โโHey,โ I croak out as Brynn springs back to her own cushion. My mouth is desert-dry all of a sudden, my head is pounding, and my muscles ache. Itโs like all the abuse Iโve been putting my body through for the past week has finally caught up with me. โWhat are you doing?โโ
โWhat isย sheย doing, is the question,โ Shane says, lifting his chin toward Brynn.
โI came to apologize,โ Brynn says, tucking a leg beneath her. I didnโt even have a chance to notice that she was practically in my lap until she was already gone. โAbout the show. And to let Tripp know that I quit. Iโm not working forย Motiveย anymore.โ
โGood for you. If thatโs even true,โ Shane says, crossing his arms. His face is like a mask, his expression cold and forbidding. How much did he hear? โStill doesnโt explain why youโre here when my girlfriend told you to leave.โ
โItโs my fault,โ I say. My mind might be sluggish, but I feel pretty confident in that statement. Most things are my fault.
โI was just going,โ Brynn says, getting to her feet. She turns to me. โI think you should come with me, Tripp. Your dad will be worried.โ
โHis dadโs at work,โ Shane replies before I can. โTripp is fine where he is. Charlotte and I are looking out for him, so how about you mind your own fucking business?โ
โHey,โ I start, but Brynn is already speaking.
โIs itย looking out for himย to leave him by himself with a fully stocked bar?โ she asks, sweeping her arm toward a side table covered with liquor bottles.
โHe wanted to be alone,โ Shane says, jaw twitching.
I blink, and for a second I see the Shane of four years ago, smaller but still one of the biggest kids in our class, his eyes empty and his hands covered in blood.ย All I did was pick it up.ย All this time, I thought I was using Shane as a shield for my father. It never occurred to me that it might be the other way around, and I still canโt wrap my brain around that. Heโs being a dick right now, sure, but heโs still my friend.
Isnโt he?
โThatโs not the most important part of what I said,โ Brynn snaps.
โYou have a lot of opinions for someone who shouldnโt be here,โ Shane says, advancing toward her with a menacing look in his eye. Brynn takes an involuntary step back, and I finally manage to heave myself to my feet beside her.
โLeave her alone, Shane. Sheโs just trying to help.โ
โYouโre whipped, T,โ Shane says scornfully. โSheโs using you.โ
โIโm notโyou have no idea what youโre talking about.โ If only. That wouldโve been a much better way to drown my sorrows. โLook, thanks for coming to find me today. And giving me some space to crash. Butโฆโ I was about to sayย Brynnโs right,ย but thatโll just set him off again. โI need to get home. I have to talk to my dad.โ
Good thing Shane doesnโt have Brynnโs magical truth-serum abilities, because that was a lie. I mean, I have to talk to my father eventually, butโฆI donโt even know where to start. Our relationship underwent a massive shift
four years ago, then shifted back within the past five minutes, and he doesnโt know about any of it.
โAnd say what?โ Shane asks.
His voice is challenging. How much did he hear? I still canโt tell. โJust check in,โ I say. โHeโs been worried.โ
Shane lifts his eyebrows. โAnd you suddenly care becauseโฆ?โ
Because heโs not a murderer. Surprise! Maybe you are, though?
No. Thatโs nuts. Just because Dad didnโt kill Mr. Larkin doesnโt mean Shane did. Iโm overtired, and if I stay here any longer, Iโm going to start saying some of this stuff out loud.
โIโm heading out,โ I say. โTell Charlotte I said thanksโโ
And then, with a few quick steps, Shane is right in my face, fists curled at his sides. Weโre almost exactly the same size, except Iโm a little taller and heโs a little bulkier. I donโt know who would win in a fight, because weโve never fought.
โSeriously?โ I ask.
โYouโre forgetting who your friends are,โ Shane says in a low voice. โNo, Iโm not. I just have more than two friends.โ
โWe took you in when nobody gave a crap about you,โ Shane hisses.
โYouย took me in?โ Iโd laugh if he didnโt look so pissed. โIโm not an orphan.โ
His lip curls. โCouldโve fooled me.โ
โStop!โ a commanding voice calls from the doorway. Shane steps away before my brain can process his last comment and tell the rest of me,ย Yeah, letโs hit him for that.ย Charlotte strides forward, and I should thank her, because if Iโd taken a swing at Shane, heโd probably have kicked my ass. But she glares at me before I can say a word. โI see youโve picked your side,โ she says icily.
I rub my aching temple. โThereโs not a side, Charlotte.โ
She lets out a sound thatโs too polite to be called a snort. More like aย hmmph.ย โThereโs always a side. And she needs to get off my property,โ she adds without looking at Brynn.
โIโm going.โ Brynn heads to the door, clearly happy for the cue.
I donโt want to leave like this, but Iโm starting to think thereโs not going to be a better way, especially after this night of revelations. For a second, when Shane and I were staring one another down, I was seized with a sudden, paranoid certainty that he wouldnโtย letย me leave.
โThanks for everything,โ I mumble as I pass them.
Charlotte gives another elegant huff. โSee you next time you fall apart.โ
Brynn doesnโt say anything until weโre at the gate. โWow,โ she whispers when I unlatch it and we step through. โThat was a lot.โ I donโt reply, and she adds with a backward look over her shoulder, โDo you think Shane heard us?โ
โI donโt know,โ I say. โMy carโs in theโโ
Before she can finish, I trip over a root and go flying. Brynn tries to grab my arm and keep me from falling, but all she manages to do is go down with me. โOw.โ She winces, rolls to one side, and springs into a crouch. I just lie there, though, too disoriented to move.
โRemind me not to take you along the next time I want to make a quick getaway,โ she says, and holds out her hand before adding, โCome on. I know you need rest, but not here.โ
I grasp her palm and sit up, but tug her closer before she can pull me the rest of the way to my feet. โHey,โ I say. โThank you. Seriously. Iโm not
โI donโt know if Iโll ever be able to averagely thank you for what you did for me tonight.โ
She raises her brows. โAveragely?โ โYes.โ
โDo you meanย adequately?โ
โIโm trying to have a moment, Brynn,โ I grumble.
Her eyes twinkle. โMaybe you shouldnโt have it in Charlotteโs yard, though.โ
โOkay. Fine.โ I get to my feet, still holding on to her hand. โJust know that I am very grateful. Iโm bursting with so much gratitude, I could kiss you.โ
Brynn freezes, eyes wide. Oh. Right. I mightโveโno, Iย definitelyย told her I used to be in love with her, so itโs possible she thinks I mean that I literally want to kiss her. Itโs also possible I do mean that.
She recovers with a wry smile. โSober up first, okay?โ she says. โThen weโll talk.โ
