€™t tell you. Itโ€™ll scare you away.โ€

โ€œTell me. If Louie was gone, what would you do?โ€

โ€œI would take you and your family to New York. We would stay at Romanโ€™s townhouse. You would see the tourist places during the day, and then at nightโ€ฆโ€

โ€œYes?โ€

โ€œWeโ€™d go to the Diamond District to pick out a ring.โ€ Her mouth dropped open.

โ€œAnd then I would ask you to marry me.โ€ Her mouth snapped shut, and she gulped.

โ€œI would be a good father to Bethany, and I would love to have more children with you. Two, I think.โ€

Did he have their colleges picked out? He certainly did know exactly what he wanted. She struggled to breathe.

He tilted his head, watching her. โ€œWhat do you think?โ€

โ€œI think you found your mojo,โ€ she whispered. โ€œIs that an answer?โ€ He looked confused.

โ€œNo.โ€ Heather clenched her hands together.

โ€œIโ€™d better leave you alone. Iโ€™ve said too much already.ย Merde. Iโ€™ve probably scared you away.โ€ He strode from the room.

Heatherโ€™s heart pounded in her ears. Good Lord, he wanted to marry her. Marriage to a vampire. And children.

Was he scaring her away? Didnโ€™t she have enough to be scared about? Tomorrow was Saturday, the day of the runway show. And the night they expected Louie to try to kill her.
